Brink Selected to 2016 Nebraska Athletics Hall of Fame ClassNebraska Associate Head Coach Heather Brink will be enshrined in the University of Nebraska Athletics Hall of Fame this fall, the Nebraska Athletics Department announced on

Wednesday, April 13. Brink joins six other Husker alumni student-athletes in the second class to be inducted into the Nebraska Athletics Hall of Fame, which was created last spring. The class is tentatively scheduled to be formally inducted into the Nebraska Athletics Hall of Fame the weekend of Sept. 17, when the Husker football team hosts Oregon at Memorial Stadium. Brink was a two-time national champion as well as an 11-time All-American during her Husker career, which spanned from 1997-2000. Richelle Simpson was the inaugural representative of the women’s gymnastics program, inducted last fall.

Huskers Recognized for Outstanding APRThe Nebraska women’s gymnastics and rifl e programs were honored by the NCAA on Wednesday with public recognition for high achievement in the Academic Progress Rate

(APR). Both programs were among the top 10 percent nationally among all squads in their respective sport. The women’s gymnastics team was one of 23 programs across the country honored for their work in the classroom. Nebraska was joined among the group by fellow Big Ten schools Michigan and Minnesota. All Division I teams’ APR scores will be released April 20. The APR measures eligibility, graduation and retention each term and provides a measure of the academic performance for each team in every sport.

REVIEWING 2015 Nebraska went 28-9 in 2015, fi nishing eighth in the team competition at the NCAA Championships in Fort Worth, Texas. Three Huskers combined for four All-America Awards at the national meet, as NU made its 23rd overall appearance at the championships. The Huskers combined for 43 individual titles and numerous conference and national awards on the season, helping NU remain one of the nation’s top programs. Senior Jessie DeZiel capped her career as one of Nebraska’s most decorated gymnasts, grabbing two All-America awards to give her nine total for her career. She was named Nebraska’s Female Student-Athlete of the Year. Hollie Blanske and Ashley Lambert also captured All-America honors for the Huskers. DeZiel, Blanske, Lambert and Desire’ Stephens each captured All-Big Ten honors, while Jennie Laeng was the Big Ten co-champion on uneven bars. Nebraska continued its strong work in the classroom, as nine Huskers were named academic All-Big Ten and six were named NACGC/W Scholastic All-Americans.

THE LAST TIMEApril 19, 20142014 NCAA Semifi nals - Nebraska 197.100 (3rd/6 - Qualifi es for Super Six)Birmingham, Ala – The Nebraska women’s gymnastics team posted a score of 197.100 the evening of April 19, 2014, to come in third and qualify for its 11th Super Six Finals appearance at the NCAA Championships at the Birmingham Jefferson Convention Complex. In making their 22nd NCAA Championship appearance, the Huskers improved to 28-6 on the year. NU fi nished behind Alabama (197.650) and Florida (197.650) and ahead of Utah (197.025), UCLA (197.000) and Penn State (194.825). Four Huskers combined for a total of seven All-America awards, highlighted by Emily Wong’s trio of accolades of fi rst-team on beam and on fl oor and second-team in the all-around, which brought the senior to a career total of 11 All-America awards. Jessie DeZiel pulled down two All-America selections on beam and in the all-around. The Huskers also made history by collecting four fi rst-team All-Americans on beam with Wong, DeZiel, Hollie Blanske and Jamie Schleppenbach. Nebraska opened competition on fl oor to a 49.350 team score, led by Wong’s 9.95 mark. DeZiel notched a vital performance, scoring a 9.875, while the duo of Ariel Martin and Blanske chipped in 9.85 scores. Desire’ Stephens tallied a beautiful routine to round out the Husker lineup with a 9.825 score. The Big Red moved to vault and earned a team score of 49.200. DeZiel paced NU with a score of 9.875, while Jennie Laeng and Blanske tacked on identical scores of 9.85. After each team had competed on two events, Nebraska sat in third place behind Alabama (98.725) and Florida (98.475) and ahead of UCLA (98.475), Utah (98.250) and Penn State (98.100). Following a bye, the Huskers took to bars putting up a 49.100 team score. The trio of Wong, DeZiel and Stephens all recorded 9.85 marks, while both Blanske and Amanda Lauer added on 9.775 scores. Heading into the fi nal event the Huskers needed an incredible beam score to hold onto their third place spot to advance. Nebraska exceeded expectations by posting a season-high 49.450 to break the Nebraska post-season beam school record of 49.425 from the NCAA West Regional in 2003. NU’s beam lineup was sparked by Amanda Lauer who started the rotation posting a 9.85 career-high score. Four Huskers of Blanske, DeZiel, Schleppenbach and Wong each tabbed a 9.90 score to take home fi rst-team All-America status on the event. “Our beam rotation was so awesome,” Emily Wong said. “Beam is defi nitely a mental game and with it being our last event, we just wanted to do our best. It was so much fun watching every single girl hit their routine, we just kept carrying off of one another.”

LOOKING AHEADAdvancing to the NCAA Super Six Finals will be the top-three team fi nishers from the two semifi nal sessions. The top fi nisher at the NCAA Super Six will be crowned the 2016 NCAA team champion. Competition is set to begin at 8 p.m. (CT) on Saturday and will be televised on ESPNU.

When Nebraska Head Coach Dan Kendig was hired in 1993, his goals were to return the Nebraska gymnastics program to national prominence and to have Nebraska in a position to win a national title, while also maintaining the highest standards of academic excellence for Husker student-athletes.Kendig has not only accomplished those goals, but made them a standard for excellence in his 23-year tenure, as Nebraska is considered among the nation’s elite in both the gym and the classroom. In the 22 seasons of the existence of the NCAA Super Six Finals, Nebraska is one of only six programs, along with Georgia, Alabama, UCLA, Utah and Michigan, to qualify for nine or more team fi nals, and the Huskers have earned NCAA Championship berths in 16 of the past 19 years, including 2016. Under Kendig, 40 NU gymnasts have combined to earn 139 All-America honors since 1995, nearly 10 times NU’s previous total during the program’s fi rst 18 seasons. At the conference level, the results are equally as impressive. Nebraska has won 13 of the past 20 conference titles, including an unprecedented six straight Big Eight/Big 12 crowns from 1994 to 1999. In addition, Nebraska has had at least one individual conference champion in each of the past 20 seasons, including 2016, and 10 all-around champions, while seven gymnasts have been conference newcomers of the year.

Since Kendig arrived at NU, his teams have compiled an outstanding 541-200-4 (.726) record, including a 358-79-2 regular-season record and a 183-121-2 postseason mark. He has also earned national, regional or conference coach-of-the-year honors in 10 of the past 19 seasons.Eleven of Nebraska’s nation-best 15 CoSIDA Academic All-America awards in women’s gymnastics have come under Kendig, while he has also produced two NCAA Woman of the Year fi nalists -- Shelly Bartlett in 1997 and Richelle Simpson in 2005. In addition, Kendig coached Joy Taylor when she became the 1996 CoSIDA Academic All-American of the Year, as well as Simpson, who was recognized with a 2005 NCAA Top Eight Award. Kendig has guided numerous other academic all-conference and NACGC/W Scholastic All-America honorees in his time at Nebraska. For his accomplishments with the Husker gymnastics program, Kendig was honored by his peers as the NCAA Coach of the Year in 1999 and 2003.
