Big Do OD
Roadmap for action
September 2016
Three
We are Do OD
Our goal is to help the NHS deliver the safest, highest quality care to patients by enabling people to transform systems.
Our work is underpinned by principles of Co-production, Curiosity, Creativity & Courage.
Only got a minute? Here’s the headlines!
We had three conversations with our NHS OD community on our three big topics. There were some pertinent messages, often consistent across all three conversations. • Connecting across the system is a key requirement for OD practice, and we can also mirror that by connecting the
community to our partners in ALBs working on improvement and development activities. • Our roles are complex and can sometimes feel overwhelming. Mining the rich field of OD theory and the behavioural science evidence base can help to improve our practice and maximise our impact. • Maintaining and increasing the pace of change is important and so are opportunities to pause and reflect. Without both we risk burn out or paralysis. • Sharing OD success stories is powerful and we could be doing more of that as well as looking at our collective learning
across the OD community.
Actions to take forward include… 1. A national Do OD event in November focusing on OD, STPs, Complexity. 2. Bringing a group together to steer the ‘Role of OD in the NHS’ inquiry 3. Testing a new set of principles for OD Development, Learning & Education 4. Building a resource to help navigate the range of Culture Change tools available 5. Working on the concept of “Place Based OD” and how OD theory could help 6. Training a second cohort of OD Virtual Mentors in collaboration with regional LDP OD Networks 7. Connecting with clinicians and managers to identify OD skills & tools that could be diffused across roles. 8. Identifying what “Strategic OD” means and how to shape impactful OD strategies. 9. Building an “OD Essentials” resource for the community, including Organisational Design. 10. Looking into models of OD Supervision and testing out practical options 11. A national Do OD event in the spring focusing on People Transforming Systems 12. OD in the NHS V next summer – opening the doors to partners in the health & social care system and beyond.
