I’m ecstatic to say I am writing this letter from our office in the new Dave Ward Building, Crime Stoppers of Houston, a milestone that is due to the many donors, partners, board members, staff, and volunteers who believe in the work of Crime Stoppers. This historic facility is significant on so many levels, including being named after Houston media icon and Guinness World Record Holder, Dave Ward.

In entering this campaign, I expected to speak solely about bricks and mortar, but quickly discovered that the majority of my conversations were explaining what Crime Stoppers does and our plan for the future.

I wanted to take this opportunity to share some of those key points with you:

• Tip Line: Alongside law enforcement, Crime Stoppers’ Tip Line has helped solve over 33,600 felony cases and arrest over 25,600 felony fugitives. Working with the community, we have solved an incredible range of cases, a recent one being the horrific killing of 4-year-old Ava Castillo.

• The Community: In 2016, our Safe Community Program educated nearly 6 million Houstonians on everything related to public safety with a focus on human trafficking, domestic violence, child abuse, animal abuse, cyber safety, home safety and more.

• Students: Reaching students from Pre-K to 12th grade in over 28 Greater Houston school districts, with classroom style presentations, our Safe School Program is directly responsible for solving almost 2,000 school cases and removing almost 300 weapons from our children’s schools. Built within the program is critical education focused on respecting law enforcement. This program just celebrated reaching its 1,000,000th student.

• Protecting Law Enforcement: Over the last ten years specifically, we have solved over 150 felony crimes against law enforcement including 7 police officer killings – including the cases of fallen Officer Darren Goforth and the horrific shooting of Officer Ann Carrizales.

During a time of great distress in our city, state and country, Crime Stoppers is focused on solutions. We have been here for 37 years, doing everything we can to make Houston a safer place. Our sincerest thanks go to so many of you who have joined our mission and believed in our cause!

Our best wishes,

Rania MankariousExecutive Director

MEDIA IMPACT

Over the years, support from local and national media partners have

allowed Crime Stoppers of Houston to further its community reach,

increase its crime prevention message, thwart criminal activity and

create a safer community for all. 2016 was no exception – in fact,

support through television, radio, online, print publications, online

and digital media played a key role in helping solving and prevent

serious crime throughout the Greater Houston Area.

HIGHLIGHTS FOR 2016

TIP LINE: 500+ unsolved felony cases were featured by our media partners, Crime Stoppers’ Tip Line led to the solving of 545 felony cases.

NEW WEBSITE: Redesigned and launched a new website to help better serve the needs of our community – www.crime-stoppers.org saw a 53% increase in page views meaning more Houstonians actively searching for crime prevention information.

SAFE SCHOOL PROGRAM

The Safe School Program has been keeping schools safe since 1997 by

providing students with a safe and anonymous way to report crime and

potential dangers on campus and in the community. In addition to the

Tip Line, safety presentations are offered to students with an underlining

message of good citizenship and keeping themselves safe. Training is

available to school staff and school-based law enforcement officers to

assist in keeping students and schools safe. Parents are also presented

with tools and tips for keeping their children safe. The Safe School

Program has educated over 1 million students from PK-12th grade in

28 Greater Houston Area school districts, including private and charter

schools, and satisfies state and federal mandates.

SAFE COMMUNITY PROGRAM: Free monthly public education through events, presentations, media engagements and social media helped disseminate safety information to over 6 million citizens spanning over 1,700 sq. miles of Houston / Harris County.

SAFE SCHOOL PROGRAM: Free school programming saw a significant increase to outreach due in large part to phenomenal media support from partners like KPRC Anchor and Crime Stoppers Safety Sidekick Jennifer Reyna, The Buzz Magazines, and 104.1 KBRE Roula and Ryan Morning Show and Around H-town with Freddy Cruz.

Crime Stoppers is proud to announce that we have completed construction on the first-ever Crime Stoppers building anywhere in the world! The new 28,000 square foot facility is named The Dave Ward Building Crime Stoppers of Houston, in honor of Dave Ward, ABC-13 for his commitment and involvement since the organization’s inception in the early 1980s. The facility houses a community center where citizens, non-profits, students and faculty, law enforcement agencies and community partners will convene for educational purposes; a victim’s family room for controlled media interviews and law enforcement case meetings; a state-of-the-art press conference room; expanded program offices that deliver direct crime prevention services to the community; and a greatly expanded Law Enforcement Detail Office to house our Tip Line Program. Thanks to a strong public – private collaboration, the completion of this public safety hub in the heart of Midtown means a safer place to live, work, learn and play for all Houstonians.

We are pleased that in addition to the historic construction of our facility, the grounds will also add to the beautification and revitalization of Midtown with the inclusion of the first Harris County Sheriff’s Officers Memorial, a garden that will honor deputies who have paid the ultimate sacrifice. The groundbreaking on the Memorial Garden will be spring of 2017.
