2016 Federal & State Amend Instructions for the TurboTax Online product:

1) To open your 2016 return, go to https://turbotax.intuit.com and sign in.

2) On the Sign In screen, enter your User ID and Password and select Sign In.

3) On the Welcome home screen, select My TurboTax and then choose My Tax Timeline from the

dropdown list.

4) On the Tax Timeline screen, select Amend (change) return.

5) On the ‘Are you sure you’d like to amend your return?’ screen, select Amend using TurboTax

Online.

Start to Amend Your Return:

1) On the We’ll Help you change (amend) your return screen, click Continue.

2) On the ‘Have You Already Filed This Return?’ screen, select Yes, I need to amend a return I

already filed and then select I was contacted by TurboTax and told I may need to amend.

Select Continue, when done.

3) If you see the screen ‘Tell Us Which Returns You Want To Amend’ choose I want to

amend both my federal and state returns and then choose Continue. If you do not

get this screen, skip to #4.

4) On the ‘Do you still receive your mail at this address?’ screen make a choice and

choose Continue.

5) On the ‘Presidential Election Campaign Fund’ screen, make a selection and then

choose Continue.

6) On the ‘Why did you need to amend your return?’ screen, indicate “The mortgage interest

deduction reported on Schedule A of the original return was not adjusted for IRS limitations.

This amended return shows the correct deduction.” Then select Continue.

7) On the ‘Let’s comb through your returns one last time with completecheck’ screen

choose the Federal Taxes tab.

8) On the ‘Your Income’ screen, choose Deductions & Credits.

9) On the screen showing ‘Your tax breaks’ choose Edit/Add next to Mortgage Interest,

Refinancing, and Insurance (Form 1098).

10) On the Mortgage Deduction Summary screen, choose Done.

11) On the Mortgage interest and points limitation screen, choose Yes.

12) On the Enter your mortgage interest and points calculation screen, enter the amount of the

actual mortgage interest deduction that you are allowed to deduct. Then, choose Continue.

Note: TurboTax does not calculate this amount for you. If you need help determining the

amount to enter, please refer to IRS Publication 936: https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-

pdf/p936.pdf.

13) On the ‘Your tax breaks’ screen, choose Wrap up tax breaks.

14) On the ‘Double checking for every possible tax break’ screen, select Continue.

15) If you see the screen ‘We’ve Chosen Itemized Deductions for You’, choose Continue. If you

don’t see this screen skip to #16.

16) On the ‘Let’s check for any uncommon tax situations’ screen, scroll to the bottom and

choose Revisit next to Amend a Return.

17) You will see the screen ‘Do you still receive your mail at this address?’ again. Make a

selection and choose Continue.

18) You will see the ‘Presidential Election Campaign Fund’ screen again. Make a selection and

choose Continue.

19) On the ‘Why did you need to amend your return screen?’ choose Continue.

20) On the ‘Let’s comb through your return one last time with completecheck’ screen, select

Check my info.

21) On the ‘You’re just about ready to file. But first…’ screen, select Continue.

22) On the Let’s take care of these details now screen, select Review

23) On the screen, ‘Here are the results of our final review’ choose Fix Federal Return. Note: You

may see an option to fix your state return. We will come back to that after we fix the federal

return.

24) On the Amended Returns Can’t Be E-Filed screen, select Continue.

25) On the Let’s take care of these details now screen, select Review.

26) On the screen, ‘Here are the results of our final review’ choose the option to Fix Your State

Return and fix any errors. You may see a message indicating that your state return cannot be

e-filed. You can choose Continue at that message. If you do not have a state return, choose

Continue without Fixing.

27) On the Let’s take care of these details now screen, select Continue.

28) On the We still have a couple of details to button up screen select Continue.

29) On the ‘Your Amended Return Summary’ screen, select Continue.

30) You are now ready to print your return to file. On the ‘You’re Done! Print and Mail Your

Returns’ screen, select Print Return.

31) On the Print Preview screen, select the Printer Icon to print your forms.

32) After printing your return, review the Filing Instructions for your federal and state return (if

applicable). The filing instructions will indicate any balance due and the address to mail your

return. Remember to print out an extra copy to keep for your record.
