SOUTHWEST, OR | Just seven miles upstream from River Steward Dave Lacey’s home in southern Oregon a foreign-owned mining company was quietly working to develop a nickel strip mine on public lands. The proposed mine would straddle two important free-flowing streams, Hunter Creek and Pistol River, both of which support all wild runs of salmon, steelhead and coastal cutthroat trout. Alarmed by the hard rock mining industry (the number one toxic polluter in the country) setting up shop in his homewaters, Dave joined forces with the Native Fish Society’s staff to stop the mine’s development before it irreversibly damaged some of the wildest country, cleanest water, and healthiest wild salmon, steelhead, and trout rivers on the west coast.

To build grassroots support for protections, Dave canvassed his watershed going door to door with a petition against the mine. Later he was helped by River Stewards James Smith and Sunny Bourdon who hosted events in their rural communities. Our River Stewards raised awareness about the mines, built local business and brewery coalitions to weigh in during public comment opportunities, gained the support of local city councils and their county commissioners, rallied over 500 of their neighbors to turn out to pivotal public hearings, and flooded the public agencies and decision makers with over 64,000 supportive comments. Thanks to this support, in 2015 Oregon Senators Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley and Congressman Peter DeFazio introduced federal legislation in 2015 that laid the ground work for future protections.

Then in early January 2017, this grassroot effort secured it biggest victory yet -- a 20-year mineral withdrawal that protected 101,000 acres of public lands in southwest Oregon from future mining claims. These protections not only benefit these public lands, it also protects the salmon-studded rivers found downstream including the Rogue, Smith, Illinois, Pistol and Hunter Creek.

In 2016, Native Fish Society acknowledged Jim Myron, longtime Crooked River Steward and legislative advocate with our Lifetime Achievement Award -- Native Fish Society’s highest honor. Jim’s skill and reputation as a deft advocate for science based policy played a key role in advancing legislation that benefitted native fish in Oregon’s homewaters.

In 2016, Dave Lacey received our River Steward of the Year award for his tireless work to protect native fish, his homewaters and his community from the threat of strip mining. Through Dave’s local leadership he not only helped secure protections from strip mining, he created a local movement that worked collaboratively with federal agencies, local businesses and citizens to protect public lands and native fish.

HONORING CALIFORNIA’S NATIVE TROUTSOUTH FORK SMITH, CA | Thanks to all our members and supporters who sent comments to the Fish and Wildlife Commission, help from our local Smith River Steward, Sunny Bourdon, and our partners at the Smith River Alliance the California Fish and Wildlife Department designated 64 miles of the upper South Fork Smith River and its tributaries as Heritage Trout Waters in 2016!

The overwhelming support generated by our action alert comments convinced the state of California to recognize the importance of the South Fork Smith’s native rainbow and coastal cutthroat trout populations and covered that stretch of river with better protection from future development and overharvest.

The Heritage Trout Waters Program was started in the 1970s to increase the public’s understanding of and appreciation for the state’s unique fish populations. For more than 40 years, the program has rallied support for the collaborative efforts necessary to maintain a river’s beauty and protect its trout for future generations. Heritage Trout Waters designation is reserved for the state’s most prized, self-sustaining fisheries. With the addition of the South Fork Smith, the first on California’s North Coast, there are now 12 across the state, each of them testaments to remarkable wild, native trout populations.

The Smith’s new Heritage Trout Waters designation is a special distinction that honors an often overlooked value in this coastal river, its magnificent native coastal cutthroat and resident rainbow trout populations.

SOUTH PUGET SOUND, WA | In 2016 Native Fish Society’s River Stewards and staff teamed up with biologists from the Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife to take a closer look at one of the most mysterious wild fish in the Pacific Northwest: Coastal cutthroat trout.

The question our campaign is seeking to answer is a modest one: how many sea-run cutthroat trout spawn in Skookum Creek? But the implications for coastal cutthroat trout and fisheries managers of this subspecies throughout their range is huge.

With the initial money awarded to the Native Fish Society from the Patagonia World Trout Initiative and the Sol Duc Foundation, NFS purchased PIT (Passive Integral Transponder) tags and an array and have been working with WDFW to tag and track adult coastal cutthroat as they migrate in and out of Puget Sound. Using antennas installed throughout the spawning grounds, we can detect the presence of tagged fish, allowing for an accurate count of cutthroat trout by size, time, gender and age as they enter the creek.

By comparing fish counts to redd counts, our campaign will achieve the holy grail of cutthroat research: the number of fish per redd! With an estimate of fish per redd, biologists, fish managers and volunteers can have science guide the management of coastal cutthroat trout!
