For 34 years the Red Door Family Shelter has been providing help and hope to women and families affected by homelessness and abuse. The shelter, support and outreach services provided at our two shelters help hundreds of families each year to heal and rebuild their lives.

In total we served 494 families, which is a reduction of 18% compared with the previous year. The primary reason for the decrease was not because there was less demand, but because homeless families had to stay longer at the shelter. Of the 237 families who sought emergency shelter, 32% stayed for 5 months or more.

One of the main reasons why families stayed longer is the lack of subsidized housing, which meant that families needed time to save and find an affordable home. Even so, of the 83 families who were housed after staying at the shelter, 60 had to move into a private market rental unit, and spend an average of 76% of their income on rent, a 9% increase over the year before.

It is a financial struggle for many families to remain housed after leaving the shelter. This means that they can be at risk of becoming homeless again. This year 257 families depended on the Red Door’s housing and outreach services to be able to keep paying the rent, put food on the table, stay in work or education and pay the bills.

Construction of a modern Red Door sanctuary for homeless families will begin at our family shelter site in the near future. During that time we will operate from a temporary location before moving into the new shelter. We remain committed to providing high-quality service for our clients throughout the transition period.

To date our Community of Hope Capital Campaign has raised over $1.1M towards the $3M we need for equipment, furnishings and resident services at the new family shelter. We are grateful to those volunteers and donors who have supported us in our fundraising so far.

Without our dedicated team of tireless staff, committed volunteers and very generous donors we could not continue to provide the programs and services that help families to achieve the long-term objectives of stability and independence.

Thank you for your kind support. You are truly making a difference.

On any given night at the Red Door more than half of the residents are children and teens. Without help that goes beyond basic shelter and food, the negative effects of homelessness and its root causes can last throughout a youth’s lifetime. That is why we help children and teens by providing Child and Youth Programs that focus on healthy childhood development, education and recreation. This year, thanks to your support, we were able to make a difference in the lives of 305 children and teens. You helped provide

MORE THAN JUsT gROcERiEs

Our Food Bank is about more than just providing groceries for families. It’s a helping hand through a critical time. It’s giving a mother a sense of security and peace of mind, knowing that at the end of the month, she won’t have to choose between paying the rent and feeding her children. That kind of support is invaluable.

Over 95% of the families who access our Food Bank and other transitional services after they leave the shelter remain successfully housed and achieve their goal of independence.

You gave a helping hand to 204 families

through our food bank.

Many families who come to the Red Door have little or no personal possessions because they have fled abuse or suffered significant financial hardship. When families are ready to move out, the reality of limited affordable housing in Toronto means that most families spend up to 76% of their income on rent alone. The average $1,800 savings per family that the program provides has a tangible impact in helping a family successfully transition into self-sufficiency. Your support helped 72 families move into their new homes.

Our new family shelter will be a welcoming sanctuary. There will be 20,000 sq ft. of shelter space with private bedrooms

for each family and dedicated programming space.

BUiLdiNg A cOMMUNiTY Of HOPE

We have come a long way since March 2014 when the family shelter was left without a concrete future after the property was placed into receivership.

Support has been building since we launched our campaign to secure the future of our new family shelter at our original location of 875 Queen St. East.

With the agreement now reached between the Red Door, Harhay Development, and the City Toronto, our dream of a new purpose-built family shelter at our original home will soon be a reality. The mixed-use development will be a first of its kind in Toronto to combine a shelter, retail and residential condos on the same site.

To date, more than 100 supporters have donated over $1.1M towards our Community of Hope Capital Campaign, including Red Door board members and staff, business leaders, major corporations and community groups.

We look forward to being able to open our new red doors to a modern, safe sanctuary where vulnerable homeless families can receive the best possible support.

“i really love that Red door keeps families together and that they put so much effort into caring for their community members, from education to counselling to legal help.”

dONOR HigHLigHTs

Organizers of the Lift your spirits ski day pre-sented us with a cheque for $18,000 from their event proceeds to benefit our Moving Program.

84 runners and walkers joined Team Red door last year in the scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon, half-marathon, 5k and in the Toronto Yonge street 10k to raise awareness and over $33,000 for our both our food bank and our children’s programs.

Join us this year! Visit: reddoorshelter.ca/marathon

Over the past year, our family guardians monthly giving circle has grown to over 130 members who together are giving more than $40,000 annually; enough provide 3 months of children’s programming at the shelter.

“it’s awesome. The donations have a huge, huge impact on the services Red door provides.”
