CAST YOUR VOTE FOR THE NHLA ANNUAL CONVENTION OCTOBER 5-7, WASHINGTON D.C.

I would like to say when NHLA’s Board of Managers selected Washington, D.C. as the setting for the 2016 Annual Convention we had the foresight to know that the annual conference would take place at the very epicenter of one of the most unique, bizarre and hotly contested political races in our nation’s history.

Sometimes you just get lucky – fasten your seat belts, this year’s conference is going to be an amazing experience, and you are not going to want to miss a thing!

Consider the fact that the Omni Shoreham in D.C. is one of the chain’s most historical properties. This Art-Deco masterpiece was the home of our nation’s inaugural balls for more than 70 years. The Omni is also in the heart of some of the city’s most popular attractions, including the National Zoo and Embassy Row, so be sure to bring the family.

Washington is a city steeped in history and tradition, yet constantly challenged to improve the value it offers – sounds a lot like NHLA. For more than 119 years, the Board of Managers and staff have worked hard to continually provide you with the most up to date and relevant year round services to help you succeed.

Throughout its history, the Annual Conference has been the meeting place, a reunion of sorts, where members across our vast international supply chain meet. It’s where old business partners create new opportunities, and new partners redefine what success looks like for our future.

For NHLA, success looks like the opportunity to provide its members with access to thought provoking political pundits like Charles Krauthammer and Robert Reich. There is no better time to hear their perspective on this ground breaking election and what we can expect in the future. In my opinion, this session alone will be worth the trip!

But wait – we offer so much more.

This is also the conference where the global hardwood industry’s best and brightest gather in one place to share new ideas, learn from industry experts, and redefine what makes our industry great. And this year’s educational program has been designed to meet the needs of our diverse audience.

We are offering world class speakers focusing on topics ranging from current issues impacting the industry to the latest news on phytosanitary certificates and what’s happening in interna-tional markets. For the first time in many years, we are also bringing the National Inspectors to the Exhibit Showcase floor with a Lumber Grading Seminar.

Also new to the show this year is NHLA’s Executive Director, Lorna D. Christie. I hope you will find the time to seek her out; she will be the one taking notes as she walks the floor to introduce herself to learn more about what makes NHLA, and our industry, so great.

It is an NHLA conference, so we cannot forget to schedule a little “fun with a purpose.” Once again, we will be hosting the very popular Hardwood Forest Foundation Golf Tournament where you have the opportunity to not only support an important cause, but also to do a little deal making as you play alongside the buyers and sellers important to your business.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

NHLA is blessed with members who contribute in so many ways to make our conference suc-cessful. Take for example, David Jacobs of TJT Consulting, whose leadership and generosity as the Presenting Sponsor has been instrumental in our ability to provide our members with the ideal conference experience. Thanks to all of our sponsors who have made such important contri-butions to the success of this year’s event.

If you haven’t registered, or selected your exhibit booth - I have to ask - do you really want to miss this? Only a few sponsorships and booths are still available – what are you waiting for? We will be more than pleased to help you make the decision. Call John Hester at 901-399-7558 today to discuss how you can play a role in this premiere event!

I hope to see you in Washington, and thanks again for the privilege of serving as your President.

Pem Jenkins, NHLA President Turn Bull Lumber Company

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR'S MESSAGE

THERE'S NO BETTER TIME TO VISIT D.C.

Summer is almost here and we all know what that means – your NHLA team and Board of Managers are focused on creating an outstanding member experience at the 119th NHLA Annual Convention & Exhibit Showcase in Washington, D.C. Conference registrations are coming in fast, so I do hope you have made marked your calendars and made plans to join us October 5-7 in a city that is unlike any other in the world.

I am looking forward to October for a number of reasons. As a newcomer to the industry, I’ll certainly be taking advantage of the incredible conference learning opportunities we have made available for our attendees. And as Pem noted in his article, I will be the one in the hallways with a notepad and pen, networking and learning from the industry’s leaders.

Having spent most of my career working in public and government affairs, I can tell you there is no better time to visit Washington than right before, or after, a presidential election that will be forever noted in our history books. The city has a different feel, fueled by the quest for being the first to know the answer to the timeless D.C. question – what’s happening next? And of course, the “great American tradition” of the Capitol Hill political gossip mills are on full steam ahead.

You can almost feel the power shift as old leaders and their entourages prepare to exit, and new leaders emerge. And with every change in administrations, trade associations like NHLA must remain ever vigilant in protecting our industry from unnecessary or mis-guided legislation. That is particularly true as some D.C. politicos rush to make their mark as they see their time in the city drawing to a close. With that in mind, I look forward to catching up with Dana Cole and other members of the Hardwood Federation to experi-ence firsthand the important role they play in navigating “what’s next” for our industry.

But there is also much to be done before October. Like recognizing Hartzell Hardwoods, the newest member of NHLA’s 100 Year Club. Hartzell joins an elite group of twelve other legacy members who have helped define NHLA’s value over the last century.

From its very beginning, Hartzell’s business model is best described as “pioneering”, from its innovations in steaming walnut to creating a higher value product to the ef-ficiencies the company introduced in its sawmills over five generations. They are also an example of the contributions our industry made during World I and II, producing gunstocks and walnut airplane propellers.

As with all of our 100-year members, we will be creating a video to highlight Hartzell’s 135-year commitment to quality and innovation. We will be posting the video on nhla.com so we will be sure to let you know when it is available, and I am certain NHLA’s Facebook page will highlight NHLA's visit as well.

I look forward to seeing you in Washington!

Lorna D. Christie, Executive Director 901-377-1082 direct | [email protected]

I would also like to

recognize NHLA’s

longest serving

team member,

Jack has worked

Thank you Jack, for your service.

ROBERT B. REICH Economic Analyst, CNBC Contributor, Professor, Author, Advisor to Presidents and Former Secretary of Labor

Robert B. Reich is one of the world's leading thinkers about work and the economy. Now Chancellor's Professor of Public Policy at the University of California at Berkeley, he has served under three national administrations, most recently as Secretary of Labor under Bill Clinton. He also served on President Barack Obama's economic transition advisory board. In 2008, TIME magazine named him one of the ten most successful cabinet secretaries of the past century.

Reich is the author of 15 books including The Work of Nations, which has been translated into 22 languages, and the bestsellers Locked in the Cabinet and The Future of Success, which in 2002 was ranked by Business Week magazine as the #2 best-selling business book. His book, Super capitalism, published in 2007, warned of the perils of an under-regulated and over-leveraged financial system. In his 2010 best seller, Aftershock: The Next Economy and America's Future, Reich looks at where the economy is heading after the Great Recession and what to expect over the next decade. His book Saving Capitalism (September, 2015) examines the building blocks of the American economy and explores methods of preserving growth, while simultaneously spreading benefits.

Reich is the co-creator and host of the widely acclaimed 2013 documentary, Inequality for All, in which he explains the underlying forces that are shaping our economy and lays out pragmatic solutions for a broader prosperity.

Reich has a nationally-syndicated column and he also writes frequently for The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times and The Financial Times. He is a contributor to CNBC, and a frequent panelist on ABC's This Week and other television programs.

In late 2003, Reich was awarded the prestigious Vaclev Havel prize, in Prague, for his original contributions to economic thinking. The Wall Street Journal has named him one of the nation's top ten thought leaders.

2016KEYNOTE PANEL

General Session Keynote Panel Presentation by Dana Cole, Crystal Oldham, Dr. Chad Oliver and Buddy ShowalterFriday, October 7 at 8:30amRegency BallroomSponsored by Pennsylvania & Indiana Lumbermens Mutual Insurance Companies

Dana Cole, Executive Director Hardwood FederationDana Cole, a native of Michigan, which is home to more than 250 hardwood businesses, began her career working for Governor John Engler as a policy advisor. She then spent eight years with the Michigan Economic Development Corporation in several roles where she promoted small and large businesses in the state, and successfully negotiated regulatory disputes. Dana joined Hardwood Federation as Executive Director in June of 2012. Previously, Cole had been at the 11,000-member National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) as the Vice President of Corporate Affairs and Corporate Board Secretary. While there she achieved many successes, including improving Board recruitment, retention, and satisfaction; streamlining and modernizing board management practices; raising non-dues revenue; and saving NAM members millions of dollars.

Crystal Oldham, Executive Director Hardwood Forest FoundationCrystal Oldham has served as Executive Director of the Hardwood Forest Foundation for the past 10 years. In this role, Oldham is responsible for the overall operations of the organization, as well as the development and implementation of its educational outreach programs. Growing up in a family of loggers, Oldham ironically never really understood the benefits of harvesting until years later when she joined the NHLA staff as the Assistant Editor of Hardwood Matters. In addition to this role with NHLA, she also served as the Director of Education for the Association, overseeing the day to day operations of the Inspector Training School and Continuing Education programs.

Prior to her roles in the forest products industry, Oldham was News Director for Thunderbolt Broadcasting Company’s three Northwest Tennessee radio stations, as well as a freelance writer for The Weakley County Press. In addition, she served the State of Tennessee’s Department of Financial Institutions as Consumer Educator Coordinator, where she developed and implemented financial literacy programs for Tennesseans.

A discussion of the challenges facing advocates of the Hardwood industry as they work to educate the public, policy makers and consumers of the benefits of wood products to their homes and environment.

Dr. Oliver has a wide geographic range of expertise. Much of his early research work is incorporated in a book he wrote entitled Forest Stand Dynamics (1990, and update edition in 1996) with a former student as co-author. He is currently working on landscape approaches to management and global resource issues and is involved in the technical tools, policies, and management approaches. He is interested in integrated, global, trade-off approaches to sustaining renewable energy, biodiversity, other resources, and human quality of life. If you own a substantial interest in a closely- held lumber company, a succession plan may be the single most important component of your retirement and estate plan. What about your retirement? Are there one or more buyers ready, willing and able to purchase yourinterest in the business at a fair price? Without an effective business succession plan, your retirement, death or long-term disability couldmean an end, or significantly impact thebusiness you worked so hard to build. CURRENT ISSUES AFFECTING HARDWOOD LUMBER COMSUMPTION AND PRICE by William Luppold, Economist USDA Forest Service - Forest Inventory & Analysis Sponsored by Champlain Hardwoods, Inc.

This seminar will examine changes in hardwood lumber consumption and price over the last decade and contrast the current market for hardwood lumber to the market over the last 50 years.

Specific topics to be covered include: 1. The extent of the decline in hardwood production and consumption during the 2008 to 2010 downturn and the recovery since then. 2. How much hardwood lumber prices have declined in historic terms after accounting for inflation. 3. Regional shifts in the domestic industries that consume hardwood lumber. Which states and regions have fared better, which have done worse. 4. The suitability of the changing hardwood resource given current consumption trends.

William LuppoldWilliam has been analyzing hardwood product markets for 38 years. Over his career he has conducted research on domestic and international hardwood product consumption, production and price; changes in the U.S. hardwood timber resource; and how markets influence forest composition.

AN UPDATE FROM THE USDA ANIMAL & PLANT HEALTH INSPECTION SERVICE by John Tyrone Jones, USDA Trade Director, Forestry Products at USDA-APHIS

In this seminar you will learn what APHIS is doing to streamline the PHYTO process to expedite shipments. A brief history of phytosanitary certification will be given, leading up to the policy changes that allow treatment certificates from approved inspection agencies to be used as proof for phytosanitary certification. How the NHLA KD Certification Program fits in to the overall process of APHIS and how the industry certificate specifically fits in the APHIS regulations and the benefits/authorities provided by that inclusion will also be explained.

Additional time will be spent discussing the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) situa-tion as a whole and the efforts to change the EU regulations to a systems approach-overview of the domestic problems and the concerns of the EU; explanation of the current requirements; then an overview of the systems approach itself and an update on its progress in the EU.

John Tyrone JonesTyrone began working for the United States Department of Agriculture, Animal and Plant Health Inspection Services, Plant Protection and Quarantine (PPQ) in October of 1996. Since that time he has served as a PPQ technician; PPQ officer; a PPQ supervisor; a Customs and Border Protection supervisor for bioterrorism control; a PPQ Export Specialist for the NAPPO countries and wood packaging material issues worldwide;

and is currently the Trade Director for Forestry Products, encompassing the import, export, and trade of international forestry products. He is a member of the International Forestry Quarantine Research Group, is Chairing the North American Plant Protection Organization’s (NAPPO) Forestry Working Group, and a sitting member of the Technical Panel for Forestry Quarantine under the IPPC. When time permits, you can find him on a boat or a bank, fishing, hoping, or catching.

SAVING FOSSIL FUEL AND CO2 WITH WOOD PRODUCTS, WHILE CREATING BETTER FOREST ECOSYSTEMS AND MORE RURAL EMPLOYMENTby Dr. Chad Oliver, Pinchot Professor of Forestry and Environmental Studies School of Foresty and Environmental Studies Yale University

Forests can provide all three simultaneously: 1. More fossil fuel and CO2 savings using creative innovations in wood products; 2. Better forest ecosystems by using modern decision tools to ensure sustainable biodiversity, water, and forest health; 3. More rural employment by using appropriate technology.

In this session Dr. Chad Oliver will describe the current conditions of the United States’ and world’s forests. He will describe future population needs and concerns and how wood can help, as well as, describe the current scientific thinking of dynamic forests.

This session will integrate the above themes into a direction that forests could be managed to provide all three of the above together.

Dr. Chad OliverChad Oliver is originally from South Carolina, where he grew up working for his father’s forest management company. He received his Bachelor’s in forestry from The University of the South, Sewanee, Tennessee. He did his graduate work at Yale University, was briefly at the Harvard Forest, and then on the University of Washington forestry faculty in the Pacific Northwest for twenty-seven years. He returned to Yale University in 2002 as the Pinchot Professor. Professor Oliver is a Fellow in the Society of American Foresters, was one of three “Host Country Scientific Achievement” awardees at the global IUFRO conference in Salt Lake City in 2014, and has been awarded two honorary doctorates. Dr. Oliver is the author of more than 150 scientific and technical papers. His work has taken him to all parts of the United States and to Canada, Mexico, Turkey, Nepal, Japan, Thailand, Sweden, Finland, Russia, Ecuador, India, China, Germany, France, Austria, South Korea, Brazil, Chile, Ukraine, Bhutan, Liberia, and Australia.

INTERNATIONAL BUYER'S PANEL by American Hardwood Export CouncilSponsored by Thompson Hardwood

Following a statistical analysis of US hardwood exports by AHEC Executive Director Mike Snow, this session will feature a panel of AHEC overseas directors and consultants to discuss the latest export market trends behind those numbers, as well as, answer your questions on the opportunities and threats facing our industry in overseas markets. The panel will feature AHEC directors David Venables (Europe); John Chan (Greater China and Southeast Asia); Luis Zertuche (Mexico and Latin America); Takahiro Tsuji (Japan); and Rod Wiles (India, Middle East and Oceania).

John Chan joined the American Hardwood Export Council as Director of its Southeast Asia and Greater China Office when the regional office was established in Hong Kong in 1992. He is responsible for developing marketing strategies and programs for the promotion of American hardwood in the region covering China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

A science graduate from the University of British Columbia, Canada, John has accumulated over 30 years of working experience in forest products, of which more than 20 years were devoted to the promotion of American hardwood products.

Takahiro Tsuji joined the American Hardwood Export Council as Director of its Osaka, Japan office in 1992. He has organized Hang Tag Promotion, Eco-Furniture Contests, Eco-Interior Project and Architect Seminars, etc. to introduce the effective usage of American hardwood to Japanese end-users since 2000. And he has been visiting Japanese furniture & interior materials manufacturers, architects, designers and lumber importers individually for providing the current information of American hardwoods to them and has been trying to find out some possibility of piggyback promotions of American hardwoods with them. Since 2006 he had been negotiating with the Forestry Agency of the Japanese Government about the legality of American hardwood and the American Hardwood Responsible Procurement Policy (AHEC RPP) has been admitted as one of legality officially in Japan in 2009. Now, AHEC is the only authorized overseas association to be able to issue the legality under Green Procurement Law in Japan.

He was born in Osaka in 1957 and graduated from Kuwansei Gakuin University in Nishiomiya, Hygo in 1981.

HFF EVENTS

The Foundation’s Annual Golf Tournament has become quite a hit…it’s a wonderful way to kick off Convention activities. The event keeps getting bigger and better! Located in the shadow of the monuments, historic East Potomac Golf Course is a part of the National Park System. East Potomac features three distinct courses with varying features and levels of difficulty. East Potomac's Blue Course not only provides golfers with a challenging but fair golf course, but also provides some of Washington's greatest landmarks in the background. Most noticeable is the Washington Monument, visible from any location on the course. Other landmarks include Ronald Reagan National Airport, Fort McNair, the Naval War College and the Jefferson Memorial.

The course is a Walter Travis design from the early 1900's. Often described as a Links style course, your most difficult round at East Potomac will come when the wind coming off the Potomac River is at its strongest.
