Our church is named for Holy Wisdom. In the

ancient Church, Christ was referred to as Sofia

(“wisdom”) as well as Logos (“Word”). The Holy

Trinity was also understood as Holy Wisdom,

because the mystery of the Trinity is beyond our

ability to understand. The icon for our parish is

therefore the icon of the Holy Trinity.

The Bible relates that King Solomon, the son of the

Prophet and King David, prayed for the gift of

wisdom and became the wisest man in all the Earth.

Along with other books, he shared some of this

wisdom in the books of Proverbs and the Wisdom

of Solomon. In Proverbs, he taught that “the fear of

the LORD is the beginning of wisdom” (Proverbs

1:7). Here he is quoting his father, the Prophet

David (Psalm 111:10).

If we fear God, we are wise, but if we worry more

about the opinion of others more than we fear God,

we are foolish. The wisdom of God is far beyond

our own wisdom, as the Prophet Isaiah reminds us:

“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are

your ways my ways, says the Lord” (Isaiah 55:9).

Therefore, Solomon writes, we should “Trust in the

LORD with all your heart, and do not rely on your

own insight” (Proverbs 3:5).

Wisdom is therefore not the same as being clever.

Wisdom is seeking the will of God; cleverness is

trying to figure out how to get our own way.

Sometimes, clever people appear to be more

successful than faithful people. Jesus referred to this

when he said, “the children of this world are more

clever in their own generation than the children of

light” (Luke 16:8). Cleverness involves scheming for

ways to obtain power or to cause other people to do

what we want them to do. Wisdom is just the opposite:

it means desiring the salvation and healing of

mankind, especially keeping in mind those who are

powerless and helpless. It means obedience to God

rather than copying the ways of the world.

In the Beatitudes (Matthew 5:1-12) Jesus reminds us

that those who are wise are also meek, and for that

reason they do not look very clever to worldly people.

It does not occur to the meek to scheme, plot or coerce

anyone. They do not waste time trying to find ways to

force their will on others. Instead, they naively and

cheerfully go about doing the work of the Kingdom of

God. In the face of organized cleverness they look

foolish. They easily lose political struggles. But in this

they are sharing the way of the cross, which is the path

which Christ has given his followers. Jesus did not

instruct his Apostles to outsmart the opposition, but to

heal and to cast out demons in His name, declaring the

Good News of the Kingdom of God which has

brought light into a dark world.

The first step to obtaining Wisdom is therefore

repentance. All of us make mistakes. However, clever

people do not like to admit mistakes, because then

they would not look like they were very clever. They

pretend that they are always right, and they blame

others for anything that seems to go wrong. Wise

people, on the other hand, learn from their mistakes,

and by submitting to the will and judgment of God

they become better people.

Putting wisdom into practice in a church means

always seeking the will of God and doing our best to

carry it out. Wisdom means practicing sound

stewardship. This does not mean simply giving money

to the church, but rather, seeing to it that the money

we give actually goes towards carrying out the

ministries and pastoral care which Christ has called us

to do. Any other use of our money is simply not wise.

On this point we do well to remember the proverb

quoted by Jesus, that “Wisdom is justified by all her

children” (Luke 7:35). In other words, if what we do is

wise, good results will soon be obvious; whereas if

what we do is not wise, it results in wasting our

resources and our time, and can be destructive to our

own lives and the lives of others.

In this 90th year of the St. Sophia parish, it is a good

time to re-commit ourselves to Holy Wisdom. A wise

use of our resources is critical for the survival of the

parish. We need to examine our stewardship—not

simply the resources we give, but where these

resources are going. Where our decisions are not

bearing fruit, we need to start over. Wise decisions

result in the fruit of the Spirit and the equipping of the

saints for real ministry (see Ephesians 4:11-16). The

most beautiful result of true wisdom is love within a

congregation: love for God, and love for one another.

In Him, +Fr. Brendan

STEWARDSHIP

We are happy to remind everyone that donations can be made online at www.stsophiagoc.org by clicking on

the "donations" tab at the top of the page; and you can access the 2016 Stewardship Packet Information

through the link on the right side of the web page.

• Our goal this year is 300 stewards, a significant increase from previous years, but still well short of the

total number of parishioners on our mailing list. We feel that this is an achievable goal, and one that will

put us on track to sustaining the church’s operating budget through stewardship.

• We have 86 stewards for 2016 and pledges amounting to $84,791, compared to our goal of 300

stewards and $310,252.00 in pledges.

• We continue to pray for unity and love as we move forward in sustaining and expanding His Church.

SUNDAY SCHOOL NEWS

Happy Valentine’s Day!

It’s hard to believe that the first month of our new year is over!

Our January meeting was a success in that we reviewed and approved our budget for the remaining year,

Thank you to all those members who made a special effort to attend so that we would have a quorum. The

remainder of the year looks to be a busy and fruitful one. Some of the upcoming events are our Pascha Bake

Sale, the District Convention and our Annual Rummage Sale.

For those members who have not sent in their 2016 dues, please do so. Dues may be mailed to the church of-

fice and please annotate “2016 Dues” on the memo line. Dues for this year are $47.00. If you have not paid

your 2015 dues, you may do so, but at the new rate. Any questions, please contact me.

We had a great time at our joint holiday dinner with our brother AHEPANS on January 16th at Tilo’s Mexican

restaurant. I hope all who were able to attend truly enjoyed themselves.

Our February meeting will be held on Valentine’s Day, after Liturgy in Founder’s Hall. Light refreshments

will be served and we welcome any ladies of the community, (you do not have to be Orthodox), who would

like to learn more about the Daughters of Penelope. Some of you have been to our joint socials with the

AHEPANS, so please come visit with us in February.

Looking forward to very busy Spring!

On February 7, 2016, the Sunday School will hold its annual St. Chrysostom Oratorical Festival and Jonathan Dolan

Memorial Luncheon. The elementary classes will do drawings for display. Children in the 4th—6th grade may

also choose to speak about their drawing of either their name day saint or another saint. Students in grades 7—9 and

10—12 (junior, senior divisions) have a choice of topics selected by the Educational Department of the Archdiocese.

Judges will select one junior and one senior division student to represent St. Sophia at the Metropolis Festival. The

Sunday School teachers encourage all our youth to participate in the festival. We ask that you likewise encourage

participation. Each year we adults have gained something from the thoughts and insights of our youth - our tomorrow

and we want to continue to share their beautiful thoughts and words. Please attend the Oratorical Festival.

The Metropolis of Denver Oratorical Festival will be hosted by Sts. Peter & Paul parish in Boulder, Colorado on the

weekend of April 8 through 10, 2016.

Our Sunday Church School classes will once again participate in the procession with Icons on the first Sunday of Great

Lent—The Sunday of Orthodoxy on March 20, 2016.

We hope to see the SCS families participate in the Lenten Service once again this year.

What to Do about Taxes

Normally, churches in this country are not taxed because churches do not produce revenue. In theory, at least, Christian churches use all income for the purpose of holding worship services for their mem-bers, and for assisting the poor.

In the case of St Sophia, the purchase of property several years ago without building on it quickly for the use of regular worship, subjected the church to ongoing taxes. These will increase each year until a worship center is built and is being used by a congregation.

Some members have stated that these taxes could be alleviated if we only held short prayer-services on the property every week. Actually some of the tax has already been forgiven for that purpose, but this percentage amount seems unlikely to rise. Zoning laws also prohibit any kind of temporary structure for worship.

Experienced priests know that it is unwise for churches to purchase land until sufficient funds have already been raised or pledged to cover the cost of the initial building or buildings. Also, it is always necessary to raise much more money than the projected building costs, because building costs always rise during the building process. A comfortable margin would be to raise twice as much money as we expect to spend on the first building.

In our case, even if we commit to build only a fellowship hall first (in which worship would be held until the next building could be built), we would have to raise about $2 million. In addition, our situation is different from that of some of the other Orthodox churches in Texas because we have to pay for upkeep of the present building during the process of raising money for the new mission. His Eminence has made it clear that we are not going to sell the existing church.

As your priest, I am responsible to oversee the process of raising funds and of keeping the parish solvent. At this time, it is clear that we are not solvent, because available funds will be depleted within weeks. If this happens, then neither the present church nor the new land will be usable. This fact needs to be considered very carefully by the entire congregation, because we could both lose a priest and fail to pay the taxes on the land.

Since a majority of those present at the last meeting voted to continue paying taxes from our operating budget, it is imperative for all those who want to see this project through to raise the necessary funds as quickly as possible both for the land itself and for building on that land. I will work with the parish council to set up committees to determine how much money will be needed for initial contractors, apart from retiring the mortgage and paying taxes; and to conduct fund drives not tied to the church’s budget to raise these funds.

Conversely, it is also clear that many of our families do not want to fund a mission church but intend to stay at the present St. Sophia. I will therefore recommend to His Eminence and to the parish that separate fund drives be conducted for the renovation and use of the present church, so that those who ultimately wish to stay in the present building may do so without fear that their donations will be used to build a different site.

A third option, which His Eminence has already suggested, is to sell the mortgaged property for a profit in order to fund both new land and a new building. I see however that many of our members also resist selling the land. If a majority do not wish to follow this direction, then the only option is for all those who voted for the present budget and who made the proposals that purchased this land in the past, to raise the necessary funds in the next few months. This can be done in many ways, through intentional fund drives, events and publicity.

Finally, I remain convinced that our beautiful congregation can carry out both objectives: of remaining at St. Sophia and watching the congregation grow where we are, as well as building a new mission on the new property. We can do this without any division, because our unity lies in doing the will of God. May God grant us the unity and determination to serve our Lord in bigger ways, in this beautiful city.

+Fr Brendan

AHEPA UPDATE

We started 2016 with a good turnout for our first meeting of the year and more importantly,

we welcomed our newest members;

Oscar Carrisalez and Demetrios Tingas

to our AHEPA Family.

Afterwards, we enjoyed some fellowship and some delicious food, compliments of Maria and Ralph

LaRochelle.

Our annual AHEPA/DOP Holiday Dinner Party, at Tilo’s Mexican Restaurant was another fun event.

Don’t forget, we will be hosting the Oratorical Festival/Jonathon Dolan Memorial Fund Luncheon on Sunday,

February 7 - - mark your calendars now so you don’t miss this event. We will need some Ahepans to help

with setting up Mangos Hall on Saturday morning.

As a reminder, we have started collecting 2016 chapter dues ($50.00). Remember our goal is to be 100%

collected by June. So please pay your dues soon.

Next Meeting will be Monday, February 8, 7pm. Place to be determined.

God Bless, Costas

What is Christian Stewardship?

Christian Stewardship is…

…learning how to be a responsible and concerned caretaker of Christ’s Church; it is learning how to enjoy Church life and be happy in Church work, for in Her dwells the fullness of the Spirit of God.

…our active commitment to use all our time, talent and treasure for the benefit of humankind in grateful ac-knowledgment of Christ’s redeeming love.

…caring for the needs of others.

…offering one’s self to God as He offered Himself to us.

…what a person does after saying “I believe…”, as proof of that belief.

…devotion and service to God and His Church as persons, as families, as diocese/metropolis, as national Church and as Church universal. Williams & McKibben in Oriented Leadership

Jesus Is concerned about the 5,000 men plus women and children that are with him in the wilderness. His

disciples tell him that all they have are five loaves and two small fish that a boy has offered. Jesus’ response is

the phrase, “Bring them to me.” Jesus then takes the loaves, blesses and breaks them, and feeds 5,000 men

plus women and children.

We also bring what we have to Jesus. We offer bread and wine. He returns it to us as His body and blood in

Holy Communion. We offer ourselves and we become the Church, His body on earth. No matter how much

we give, He cannot be outdone. Just like the boy who offered the loaves and the fish, if we offer what we have

— however great or small our gift — with prayer and humility, God will receive our gifts and multiply them

to feed His people.
