President’s Report
The 2016/2017 season has been a truly significant season for The Hills Swimming and Life Saving Club. Having to follow on from Mark Payne’s leadership of 7 years was never going to be an easy task however I have been fortunate to have the support of similarly, enthusiastic members of the Management Committee. Ideas that began in July 2016 have successfully come into fruition throughout the course of the year, thanks to the hard work of not only the members of the Management Committee but other parents and club members as well. This past year has been busy for all our competitive members, both swimming and/or life saving. Whether a member is swimming 1 event at an interclub meet on a Sunday or 10 events at a National competition – everyone is always proud to don the blue and white and represent The Hills. Key results are highlighted in the individual reports following. The 2016/2017 season began with our Registration Day, combined with Waves Fitness and Aquatic Centre’s Open Day, last September. This day gave us the opportunity to welcome and guide many of our 105 new members, organise uniforms and cook up a storm on the BBQ. Thank you to everyone, not just committee members that helped to make the day a success. Our club celebrates the successes of each and every member. This was done on 18 June 2017 at the Sebel Resort and Spa at Windsor. Thank you to Cornette Smith for the time spent researching and securing a venue suitable to host this annual event. Finding a location that can accommodate all our members and their families is no easy task. 25 weeks sped by fast and before we knew it our Tuesday and Friday evening programs were completed for yet another season. These programs are organised, managed and run completely by volunteers. Life savers that were trained at our club willingly mentor our newer and younger members, assisting them to complete their RLSSA awards. This reinforces the fact - The Hills Swimming & Life Saving Club is a premier training club for pool life saving along with being a fun place to be. The backbone of our Tuesday night life saving program is Life Member Melanie Williams and newly inducted Life Member, Sandra Richardson. Our Friday night swim club competition has been managed this past season by Colin Jarvis, with the technological mastermind of Kemton Cline problem solving and David Delaney, sitting quietly in the background, watching and ensuring all our “I’s” are dotted and “T’s” are crossed and the results are submitted to the right place by the right time. We are truly grateful for the roles these men have played in the running of our Friday night program. Of course, all of this work by these 3 volunteers is only worthwhile if we have life members, Graham Taylor and Alan Kerruish present to guide our swimmers on correct stroke techniques – the members of our club will be forever in debt to these 2 gentlemen and the service they provide for us. We also appreciate the parents that volunteer their services – without you we could not run our Friday night program.
The Hills Swimming & Life Saving Club Inc Annual Report 2016/2017 Page 17
2016/2017 Friday night swim club saw swimmers not only focusing on swimming PB’s but also on achieving Progression Times and collecting weekly Certificates of Achievements to recognise their progress. Flip Out, Castle Hill generously provided us with gift certificates to present to our Swimmer of the Week, whilst the Aqua Shop provided the gift vouchers that we handed to the Swimmer’s of the Month over the summer period. Nothing gives me greater pleasure than chatting with swimmers on a Friday evening and hearing about their PB’s or sitting in the stands at SOPAC, watching swimmers of all ages swim, striving to achieve qualifying times for their next meet. The road to competing at a higher level of aquatic competition, be it swimming and/or life saving, is long and arduous, it requires dedication to hours of training regardless of the weather, early mornings and at times it can mean sacrificing social outings with friends. Behind all our competitive members are dedicated parents, parents that provide a constant taxi service, laundry service and catering service to fuel our swimmers to keep them going. Whilst they may not always remember to say the words, “Thank you” to us, the satisfied look on their faces at the finish of an event, says it all. One of the special moments of 2016 was most definitely standing in the gym at Waves Fitness and Aquatic Centre with squad members; supporting and watching Tim Hodge swim in 2 finals at the Rio Paralympics, setting 2 more Australian Age records in the process. Not to be outdone, only a month later our life savers also “did us proud” at Rescue 2016 in Belgium. It was exciting to wake up each morning to photos of smiles and read about the overnight achievements of our life savers At the beginning of the summer season Swimming Australia launched their Optus Junior Dolphins Program. The club embraced this initiative wholeheartedly. Changes were made to our Friday Night Swim Club program to accommodate our youngest members and we hosted a small Optus Junior Dolphins Carnival on a Saturday afternoon in November. It was great to see our youngest members, looking resplendent in their bright yellow Optus Junior Dolphins shirts against the beautiful backdrop of the blue skies at Waves. Jessica Coetzee and Jessica Payne, our official Dolphin Trainers, did a wonderful job co-ordinating our swimmers and the activities. We were grateful to the support provided by the representatives from Swimming Australia, Swimming New South Wales, past Australian Dolphin, Kurt Herzog and the magnificent, transforming, very tolerant Optus Dolphin. Jess Coetzee’s silver squad and their parents were wonderful ambassadors, assisting all our little Optus Junior Dolphins.

The highlight of the year was definitely February 12, 2017– the club’s 50th birthday. The day commenced with a 12 & Under Development meet, open to all members of the swimming community along with any of our local primary school children that wanted the opportunity to compete in a swimming carnival. Thanks must go to Graham Taylor and Alan Kerruish, our own experienced Technical Officials for organising enough extra Technical Officials for us to be able to hold such an event. Not only was this a great fundraiser for the club it was also a community event. Following the carnival we hosted afternoon tea, complete with games, pizza, snow cones and birthday cake. It was wonderful to play host to our Club Patron, The Honourable Alex Hawke MP, Member for Mitchell, The Honourable David Elliot MP, Member for Baulkham Hills, Swimming NSW President, Graham Towle OAM, Swimming NSW Board Member and Hills Life Member Mark Payne, along with other Hills Life Members, Marilyn Tobin, Melanie Williams, Alan Kerruish and Graham Taylor. We were also grateful for the well wishes and memories sent to us from Pauline and Graeme Allan. Special congratulations must be given to Sandra Richardson, who was awarded life membership of The Hills Swimming and Life Saving Club on 6 June 2017. This award is an acknowledgement of the 10 years of service that Sandra has given to our club, members and the sport of pool life saving. To our Club Captains – for life saving, Sarah and Jordan and Swimming – Annabelle and Aaron - thank you. Every time I have asked for your help, your immediate response was yes. Throughout the season you have led by example and have worked well together to ensure our younger members had a fun time at the Christmas Party and the 50th birthday celebration. Thank you for displaying such confident, leadership skills and contributing to our Annual Awards Presentation. Our swimming coaches, Clinton Camilleri, Jess Coetzee, Pat Teleki, Jess Payne, Diana Torosian and our life saving coaches, Andrew Bowden and Ben Fishburn, we are forever grateful for your commitment, guidance, support, patience and the many hours that you devote to each and every one of our athletes. Amanda Lenton, and the staff from Belgravia Leisure that operate the Waves Fitness and Aquatic Centre – we are continuously appreciative of the use you allow us to have of the facility – Tuesday and Friday evenings and Sunday morning. Thank you! Finally, thank you to the members of the Management Committee for your commitment and selfless service to our club this past year. It has been wonderful to work with such like-minded members. I can’t wait to see what the 2017/2018 season holds for The Hills Swimming and Life Saving Club. JUDY WARTMANN President

Swimming Secretary
The 2016 – 2017 season is drawing to a close and we are proud of all the achievements and
performances of all our members. Our members have done well at a variety of carnivals and
championships and as always are supported by family members working in a variety of support
roles. Numbers were a little lower than previous years but our returning and new members were
enthusiastic not only in completing their Royal Life Saving Award but also by competing at the

Life Saving Report
The 2016 – 2017 season is drawing to a close and we are proud of all the achievements and performances
of all our members. Our members have done well at a variety of carnivals and championships and as
always are supported by family members working in a variety of support roles. Numbers were a little
lower than previous years but our returning and new members were enthusiastic not only in completing
their Royal Life Saving Award but also by competing at the interclub carnivals and State Championships.

The club finished the 2016/2017 financial year with an overall membership growth of 11% from 31 March
2016.
Our 1st claim swimmer membership started the financial year with 138 x 1st claim members—aged 4
years +.
With the launch of Swimming Australia’s Optus Junior Dolphins Program, at the time of renewing
memberships, 8 of these swimmers, aged 7 years and under, were no longer required to pay any annual
membership fees and their membership status was transferred to that of an Optus Junior Dolphin.
We concluded the 2016/2017 Financial Year with 135 x 1st claim swimming members aged from 8 years
+, which was an overall increase of 5 members. Only 4 younger members, transferred during the winter
months to indoor aquatic facilities.
Life Saving membership held reasonably steady with 1 member transferring to Optus Junior Dolphin
status.
Combined Swimming and Life Saving Membership grew by 4 members throughout the 2016/2017
financial year.
Optus Junior Dolphins membership closed the 2016/2017 financial year at 36.
22 of the 36 members will have turned 8 years of age prior to membership renewal for the 2017/2018
season therefore will no longer be entitled to the privilege of free membership offered with the Optus
Junior Dolphins Program.
9 members will only be eligible for free membership for 1 more season, whilst the remaining 5 members
will still be eligible for free Optus Junior Dolphins membership for 2 more seasons.
