One of the most gratifying experiences of my workday is when I engage with our students. Whether I’m in lower, middle, or upper school, the students seem to be happy, relaxed, very friendly, and accepted.

As Headmaster, an ongoing goal of mine is to have a diverse student population that mirrors our community. In some instances, parents who are interested in Winston inquire about a tuition assistance program because they lack the resources to pay the full amount for tuition. I am honored when I am able to say that we offer a program that can address their needs.

Funds for Winston’s tuition assistance program are generated from our Annual Auction & Gala, individual gifts, foundations, and the school endowment. Without the financial support from funders—which include our parent base and Trustees—our enrollment would be decreased by over 20%.

In an open letter from one of our parents who receives financial aid, she expresses her gratitude for supporters of this program and for the opportunity for her child to attend Winston. Her letter voices the trials and tribulations of her child prior to enrollment; the sadness, crying, and overwhelming anxiety were unbearable. After enrollment, her child has a new outlook on life and school. He smiles, is learning, has many new friends, is stronger in self-confidence, participates in after school activities, and can’t wait to get up the next morning to come to Winston.

She reports that life at home is so much better because her child is happy. Over the years, I am pleased to say that we have received many letters from parents sharing similar thoughts. I thank all of the donors who have sustained this program, so that we may provide opportunities for children from all walks of life to enroll in Winston.

Funds raised for the tuition assistance program, through the Annual Fund Drive, and through all fundraising efforts make a significant difference in the lives of our children and families. We sincerely thank you for your investment in Winston.

Sincerely,

A n n u a l R e p o r t 2 0 1 6 - 2 0 1 7

Recently I was reading the Spirit magazine from the Texas A&M Foundation. I discovered that the word “philanthropy” literally translates to “a love of mankind.” It made me reflect on why my husband and I give to The Winston School San Antonio; is it for a love of mankind? I wish I could say that I was altruistic enough to love all mankind, but all I can honestly say is that I know I love the Winston School. Our love for the students, staff, and mission is the first reason we give to the school.

Our love for Winston started 20 years ago when we enrolled our broken little third grader in the school. We were desperate to find help for this dyslexic boy whose love of life and love of learning had been sucked out of him. Academically and emotionally battered, he entered the doors of Winston hoping to find restoration. With teachers who not only understood his learning differences, but could also address them patiently and lovingly, our son flourished. Today, his love of life and learning are evident. Every day he dreams and plans another conquest.

Over the years, my husband and I have had opportunities to not only give of our monetary resources, but also of our time and service. In doing so, we have worked closely with students, teachers, staff, administration, and the board of trustees. We have found that the school earnestly strives to achieve its mission “to provide a personalized college preparatory education for students with high potential and identified learning differences.” Living out this mission takes a tremendous amount of vision, perseverance, determination and effort. The results are students who have their life trajectory changed forever. These students, like my son, leave with goals, confidence, and the ability to be productive men and women. Winston’s proven results are evident through the 90% college enrollment rate of Winston graduates. The school's success in achieving its mission is the second reason we give to Winston.

The final reason we give to Winston is because we know these fiscal gifts to the school are managed well and used productively for the welfare of the students. My husband and I served as trustees at different times, which gave us the opportunity to closely observe the judicious fiscal management of Winston. The school is fortunate to have the oversight of a finance committee laden with accounting and investment expertise and experience. Headmaster, Dr. Karulak, works hard to procure funds and is frugal, conscientious, and thoughtful with expenditures. Consequently, we are confident that funds given are allocated to their proper designation and used prudently for the students’ educational well-being.

As fellow philanthropists, I am sure you too carefully analyze your financial giving. Please accept my profound gratitude for choosing The Winston School San Antonio for your gifting. Let me assure you, your gift is a wise investment in the education of students whose lives are positively changed forever. Your gift is proof that you live out your “love of mankind” - thank you!

With my greatest regards,

Message From Our Annual Fund ChairAs the 2016-2017 Annual Fund Drive concluded, I was reminded of how wonderful and generous our Winston community is. Together we raised over $210,000, and approximately 90% of Winston parents contributed to help us work towards our goal. The funds raised by the Annual Fund Drive go toward school improvements and expenses that tuition cannot cover. In past years the funds raised have gone toward technology upgrades, the purchase of tablets and computer laptops, field trip necessities, and a variety of other school improvements. Because of your support, the faculty and the administration are able to provide the best possible education for our students. The Annual Fund allows our students to uncover their unique, individual strengths, thus continuing the mission of the Winston School. Your gift allows our students to learn and thrive in an environment that will set them up for a lifetime of learning success. Each gift made to the Annual Fund is a direct investment in our school and our children. Thank you for your support of the 2016-2017 Annual Fund Drive. Sincerely,

Traci Hunter2016-2017 Annual Fund ChairMom Of Owen

Winston's 27thAnnual Learning SymposiumApproximately 370 attendees, including doctors, parents, educators, social workers and more, from San Antonio and the surrounding areas, had the opportunity to hear an outstanding lecture on "Reading, the Brain, and the Child: Mapping Dyslexia." Our Keynote Speaker was Guinevere Eden, PhD, Professor of Pediatrics and Director of the Center for the Study of Learning, Georgetown University Medical Center, Washington DC. The afternoon sessions offered attendees the option to attend an Ethics Track or three breakout sessions—these sessions included discussions on more specific topics, including ADHD, Classroom Behavior, and Dyslexia and Giftedness.

Mark your calendar for the next Winston Learning Symposium,

to be held on January 26, 2018!

We believe that collaboration in the learning process is necessary and that our impact must extend beyond the classroom. Winston has compiled a wealth of resources for health and educational support beyond the classroom. The Annual Learning Symposium is

part of Winston’s outreach program. This exciting event is open to the public, and provides the San Antonio community with an opportunity to gain a better understanding of learning disabilities and how each of us can help the children affected by them.

Graduation was an emotional day for parents, grandparents, and students. The 2017 commencement speaker, Dr. Wayne Ehrisman, is the grandfather of Winston's "legacy" graduate, Christian Delgado. In his commencement speech, he encouraged students to stay true to themselves, always work hard, and use the skills that Winston has taught them to reach their full potential.

Our 2017 graduating seniors have been accepted into forty-five

different colleges and received scholarships with a total value of

over $1,400,000.
