Meet the Head Coach

Head Coach Leo Bush

Leo Bush begins his third season as the head women’s volleyball coach at Rhode Island College. He owns a career record of 30-26 (.536) in two seasons at the helm.

RIC made a dramatic improvement in 2015 as Bush led the Anchorwomen to an 18-12 overall record and a 3-4 mark in the Little East Conference. Sixth-seeded RIC came back from a 2-0 deficit to defeat third-seeded Plymouth State, 3-2, in the first round of the Little East Tournament and then bowed out with a 3-0 loss to second-seeded Keene State in the semifinals.

He took over the program in 2014

and led RIC to a 12-14 record overall and a 3-4 (fifth place) mark in the Little East Conference. The 12 victories were a nine-win improvement from the 2013 season. By virtue of their fifth place finish, the Anchorwomen earned a trip to the Little East Conference Tournament for the first time since the 2012 campaign.

Bush joined Rhode Island College after serv-ing as the head girls’ volleyball coach at Coventry High School for nine seasons. During his ten-ure, Bush won a trio of R.I. Division I Girls’ Volleyball State Championships in 2011, 2012 and 2013, and also compiled four Division I South Division Championships.

He was named the Words Unlimited Schoolgirl Coach of the Year in 2012 and the Rhode Island Volleyball Coaches Association (RIVCA) Coach of the Year in 2005, 2009, 2010 and 2012.

Bush began his coaching career at Pilgrim High School as the head boys’ volleyball coach in 1998, before serving as the head coach of both the boys’ volleyball team and the baseball team for Oakers in 2001. He has held the title of head baseball coach for 14 seasons, while he spent three seasons as the head boys’ volleyball coach at Coventry. Bush capped off his coaching career with the boys as the 2003 Division I State Champions.

This is Bush’s second stint coaching at RIC, having served as an assis-tant baseball coach for the Anchormen in 1997.

In addition to his coaching duties, Bush works in the Coventry Public School System as a Spanish teacher, a position he has held since 1996.

Bush graduated from Stonehill College in 1996 with a bachelor’s degree in foreign language. He was a two-time baseball team captain who was also named First Team All-Region, All-Northeast-10 and to the league’s All-Academic Team. In addition, he was selected to play in the N.E. College Baseball All-Star Game as a senior and received the Gartland Award for his outstanding contributions to Stonehill athletics.

He is single and currently resides in Warwick.
