MESERVE FIELD

On Friday, Oct. 3, 2008, Dr. Lee Meserve and his wife Marge were honored at the field formerly known as the BGSU Softball Field. Effective at 4:00 p.m. Eastern Time on that date, the home to the Falcon softball team is now called Meserve Softball Field.

Dr. Lee Meserve and his wife, Marge, were recognized in a ceremony at the field that now bears their name. That ceremony included the unveiling of a new “Meserve Softball Field” sign, along with remarks by Dr. Meserve and then-BGSU Director of Athletics Greg Christopher.

A native of Hollis, Maine, Dr. Meserve is in his 43rd year at the University, and his 18th as the school’s faculty athletics representative. He and his wife are fixtures at Falcon athletic events, rain or shine, day or night. The couple also endowed the Meserve Scholarship, given to BGSU’s Senior Male and Senior Female Student-Athletes of the Year.

Dr. Meserve began his teaching career at BGSU in 1973 after receiving his Ph.D. at Rutgers University and working at Vassar College. During his time in Northwest Ohio, he has served as an assistant professor, associate professor, professor

and distinguished teaching professor of biological sciences.

Dr. Meserve received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Maine in 1966 in animal sciences, and his doctorate degree from Rutgers in 1972 in zoology.

He holds membership in numerous honor societies including Omicron Delta Kappa and Sigma Phi Omega. In 1990, he was the recipient of the Hollis A. Moore University Service Award. Two years later, he was honored with the BGSU

Master Teacher Award. Dr. Meserve was also the recipient of the BGSU Distinguished Teaching Professorship in 1993, received the BGSU Honorary Alumnus Award in 1997 and was given the BGSU President’s Advising Award in 2001. Marge Meserve retired after a career of over 30 years as a Medical Technologist at Wood County Hospital, where she was supervisor of the blood bank. Besides BGSU athletics, she is currently deeply involved in gardening and is an enamel on copper artist. She has been involved in the Black Swamp Arts Festival in Bowling Green for each of the 16 years since its inception, and received Honorable Mention for her art work at the Festival in September 2008.

Six light poles were added to the Meserve Field complex on Nov. 21, 2013. BGSU now has the luxury of playing under the lights, enhancing the overall experience of a Falcon softball game day.

Sarah Willis begins her first year as head coach of the Bowling Green State University softball program. BGSU Director of Athletics D. Christopher Kingston has announced the hiring of Willis on July 1, 2015.

“It’s an honor to lead the softball program at Bowling Green State University,” said Willis. “I would like to extend my thanks to Chris Kingston, (search committee chair) Jim Elsasser, and President Mary Ellen Mazey for entrusting me with this great opportunity. The Falcons have an exceptionally rich academic and athletic tradition and I welcome the opportunity to unite in the efforts to achieve national prominence for the BGSU softball program.

“This is a great university that plays in an extremely competitive softball conference. I am thrilled to be a Falcon now and ready to meet our team and hit the ground running.”

Willis came to Northwest Ohio after a highly-successful stint on the staff at the University of Dayton. During the 2015 season, her first with UD, Willis helped the Flyers to a 39-14 overall record and an Atlantic 10 Conference mark of 20-2. UD broke the school record for wins in a season, and the Flyers earned the first A-10 regular-season title in program history. Dayton also advanced to the A-10 Tournament Championship final for the first time in history.

“We are so proud to welcome Sarah to the Falcon Family as the leader of the BGSU Softball program,” said Kingston. “She rose to the top in a competitive field of candidates because of her energy, attention to detail and thorough understanding of what it takes to prepare these young women to excel academically and compete at the highest level.”

Willis worked with the Flyer pitching staff, achieving tremendous success in ‘15. The staff led the conference and ranked among the top-25 in the nation in several categories. UD led the league

in wins, saves (10), winning percentage (.736), strikeouts (353), shutouts (12), fewest runs allowed (155) and fewest earned runs allowed (118). The Flyers also surrendered the fewest hits, doubles, triples and homeruns of any A-10 team in 2015.

The Willis-led pitching corps included the 2015 Atlantic 10 Pitcher of the Year in Kayla English, as well as the A-10’s Rookie of the Year in Manda Cash. English earned all-conference first-team honors, while Cash was named to the second team. Additionally, English was named the A-10 Pitcher of the Week on four occasions, while Cash earned four A-10 Rookie-of-the-Week honors. Cash set the school single-season saves record, leading the nation in that category, and she earned the final NFCA National Pitcher-of-the-Week honor of the 2015 season.

Willis joined the Dayton program after spending two seasons (2012-14) as an assistant coach as Southeast Missouri State University. She also spent several years (2010-12) as an assistant coach at Princeton University. Willis coached the pitchers, catchers and outfielders at Princeton, and her duties at SEMO included skill instruction and player physical, mental and emotional development of pitchers/catchers/hitters on a day-to-day basis.

Willis was the recruiting coordinator for both the Tigers and the Redhawks.

In 2012, Willis spent the summer with the North Carolina Diamonds of the NPF where she coached along with Teresa Wilson, one of the top pitching instructors in the nation. Willis assisted in skill instruction and management of pitchers, catchers, outfielders and offense along with helping develop individualized training programs for the athletes.

Willis began her coaching career as a student assistant coach at Texas Tech University, her alma mater. She pitched for the Red Raiders from 2005-08, and finished her career with 22 wins and 298 strikeouts in 113 appearances. She was named to the Texas Tech dean’s and president’s honor lists. In 2007, Willis had the highest GPA of any female athlete at the school.

Willis graduated from Texas Tech in 2008, with a bachelor’s degree in psychology. She went on to earn her master’s degree in exercise and sport sciences from TTU in 2010.

Brittany Lastrapes is in her first season with the Bowling Green State University softball program. Head coach Sarah Willis announced the addition of Lastrapes to her staff on August 25, 2015.

“I am excited to name Brittany as the lead assistant for the BGSU softball program,” said Willis. “We are extremely fortunate to have her join the staff. She brings a wealth of knowledge to the program and will make an immediate impact with the Falcons’ offense and outfield. Brittany is one of the brightest young minds in the game today and her work ethic is exactly what our team needs.”

Lastrapes, a native of Laguna Niguel, Calif., is no stranger to the state of Ohio or the Mid-American Conference. She comes to BGSU after spending the last three years on the staff at Miami University. While with the RedHawks, Lastrapes primarily worked with the outfielders, slappers and hitters.

Lastrapes began her coaching career at MU after a stellar playing career at the University of Arizona. A leftfielder, she earned All-America honors in all four seasons for the Wildcats, including first-team accolades in 2009, ‘10 and ‘11 after earning All-America Third-Team honors as a freshman. Lastrapes was named to the All-Pac-10 First Team in each of her four years.

Lastrapes helped legendary coach Mike Candrea and the Wildcats post an NCAA runner-up finish during her junior season, and UA advanced to the College World Series three times during her career. She batted .417 during her four-year career, and graduated as the school’s record-holder in career doubles (66). Lastrapes is listed among the school leaders on multiple season and career lists at UA. She started all 223 of the Wildcats’ games during her four years. Additionally, Lastrapes was a member of the U.S. National Team from 2007-10.

Lastrapes earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from UA in 2011, with a minor in sociology. She has taken classes toward earning her master’s degree in sport administration at Miami.

ASST. COACH TIFFANY RICKS

Tiffany Ricks begins her first season with the Bowling Green State University softball program. Head coach Sarah Willis announced the hiring of Ricks as an assistant coach on August 25, 2015.

“Tiffany is coming to the Falcon softball program after finishing a standout career with the Dayton Flyers, and her experience as one of the Atlantic 10’s top offensive threats will provide great experience to our athletes,” said Willis. “She played the game with an incredible amount of tenacity, heart and focus. I believe her approach to the game will make a significant contribution to the program.”

Ricks, a native of Reynoldsburg, Ohio, is beginning her coaching career at BGSU, after wrapping up an incredibly successful playing career in the spring of 2015. A graduate of the University of Dayton, Ricks was named the Atlantic 10 Conference Player of the Year in ‘15, after batting .393 on the year, including .446 against A-10 opponents. She led the league in home runs (12), runs batted in (36) and runs scored (33).

Ricks, a first baseman, was named to the NFCA Mid-Atlantic Region Team in each of her last two seasons. She was named to the All-Atlantic 10 Team three times, and finished as UD’s career leader in RBI (126) and slugging percentage (.660). Ricks ranks second all-time in career homers at Dayton, with 36.

Ricks and the Flyers earned the program’s first Atlantic 10 regular-season title in 2015, breaking the school records for overall (39) and conference (20) wins in a season. UD went 39-14 overall and 20-2 in conference play, and advanced to the A-10 Tournament Championship final for the first time in school history.

Ricks graduated from UD in May of 2015 with a bachelor’s degree in marketing.
