The Standard is an insurance and financial services company founded in Portland, Oregon, in 1906, by a man named Leo Samuel. Leo arrived in New York in 1860, a penniless 13-year-old immigrant with a dream of a better life. Forty-six years later, he was a pillar of the Portland community, already famous for his civic spirit, his rose garden (which is where, it is believed, the City of Roses nickname originated) and his keen business sense. He founded Oregon Life Insurance Company to better serve local customers and to maximize economic benefits for the community he loved so much.

Here we are 111 years later and that tradition of taking care of our customers and communities is more important than ever to the employees of The Standard. In 2016 our giving reached new heights, raising a record-breaking $4.2 million for more than 1,500 schools and nonprofits during our annual Employee Giving Campaign. Keep reading to learn more about the results of our most recent EGC — the signature philanthropic event held annually at our company — when employee donations are matched dollar for dollar.

The record level of giving was shaped by another milestone event in the already impressive story of The Standard. In 2016, our company became part of the international family of companies of Meiji Yasuda, a 137-year-old life insurance company based in Tokyo, Japan. Our two companies share very similar cultures and histories, especially when it comes to our commitment

to our communities, which is why leaders at Meiji Yasuda generously decided to also match employee donations during the EGC. That effectively tripled every donation made by those who work at The Standard.

And the great news is that Meiji Yasuda has already agreed to support the EGC by again matching donations in 2017.

Financial donations aren’t the only ways our employees get involved and give back. People who choose to work at The Standard also tend to donate their time, energy and expertise supporting community partners through volunteerism. From company Day of Caring events to serving on nonprofit boards, our employees logged tens of thousands of volunteer hours last year.

Special recognition is given to the four recipients of our Leo Award — named after our founder, Mr. Samuel — which recognizes employee volunteers who exemplify his focus on civic responsibility. In 2016, four extraordinary employees — Patrick Cabe, Darlene Gallinger-Long, Mary Gordon and Brent Snyder — each received a Leo Award that includes a cash award for themselves and a donation from The Standard to their favorite charity for their contributions to the greater good in the places we live and work. You can read more about the nonprofits they support in this report.

We’re proud of their accomplishments, and proud of the difference all our employees make for our customers and our communities. I like to think that at our company, we all work together to reach new heights for our communities every year. There is no doubt that 2016 was a remarkable year at The Standard, but we have pretty high hopes for 2017 as well. Thanks for your interest in our company and our philanthropic activities.

Reaching new heights, but never forgetting our rootsOregon Life Insurance Company, the company that would become The Standard, was founded in 1906 in Portland, Oregon. Our founder, Leo Samuel, had two radical — at least for the time — ideas for the business: it should provide local service for local customers and it should contribute to the well-being of the community. Our company has grown considerably since those early days — we have offices around the country, and we are part of the international family of Meiji Yasuda businesses. Our dual focus on exceptional customer service and supporting the places we live and work continues to guide The Standard today.

At The Standard, our business purpose is to help people achieve financial well-being and peace of mind. We do that by offering a range of strong products

The Standard: We’re in the business of caring about people

and services including employee benefits — group insurance and retirement plans — as well as individual disability insurance, individual annuities and commercial mortgages. More than six million people and some 30,000 employers rely on The Standard.

Unlike industries with tangible products, this focus means our company exists to help people. Our more than 3,000 employees — the majority located in the Portland metro area — are part of a culture of caring. Not surprisingly, our employees place a high value on giving back, partnering with the company to find ways to make a difference and support our communities.

Our legacy of giving is grounded in a partnership between employees and the companyThe Standard has a well-deserved reputation for putting people first — it’s at the heart of our business of caring for and supporting customers who are often facing a serious life event. That sentiment also drives our commitment to our communities. Here are just a few of the ways The Standard and our employees partner to create opportunities and deliver results:

Paid time off for volunteeringThe Standard provides employees with paid time off annually to volunteer. Many employees use those hours, and more, to support community partners such as schools, Meals on Wheels, literacy programs and many other worthy groups. In 2016, employees of The Standard volunteered tens of thousands of hours supporting their favorite nonprofit organizations.

Day of Caring events The company hosts Day of Caring volunteer events to focus even more support on community partners such as Forest Park Conservancy, Trillium Family Services, Oregon Food Bank and other organizations working to strengthen our communities.

Five Days, Many WaysNew in 2016! In celebration of our partnership with Meiji Yasuda and our continued commitment to the places where we live and work, The Standard introduced its first-ever Week of Caring — Five Days, Many Ways. Organizers coordinated volunteer projects with more than 15 nonprofits during the week of April 18 – 22. More than 330 employee volunteers collectively gave 1,000 hours’ worth of their time and talents. Volunteers planted trees, cleaned and repaired children’s books, created STEM kits, transformed a day center for adults and much more.

Jeans Days Program Now in its 12th year, the Jeans Days program allows employees to wear jeans on Thursdays and Fridays in exchange for a $100 donation to a nonprofit partner. In 2016, employee donations were matched dollar for dollar by The Standard and Meiji Yasuda, and we raised more than $530,000 that went to five great nonprofits: Portland State University’s Student Success Fund, Ronald McDonald House Charities of Oregon and Southwest

Washington, Dragonfly Foundation, Burke Rehabilitation Center and Altavista Area/Campbell County Habitat for Humanity.

Dollars for Doers Our Dollars for Doers program, established in 1985, encourages employees to become grantmakers, requesting philanthropic support from The Standard for the organizations at which they volunteer. Last year 18 employees requested and received grants for their favorite nonprofits.

Nonprofit board trainingThe Standard expects officers of the company to serve on at least one school or nonprofit board of directors and offers board training for all interested employees. In 2016, dozens of employees took advantage of our annual board training and more than 70 of our senior employees currently serve on nonprofit boards.

Employee resource groupsMany of our employees choose to give back by joining company-sponsored employee resource groups. These groups are made up of like-minded people who want to make a difference in specific areas that benefit our company, the community and, in some cases, the entire planet.

Volunteer Expos Each September, The Standard hosts Volunteer Expos in Portland (Oregon’s largest) and in Cincinnati, Ohio. These expos help connect employees and the public with the local volunteer opportunities that match their interests and expertise. Last year more than 150 nonprofit organizations participated in our expos and hundreds of employees visited and volunteered at the events, helping connect members of the public with hundreds of local nonprofits.

Employee Giving Campaign Our companywide giving event matches employee contributions, dollar for dollar, up to $5,000 per person, to any eligible 501(c)(3) or academic organization. There are also picnics, games, bake sales and even an online auction to help raise funds, build awareness about the campaign and celebrate our culture of caring. In 2016, 70 percent of our employees in offices across the U.S. participated, pledging $1.5 million to 1,500 nonprofits. After the dollar-for-dollar matches from The Standard and Meiji Yasuda, $4.2 million is being distributed to our community partners throughout 2017.

In 2008, The Standard established the Leo Award program in honor of our founder, Leo Samuel. Each year, the company recognizes four employee volunteers — nominated by their peers and determined by popular vote — who exemplify the community spirit of Leo Samuel. Winners receive a cash award for themselves and a cash donation to their nonprofit from The Standard. The program provides increased visibility for nonprofit organizations along with well-deserved recognition for the many employee volunteers who devote countless time and energy to these organizations.

In 2016, we honored these four exceptional employee volunteers:

Desire to serve leads to saving lives.Patrick Cabe always wanted to be a firefighter. Fortunately for The Standard, Patrick puts many of his service talents to work for our Employee Benefits customers, but outside of work he’s a volunteer firefighter and emergency medical technician for the Cornelius Fire Department in Oregon. Patrick and a buddy signed up for recruit fire academy in the spring of 2014. This four-month program combines classroom study and physical training drills. “It’s quite a commitment — eight hours every Saturday and Sunday,” said Patrick.

The birth of Patrick’s second daughter meant he didn’t have as much time to devote to pursuing a firefighting career, but he could still volunteer. “I think this is a great way to get involved with the community and help make people’s lives a little bit better,” he said. Patrick started emergency medical technician school, a six-month program, through Portland Community College in January 2015. Since earning his EMT certificate, Patrick has been volunteering as both a firefighter and an EMT with the Cornelius Fire Department. “Now I can go out on all the calls officially, which is that much more exciting,” he said.

Patrick claims one of the biggest lessons he takes away from his volunteer work is, above all, staying safe. “Teamwork is really paramount in this business,” he said. “Keep yourself safe, your teammates safe and your patients safe.”

The reward is great when you invest in others.Darlene Gallinger-Long knows she works for a company that supports employees’ active involvement in their communities. She believes The Standard has allowed her to shine through many avenues of volunteering, both those coordinated by the company and those closer to her heart and home in Oregon. “When you consider what a volunteer is,” Darlene said, “it’s usually described as a person who performs service on their free time without accepting payment. While I feel I meet this definition in general, I firmly believe I receive a reward by doing this.” Through the Employee Giving Campaign, scheduled volunteer activities at work, her kids’ schools and her church, Darlene is deeply involved throughout her community. That participation is a strong force that blends both her professional and personal lives as she’s passionate about setting an active example for her children. During the school year, Darlene is an active parent in her younger son’s elementary school. She has also volunteered to be part of the classroom training offered by Junior Achievement, a national nonprofit that helps teach kids financial literacy skills. “A lot of these topics — such as using credit cards, how to write checks, how to manage funds — aren’t taught in school,” she said, “and they may not learn them at home, but these are skills they will need throughout their lifetime.” “I think volunteering time keeps us grounded, and we integrate that into our family,” Darlene said. “It just feels like the right thing to do.”

Investing in children benefits everyone.During a monthly volunteer project a few years ago, Mary Gordon discovered Friends of the Children. Mary believed in its model and she saw the results. She wanted to be more involved.

Friends of the Children was established in Portland in 1993 to break the cycle of generational poverty by providing a stable mentor to high-risk children starting in kindergarten. Kids who are identified to participate in the program often come from homes where there’s poverty, abuse or neglect or have an incarcerated parent, and some come from families that don’t have a stable place to sleep at night. With no intervention, many of these children end up repeating the pattern in their own lives.

Friends of the Children developed a model where it employs and trains mentors, called Friends, who spend time in each child’s home, school, neighborhood and community. The organization itself commits to every child for the long term, from kindergarten through high school graduation.

Mary saw for herself how much value the nonprofit brought and the difference it made in kids’ lives. She went from being a book buddy to using her event-planning talents for the organization’s main annual fundraiser, which last year raised $1.8 million.

Last fall Mary joined the Ambassador Board where she acts as a spokesperson spreading word of the nonprofit within our community. She’s proud of the fact that the Harvard Business School Association of Oregon showed that for every $1 invested in Friends of the Children, the community benefits by more than $7 in saved expenses the child would have otherwise incurred. Helping one child potentially saves the community $900,000.

“It really appeals to me that what they do is working,” Mary said. “That benefits all of us. So working with them is one of the best ways I can help create the world I want to live in.”

Advocating for children, including his own. There’s probably no more potent force on earth than a parent advocating for his child. That is certainly the case for Brent Snyder, whose advocacy benefits not just his child but many other lives. His daughter, Peyton, was born almost five years ago with Prader-Willi Syndrome, a rare genetic disorder that affects her growth, her movement, her ability to learn and, eventually, her ability to live independently.

According to the Foundation for Prader-Willi Research, the genetic disorder occurs in approximately one out of every 15,000 births.

Early on, Brent and wife Renee’s online search turned up the foundation’s website. The foundation focuses mainly on supporting medical research to help uncover the core genetic causes of PWS in order to develop therapies and assistance for overcoming the syndrome’s many challenges.

Brent, who with his family lives in Orange County, California, said of the many challenges PWS presents — including abnormal growth, intellectual disability and weak muscles — it’s the insatiable hunger that he fears is her biggest obstacle to leading an independent life.

After several trips to Los Angeles and San Diego to participate in fundraising walks, the couple decided to get involved locally. In 2015 they organized a walk in Orange County. In the past two years, 150 people have participated, raising $25,000 the first year and nearly $40,000 the second.

Brent and Renee have received a lot of encouragement from the community as well as the support groups they’ve found. Brent — who joined The Standard in September 2016 — has received a lot of support from his co-workers and the company. “I am really touched,” he said. “This is a company filled with amazing people. My lifelong goal is to raise as much awareness for Prader-Willi Syndrome as possible, so winning the Leo Award is truly a blessing.”

Our company and The Standard Charitable Foundation, which has a mission of making a positive difference in the places we live and work by targeting support to community development, education, disability and health organizations, provided direct support for a number of organizations in 2016 including:

SMART celebrates 25 yearsIn 2016, Start Making A Reader Today celebrated 25 years of pairing caring adult volunteers with local students to create a fun, child-guided reading experience that empowers children for reading and academic success. To celebrate this important silver anniversary, SMART published its own children’s book, Oregon Reads Aloud — a collection of 25 read-aloud stories by Oregon authors and illustrators about subjects such as food carts, bikes, Bigfoot, volcanoes, salmon and the Pendleton Round-Up. The Standard underwrote the publication of Oregon Reads Aloud with a $25,000 grant.

Open School dedicated Open School, formerly known as Open Meadow, helps kids excel academically, graduate, go to college and enter the modern workforce. This college-prep school serves students who show signs of struggling as early as sixth grade. The school gives kids rigorous academics, teachers who believe in them and a whole lot of relentless love and support. And it works. Students advance an average of 2.5 grade levels in math and reading in their first year. Open School dedicated its new Gresham, Oregon, school in 2016. Oregon Governor Kate Brown, state and local leaders as well as teachers, staff and students were among those in attendance for the dedication ceremony. The Standard Charitable Foundation contributed two grants totaling $90,000 in 2015 and 2016 to support the construction of the new Open School building.

Altavista office opening includes philanthropy The Standard opened a satellite office in Altavista, Virginia, in 2016. In keeping with our tradition of strong community support, the celebratory event was marked with the announcement of charitable contributions to three local nonprofit organizations: Altavista Area YMCA, an organization that provides child care, fitness, sports, aquatics, services for seniors and operates the Altavista Arts Council; Altavista Area/Campbell County Habitat for Humanity, which invites people of all backgrounds,

races and religions to build homes together in partnership with families in need; and Frannie’s House, a program of the YWCA of Central Virginia that provides shelter and services to area women and children who are victims of domestic violence.

Town Center Courtyards expands housingThe opening of Town Center Courtyards, located in Happy Valley, Oregon, added 60 units to Central City Concern’s existing 92 units of family housing. Central City Concern’s Family Housing program has served more than 1,000 families who are homeless or vulnerable to homelessness since 2000. In fact, the family housing program served 122 families that included 189 children in 2016. Families reap the rewards of stable housing in a variety of ways — kids stay with their families and avoid foster care, parents find employment and complete their education and families find permanent housing. The Standard Charitable Foundation was proud to support this project with a $10,000 grant in 2016.

Camp Abilities promotes participation NW Association for Blind Athletes changes the lives of blind and visually impaired youth and adults with sports throughout Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Montana. 2016 marked a milestone for the organization with the launch of Camp Abilities. Camp Abilities is a developmental sports camp that aims to break the cycle of sitting on the sidelines for blind and visually impaired youth aged 8 – 15. The Standard provided a grant for the inaugural year of the camp, which is offered at no cost to attendees and promotes independence, self-advocacy and increased socialization with peers — right in line with the simple wishes of parents and guardians: their campers having a friend, being happy and learning to ride a bike. In the end, Camp Abilities fulfilled all those wishes.
