LION TRACKS Sophomore Jamey Smart came to the plate in the ninth inning with the bases loaded, one out, and the Lions trailing by a run, but the native of San Ramon, Calif. hit into a game-ending 4-3 double play as #21 USC (2-2) escaped Page Stadium with a 4-3 victory over LMU (1-3) on Tuesday night ... LMU, playing its home opener in front of 1,037 fans, trailed 4-1 headed into the bottom of the ninth, but managed to score a pair of runs to make things interesting ... LMU’s only other run in the game came in the third as Ted Boeke answered a solo shot from Adalberto Carillo with a round-tripper of his own to knot the tally at 1-1 ... LMU starter Brenton Arriaga tossed the first 5.2 innings, allowing three runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out a pair in a losing effort ... junior Blake Redman, who threw 3.1 scoreless innings to earn a victory on Friday at #11 TCU, contributed 2.0 scoreless to finish the game on the hill ... freshman CJ Stubbs earned the victory for USC, throwing 6.0 innings and allowing just the Boeke home run while striking out one ... Jeff Paschke, after inducing the game-ending double play, was credited with his first save of the year ... the double play turned for USC was the lone of the night, while LMU managed three in the loss.

FROM THE ‘PEN TO THE ROTATION LMU’s Opening Weekend rotation features three players who made a combined two starts in 2015, and had combined for just 10 starts in their collegiate careers entering 2016 ... while the starts may be limited, the appearances are plenty, as the trio served a vital role in the bullpen last year ... Friday night starter, JD Busfield, set a new LMU single season record for saves with 14 last year while pitching to a 4-2 record and a 1.89 ERA with 35 strikeouts over 27 appearances and 38 innings of work ... the right-hander is the only weekend starter with more than one start to his name coming into this year, making eight as a freshman in 2014 ... Cory Abbott, who opened the year as the Saturday starter, made 27 appearances and one start, pitching to a 1-1 record and a 2.37 ERA over 49.1 innings in his first season with the Lions ... Tyler Cohen, who toes the rubber on Sunday, made 13 appearances and one start last year, after appearing in 20 games out of the bullpen as a freshman in 2014.

IT’S JUST A NUMBER LMU is 31-38-1 against ranked-opponents under head coach Jason Gill over his eight years as head coach ... the Lions are also 7-9 in weekend series over that span ... LMU is currently 1-3 against ranked-foes this season ... the Lions went 1-4-1 last year against such teams, with the lone victory coming in the series finale at #20 Arkansas on 3/8 ... LMU’s best record under Gill against ranked-teams came in his first year (2009) when the Lions went 9-2.

PROSPECT WATCH D1Baseball.com released its 2016 preseason predictions, tabbing the Lions fifth in the WCC race ... in conjunction with the poll, it also released a listing of top prospects on the national scene as well as in the WCC ... junior right-hander J.D. Busfield is tabbed the 143rd-best prospect in the 2016 Draft, while Austin Miller (214) and Cassidy Brown (297) also made the list ... within the WCC, Busfield is tabbed the fourth-best prospect in the conference, while Miller (ninth) and Brown (18th) also cracked the top-20.

ABOUT SAN JOSE STATE San Jose State enters the weekend series with the Lions sporting a 2-3 overall record after splitting a four-game series with UC Irvine last weekend, and dropping a midweek game to Santa Clara on Tuesday night ... Shane Timmons has paced the offense, batting .368 with five runs scored, a home run and four RBI over the five games ... Ozzy Braff has also impressed, collecting a .353 average with two runs scored, a homer and six RBI ... San Jose State is schedule to throw a trio of right-handers at the Lions, beginning with Josh Nashed (0-0, 0.00 ERA) on Friday ... Nashed allowed four hits and struck out three over 4.0 scoreless innings in his first start of the year ... Logan Handzlik (1-0, 3.60 ERA) will start Saturday after allowing two runs on four hits and four walks over 5.0 innings in his first turn ... SURVEY SAYS The LMU baseball team, led by eighth-year head coach Jason Gill, was picked to finish tied with Saint Mary’s for third in the competitive West Coast Conference after a polling all 10 of the head coaches during the preseason ... San Diego, which received six of the 10 first-place votes, topped the conference poll, earning 76 points, while Pepperdine (three) and the Lions (one) both earned at least one first-place vote.

PICKED BEFORE THE PITCH Junior outfielder Austin Miller and sophomore right-hander Sean Watkins were tabbed preseason All-West Coast Conference prior to the start of the 2016 campaign ... Miller is one of 10 position players on the preseason All-WCC squad, while Watkins, who is a two-way player for LMU, is one of five pitchers selected ... Miller was a second team All-WCC selection as a sophomore in 2015 , while Watkins was an honorable mention selection and earned a spot on the All-Freshman team before taking home Freshman All-American honors ... all told, eight of the 10 WCC schools are represented on the preseason All-WCC team, led by Pepperdine which placed two position players and a pitcher on the squad ... USA Baseball announced the 2016 Collegiate National Team coaching staff in early February, including tabbing current LMU head coach, Jason Gill, and former Lion skipper, Dave Snow, as coaches with the team ... the 2016 Collegiate National Team will be led by current University of Oregon Head Coach, George Horton, as Manager ... joining Horton, Gill and Snow will Mitch Karraker, David Pierce and Dave Serrano ... Gill will join the 2016 Collegiate National Team staff after previously working with Horton and Serrano on the 2012 U.S. squad ... during his stint with Team USA in 2012, Gill helped the squad to a 12-5 record and a bronze medal after finishing 5-2 at Honkbal Week hosted at Pim Mulier Stadium in the Netherlands ... a three-time USA Baseball coaching alum, Snow will serve as the Bench Coach for the 2016 squad ... Snow, who guided LMU to its lone College World Se-ries appearance in 1986 and earned Baseball America’s Coach of the Year that season, was an assistant coach for the Collegiate National Team in the Barcelona 1992 Olympic Games, 1995, and at the Atlanta 1996 Olympic Games.

HIT ME WITH YOUR BEST SHOT LMU has picked up right where it left off last year in terms of hit-by-pitches, drawing five so far through four games in 2016 ... never afraid to wear a pitch to reach first base, LMU recorded 89 hit-by-pitches over 55 games last year (1.62 per game) to place third in LMU history and sixth in the nation ... LMU’s existing program record is 112 in 2000, followed by 93 in 1998 ... Austin Miller was hit 16 times last year to lead the way - tied for fifth-most in LMU history ... 15 different Lions registered at least one hit-by-pitch in 2015 ... the high-water mark for the year was five hit batsmen against Saint Joseph’s on 2/21 in the second game of a doubleheader, while LMU failed to record a hit-by-pitch in only 13 games last year ... the five hit-by-pitches were the most for the Lions since recording five at Cal State Fullerton on 5/18/10 ... the Lions also recorded a walk-off hit-by-pitch in a 6-5 victory over Gonzaga on 3/27 in the bottom of the 10th (Wilson).

ALL-CONFERENCE RETURNERS LMU returns three players who received All-WCC recognition at the end of the 2015 season, including juniors Austin Miller and JD Busfield, and sophomore Sean Watkins ... Miller was a second team All-WCC selection in 2015 after hitting .314 with 43 runs scored, 11 doubles, two triples, three homers and 27 RBI while starting all 55 games for the Lions in centerfield ... the speedy outfielder, who reached at a .402 clip, swiped 15 bags in 21 attempts to lead the team, while also pacing the squad in runs, hits and on-base percentage ... Watkins turned in the third-best ERA in LMU history (1.89) as a freshman in 2015, while also register-ing the second-lowest opponent batting average in program history (.201) en route to garnering Freshman All-American honors and an honorable mention All-WCC nod ... Watkins, who did not allow an earned run over his first 19 collegiate innings of work, went 4-1 over 17 appearances and nine starts last year while combining on a pair of shutouts ... Busfield garnered All-West Coast Conference honorable mention accolades in 2015 after setting a new LMU record for saves in a season (14) ... the right-hander pitched to a 4-2 record and a 1.89 ERA with 35 strikeouts over 27 appearances and 38 innings of work ... JOURNEY TO THE TOURNEY For the fourth consecutive year, the West Coast Conference will hold a WCC Champion-ship Tournament at Banner Island Ballpark in Stockton, Calif. from May 28-30 to decide who will claim the WCC’s automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament ... the top-four teams will compete in the tournament, with the #1 seed facing #4 and #2 facing #3 in first-round play ... unlike in previous seasons, the tournament is double elimination throughout, with the winner of the tournament earning the WCC’s automatic bid ... LMU has played for the WCC Championship in each of the last two years (both losses to Pepperdine).

WELLS FARGO PCH CUP Separated by 19.1 miles of scenic coastline, longtime cross-town ad-versaries Loyola Marymount and Pepperdine came together in an effort to boost their decades-long rivalry with the creation of the Wells Fargo Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) Cup ... the series, which is in its seventh year, serves as an annual scorecard for the NCAA-sponsored athletic contests between the Lions and Waves, and challenges each institution

to rise above the other within the West Coast Conference ... any head-to-head competi-tion, including matches in the post-season and tournaments throughout the year, will be counted toward the scoring and added to the scorecard as they occur ... for the sports in which the two teams do not meet head-to-head, the teams will battle for points that will be awarded on the basis of overall finish at their respective post-season championships ... ALL-AMERICAN LIONS Last season ended with a freshman All-American honor for LMU, and the 2016 season has started with an All-American selection - albeit different players ... current sophomore, Sean Watkins, took home Freshman All-American honors according to Baseball America, National Collegiate Baseball Writer’s Association, Collegiate Baseball Newspaper (Louis-ville Slugger), D1Baseball.com and Perfect Game as a two-way player, while junior right-hander JD Busfield has been tabbed a Louisville Slugger third team Preseason All-Amer-ican by Collegiate Baseball ... Watkins posted a team-best 1.89 ERA with a 4-1 record over 17 appearances and nine starts in 2015, while Busfield pitched to a 4-2 record and a 1.89 ERA over 27 appearances and 38 innings of work last year ... the 2016 Friday starter managed six of his LMU record-setting 14 saves, and all four of his wins, in WCC play.

LIONS IN PROFESSIONAL BASEBALL LMU had one former baseball player in the Major Leagues in 2015, as C.J. Wilson (Los Angeles Angels) spent his 11th year on the game’s biggest stage ... Ryan Wheeler (Ari-zona Diamondbacks) and Eric Farris (Minnesota Twins), who also have MLB experience, competed in Minor League Baseball during the 2015 season ... including Wheeler and Farris, 10 former Lions played in the Minor Leagues in 2015, including Tanner Donnels, David Fletcher, Trevor Megill and Colin Welmon, who finished LMU careers in 2015 ... the Lions have had more than 125 players drafted by Major League Baseball teams in program history, including 29 players in the last 10 years ... Billy Traber and Chris Donnels are the lone Lions to be selected in the first round, both selected by the Mets ... Jason Gill enters his eighth year at the helm of the LMU baseball program with the 2016 season. Under Gill’s guidance, LMU has accumulated 39 All-WCC selections, four Freshmen All-Americans, two WCC Defensive Players of the Year, an ABCA All-West Region selection, two WCC Freshmen of the Year, 24 Academic All-Confer-ence selections, an Academic All-District selection, 22 players drafted in the MLB Draft, and has played for the WCC Championship three times.

Consistently bringing top talent into his program, Gill’s 2011 recruiting class was ranked #23 in the nation according to Baseball America, marking the first top-25 class for LMU in 15 years. He then posted a #22 recruiting class in 2013, giving the Lions two Top-25 classes in three years. LMU was one of only six private schools that had a Top-25 recruiting class from 2011 to 2014, and one of only two Non-BCS

schools to have had a Top-25 recruiting class over that span (Cal State Fullerton). In addition, LMU was the only non-BCS private school to have a Top-25 recruiting class during those years, and was the only WCC school to twice have a Top-25 recruiting class. Gill’s incoming class for the 2014 season was tabbed as the 34th-best in the nation according to Collegiate Baseball. LMU was just one of four non-BCS schools to make the list, and just one of five private schools lauded. The class was also tied for the best in the West Coast Conference.

The 2015 season saw the Lions go 33-21-1, reaching the WCC Championship Game for the second straight year. The 33 victories were the most for a Lion team since recording 40 in 2000 (40-19). Seven Lion players garnered All-WCC honors, including David Fletcher earning a spot on the first team for the second straight year. David Ed-wards, Austin Miller and Colin Welmon found themselves on the second team, while J.D. Busfield, Trevor Megill and Sean Watkins took home honorable mention honors. Watkins would also receive Freshman All-American accolades as a two-way player. In the June Amateur Draft, LMU had a player selected in the sixth, seventh and eighth rounds, marking the first time since 2005 that LMU has had three players selected in the top-10 rounds.

The Lions finished 2014 with a 32-24 overall record (best since 2004) and a 17-10 mark in the WCC to claim second place and a spot in the WCC Championship Tournament. David Fletcher and Austin Miller earned first team Freshman All-American honors, including becoming the first duo to be tabbed in the same year by Baseball America. Fletcher also took home WCC Defensive Player of the Year in his freshman season, keeping the award with the Lions for the second straight year.

The 2013 season saw Gill’s arsenal of talented pitchers finish the year with an LMU record 3.17 ERA, led by a trio of All-WCC selections in right-handers Colin Welmon, Aaron Griffin and Patrick McGrath. The Lions also featured the WCC Defensive Player of the Year in Colton Plaia and honorable mention selections in David Edwards, Zac Fujimoto and Cullen Mahoney.

Gill guided his 2012 squad to a share of third place in the West Coast Conference. In a year that saw the Lions earn the 23rd spot in Baseball America’s Top-25 recruiting classes, Gill helped his players to six All-WCC se-lections at the end of the season, including freshmen Trevor Megill and Colin Welmon as staples of the class. Reaching a coaching milestone, Gill earned his 100th career victory on April 20, 2012, a 5-3 victory over Portland.

At the conclusion of the 2012 campaign, Gill spent the summer of 2012 serving as an assistant coach for the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team, helping the squad to a 12-5 record and a bronze medal after finishing 5-2 at Honkbal Week hosted at Pim Mulier Stadium in the Netherlands.

Gill’s 2011 Lions posted an overall record of 20-25, the best record since 2004 to that point. The Lions, who finished tied for third in the West Coast Conference, began the year with a 7-1 record and closed the year by winning four of their last five games. Gill and his coaching staff also guided the LMU pitching staff to a 3.25 team ERA in 2011. The Lions placed five players on All-Conference teams, while four were taken in the MLB draft, including three in the first 12 rounds for the first time since 2005.

The 2010 season saw the Lions record a series sweep over perennial powerhouse Cal State Fullerton, including a victory over then-No. 9 Fullerton on May 18, and a series victory over Fresno State on the road. The 2010 season also culminated in the first All-American selection under Gill as a head coach, as 2010 West Coast Conference Freshman of the Year Matt Lowenstein was named a Freshman All-American by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper and Ping!Baseball.

LMU finished in second place in the WCC in 2009 after posting a 30-29 overall record and a 13-8 mark in con-ference play to earn a spot in the WCC Championship Series. The Lions’ 8-2 start in 2009 was the best since the 1988 season, and it was also the best start over the first 10 games for a first-year skipper in LMU program history. Gill’s 2009 squad finished the year with a 9-2 record against ranked-opponents, including recording a four-game sweep of then-defending National Champion Fresno State and a crucial three-game sweep over WCC-foe San Diego. Proving they can play with any team in Southern California, widely considered one of the toughest regions in the country, LMU also knocked-off perennial powerhouses, then-No. 5 UC Irvine and sixth-ranked Cal State Fullerton, in 2009. Although those victories were highlights for LMU players and fans alike, they were likely even bigger for Gill, as he coached at both programs after taking the field as a player for the Titans in 1994.

For the four years preceding his start as LMU’s seventh skipper, Gill worked under head coach George Horton at Oregon and Cal State Fullerton, serving as an infield coach, recruiting coordinator and as a primary hitting instructor. Gill is no stranger to starting a program from the ground up, taking on the task twice, most recently at the University of Oregon. Gill was Horton’s first hire as both men left Cal State Fullerton to begin the reconstruc-tion of the Duck baseball program in 2007.

Always considered one of the best recruiters in college baseball, Gill’s 2007 recruiting class was ranked in the top-10 in the nation by both Collegiate Baseball and Baseball America.In the three years preceding the move to Eugene, Ore., the Titans made it to Omaha and the College World Series twice, won two Big West Conference titles and had 35 players drafted. The three-year stint under Horton was Gill’s second on the Fullerton coaching staff, having started his coaching career as an undergraduate assistant for legendary skipper, and Division I baseball’s all-time winningest coach, Augie Garrido. In that first term, Gill served essential roles on both the 1995 National Championship and 1996 Fullerton squads.

Before his return to Fullerton, Gill spent three seasons as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for UC Irvine, as the coaching staff resurrected the baseball program from extinction. After just three years of develop-ing the program, Gill helped lead UCI to a NCAA Regional in 2004.

Furthering his reputation as a standout recruiter, the Anteaters’ 2002 recruiting class was ranked eighth in the country by Baseball America, with the following two classes among Collegiate Baseball’s top-30. Overall, Gill has served as a collegiate recruiting coordinator directly for seven years, recording six recruiting classes in the top-30 and two in the top-10 over that span.

Prior to UCI, Gill was an assistant coach at Loyola Marymount where he helped guide the Lions to their most recent WCC titles and playoff berths in 1999 and 2000. Over that two-year span, nine LMU players moved on to professional baseball. Perhaps the most successful draft year in LMU history, Gill watched six of his Lion ball-players sign professional contracts in 2000, including one player in each of the first three rounds.

Coach Gill also served two years as an assistant coach at Nevada in 1997 and 1998. While there, the Wolfpack made the postseason for just the second time in school history. Serving as the team’s hitting coach and working closely with the infielders, Gill guided the 1997 team to nine offensive team records at Nevada. In addition, his tutelage of the infielders was instrumental in placing Nevada first in the country in double plays in both seasons.

Before embarking on his coaching career, Gill played one year at Cal State Fullerton, hitting .345, scoring 28 runs and starting 43 games at third base as a senior. That year, the All-Big West Conference infielder helped the Titans to a 47-16 overall record and a College World Series berth. Gill started his collegiate career playing two seasons at Cuesta College before playing his junior campaign at Cal State Dominguez Hills.

Overall, Coach Gill has been to Omaha four times as a player and a coach. In addition, he has been to the postseason a total of nine times, coached four Conference Players of the Year, including three infielders directly under his guidance, and been a part of six Conference Championships.

A local product who prepped at Mater Dei HS in Santa Ana, Calif., Gill received his bachelor’s degree from Cal State Fullerton in kinesiology in 1996. Gill, who was born April 7, 1970, lives with his wife, Kacey, and son, Shane.
