LETTER FROM THE RACE DIRECTOR

The Houston Marathon Committee welcomes you to the forty-fourth annual Chevron Houston Marathon and its companion races, the Aramco Houston Half Marathon and the ABB 5K.

This year, more runners than ever will be able to run the marathon and half marathon because two years of experience with our 2014 course revisions have confi rmed that our Committee can safely add 2,000 total slots. On the professional running front, the Chevron Houston Marathon will maintain its tradition of an impressive international fi eld, while the Aramco Houston Half Marathon will boast a fully international fi eld for only the third time since 2006. We are especially eager to see how the international professionals perform on what is clearly a very speedy half marathon course after an amazing 76 Americans achieving U.S. Olympic Trials Marathon qualifying times last year on that course. In sum, our 2016 races will be the best opportunity yet for the elite athletes to rewrite the record books.

The ABB 5K is now in its fourth year as the leadoff race of the weekend, and its second year of a great new start line immediately adjacent to Discovery Green. More than a third of the participants in the ABB 5K will also line up on Sunday morning so that they can add the “Houston Double” medal to their collection.

One last item that might interest readers is that our Committee was recently presented with the prestigious 2015 Green Award by the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races for our eff orts in promoting the environmental sustainability of our races. We hope that all of our participants, volunteers and spectators appreci-ate our eff orts in this area, and will help us achieve ever-higher levels of ecological stewardship. Reduce, reuse and recycle!

Please help us in thanking all of our sponsors by using and promoting their products and services whenever possible. We also thank the City of Houston, the City of West University Place and their respective departments and agencies for allowing us to use their streets and other public accommodations. Our events would not exist without all of their valuable contributions.

Finally, we thank you for participating in, volunteering for or simply cheering on the runners at all of the weekend’s races. In particular, we thank the runners for showing their confi dence in our ability to host a series of world-class races. See you at the fi nish line!

LETTER FROM CHEVRON

January 17, 2016

Chevron Houston Marathon Participants,

It is my honor to welcome you to the 2016 Chevron Houston Marathon. Together with the Aramco Houston Half Marathon and the ABB 5K, these races mark the city’s largest weekend sporting event, attracting some of the world’s best competitors and over 30,000 runners.

The residents of the City of Houston will be cheering you on as you make your way from Congress Street, through Rice Village and the Galleria, along Memorial Drive and into downtown. As the title sponsor for the past 11 years, it has been our privilege to sound the starting gun and hold the tape at the fi nish line.

These races could not happen without the eff orts of more than 7,500 volunteers who have contributed their time and energy throughout the year to make race day a success. Their tireless dedication is essential to delivering such a grand event. Additionally, the ‘Run for a Reason’ charity program that is supported by thousands of runners, fundraisers and donors, benefi ts over 60 Houston-area charities. In 2015, more than 19,000 donations were made, resulting in $2.5 million being raised during the year. The ‘Run for a Reason’ charity program has surpassed the $23 million fundraising mark since its inception in 1995.

Your commitment and determination in taking on the challenge of a marathon serve as an inspiration to our community. On behalf of the people of Chevron, I applaud you for everything that has brought you to this moment – your time, perseverance and training – and I will continue my applause as you cross the fi nish line.

Sincerely,

Jeff Shel lebargerJeff Shellebarger

RUNNER’S GUIDE TO RACE DAYAfter months of preparation and vigorous training, race day is fi nally here! Below are some helpful tips to make your race day stress-free.

ARRIVE EARLY! The George R. Brown Convention Center (GRB) will open at 5:00 a.m. The Houston Police Department will begin closing streets along the course at 6:00 a.m., so participants who plan to drive to the event should plan ahead and be familiar with the downtown street closures. A parking map and list of downtown street closures is provided on page 22.

Protestant Church Service (Hall C) and Catholic Mass (Hall E) will be held at 5:30 a.m. inside the GRB.

CHECK YOUR GEAR CHECK BAG. Detach the “gear check” ticket from the top of your race bib and affi x it to the gear check bag you

will be checking at the Gear Check area (Hall C and D). Remember you may only check the gear check bag you received at the EXPO at Gear Check. All checked gear must be picked up by 2:00 p.m.

GET TO THE START LINE EARLY. Head to the start line at least 30 minutes before your corral gate closes. “A” corral gates close at 6:40 a.m., “B” corral gates close at 6:50 a.m. and “C” corral gates close at 7:00 a.m. The color of your bib corresponds to your assigned cor-ral start. Once in your assigned corral, seed yourself with the pace sign of your expected pace per mile. Check out the start line map for directions on how to get to each start line area from the GRB. Re-member, your timing B-tag is attached to your bib so don’t remove it!

SMILE! Capture your accomplishment and get a fi nisher photo taken in the GRB runner entrance, just inside Hall E. Don’t forget

START LINE MAP GEORGE R. BROWN CONVENTION CENTER MAP

RunnersGuide.indd 2 12/15/15 9:54 PM

Page 17: 2016 Houston Marathon Program

ChevronHoustonMarathon.com 17

to have your photo taken before leaving this area – once you have entered the GRB, you won’t be able to go back to the photo area.

GET YOUR WELL-DESERVED FINISHER SWAG! Offi cial marathon fi nishers will receive a medal, mug and a Skechers fi nisher shirt. Half marathon fi nishers will receive a medal and a Skechers fi nisher shirt. To claim your merchandise, detach the “fi nisher ticket” from the bottom of your bib and turn this ticket in at the fi nisher merchandise area inside the GRB. Don’t forget to pick up your merchandise because fi nisher items will not be mailed.

ENJOY A HOT, FRESH MEAL FROM H-E-B. Free post-race re-freshments will be available to all race participants on Sunday. Participants can receive a hot, fresh meal at the H-E-B Food Court

by redeeming the “food” ticket from the bottom of your marathon or half marathon bib. The H-E-B Food Court will close at 1:30 p.m. MEET UP WITH FAMILY AND FRIENDS! Designate a place to meet your family and friends after the race. We encourage you to use the reunion area in Hall A of the GRB. The reunion area in Hall A is open to the public and will be designated by suspended banners with letters of the alphabet such as A-C and D-G, etc. Runners should encourage friends and family members to meet them after the race under the first letter of the runner’s last name.

CELEBRATE! Head out to the We Are Houston RunFest on Jones Lawn in Discovery Green Park just outside the GRB. Celebrate while enjoying refreshments, beverages and music!

TOP 10 SPOTS TO WATCH THE MARATHONThe color and excitement of the Chevron Houston Marathon would not be complete without the 250,000 cheering fans who line the course. After consulting with marathon veterans and spectators, here are the top 10 places to watch the race, along with ap-proximate times that runners are expected to pass these landmarks. Places within the fi rst eight miles also provide a view of Ar-amco Houston Half Marathon participants.

And remember, runner bibs are personalized with their fi rst name or nickname, so you can cheer them on as they pass by. Pitch a chair, park your cooler and cheer!

Start/Finish Line The George R. Brown Convention

Mile 7: Bissonnet and MandellThe last place to see runners in

both the marathon and half marathon is at the corner of Bissonnet and Mandell, where runners either go straight for the half marathon route or take a right turn for the marathon.

The City of Houston is proud to host runners from all 50 U.S. states and 29 foreign countries at the 43rd Chevron Houston Marathon and companion Aramco Houston Half Marathon and ABB 5K. The event’s city-wide courses will take participants and spectators through some of Houston’s most interesting and historical neighborhoods, allowing them to truly experience the diversity and energy of the fourth largest city in the nation.

Downtown STArT/FiniSHDowntown Houston is the seventh largest downtown business district in the United States and has the third most concentrated skyline after new York City and Chicago. Many downtown buildings are connected by an underground pedestrian Tunnel System which also houses restaurants and shops. Houston’s 17-block Theater District is the second largest in the nation behind new York City, and is home to eight performing arts organizations with more than 12,000 seats. The Downtown Aquarium features 500,000 gallons of marine life, a white tiger exhibit, restaurants, a boardwalk and even a carnival. The area provides 70 dining and entertainment options to choose from, including restaurants ranging from award-winning and upscale to memorable deli shops and cafes, to live music, concerts and professional sports. Downtown is also home to Minute Maid Park and the Toyota Center, homes of the Houston Astros and Houston rockets, respectively. The two-time Major League Soccer Champion Houston Dynamo also call downtown home at the BBVA Compass Stadium.

Washington CorridorMiLeS 1-3A glittering, fresh-faced crowd swarms this eclectic mix of luxurious lounges, honky tonks, wine bars and some of the most-loved restaurants in the city. The strip, which stretches east from Memorial Park to Downtown, recently experienced a resurgence, as dilapidated properties were torn down and replaced with

townhouses, mixed-use developments and high-energy hot spots. After the sun goes down, catch a seat on The Wave—Houston’s first ‘jitney’ shuttle in more than 15 years. The taxi-bus concept enables riders to enjoy a fixed-route, fixed-rate shuttle within the Washington Avenue District, Midtown and the Heights.

upper Kirby/River OaksMiLeS 4-6Make your way through the lush and luxurious river Oaks area, which contains

some of the most coveted (and expensive) real estate in the city. But it’s not only the mansions that draw onlookers; there are plenty of boutiques, restaurants and art galleries that give the inner-loop spot its character. At the river Oaks Shopping Center, restaurants and retail live alongside the historic river Oaks Theatre—the oldest working theater in the city. Upper Kirby and the adjacent Greenway Plaza area are at the center of Houston’s growth. The multi-use West Ave project is the heart of Upper Kirby with its assortment of excellent restaurants and fine boutiques.

texas Medical Center/Rice universityMiLeS 7-10The Texas Medical Center is the largest medical center in the world, housing 42 medicine-related institutions, 13 hospitals and two medical schools. Altogether, 4.8 million patients visit the Texas Medical Center each year. Across Main Street from the Medical Center is the 285-acre, tree-lined campus of the prestigious Rice University. Many of Houston’s runners frequent the shaded gravel track that lines the perimeter of this beautiful campus. Just two blocks away, the rice Village Shopping Center attracts Houstonians to its eclectic shops, restaurants and bars, which are all within a 16-block area. Also adjacent to the Medical Center is Hermann Park, which contains the Houston Zoo, Houston Garden Center, Miller Outdoor Theatre, Houston Museum of Natural Science and Hermann Park Golf Course, which was the first desegregated public golf course in the United States.

the City of West university PlaceMiLeS 10-12The City of West University Place, better known as “West U,” is located in the heart of the Houston metropolitan area just minutes from downtown Houston, the Galleria and Texas Medical Center. Despite its central location, West University Place has a “small town” feel while providing convenient access to big

Fun FaCts if Houston were an

independent nation, it would rank as the world’s 30th largest economy.

Home to 5,000+ energy related firms, Houston is considered by many as the energy Capital of the world.

More than 90 languages are spoken throughout the Houston area.

Houston boasts 40+ colleges, university and institutions.

Houston has 500+ cultural, visual and performing arts organizations, 90 of which are devoted to multicultural and minority arts and is one of five u.s. cities that offer year-round resident companies in all major performing arts.

Houston is home to the Houston Livestock show and Rodeo, the largest rodeo in the world attracting more than 2.5 million visitors each year.

city amenities. West University Place’s tree-lined streets, impressive homes and expansive park system are second to none.

The GalleriaMiles 13-16The Galleria area, also known as Uptown, is Houston’s best-known shopping district and second-largest business district. stainless steel gateways, arches and halos over the major intersections give this area a sleek, modern look that fits well with its status as the center of Houston’s fashion scene. The Galleria area landmarks include The Galleria Mall, which features three million square feet of retail space that attracts over 24 million annual visitors, is the largest

mall in Texas and seventh-largest in the United states. it includes more than 375 fine stores and restaurants, an ice skating rink and two Westin hotels. Across the street is a 64-story skyscraper known as Williams Tower, topped by a rotating beacon light that can be seen 40 miles away. Perched behind this Tower is the lofty Water Wall, which is a perfect place to come and rest after the long race. As you walk along the lush green space and enter this structure, look up and listen to the thundering gush of water as it patters against the steps in front of you.

Memorial ParkMiles 18-22Memorial Park is one of the largest urban parks in the United states

covering approximately 1,466 acres. From 1917 to 1923, the current park’s land was the site of Camp Logan, a World War i training facility for the U.s. Army. in May 1924, the City of Houston took ownership of the land, and created a “memorial” park dedicated to the memory of soldiers who lost their lives serving in World War i. Today, Memorial Park houses facilities for tennis, softball, swimming, track, croquet, volleyball, skating, cycling and a 600-acre municipal golf course that is rated among the nation’s best. Known as Houston’s “Running Mecca,” Memorial Park’s three-mile Seymour Lieberman Exercise Trail is Houston’s most popular running trail that sees almost three million visits annually. Memorial Park is also home to the Houston Arboretum and Nature Center.

Arage made a late race surge and passed early leader Biruktait Degefa before fighting off the challenge of Guteni Imana on the way to a 2:23:23 that was a personal best by almost three minutes. Imana finished at 2:23:32, the third-fastest time ever at Houston and a seven minute improvement on her previous best, and Degefa also dipped under 2:24 with a 2:23:51 that moved her to fifth on the all-time race performance list.

Kellyn Taylor had an impressive debut to place sixth at 2:28:40 as the top American, three minutes ahead of 2014 half marathon champion Serena Burla, who crossed the line at 2:31:46 in seventh.

Gedefa was content to run with the pack for the early part of the race, cruising through the halfway point at 1:03:20. He stayed with the leaders through 30K at 1:31:06 and was six seconds behind Debebe Tolossa with just over four miles to go. Burka made a strong push and pulled away from the pack, opening up a 14-second lead by 40K, but Gedefa fought back and passed Burka in the final 400 meters to win at 2:08:03, a lifetime best and the eighth-fastest time ever at Houston.

Burka’s 2:08:12 made him the ninth-fastest in race history, while Tolossa was third at 2:09:07. Kenya’s Dominic Ondoro was also under 2:10, taking fourth at 2:09:40.

Last year’s half marathon runner-up, Aaron Braun, moved up in distance to great effect, finishing as the top American at 2:12:54 in seventh.

ESTRADA, CONLEY BIG WINNERS IN HALF MARATHON CHAMPIONSHIPS

Two very different races produced two superb results in the Aramco Houston Half Marathon, which served as the U.S. championship race for the ninth time for men and seventh time for women.

Diego Estrada shot to the lead after running with the pack for the first 5K at 14:41, opening a 20-second gap by 10K (28:51) and stretching that margin to 45 seconds over Jared Ward at the 15K mark (43:14). He tacked on five more seconds to his cushion by 20K (57:45) and eased to the finish at 60:51, the third-fastest time ever by an American and also the third-fastest ever at Houston.

Three-time champion Meb Keflezighi was fighting a cold and a sore back as he pursued his fourth U.S. title and third straight, but battled through to take fourth at 62:18.

Last year’s U.S. 10,000 meters champion, Kim Conley, bided her time through 10 miles at a fast pace and was powerful through the finish, crossing the line at 69:44 for the fifth-fastest time ever at Houston and the second-fastest by an American woman in the race. Brianne Nelson trimmed more than two minutes off her lifetime best to take second at 70:16, and Janet Bawcom took third finishing at 70:46.

Near-perfect coNditioNs yielded speedy performaNces at the 43rd chevroN houstoN marathoN as yebrgual arage raN the secoNd fastest time ever by a womaN at houstoN aNd birhaNu gedefa outkicked gebo burka to take the meN’s race. it was the seveNth straight sweep of the titles by ethiopia.

WHy I Run

In her own words, Kjersti is not a particularly talented nor graceful runner, and every year struggles to make it across the finish line in under 6 hours. Truly...she finishes within minutes of the finish line closing (think 5:54ish). Her husband, knows to have the pedicab on standby, since the additional blocks from the finish to the car are more than she can do.

So why does she run? Because every day, as an obstetrician, she takes care of women who cannot. Either they do not have the time or resources, living in neighborhoods that are not safe enough to train in or have no one to help care for their children. Some might once have run, but the years have not been kind and their health burdens are many. So Kjersti runs and thinks of those who wish they could or think they cannot, and she is profoundly thankful that she can still feel the wind in her hair and the sun on her face as she strides through the miles and the years with deep gratitude.

Kjersti Aagaard BellAIRe, TX

Calum lives a fairly normal life with family and work, but balances enough training to be com-petitive on a local, national, and world class level. As Houston’s top local finisher in 2015, he will be back for his third straight Houston Marathon, chasing a top ten finish and the 2:20 mark.

His training includes pushing a double stroller with his 3 year old and 7 month old girls. Some late nights and early mornings. He engages with the community as much as he can at many group/social runs and races.

The 2014 Chevron Houston Marathon was his first official marathon race and after an even more successful race in 2015 it holds a special place in his heart. Follow him on social media to get an insider’s view of the elite experience – twitter and Instagram: @CalNeff

Dendy, like many other busy parents, used to feel guilty taking time to do things for herself. At 35 years old however, she decided to take up running, and she’s never looked back. She is stronger because of running and has no plans of stopping. She represents the average 30-40 year old woman who is busy juggling all areas of her life, but makes running and fitness a priority. It is rarely easy, but it is always worth it. Dendy feels stronger and healthier than she did twenty years ago and knows that she is teaching her daughters to value themselves by making themselves a priority.

Arlen will be running his 37th Houston Marathon and 100th overall marathon at the 2016 Chevron Houston Marathon and pacing the 6:00 finish time. He started the Houston Marathon pace team in 1999 and also currently helps manage the Houston Marathon Committee warehouse as a volunteer. The Houston Marathon Race Weekend of Events is always a special time for him.

The Chevron Houston Marathon has become my go to race because of the amazing support of volunteers and spectators from start to fi nish. It is such an amazing experience to have your name called and strangers cheering as loud as they can for you as you work to set that elusive PR. I love that this race also gives back so much to the community and helps raise money for multiple charities through the run for a reason program. And I love the course. Flat, fast, and packed with spectators from the beginning until the end.

#HOUMARATHON AMBASSADORSThe Ambassador team is made up of dedicated runners who love the Chevron Houston Marathon and Aramco Houston Half Marathon and are involved in the Texas running community, both on the ground and online, spreading their love for H-Town!

The Aramco Houston Half Marathon has become a part of my yearly traditions. I kick off the year with one of the hardest things I will face and it gives me the motivation to face the milestones that lay ahead. It has also inspired me to race around the Country. I hit 1,000 miles while fi nishing the Disney Superhero Half Marathon, another feet I never thought I would accomplish. I have met some amazing friends along the way and made some of the best memories and I will always say, there are very few feelings you can get that can top that feeling of crossing the fi nish line downtown to the cheers of strangers who are there to support you, even though they don‛t know you. It‛s inspiring.

SARAH PEPPERTWITTER - @SARAHHOT757

The Aramco Houston Half Marathon has a very special place in my heart because it was the fi rst half marathon I ran ten years ago. Also, last year I ran my fi rst full marathon and it happened to be the Chevron Houston Marathon. So for those reasons this route through the amazing city of Houston has defi nitely marked my soul. I think it’s the perfect race because it’s a very well organized event with very easy to follow directions, you have an awesome crowd throughout the whole race, water stations every mile and a very big amount of wonderful volunteers that hold your hand along the way. I’m sure I’ll be running many more Houston Half Marathons or Full Marathons for years to come.

I love the Houston Marathon for so many reasons, some tangible and some not. The perfect running weather, fl at course, and huge expo are the obvious, tangible reasons. But it’s the electric atmosphere at the starting line, the amazing crowd support, excellent event organization , and overall sense a commitment to excellence that make the whole event so amazing. When I train hard for months, I want the actual event to be perfect. And that’s what the Chevron Houston Marathon gives me: the setting for a perfect race.

Marathon weekend is something I look forward to literally all year long. From the

pre-race excitement (yes, even those tough training runs) and the expo to crossing the

coveted fi nish line, it’s a fi rst class event. The organization is stellar and even as an

average athlete, I always feel like one of the elite. One of the highlights about the race

itself is the sheer number of spectators and generous volunteers who line the streets of

Houston to cheer and support friends, loved ones, and complete strangers. Bonus? Having

my name on my race bib is incredible because I always feel like a running celebrity

with everyone yelling out my name! In recent years, running Houston has been extra

special because I’ve had the opportunity to share the experience with my dad--everything

from carb loading, pre-race jitters, and BQ celebrations, it’s a pretty special bond.

LINDSAY MCCLELLANDTWITTER - @LINDSAYLM

I love everything about the Chevron Houston Marathon. Over the years I have learned to budget for the expo and take care of most of my running gear for the year. I like to think of it as “Black Friday” for runners, as I quickly fi nd my favorite vendors to stock up. I also love the sense of community amongst runners, meeting old and new friends and discovering some of old friends are runners as well. We all come together with similar missions and we “get” each other. As far as the race is concerned; doing what you set out to do and fi nishing the race is great, but the view of thousands of runners during the fi rst couple of miles always amazes me. Looking forward to this year‛s race and all the good things it brings.

Marcus Lewis TWITTER - @MRLEWIS08

There is really nothing not to love about the Chevron Houston Marathon. The

organization of the race week/expo/marathon/post party are all perfection . The

volunteers are the most kind hearted and enthusiastic volunteers I’ve encoun-

tered in all my marathons, anywhere. The crowd shares their boundless energy,

and sometimes race treats all along the course. The course is fl at enough to go

fast and has enough pretty parts to enjoy if you happen to slow down. Houston

Marathon Day brings together all the best parts of Houston; both with regard to

the attributes of the city itself and the spirit of the people that live here.

The Chevron Houston Marathon is hands-down my favorite race, the one I look forward to every year. I love the Houston Marathon because it is a source of constant inspiration. Each time I train for the marathon, I get to practice persistence and all areas of my life benefi t. I also love the way the city appreciates its runners. The course support is incredible and even when I am walking to my car with my medal on, I am told “Congratulations, I am proud of you.” I’m incredibly honored to be part of such a prestigious, life changing marathon.

CINTIA LISTENBEETWITTER - @SIMPLYCINTIA

I love running my home town marathon . Growing up, my parents had friends

who ran the Houston Marathon , and I couldn’t imagine running that kind of

distance, let alone running, period. 2016 will be my 11th Houston (and 30th

overall) marathon . It seems the world stops on marathon Sunday and The city

of Houston rolls out the red carpet to welcome runners from around the world.

It’s easy to take in the Texas hospitality and it honestly feels like every

spectator is there to cheer you on .

KRISTIN COLLINSTWITTER - @KACMBC

My favorite part about the Houston marathon/half is that there are people to cheer you on all along the route. You never feel like you are running alone without any scenery. It is a race where you can see so much of the city and parts that you maybe haven‛t explored before.

APRIL OCKERMANTWITTER - @INSIGHTSBYAPRIL

The course is my favorite aspect of the Houston marathon. It doesn’t matter if you are running the half or the full, you’ll get the opportunity to see some of the best places Houston has to offer. From coffee shops, restaurants, and shopping, to the best places to run inside the loop, you’ll get to see it all! As a (mostly) native Houstonian and frequenter of many places we run past, it makes me proud to know we get to show off our city in January!

SARA HUDGENSTWITTER - @SARAMHUDGENS

I love the Houston Marathon because it is different than any other race I‛ve ran in. Seeing all your friends, family and fellow competitors on the road is special. It‛s great to run the courses that we train on all year long and experience it with so many others. The Houston Marathon is also special because there is support from the crowd for 26.2 straight miles! It‛s really great to see the whole community come together for such an amazing event.

Over the past decade, the Chevron Houston Marathon Race Weekend of Events has proven to be a breeding ground for the up-and-coming and resurgent distance runners on the international scene. Americans Ryan Hall, Meb Keflezighi and Shalane Flanagan, along with Ethiopians Dire Tune, Deriba Merga, Teyiba Erkesso and Feyisa Lilesa have all won in Houston and gone on to win races such as the Boston Marathon, New York City Marathon or the U.S. Olympic Trials.

“Our elite athlete committee has a great tradition of bringing in professional athletes who are ready to produce really high-quality performances,” said Race Director and President of the Board Brant Kotch. “That ability has never been more evident than over the last six or seven years, when our winners have quickly gone on to win and place highly in Marathon Majors in Boston, Chicago and New York. I know they’re already hard at work on our 2015 field and beyond.”

It started in January of 2007 when Ryan Hall toppled the 21-year-old American record in the men’s half marathon by an astonishing 72 seconds. Crossing the finish line of the Aramco Houston Half Marathon in 59:43, Hall also surpassed German Silva’s North American record of 1:00:28 set back in 1994. In April of that year, he went on to post the fastest American debut marathon in history in placing eighth at the London Marathon (2:08:24). That fall, Hall went on to win the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials - Men’s Marathon in New York City in 2:09:02, breaking the Olympic Trials record in the process. Hall would later become the fastest American ever, under any conditions in the men’s marathon after he finished fourth in the 2011 Boston Marathon in 2:04:55.

Also in 2007, Ethiopian Dire Tune won her first of two Chevron Houston Marathon titles in a course record 2:26:52. She followed that up in 2008 with her second Chevron Houston Marathon title, breaking her own course record by a staggering two minutes, 12 seconds

with her winning time of 2:24:40. In April of that year, in the then-closest finish in the history of the Boston Marathon’s women’s race, Tune outkicked Alevtina Biktimirova in the last 100 yards to win the Boston Marathon by a mere two seconds in 2:25:25.

In 2009, Athens Olympic silver medalist Meb Keflezighi rebounded from an injury-plagued 2008 to win the USA Half Marathon Championships, hosted by the Aramco Houston Half Marathon. Keflezighi took the lead within the first mile of the race and ran to the finish virtually unchallenged to win his first U.S. championship since 2007. That November, he became the first American man in 27 years to win the New York City Marathon. Keflezighi dropped to the ground, tears streaming down his face, when he won in a personal best time of 2:09:15- 41 seconds ahead of Kenya’s Robert Cheruiyot, a four-time winner of the Boston Marathon and one of the most accomplished marathoners in history.

Fast forward three years to the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team Trials - Men’s Marathon. Keflezighi stole the show, biding his time until late in the race and then hanging on in the final miles for the victory in another personal best

- 2:09:08. At 36, he became the oldest man to win the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials. At the 2012 Olympic Games, eight years after his Olympic silver, Keflezighi returned to the Olympic stage and finished fourth in 2:11:06.

Once again, Keflezghi claimed the U.S. Half Marathon men’s crown at the 2014 Aramco Houston Half Marathon in 61:23. Just three months later, he claimed an historic victory in Boston. At 38, he won the 118th Boston Marathon in 2:08:37. He’s the first U.S. winner since Lisa Larsen-Weidenbach took the women’s title in 1985; the last American man to win was Greg Meyer in 1983. He is the oldest person to win the Boston Marathon since 1931.

“I love Houston,” Keflezighi said after his 2014 win. “It’s been a great place for me to compete. The crowd is phenomenal.”

“I love Houston,” Keflezighi said after his 2014 win. “It’s been a great place for me to compete. The crowd is phenomenal.”

Ethiopian Deriba Merga shattered the 20-year-old Chevron Houston Marathon course record by more than two minutes in 2009. After mile 17, Merga ran alone to cross the finish line in 2:07:52, beating the competition by nearly four minutes. Merga went on to win the Boston Marathon that same year in 2:08:42, almost a full minute ahead of the second and third place finishers.

Ethiopian Teyiba Erkesso won back-to-back Chevron Houston Marathon titles in 2009 and 2010. In ‘09, running in her debut marathon, the then-26-year-old Erkesso won in 2:24:18. The following year Erkesso crossed the finish line and set a new course record, shaving 25 seconds off her previous record in a time

The elite fields’ success over the last seven years has led the course records to drop dramatically. They now stand at:

Men’s Marathon: 2:06:51 (2012)

Women’s Marathon: 2:23:14 (2012)

Men’s Half Marathon: 59:22 (2012)

Women’s Half Marathon: 1:08:26 (2012)

of 2:23:53 and crushed her competition by nearly five minutes. Three months later, Erkesso won the 2010 Boston Marathon in a close finish and pushed ahead of her competition by a mere three seconds to win the title in 2:26:11.

Olympic Bronze medalist Shalane Flanagan smashed the course record at the Aramco Houston Half Marathon to win the women’s 2010 USA Half Marathon Championship. Running 1:09:41, Flanagan broke the previous record by one minute, 14 seconds. Running her debut for the distance, Flanagan lived up to her status as pre-race favorite, taking control of the race from the first mile and extending her lead to win the championship by 28 seconds. In November 2010, Flanagan made her marathon debut in New York City where she finished as the runner-up in 2:28:40. It was the best finish by an American woman in the race since Kim Jones finished second in 1990.

A year after running a spectacular 59:22 to win the 2012 Aramco Houston Half Marathon, Ethiopia’s Feyisa Lilesa won the 2013 Aramco Houston Half Marathon in 61:54. In between those two wins, Lilesa became the youngest sub-2:06 marathoner in history after running a 2:04:52 at the 2012 Chicago Marathon to finish second.

SUSAN POORMAN BLACKIE POSTHUMOUSLY INDUCTED INTO HOUSTON MARATHON HALL OF FAME

The Houston Marathon Committee (HMC) elected former HMC and Foundation Board member Susan Poorman Blackie into the Houston Marathon Hall of Fame. Susan was honored by the Houston Marathon Committee on December 10, 2015 at the 2016 Hall of Fame Reception.

In a statement issued by Susan’s husband, Gary Blackie, and family, they said, “This is a poignant tribute to Susan’s passion for and dedication to the Houston Marathon and we are deeply grateful to the HMC. It’s a pleasure to accept this special honor on Susan’s be-half and in her memory. Susan was proud and inspired to play a role in helping the Houston Marathon develop into the world-class event it is today and to work alongside her cherished colleagues to launch the Houston Marathon Foundation. She would be thrilled and hum-bled by this welcome into the Hall of Fame.”

A long-time Houston Marathon Committee (HMC) Board Member and a founding member of the Houston Marathon Foundation (HMF), Susan embodied the generosity and volunteer spirit which exemplifi es the community of peo-ple who make the event possible each year. She was responsible for venue operations at the George R. Brown Convention Center from 1998-2006 and was instrumental in organizing Trials Town and the Opening Ceremony for the 2012 U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials. She was an HMC Board member from 2004 to 2013. In 2007, Susan established the HMF with cur-rent President Maddie Bunch, Treasurer David Chester and Medical Director Dr. John Cianca.

“In the summer of 2004, Susan courageously volunteered to take charge of managing the entire GRB Convention Center when another

longtime volunteer unexpectedly resigned,” said Brant Kotch. “The entire operation that had become her charge was transformed in a positive way almost overnight. From there, it was an obvious choice for our organization to add her to our Board of Directors, where she served with distinction for nine years, always lending a calm and thoughtful voice to big or small decisions. When our Committee won the bid for the 2012 Olympic Trials Marathons, she led our eff ort to introduce an opening ceremony to the weekend’s schedule, some-thing that had never been attempted before in an already groundbreaking event that incorporated both men’s and women’s races. Again, her eff orts were effi cient and her accomplishment magnifi cent.”

“Susan was diagnosed with the disease that would ultimately claim her life. For those two last years, she fought a remarkable personal battle but even more importantly, she fought a remarkable public battle by creating a foundation (the Susan Poorman Blackie Ovarian Cancer Foundation) to help others fi ght their own battle,” said Kotch. “The en-ergy, the care and compassion, and the wis-dom that she exhibited in that last challenge and throughout our Committee’s experience with her is sorely, sorely missed.”

Susan passed away on July 4, 2014 at the age of 64 and is survived by her husband Gary Blackie, son Buck Dodson and daughter Mindy White. She will be greatly missed but her legacy will continue on with the creation of an annual college scholarship in her name. Susan, who was born in Kingsville and raised in Bishop, embodied the leadership, gener-osity and volunteer spirit that exemplifi es the Houston Marathon community of volunteers.

Hundreds of thousands of runners have participated in the Houston Marathon since its inception in 1972, and many of those runners continue to come back year after year. To honor these dedicated runners, the Houston Marathon Committee created the Houston Marathon Legacy Runners Club - an exclusive group of runners who have completed ten or more Houston marathons or Houston half marathons in it’ 42-year history.

Today there are more than 500 active Houston Marathon Legacy Runners and more than 140 are “streakers” – runners who have completed consecutive Houston Marathons.

Finishes do not have to be consecutive, but all fi nishes must be in the Houston marathon or half marathon event exclusively.

OFFICIAL 2015-2016RUN FOR A REASON CHARITIESRUN FOR A REASON CHARITIES

Crossing the finish line of the Chevron Houston Marathon, Aramco Houston Half Marathon or ABB 5K is a well-deserved reward for the hard work runners endure while training for their race. By participating in the Run for a Reason charity program, that hard work does more than get runners to the finish line; it offers help and hope to the thousands of people who benefit from the charities in the program.

Linking runners with 61 offi cial charities, the Run for a Reason program provides an avenue for race participants, individuals and organizations to collect donations on behalf of an offi cial charity. In addition, the program off ers a platform for charities to raise awareness and educate about their important cause.

Last year, the Run for a Reason program raised $2.5 million for 60 local charities, and to-date has surpassed $23 million raised for local nonprofi ts since its inception in 1995. Prizes are awarded to the top fundraisers based on total number of dollars raised.

For additional information about the Run for a Reason charity program, visit RunforaReasonHouston.org.

CHEVRON HOUSTON MARATHONHONORED WITH 2015 AIMS GREEN AWARD

The Association of International Marathon and Distance Races (AIMS), a leading world-wide running organization, award the Chevron Houston Marathon with the 2015 AIMS Green Award.

Candidates for the AIMS Green Award were judged upon a number of criteria, including the impact the race has had on promoting environmentally friendly practices in marathon events, how volunteers contribute to the success of the proj-ect and the ability for the race to educate younger generations about the benefi ts of sport and environmental protection. The two other shortlisted races were the Mexican race Maratón de la Ciudad de Mexico and the Xiamen International Marathon in China.

The Chevron Houston Marathon was recognized for year round eff orts towards “Going Green.” The Chevron Houston Marathon closely follows the Council for Responsible Sport’s certifi cation standards. These eff orts include a senior manager overseeing all sustainability goals and a “Green Committee” formed to work towards attaining them.

The Chevron Houston Marathon became the fi rst organization to earn dual certifi cation from the Council for Responsible Sport for separate events conducted on consecutive days (2012 U.S. Olympic Trials Marathon; 2012 Chevron Houston Marathon). After earning Silver Level Certifi cation in 2012, the Chevron Houston Marathon earned Gold in 2013-14 and are now recertifi ed at the Gold level for 2015-16.

In an eff ort to tackle CO2 emissions, the Chevron Houston Marathon calculated the carbon footprint of a number of race elements for the fi rst time in 2015 and will use this as a target to lower for future events. Eff orts for 2016 are already underway with race medals and t-shirts not being packaged individually, choosing host hotels within walking distance of race elements, ensuring all catering use recyclable materials and choosing a route designed to encompass 100% urban areas with no green space aff ected by runners or spectators.

In 2015, the Chevron Houston Marathon made big strides in re-ducing the waste created by the event. A “double sort” process was implemented to effi ciently sort waste. In addition, all runner and volunteer registration was done online and all signage was created with no date to be re-used year after year. These eff orts led to 76% of waste being diverted from landfi ll.

The Houston Marathon Foundation (HMF) is providing $90,000 in support towards local running programs and youth initiatives across the Greater Houston Region. Since its inception in 2008, the HMF has provided over $800,000 in funding for local youth initiatives, health and wellness programs, national elite runners and community enhancement projects in Houston.

This year, the Foundation is supporting Students Run Houston, Katy Students Run, Girls on the Run Greater Houston, Bel Inizio, the Houston Wellness Project, the Brookwood Community and race participants with special needs.

“Supporting the local running community and creating opportunities for new runners in the Greater Houston Region is a primary goal of the Houston Marathon Foundation,” said Wade Morehead, Executive Director of the Houston Marathon Foundation and Committee. “We are excited to work with these wonderful organizations again this year, helping students and adults train for their fi rst running event and supporting local groups who promote the benefi ts of running as part of a healthy lifestyle.”

The Students Run Houston initiative will provide over 300 race entries, tech shirts, coaching stipends and transportation for students participating in after-school running programs with Katy Students Run (Morton Ranch High School, Katy High School and Katy Taylor High School) and HISD schools (Chavez High School, Sharpstown High School, Hamilton Middle School, Spring Woods Middle School and Ortiz Middle School). This program will allow students to have a safe after school environment, build self-esteem, set long- and short-term goals, and help them train to cross the fi nish line. All of these students will be participating in the Aramco Houston Half Marathon or the ABB 5K on race weekend, January 16-17, 2016.

Girls on the Run Greater Houston is a non-profi t program that works to encourage pre-teen girls to develop self-respect and healthy lifestyles through dynamic, interactive lessons and running games, culminating in a celebratory 5k race. The organization’s curricula seeks to address all aspects of the girls’ development to enhance their physical, emotional, mental, social, and spiritual well-being, while establishing a lifetime appreciation of health and fi tness. It also aff ords area runners who could not aff ord to participate with an opportunity to participate in the program and run with their peers.

Bel Inizio helps disadvantaged women develop self-confidence and life skills through fitness and nutrition. Participants train to complete a 5K, which helps prepare them for the ultimate race – the race for a better life. While

training, these women learn about commitment, fitness, and nutrition, while also learning how to succeed independently and to build self-esteem.

The Houston Wellness Project is a nonprofit organization that strives to empower all individuals to make positive healthy lifestyle choices by providing accessible wellness education and programming. They offer a free monthly 5K in the heights and George Bush Park and are a recent recipient of the Houston Press “best health and wellness enterprise.” In 2016, they will be adding two new sites to their free runs – Pearland and San Jacinto.

The HMF, as part of their special needs initiative, will support the Brookwood Community with the Cross Country Championships Run, which is conducted to promote awareness of the campus and fundraise for the development of a campus running trail. Brookwood provides meaning and

purpose for adults with disabilities. The Brookwood Citizens have full-time jobs in various enterprises that provide revenue to support their community.

Additionally, the HMF will provide free entry fees for Duo Team wheelchair captains and for guides who assist runners participating in the visually impaired division at the 2016 Chevron Houston Marathon Race Weekend of Events.

In addition to the numerous U.S. elite distance running programs supported by the HMF and funding provided to create opportunities for new runners in the Greater Houston Region and also to support the vibrant local running community, the HMF also distributes the Susan Poorman Blackie Scholarship annually and partners with Texas Children’s Hospital to put on an annual Family Fun Run on the Katy Campus (April 11, 2016). An announcement outlining these two HMF initiatives will be released later this year.

You should arrive early, by 5:30 a.m., to drop off your official clear Gear Check bag at Gear Check in Hall D and head to your starting corral. Look for signs directing you to your assigned corral as you exit the GRB. Seed yourself according to the pace signs in your corral.

PORT-A-CANS: There are more than 200 port-a-cans located in Hall A of the GRB. Port-a-cans are also inside each start corral at all pace intervals and throughout the race course.

MOBILE DEVICES: On race day, the use of mobile devices for photography and social updates is strongly discouraged. The use of selfie sticks is prohibited for your safety and the safety of those around you. Do not stop to take photographs on the race course.

RUNNING ETIQUETTE: Be considerate of those around you. Do not run in groups of more than three abreast. Do

not stop abruptly at aid stations or to tie your shoe or for any reason without being aware of your surroundings. If wearing headphones, make sure you can hear what is going on around you and be aware that emergency vehicles may be on the course at any time.

SAFETY: If you see a runner in distress, offer assistance and alert the nearest race official. If the situation appears to be urgent, call 911. Visit our website to learn about Hands Only CPR and how you can help save a life.

SEE SOMETHING, SAY SOMETHING: If you see suspicious behavior, make the call. Notify a race official, uniformed official or call 911.
