The Health & Safety Executives Approved Code of Practice (L8) - for the control of legionella bacteria in water systems is enforceable principally under and The Health & Safety at Work etc. Act 1974

managers The COSHH Regulations. It affects all employers and with Legionnaires' disease is responsibility for water systems in premises.

also classified as a 'gradual pollutant' by the ABI. Therefore, any businessfailing to meet HSE requirements may find their insurance liability affected.

In order to meet the a comprehensive Approved Code of Practice (L8)must be carried out and reviewed on a legionellosis risk assessment

regular basis.

The main purpose of a Legionellosis Risk Assessment:To identify and assess any existing or potential sources of risk.1 Include a detailed written scheme for controlling any risk.2 Allow the building owner to make an informed decision regarding risk.3 Comply with current Legislation and Regulations.4

Amphibia lead the market in legionellosis risk assessment and in 1989 we developed the industries very first . legionella risk rating systems To ensure full ACoP (L8) compliance, drawings of each water system are also included with the report to help clearly identify specific problem areas. Amphibia drawings are produced using the very latest computer aided design (CAD) technology and provided for clients on digital media

Water and air management programmes involve carrying out a range of routine tasks throughout the year specifically to ensure each system either meets or exceeds statutory requirements. The type of tasks and there frequencies are specified in your and will Legionellosis Risk Assessment vary from site to site (depending on risk) but may include for example,

monthly sentinel outlet temperature checks, monthly or six monthly 1) 2) detailed system condition inspections, servicing of any water treatment 3)systems routine water system cleaning / disinfection. 4)

Bacteriological monitoring is also an important aspect of any good management programme as it provides indicators to water or air quality.Contamination can occur in any part of a system if control measures are inadequate or not reviewed regularly. In fact, 70% of all water and air systems tested in recent research showed signs of bacteriological contamination including Legionella pneumophila the species that can cause Legionnaires’ disease. As the normal operation and design of most water and air systems can allow contaminants to transfer into the atmosphere, building occupants and others in the vicinity may be at risk.

Vulnerable areas for contamination include: Cold water storage tanks, Hot water calorifiers, Cooling towers and 1) 2) 3)

evaporative condensers, Spray humidifiers, Showers, Spa Pools,4) 5) 6) Pipework, Air conditioning systems, Industrial process systems.7) 8) 9)

For this reason, it is vital to implement an ongoing management programme to monitor these systems and any precautions taken to control health risks. Our experienced Team of service technicians, consultants, microbiologists and chemists are on hand to prepare a ‘site specific’ Management Programme to ensure health risks are controlled strategically at a minimal cost for our clients. To ensure any test results remain completely impartial, analysis is always undertaken by our international network of independent UKAS accredited laboratories. Furthermore, our unique ‘Sample Coding System’ (exclusive to Amphibia) is used to ensure complete protection of our . clients identity and confidentiality

All management programmes meet or exceed all relevant standardsincluding and water quality sampling is carried ACoP (L8), NHS HTM 04-01out in accordance with .BS7592

Indoor air quality in the workplace can be affected not only by external air conditions but also by pollutants created in the workplace itself.

Almost everyone occasionally feels unwell because they are suffering from one or more common symptoms of discomfort such as

headaches, dry throat or sore eyes. But there are occasions when, for no obvious reasons, people working in particular buildings experience

these types of symptoms more often than is usual.

The symptoms tend to increase in severity with time spent in the may building and improve over time or disappear completely when away

from the building.

Testing indoor air quality is not as expensive as you may think and ourassess expertise and facilities allow us to a range of parameters

including:

PHYSICAL OR ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORSC overing physical conditions:

Air quality (including ventilation, outdoor air supply air , 1 ) flow and air changes per hourmovement ).

Temperature, Humidity, Lighting and Noise.2) Gases, Particulates and Bacteriological.3) Office Equipment and Furnishings.4) Maintenance of the building and building services systems. 5) Cleaning operations, including office furnishings. 6)

JOB FACTORSSuch as the variety and interest of particular jobs and people’s

ability to control certain aspects of their work and working environment:

Management Systems.1) Work organisation, including display screen equipment work. 2)

Amphibia’s prompt and systematic investigation strategy results in a detailed report of our findings together with any necessary

recommendations.

Poorly maintained air conditioning and ventilation systems can harbormicro-organisms and respirable particulate deliver contaminated s, ing

air to all areas within a building. Dust mite allergens, pollen, fungal spores and micro-organsisms are just a few of the invisible sources

ill health in that produce people working in a building.

The law recognises the importance of air quality through the Health, and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 The Control of Substances

and The Hazardous to Health Regulations (COSHH) Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992. These regulations

lay a clear duty on employers to measure, monitor and manage workplace air quality. In particular “Mechanical ventilation systems

(including air conditioning systems) should be regularly andproperly cleaned, tested and maintained to ensure that they are

kept clean and free from anything that can contaminate the air.”

DEGREASING KITCHEN EXTRACT SYSTEMS within buildings become contaminated Kitchen extraction systems

very quickly due to there frequent use. The build up of hot oils and fats within the extract ductwork can present a serious fire risk if steps are not taken to remove all flammable substances. In fact, if your kitchen extract system caught fire and you were unable to provide a certificate to prove it was cleaned recently your insurance liability may be affected. Amphibia provide a certified deep clean service to ensure flammable contaminants and fire risks are controlled. GENERAL VENTILATION CLEANING

and Air handling units (AHU) ductwork air distribution systems supply and extract air to/from spaces throughout your building. In doing so, these systems control the quality of breathing air to protect personnel and sensitive equipment from potentially hazardous airborne contaminants. If contaminated, these systems can lose efficiency, fail to supply safe air, cause malfunction and even cause fire hazards. Amphibia use the very latest cleaning technology toensure systems can be cleaned safely and quickly with minimal down time.

Work carried out meets the requirements of the HVCA, NADCA,BSRIA, CIBSE and all other standards and guidance.
