Remember in Prayer As members of the parish faith community, it is our responsibility to remember both in concrete and spiritual ways those who cannot celebrate with us each week because they are ill. Those who are sick in turn, remember all of us daily in their prayers and in their sufferings.

““Rather, when you hold a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind; blessed indeed will you be because of their inability to repay you." Luke 14:13 -14 We have a difficult me with the concept of giving without expec ng something in return. Even when we give to charity we o en want something in return – a raffle cket, a dinner, or a chance to play golf. Yet, as Chris an stewards we need to remember that the true reward for our giving awaits us in heaven.

We invite anyone able to help with the church cleaning. Please join us weekly on Mondays at 5:00 pm

and Fridays at 10:00 am. Thank you!

Sincere THANK YOU to all who give their me to keep our church clean. Thank you for your faithfulness and dependability. Please know

Prayer When Things Seem Impossible A prayer group was discussing what was the best posi on for prayer. One person said, “On my knees.” Another said, “Si ng before the Tabernacle.” Another said, “I pray best out walking.” The conversa on went on. Finally, an electrician who was repairing a light switch in the back of the room entered the conversa on. Coming toward the circle of friends he said, “I can tell you how I prayed best: hanging upside down from a telephone pole in a storm!” How do you pray when you are desperate? How do you mix use of your own abili es with depending on God? Jesus was not in the habit of sending people away. I imagine him talking to himself as much as to the disciples when he said, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” The woman got close enough to Jesus to “do him homage” and plead her case. What was Jesus thinking? He replied, “It is not right to take the food of the children and throw it to the dogs.” Was he musing, trying to figure out what to do? Was he reflec ng beliefs of his me? Did he not yet understand his mission extended beyond the Jews? Scholars have debated those ques ons for centuries. We don’t know. Whatever Jesus had been thinking, he responded with openness and love when the woman said, “Please, Lord, for even the dogs eat the scraps that fall from the table of their masters.” The woman stuck to truth, a relevant truth, and trusted. Spoken so boldly, it set free God’s love. Jesus said to her, “Woman, great is your faith! Let it be done for you as you wish.” Her daughter was healed.

I do not blame God when bad things happen. I do not say, “I guess it is God’s will.” God does not will evil. But I do cower and wail when things get really bad. Too many mes in my life I have let evil determine what happens next in my life because I did not do what the electrician did from the telephone poll and what the Canaanite woman did with Jesus: with heart and soul cry out to God to do the impossible, then use my human abili es to cooperate with whatever opportuni es God gives me. When the Canaanite woman cried out, Jesus’ response was the response of a loving God: he healed her daughter. My answer is a reflec on on my own life. When I have persistently and boldly cried out to God in desperate situa ons, God helped. He was there. His solu on didn’t always match my picture of solu on, but God always had a good solu on. When I have been like the Israelites and awfulized the situa on so I grew overwhelmed and helpless, I had to endure desperate

mes with only my human capaci es. I did not have good solu ons. I suffered—o en with an added suffering of feeling alienated from God. God simply let the Israelites experience that, indeed, they couldn’t overcome the inhabitants of the Promised Land on their own. They would have to wait, experiencing desert, un l they were willing to trust him to show them how to do it. That, too, can explain desert mes in my life when I did not trust God enough. He let me experience the consequences of my lack of trust—to help me learn to let go and let God. Mary Ortwein —- www.acatholic.org

ON DANDELIONS, SONGS, AND THE TABLE OF THE WORLD — Copyright 2015 by John B. Reynolds ([email protected])

As I consider the Gospel passage for this 22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time, something that my daughter Sarah said when she was small--well over twenty years ago now--comes rushing back to me. I was pulling dandelions in our front yard when Sarah came out and asked what I was doing. I told her. She asked me why, and in my memory I explained to her first that the classic defini on of a weed is an unwanted plant. I then explained further that even though the dandelions may look kind of pre y, they were s ll unwanted, and hence, I was ge ng rid of them. Then she said something profound that I put into my memory. “In my garden,” Sarah said, “all of the plants will be welcome.” I’d forgo en something else Sarah told me long ago, too, and like all the plants being welcome in her garden, this memory is also triggered by my considera on of today’s Gospel. Sarah was several years older when she came home from grade school one day and told me she had a new favorite song at church. I asked her which one. “At the Table of the World,” she said. I knew the song, but I hadn’t focused on the words. I didn’t that day, either, even though Sarah proceeded to sing it for me (both song and singer, beau ful): At the table of the world, some have plenty, some have none/ At the table of our God, all are plen fully fed/ Blow among us, Spirit of God, fill us with your courage and care! Hurricane and Breath/ Take us on a journey of love. I didn’t have this thought back then, but it hits me now that Sarah’s view of her garden and her choice of favorite songs are

two sides of the same (inclusive) flip coin. “In my garden, all of the plants will be welcome.” At the table of our God, all are plen fully fed. I should have made the connec on years ago, and indeed, maybe I did. But life got busy, apparently, and I set it aside. Regardless, it’s in front of me now, and I embrace it. According to Pablo Picasso, “There is only one way to look at things, un l someone shows how to look at them with different eyes.” Exactly. If “Catholic” means universal, then Sarah gets it, I think, and has for a long, long me. All of which brings me to the actual Gospel text genera ng these memories and realiza ons. A er first speaking about the lowly being brought higher at a dinner party (and life…) while the important are brought low, Jesus gives the big-shot Pharisee host--and all of us--something to think about. “When you hold a lunch or dinner, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your rela ves or your wealthy neighbors, in case they may invite you back and you have repayment,” Jesus says. “Rather, when you hold a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind; blessed indeed will you be because of their inability to repay you. For you will be repaid at the resurrec on of the righteous.” Per the second verse of Sarah’s favorite song, At the table of the world, some have honor, some have scorn/ At the table of our God, all are welcomed and acclaimed… Well, there you go. “In my garden, all of the plants will be welcome.” And here we are .
