The Champaign Urbana Theatre Company is returning to the Virginia Theatre to produce and perform — with live musical accompaniment — in their first theatrical engagement at the historic downtown venue since 2009. OKLAHOMA! is being directed by Stephen Fiol, conducted by Dave Ivy, musical director Liz Martin. Produced by Todd Salen and presented by the Champaign Park District.OKLAHOMA! is the first stage musical written by the creative team of composer Richard Rodgers and librettist Oscar Hammerstein II. Based on Lynn Riggs’ 1931 play, Green Grow the Lilacs, the original 1943 Broadway production of OKLAHOMA! was an unprecedented critical and popular success. Set in 1906 Oklahoma Territory, it tells the story of cowboy Curly McLain and his romance with farm girl Laurey Williams and features musical numbers – including Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin, The Surrey with the Fringe on Top, and Oklahoma! – that became standards in the Great American Songbook.

Described by Spin as “one of the greatest living voices in rock,” Grace Potter continues to impress critics and audiences alike with her captivating shows. Heralded as one of today’s best live performers, Potter has played every major music festival from Lollapalooza to Bonnaroo and has had the honor of sharing the stage with Dave Matthews Band, The Rolling Stones, Willie Nelson, Robert Plant, and Neil Young, to name a few. For an artist who has built a devoted fan base through electrifying live shows, Grace Potter refuses to be defined by a single genre. Over the last three years, she’s transitioned from songwriting to producing soundtracks for film and TV and recording multi-platinum, Grammy-nominated country duets with friend Kenny Chesney. In 2015, Grace performed (at the invitation of Michelle Obama) for the troops in Qatar. Last fall, Ms. Potter was honored with the Governor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts in her home state of Vermont. Her epic musical journey has included four studio records, countless collaborations, plus a new milestone with the August 2016 arrival of her solo CD debut, Midnight.

ANDREW PETERSON presents BEHOLD THE LAMB OF GODPresented by Gather Round ProductionsTickets: $35/$30/$25 On Sale Now

For more than twenty years, Andrew Peterson has gone about the business of quietly changing lives in four-minute increments. In the city of Nashville where music is an industry in the same way fast food, generic greeting cards, and bumper stickers are industries, Peterson has forged his own path, refusing the artistic compromises that so often come with chasing album sales and radio singles and creating instead a long line of songs that ache with sorrow, joy, and integrity, and that are, at the end of the day, part of a real, ongoing, human conversation.

A life full of music—that’s the story of Ricky Skaggs. By age twenty-one, he was already considered a recognized master of one of America’s most demanding art forms, but his career took him in other directions, catapulting him to popularity and success in the mainstream of country music. His path’s taken him to various musical genres, from where it all began in bluegrass music to striking out on new musical journeys, while still leaving his

musical roots intact. Along the way, Skaggs has played with everyone from Bill Monroe (when Ricky was a musical prodigy of six) and Flatt and Scruggs, to Ralph Stanley, Emmylou Harris, Bruce Hornsby, Vince Gill, and countless others.

Ricky struck his first chords on a mandolin over 50 years ago, and this 14-time Grammy Award winner continues to do his part to lead the recent roots revival in music. With 12 consecutive #1, Grammy-nominated classic hits behind him, all from his own Skaggs Family Records label, the diverse and masterful tones made by the gifted Ricky Skaggs come from a life dedicated to playing music that is both fed by the soul and felt by the heart.

Yes, We Do Weddings!

Built in 1921, the Virginia Theatre has hosted thousands of films, live shows, and special events in her ninety-five storied years. Everyone came to the Virginia, for everything from sold-out summertime recitals by Thelma Leah Rose’s dance students, pipe organ concerts, and the finest performers of the vaudeville era, to the likes of Stevie Ray Vaughan, Alison Krauss, BB King, and countless others—each of them taking their place on the Virginia’s legendary stage.

Beginning this fall, we are reaching out to the commu-nity as we begin to gather some of that history togeth-er, from old photographs, press clippings, posters, and programs, to the stories that made this place a second home to so many Champaign County residents.

Through exciting new partnerships with the Champaign County Historical Archives and the Champaign County Historical Museum, the Champaign Park District will be seeking artifacts, taking oral histories, and researching the Virginia’s past so that we may record a comprehen-sive history of the theatre, develop exhibits, and build an archive that generations to come may enjoy.

Watch for details this September as we launch this new project in preparation for a full year of celebrations to take place in 2021, the 100th anniversary of the Virginia Theatre!

Please call 217.356.9063 or [email protected] for more information.

GO BEHIND-THE-SCENES AND TOUR THE HISTORIC VIRGINIA THEATRE! By reservation, Tuesdays at 10:30am and Wednesdays at 6pm

Did you know that the Champaign Park District’s Virginia Theatre is listed on the National Register of Historic Places? That its original—and fully-restored—1921 Wurlitzer Pipe Organ has over 750 pipes? Or what (totally unexpected) features the painters uncovered in 2013, during a $5.5 million renovation? Come for a free, one-hour tour at downstate Illinois’s premier 1920s movie palace and live performance space and find out!

Tours are offered every Tuesday at 10:30am and Wednesday at 6pm, schedule permitting. Advance reservation required at thevirginia.org, 217/356-9063, or [email protected].

For special group tour requests, please call or email. Donations to the Virginia Theatre Restoration Fund are encouraged.

SUBSCRIPTION

32

A subscription is a purchase of a ticket to four or more qualifying events.*

Subscription purchases are offered with a discount, along with other perks (see this brochure’s inside front cover for a complete list of subscriber benefits).

For example, if you buy three tickets to five qualifying events, that’s three subscriptions, and all three sets of tickets are discounted at the subscriber price.

Purchase a ticket to six or more qualifying events and receive, along with your subscription, a Virginia Theatre Film Passport** and see great movies all season long, for free!

OK, I’M READY TO ORDERYou can use the following pages to purchase a VT Series subscription or just to order some individual tickets to shows scheduled this season. Here’s how:

STEP 1: Fill in the Order Form on the opposite page, indicating whether you’re Renewing a Subscription, purchasing a New Subscription, or just want some Individual Tickets.

Please note the seating chart. We use a Zone system to help patrons tell us where they want to sit. Most reserved seating shows have ticket prices divided up into three or four zones. Please also let us know your seating preference so we can place you in the best possible spot in the house.

STEP 2: Choose your shows:

On the following pages, we’ve listed all of the live events you can order. To order tickets as part of a subscription or individually, simply circle the date/time of each event you want (in the left column) and then write in the number of tickets you’re purchasing, per event, in the box for # of Seats.

STEP 3: Total your order. Yay, here’s the part where you get to do math!

To calculate your order total, fill in the Your Price box for each event, entering either the Discounted Subscriber Pricing (if you’re ordering four or more qualifying events) or the Individual Ticket Pricing.

Then multiply that amount times the number of tickets you want for each event and write the results in the Subtotal box.

Lastly, add up all of your event subtotals to get your Order Total.

Please return your completed order form to the Virginia Theatre box office with your payment by check (made out to Champaign Park District), or include your credit card information.

Tickets will be mailed beginning the week of August 15. (Please note, because of its early appearance in the season, Oklahoma tickets will be mailed immediately.)

Your Seats. Your Shows. Your Virginia.

Seating Chart

SORRY – no refunds, returns, or exchanges*All events labelled in this brochure as “VT Series” are qualified to receive the subscriber discount.**A Virginia Theatre Film Passport is good for admittance to all News-Gazette and Reel Deal film screenings and does not apply to Ebertfest or other special film events.
