Robert W. Brightfelt, chair

Group President, Dade Behring, Inc. (retired) B.S. ‘65, M.S. ‘67 - Mechanical Engineering, University of Nebraska; MBA ‘70 - University of Georgia

Robert Brightfelt retired as Group President of Dade Behring, Inc., on December 31, 2002 after more than 36 years in the health care industry. He was a founder and member of the board of directors of Dade Behring, Inc., a $1.8 billion global clinical diagnostics company that develops, manufactures, sells and services equipment and test reagents for over 30,000 hospital laboratories.

He held positions of executive vice president and group president, with P&L responsibility for the Chemistry & Immunochemistry product lines, and operational responsibility for the company’s R&D, manufacturing, product management and marketing functions worldwide.

Following graduation, Brightfelt served 29 years with the DuPont Company. He held several executive positions in R&D, manufacturing, marketing, strategic planning and general management. During the last nine years with DuPont, he headed DuPont’s Global Diagnostics Strategic Business Unit.

Brightfelt served for four years as an officer and aeronautical engineer in the USAF, is a graduate of the Mahler general management program, and a graduate of executive management programs at Dartmouth University and the University of Virginia. He is a member of Beta Gamma Sigma, Sigma Xi, Sigma Tau, Pi Tau Sigma, Gamma Gamma, Phi Mu Epsilon and Phi Eta Sigma honor societies and is recognized in “Who’s Who among Top Executives.”

Brightfelt has worked as a consultant in the health care industry and serves as a member of the Chicago Architecture Foundation Auxiliary Board and as a trustee of the University of Nebraska Foundation. He is a past board member of Dade Behring, Inc., Molecular Bio Systems Inc., the Health Industry Manufacture’s Association and past board chairman of Junior Achievement of Delaware.

Pamela L. Dingman

Owner, Engineering Design Consultants / Lancaster County Engineer, NebraskaB.S. ‘91 - Civil Engineering, University of Nebraska-Lincoln

Pamela Dingman was one of the state’s first female owners of an engineering firm, Engineering Design Consultants. She was named Lancaster County Engineer in December 2013.

She is highly experienced in project management and design of civil engineering projects. She has designed detention and water quality

facilities since the early 1990s. This experience includes numerous water quality and detention ponds in addition to several channel stabilization projects. She also has extensive experience with subdivision and site design projects, including the design and preparation of plans, specifications, cost estimates and construction advertising, plus construction administration.

Dingman’s professional affiliations include Society of Women Engineers, National Society of Professional Engineers, American Business Women’s Association, Lincoln Independent Business Owners and Rotary International.

Roger M. Helgoth

President Emeritus, Kirkham MichaelB.S. ‘70 - Civil Engineering, University of Nebraska-Lincoln; M.S. ‘73 - Environmental Engineering, University of Nebraska

Roger Helgoth has 33 years of engineering experience, developing highly skilled approaches to environmental problem solving. His knowledge includes RCRA and hazardous waste sites and investigations; remedial action; municipal and industrial wastewater treatment; water supply, storage and treatment; hazardous waste remedial

investigation and feasibility studies, remedial design and remedial action; medical waste investigation and remediation; and solid waste management and environmental site assessments.

He also has vast experience with livestock waste management, watershed management, lake restoration and water resources and wetlands development.

Additionally, Helgoth has developed leadership in project management and quality management techniques. He is a diplomat with the Academy of Environmental Engineers. He maintains a detailed understanding and working knowledge of federal and state environmental regulations and laws, and is a certified Environmental Quality Auditor.

He is a registered professional engineer in Nebraska and Iowa.

James A. Hansen

North American Leader, Managed Services Business Development Group & Customer Technology, Alcatel Lucent B.S. ‘78 - Industrial Engineering, University of Nebraska-Lincoln; M.S. - Industrial Engineering, University of Missouri

At Alcatel Lucent, James Hansen’s team is responsible for the pursuit of new customers relative to outsourcing, resource augmentation, MVM, and other large service offerings. His team also provide technology planning support to the customer teams.

Hansen previously served as senior vice president,

Network Services, for Embarq and Sprint’s Local Telecommunications Division. He was responsible for all planning, design, engineering, provisioning, operations, technology evaluation and installation. He held other senior management positions at Sprint, including vice president of Planning and assistant vice president of Engineering. He also led two re-engineering teams and has served as a director of National Engineering Standards, Regional Planning, Systems Development and Regional Engineering.

Prior to joining Sprint, Hansen held various management positions with Northwestern Bell, AT&T and Proctor & Gamble. He is a registeredp rofessional engineer.

Dennis C. Hirschbrunner

Executive Vice President and Director of Marketing, HDR (retired)B.S. ‘70 - Civil Engineering, University of Nebraska-Lincoln

Dennis Hirschbrunner has been in the consulting engineering field for over 35 years. He is a registered professional engineer in Nebraska and Iowa.

Hirschbrunner is a member of Chi Epsilon Civil Engineering Honorary Fraternity, National Society of Professional Engineers (where he was selected the National Young

Engineer of the Year in 1980), American Society of Civil Engineers, American Academy of Environmental Engineers, and served as a board member for both American Water Works Association and the Water Environment Federation.

For 10 years he served as the Professional Engineer Representative on the Nebraska Board of Health. He is also an active member of several other professional and technical societies.

He was born, raised and still resides in Columbus, Nebraska. He and his wife, Terri, have six grown daughters and nine grandchildren.

Fred Hunzeker

President and CEO, Tenaska Marketing GroupB.S. - Mechanical Engineering, University of Nebraska-Lincoln

Fred Hunzeker oversees operations of the umbrella group of Tenaska’s energy marketing companies, including the natural gas marketing companies Tenaska Marketing Ventures and Tenaska Marketing Canada (together TMV), fuels and agricultural commodities marketer Tenaska Commodities, LLC and liquefied natural gas

fuels developer and marketer Tenaska NG Fuels, LLC (TNG Fuels). He is a member of Tenaska’s Board of Stakeholders and the company’s four-person Executive Committee.

Hunzeker helped oversee the inception of the Tenaska Marketing Group, which encompasses the Tenaska entities involved in supply chain management of energy and agricultural commodities, in 2013.

As president of TMV, he oversees one of the largest daily marketing operations in the North American natural gas market, with TMV procuring, transporting or managing 2.5 trillion cubic feet of gas in 2013, or approximately 9.5 percent of the total U.S. natural gas consumption.

Hunzeker has been a key executive at TMV since its inception in 1991 and has served as president since 1995. He was responsible for building the company’s Gas Supply Group and Risk Management Group before being named president.

Prior to joining Tenaska, he was employed by Houston Pipeline Company, responsible for the marketing of pipeline transportation services, storage services and gas commodity sales. He also worked in oil and natural gas exploration at Texas Oil and Gas Corp., before moving into the company’s natural gas production and pipeline gathering system marketing groups.

Kenneth E. Jones

Founder, Globe Wireless (retired) B.S. - Chemical Engineering ‘68, University of Nebraska-Lincoln; MBA ‘74, Harvard University

After college, Ken Jones served in the United States Navy from 1968-72. He was a deck officer on the USS Forrest Sherman and was Executive Officer of the USS Tatnuck, a fleet tug. His final assignment was Commanding Officer of the USS Flagstaff, the Navy’s first operational hydrofoil.

Jones started at Touche Ross & Co. certified public

accountants in San Francisco. Two years later he joined Hills Bros. Coffee as chief financial officer, where he gained substantial experience in international finance and Latin America. His first entrepreneurial activity began in 1980 when he became CEO of Clausen-Koch Company, a start up refrigerated canned meat company.

The break up of the Bell Telephone system in 1983 triggered Jones’ interest in telecommunications as a growth industry. He formed Automated Call Processing Corporation (ACP) in 1983, which spawned many of today’s voice response and voice mail applications. It drew the attention of MCI Communications first as an investor and was ultimately sold to MCI in 1990. ACP was an early adaptor of digital signal processing (DSP) technology and spawned Ditech Communications, which Jones founded in 1990 and took public in 1999. Globe Wireless was also an outgrowth of DSP technology. Globe Wireless uses a global network of digital high frequency radio stations to provide communications to ships at sea.

He is married to Kim Lauridsen (JD ’71, University of Nebraska) and they have one son, Zachary. They live on the California coast but spend much of their summer at Okoboji, Iowa and ski season at Park City, Utah. He is president of the Cabrillo Unified School District Governing Board, which serves the coast-side south of San Francisco.

Greg Hyslop

Vice President and General Manager, Boeing Research & TechnologyB.S. - Electrical Engineering, University of Nebraska-Lincoln; M.S. - Mathematics, University of Nebraska; D.S. - Washington University in St. Louis

Greg Hyslop leads a team of nearly 4,000 engineers, scientists, technicians and technologists who create and collaborate with R&D partners around the world to provide innovative system solutions and technologies to solve the aerospace industry’s toughest challenges.

Named to this position in February 2013, Hyslop has oversight of operations at five research centers in the U.S., including Alabama, California, Missouri, South Carolina and Washington, as well as six research centers in Australia, Brazil, China, Europe, India and Russia.

Hyslop also serves as chief engineer for Engineering, Operations & Technology, the parent organization for BR&T. In 2015, he assumed the additional role as enterprise engineering leader, partnering with chief engineers for other Boeing business units to ensure One Boeing solutions that support programs across the enterprise.

Prior to his BR&T role, Hyslop served as vice president and general manager of Boeing Strategic Missile & Defense Systems (SM&DS) for four years. He also has held Boeing leadership posts with the Ground-based Midcourse Defense program, the Airborne Laser program and the Special Projects-Dallas team. In addition, he supported a number of cruise missile programs including Tomahawk, Harpoon, Standoff Land Attack Missile (SLAM) and Standoff Land Attack Missile – Expanded Response (SLAM-ER) since joining the McDonnell Douglas Astronautics Company, now part of Boeing, in 1982 as a guidance and control engineer.

Joseph R. Lempka

President, Kiewit Building Group Inc.B.S. ‘84 - Construction Management, University of Nebraska-Lincoln; MBA, University of Nebraska

As president of Kiewit Building Group Inc., Joe Lempka is responsible for Kiewit’s building construction work throughout the United States.

He is also a licensed professional engineer in the State of Nebraska. Lempka has been involved in such notable projects as the Joslyn Art Museum, Strategic Air

and Space Museum and the Henry Doorly Zoo Deserts of the World Dome and the TD Ameritrade Park baseball stadium.

Lempka is a member of the Board of Trustees for Goodwill Industries, Inc., a board member of the Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce and serves as chair of the Building and Planning Committee for the St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Omaha.

Richard L. McNeel

President/CEO, LORD Corporation (retired)B.S. ‘69 - Chemical Engineering, University of Chicago

Richard “Rick” McNeel joined LORD Corporation in 2002 as president and CEO. LORD Corporation is a private company founded in 1924 and is headquartered in Cary, North Carolina. LORD sells adhesives, coatings, electronic chemicals, and mechanical and electromechanical parts that control noise and vibration. Global markets served include automotive, aerospace and

defense, general industrial and electronics.

McNeel started his 33-year career in the chemical industry with Amoco Chemical, Amoco Corporation, and BP Amoco, where he held a variety of positions. Before leaving BP Amoco he was group vice president for BP Amoco Chemical in London, U.K.; prior to that he was group vice president, Chemical Intermediates Amoco Chemicals; group vice president, Polymers, Amoco Chemicals; and president, Amoco Performance Products, Inc. He retired from BP on January 1, 2002.

McNeel is vice chair of the Greater Raleigh Chamber of Commerce Transportation Planning Committee, and serves on the U.S. Chamber of Commerce International Policy Committee and on the Board of Governors of the Aerospace Industries Association.

Kevin Schneider

Cline, Williams, Wright, Johnson and Oldfather, L.L.P. B.S. ‘85 - Mechanical Engineering, University of Nebraska-Lincoln; J.D. ‘87, University of Nebraska

Kevin Schneider’s practice sections at the Lincoln-based law firm include business/corporate/partnerships and litigation. His emphasis areas include construction litigation contracts and law, insurance coverage, personal injury, patents and trademarks, business entities, and member and shareholder litigation.

His professional affiliations include the Nebraska State Bar Association, Lincoln Bar Association, Texas State Bar Association, and EIT. Board memberships and leadership roles include serving as co-founder of Friends of the College of Engineering, the Nebraska Game and Parks Foundation, the Nebraska Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Aurora Development Corporation, and the Arthritis Foundation.

Norman Newhouse

Vice President for Technology, Hexagon LincolnB.S. ‘73 - Mechanical Engineering, University of Nebraska-Lincoln; M.S. ‘75, Ph.D. ‘84 - Engineering Mechanics, University of Nebraska

Norm Newhouse has more than 40 years of experience in advanced composites design, analysis, manufacture and testing, working for Hexagon Lincoln and predecessor companies (Brunswick Composites, Lincoln Composites, General Dynamics Armament and Technical Products). His responsibilities have included oversight of the company’s

research activities, engineering laboratory, and intellectual property.

Newhouse was principle investigator at Hexagon Lincoln for several Department of Energy grants related to composite pressure vessels for containing compressed hydrogen and compressed natural gas fuel containers. He has been awarded six U.S. patents and has several patents pending.

Newhouse has 25-plus years of experience supporting the development of national and international standards for high pressure composite vessels and alternate fuel vehicle containers. He headed a U.S. delegation to ISO TC58, Gas Cylinders, and ISO TC58/SC3, Gas Cylinder Design.

He has also been chair of the UNL Mechanical Engineering Advisory Board and has served on this committee for several years. He is a registered professional engineer.

Ronald F. Taylor

Principal, Civil Group L.L.C.B.S. ‘77 - Electrical Engineering, University of Nebraska-Lincoln

Ronald Taylor retired in 2007 as general manager of the Integrated Space Systems Division at General Dynamics. He had P&L responsibility for integrating end-to-end communication solutions for mission critical applications, including high performance satellite design and integration; satellite communication; satellite operations; and specialized payloads and subsystems.

Taylor served in Vietnam and received an honorable discharge from the U.S. Navy, then earned his bachelor’s degree with honors in electrical engineering from UNL. He joined Motorola in 1977, launching a 30-year career in aerospace and defense with numerous assignments of increasing responsibilities, including 24 years with Motorola and six years with General Dynamics after an acquisition of Motorola’s Defense Business in 2001.

In addition to pursuing graduate studies at Arizona State University, Taylor is a graduate of the executive program at the University of Virginia’s Darden Graduate School. He is a member of Tau Beta Pi and Eta Kappa Nu honor societies and served as a governor-appointed member of the Arizona Space Commission from 1991 through 2005.

Donald R. Voelte, Jr.

Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, Seven West Media Limited (retired)B.S. ‘75 - Civil Engineering, University of Nebraska-Lincoln

Donald Voelte, Jr., BSc, FTSE, FAICD, served as chief executive officer and managing director of Seven West Media Limited since June 2012. Previously, he served as chief executive officer and managing director of Woodside Petroleum Ltd., from 2004-11. He was an executive vice president of Atlantic Richfield Co.

(a/k/a, ARCO Chemical Company), as well as chief executive officer and president of Chroma Energy, Inc. He served as senior vice president of Corporate Planning at Atlantic Richfield Company (also known as ARCO Chemical Company) and at Lyondell Chemical Worldwide Inc.

Voelte worked for Mobil Corporation for 22 years, serving as an executive vice president of Mobil Corporation and president of Mobil’s New Exploration and Producing Ventures and Global Exploration from January 1994 to April 1997. He was vice president and general manager of U.S. Marketing and Supply/Logistics of Mobil Corporation from 1992-94. He also was general manager of Corporate Planning and Planning manager for U.S. Exploration and Producing at Mobil Corporation.

Voelte has been non-executive chairman at Nexus Energy Limited since October 2012. He serves as a director of Woodside Energy Ltd. and as director of ARCO Chemical Company. He served as director of Chroma Energy, Inc. and as director of Woodside Petroleum Ltd. from April 2004 to May 30, 2011. He also served as director of Vastar Resources, Inc.

Jeff Zvolanek

Engineering and sales, National Standard Co–Weld wire division; Co-owner, Desert Warriors Land Development Co.B.S. ‘86 - Industrial Engineering, University of Nebraska-Lincoln

Previously, Jeff Zvolanek was owner of Industrial Air Specialists from 1988-1997, conducting air quality audits and helping industrial accounts solve indoor air quality issues. He sold the business to Linweld Inc. in1997. He then worked until 2001 as an engineer and division manager for Linweld

Inc., in the Clean Air and Technology Division.

In 2002, Zvolanek was a graduate student and an extension engineer in the Pollution Prevention Program with the UNL Biological Systems Engineering department.

Since October 2002, he has worked within engineering and sales for National Standard Co–Weld wire division. Since 2001, he is half owner in a land development company, purchasing and selling commercial properties in the Las Vegas area.

Kenneth P. West

Principal, DLR Group, Inc.B.S. - Architectural Studies, University of Nebraska-Lincoln

Ken West, AIA, is a principal for DLR Group in Omaha. He has worked there for over 27 years. His responsibilities and experience have expanded from a structural technician, to staff architect, to project architect, to project manager, project leader, and Omaha Office director. In addition to his leadership roles, West is involved in business development efforts in the

Midwest region.

As his leadership responsibilities at DLR have grown, so has his personal involvement in many community organizations and numerous University of Nebraska Boards and committees, including: University of Nebraska Architectural Engineering Advisory Board, the University of Nebraska President’s Advisory Committee, The Durham School Advisory Board, UNO Athletics, Maverick Council Executive Board, UNL Architectural Engineering Industry Advisory Committee, and the UNO Strategic Planning Committee.

As the recipient of the 2007 Maverick Corporate Citizen Award, his commitment to the University of Nebraska is solid.

BIOLOGICAL SYSTEMS ENGINEERING

John Davis

Vice President of Engineering, Reinke Mfg. (retired)B.S. ’73 - Agricultural Engineering, University of Nebraska-Lincoln

John Davis’ college education was interrupted by military service. As a result, he experienced the university both as a traditional and nontraditional student.

Employed by Reinke Mfg. in Deshler, he served as V.P. of Engineering until retiring in January 2015. During his time there, he saw the evolution of a

small regional manufacturing company into a world-class producer of mechanized irrigation and transportation equipment. Agricultural irrigation product development was his primary focus as center pivot irrigation technology developed through the years. Starting in the mid-80s, Reinke Mfg. began manufacturing over-the-road semi-trailers and container chassis. He also supervised and participated in the development of these products.

Since retiring, John and his wife, Linda, reside in Lincoln. He is a registered professional engineer.

Matt Helmers

Dean’s Professor, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences / Professor, Department of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering, Iowa State University B.S. ’95, Iowa State University; M.S. ‘97, Virginia Tech; Ph.D. ‘03, University of Nebraska

Matt Helmers has been on the faculty at Iowa State University since 2003.

He is the associate chair for Research and Extension in the Department of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering and has a research and extension program focused on agricultural water quality issues.

Kelly Brunkhorst

Executive Director, Nebraska Corn Board and Nebraska Corn Growers AssociationB.S. ‘86 - Mechanized Systems Management – Business, University of Nebraska-Lincoln

Kelly Brunkhorst was raised on a diversified grain and livestock operation that is still operated by his parents south of Wauneta, Nebraska. Following graduation from UNL, he continued in his enjoyment of agriculture by managing a feed mill for Bartlett Foods, a private swine operation, then becoming a district sales manager for Crow’s Hybrids.

Following a job with the Nebraska Grain and Feed Association, Brunkhorst joined the staff of the Nebraska Corn Board, where he was director of Research for 10 years prior to becoming executive director of both the Nebraska Corn Board and Nebraska Corn Growers Association.

Brunkhorst volunteers back to agriculture by serving on the boards of Alliance for the Future of Agriculture in Nebraska, Nebraska 4-H Foundation and Nebraska Agriculture Leadership Council.

Timothy Carmann

Tim Carmann is a business development engineer with DuPont, where he is responsible for technical sales, licensing and marketing of clean technologies to global customers. Prior to this role, he served in operations and new technology commercialization roles with DuPont.

He started his career in technology development at ExxonMobil. He is also currently pursuing a Master of Business Administration degree from Washington University in St. Louis. Carmann is a member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers.

Paul Brandt, P.E.

At Burns & McDonnell Engineering Company in Kansas City, Brandt works on projects within the energy sector, with a specific emphasis in air pollution regulations, water/wastewater regulations, and associated control technologies.

His experience includes the design, construction, and

start-up phases of major retrofit work at various power plants. This work has included design and installation of: selective catalytic reduction reactors for removal of nitrous oxides from boiler flue gas, lime and limestone flue gas desulfurization scrubbers, pulse jet fabric filters, reverse osmosis water treatment systems, and chemical dosing systems for water treatment.

He has experience in managing EPC and Owner’s Engineer contracts, as well as developing regulatory and optimization studies for clients in Missouri, Kansas, Florida, Texas, Delaware, Iowa, Minnesota, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and Kentucky. He is licensed as a professional engineer in the State of Missouri.

Paul and his wife, Anne, both grew up in Nebraska and now reside in Overland Park, Kansas with their daughter, Gianna, and son, Oliver.

Michael D. Cloeter

Michael Cloeter joined Dow in 1987 in the Epoxy business with responsibilities for a variety of process R&D related to reaction kinetics, catalysis, and crystallization. In 2002, he moved to his current role in the Engineering Sciences - Fluid Mechanics & Mixing Discipline, where he leads the experimental

program at the Freeport site.

His specialties include physical modeling of industrial processes that are studied using laser diagnostics and visualization methods. Globally-leveraged capabilities include testing of turbulent reacting flows, stirred tank mixing, static mixing, spray technology, and various multiphase systems. He consults with design teams on a wide variety of business technologies, mentors young engineers, and has authored over 100 internal R&D reports

Recognitions include the “Excellence in Science” award given by the Dow Gulf Coast Scientists organization and multiple Technology Center Awards given for projects that meet economic and waste reduction thresholds. He also leads an internal process mixing class given annually to design engineers and researchers. Cloeter is certified as a Six Sigma black belt for both MAIC and DFSS and is a practitioner of systematic innovation.

He is a member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the Institute for Liquid Atomization and Spray Systems (ILASS) and the American Chemical Society.

Scott Harmeier

At Archer Daniels Midland, Scott Harmeier leads a team responsible for applying optimization technology to various process operations. He has been an engineer at ADM for over 18 years working in a variety of process engineering and process control roles.

Prior to his current position, Harmeier was a member of ADM’s corporate engineering group, where he developed company standards, supported existing facilities, and worked on construction and commissioning of new plants.

During the first half of his career, he led the process control group at an ADM corn plant in Clinton, Iowa focusing primarily on plant modernization.

Patrick T. Hurlbut

Hurlbut is a board certified orthopaedic surgeon. He completed his residency at the University of Vermont in 1993, and a fellowship in Hand and Upper Extremity Surgery in 1994 at the University of Minnesota. He subsequently earned a Certificate of Added Qualification in Hand Surgery from the American Board of

Orthopedic Surgery.

Hurlbut has been admitted to the American Society for Surgery of the Hand (ASSH), an elite professional society of hand surgeons. Prairie Orthopaedic & Plastic Surgery, PC and his team use the most advanced treatment options for recovery of maximum mobility, strength, and return of function. His passion has been the diagnosis and treatment of shoulder, elbow and hand injuries but he also continues to practice in many areas of orthopaedics, including total joint replacement and knee arthroscopy.

His membership in professional organizations include the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, American Society for Surgery of the Hand, Nebraska Orthopaedic Society, American Medical Association, Nebraska Medical Association, and the Lancaster County Medical Association.

He has served on the faculties of Chemical Engineering at North Carolina State University and the University of Texas at Austin prior to his position at Georgia Tech. He served as editor-in-chief of the Journal of Membrane Science from 1991-2008.

Angela Lueking

At Penn State University, Angela Lueking teaches an interdisciplinary green engineering design course at Penn State and incorporates consideration of energy and environmental challenges into her teaching of core engineering courses.

She is a past Marie Curie International Fellow for

the study of novel materials for sustainable energy applications, and has authored over 40 peer-reviewed research articles in adsorption, catalysis, and surface science.

Prior to her academic career, Lueking worked in industry as an environmental engineer, where she led several environmental initiatives including chemical management, air-permitting, and environmental training.

She is also a visiting scientist at the National Science Foundation.

Sarah Olson

Sarah Olson began her professional engineering career in 1998 as a development compounder for Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company in Lincoln. During her time at Goodyear, she held various positions of increasing responsibility in product and process development.

Olson joined Federal-Mogul’s Smithville, Tennessee location as a product development engineer and formulator for brake pads in 2004. Shortly after, she advanced to Application Engineer & Program manager and transferred to Plymouth, Michigan where she still resides. In 2008, Olson was promoted to received a promotion to her current position. Her division develops, tests, manufactures and markets brake pads throughout the region.

Sarah is a member of the Society of Automotive Engineers, a mentor for the 3G’s young girl’s STEM group, and has served on the UNL Chemical Engineering Advisory Board since 2003.

Justin Vala

Prior to joining Tenaska in 2008, Vala spent five years with ExxonMobil Chemical at sites in Baytown and Beaumont, Texas. Responsibilities included process simulation, pilot plant management, and plant operations support.

Melissa A. (Buechler) Ver Meer

Melissa Ver Meer is a technical manager - Materials Engineering at the NNSA’s Kansas City Plant, which is managed and operated by Honeywell FM&T. Her work has ranged from polymer synthesis, thermal analysis, elastomer compounding, polymer failure analysis, high temperature polymers and nanocomposites.

She joined Honeywell FM&T in 2012 after spending nearly 10 years at Schlumberger in polymer engineering and management.

Her professional associations include the American Chemical Society, the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the Society of Women Engineers.

Scott Gilliland is a founding owner and, since its inception in March 1997, the managing member of lnfraStructure, LLC. Gilliland is an engineer and project manager with a variety of bridge, general transportation, and other public/private infrastructure related experience.

He has more than 25 years of management, engineering design, construction engineering, and inspection related experience. He has worked on and coordinated design team activities on portions of several major public works projects, including the Central Artery/Third Harbor Tunnel Project in Boston, the Cypress Freeway Reconstruction in Sacramento, California, and the I-80/I-480 Kennedy Interchange Reconstruction in Omaha. He has served as the principal in charge on many of his company’s recent projects.

Steven Goans

In his role as deputy director at NDEQ, Steve Goans is responsible for implementation of Federal Clean Water Act requirements and State of Nebraska water programs. Goans has been with the NDEQ for more than 27 years, working mostly in water programs with occasional special projects in Air and Land divisions.

He led development of the Assessing Wastewater Infrastructure Needs (AWIN) project, which helps identify sustainability risks for communities. AWIN is used to make decisions on design, timing, and enforcement as NDEQ administer environmental requirements. Previous to NDEQ, Goans worked for a private contractor on military projects around the country.

Goans is a Professional Civil Engineer registered in the State of Nebraska. He is a member of the Nebraska Water Environment Federation and active in the national Association of Clean Water Administrators and the Environmental Council of States.

Dale Jacobson

Dale Jacobson is a registered professional engineer with over 40 years of engineering experience in water, wastewater, water resources, ground water, solid waste and hazardous waste projects.

In addition to project work, he has served as an officer of consulting firms, managed business development

activities of consulting firms, and served on the board of directors of several privately held corporations.

Jacobson has been active in numerous national and international professional and technical organizations throughout his career. Some of his current activities include serving on the Board of Governors of the World Water Council (WWC), the International Council of the American Water Works Association (AWWA), and the International Committee of the Water Environment Federation.

He served the Water Environment Federation (WEF) on numerous committees and as an officer for five years, culminating as president. He has served on many committees of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and the Environmental & Water Resources Institute (EWRI) of ASCE. He is a past president of EWRI and also served on the Board of Civil Engineering Certification, Inc., an organization that sponsors specialty certification programs for civil engineers.

He has served on the Board of Directors of the American Academy of Environmental Engineers (AAEE), the American Academy of Water Resources Engineers (AAWRE) and the Founder’s Council of the Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI), the proponent organization of the annual World Water Week and the Stockholm Water Prize.

Mark Lafferty

Mark Lafferty has been in the concrete industry since 1973, specializing in the design and production of precast/prestressed concrete. He started his career with General Testing Laboratory, where he developed his quest for quality and his “hands-on” knowledge of the many uses for and behavior of concrete products. Since then, Lafferty has been

involved in the structural design of various types of concrete (using both cast-in-place and precast concrete) and steel structures.

In 2000, he became directly responsible for the four divisions – Structural Precast, Concrete Pipe and Rebar fabrication, and Construction Materials Warehouse – that made up Concrete Industries at that time. In 2012, he was involved in a three-person team that obtained a patent for an insulated wall panel production method. This production method used a special fiberglass tie (Nu-Tie) that was developed at the University of Nebraska. This resulted in a new company, of which Concrete Industries is a one-third partner that Lafferty manages.

In 2012, NEBCO Inc. acquired Apollo Steel and in 2013, this company was added to the Concrete Industries group of companies. Lafferty is an active member of the Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute, PCI-Midwest, and Prestressed Concrete Association of Nebraska. He is a Licensed Professional Engineer in Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri, and Colorado.

Reed A. Miller

Since Reed Miller founded the Kearney, Nebraska firm in 1976, it has steadily grown to employ a diverse staff of engineers, architects, registered land surveyors, geologists, grant administrators, planners, computer programmers and technicians.

Miller is a Registered Professional Engineer in the

states of Nebraska, Colorado and Kansas, and also holds Class A City Street Superintendent and County Highway Superintendent licenses.

He is a member of the American Water Works Association, Water Environment Federation, and is on the Advisory Council on Public Water Supply.

Nancy Pridal

Nancy Pridal is an operations leader with widespread experience in project planning and management, client relationship management, strategic planning, geographic expansion and integration, systems analysis, and leadership development.

She is the principal-in-charge of the firm’s Kansas City

office. Bringing cross-functional groups together to build consensus is a key strength of Pridal’s. She has contributed to Lamp Rynearson’s growth and success through development of new programs and initiatives that expanded both the organization’s and employees’ capabilities.

Pridal’s broad project experience ranges from successfully managing complex redevelopment and land development projects to leading public outreach projects and facilitating community design workshops and public meetings. Project sustainability (both internal and external) are drivers and she is a certified Envisiontm Sustainability Professional (ENV SP).

Daryoush Razavian

Daryoush Razavian leads the Rail Market Sector at Olsson Associates. He is responsible for developing and implementing strategic goals for providing and expanding cradle-to-grave engineering and associated consulting services to railroad clients. He has provided technical leadership in both academic and consulting

arenas for more than 35 years on multidisciplinary projects involving planning, analyzing, and designing water resources systems. He has directed, managed, and conducted more than 2,500 projects related to water resources engineering and management throughout the Central/Western U.S.

His project experience includes conducting hydrologic and hydraulic evaluations as well as permitting for railroad and highway bridges/culverts, restoring lakes and streams, performing comprehensive stormwater management and flood mitigation planning, handling floodplain management and flood control, developing watershed management plans for improving water quality, conducting stream and lake sedimentations studies and providing technical support of water rights and drainage litigation cases.

His professional activities include serving in a variety of positions at the Nebraska Section of ASCE, including a stint as the Section President. Razavian is a professional engineer and a professional hydrologist (certified by the American Institute of Hydrology) and was recognized by the American Academy of Water Resources Engineers Board of Trustees as having met the requirements for the Diplomate, Water Resources Engineer (D.WRE) credential.

Kyle Schneweis

Director, Nebraska Department of RoadsB.S. ’98 - Civil Engineering, University of North Dakota

Kyle Schneweis was appointed by Governor Pete Ricketts as director of the Nebraska Department of Roads on June 8, 2015. Schneweis brings nearly 20 years of experience in the transportation field to the position. His diverse background in civil engineering, transportation policy, and private sector consulting, provide a unique

perspective to the department.

Schneweis began his professional career at the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT). At KDOT, he led the update of the state’s long-range transportation plan and staffed the governor’s Blue Ribbon Transportation Task Force. Schneweis was appointed Chief of Government Affairs, where he helped shepherd the legislative passage of an $8.3 billion transportation program.

After a dozen years with KDOT, Schneweis joined High Street Consulting, a public policy firm out of Washington, D.C., where he assisted more than a dozen state DOT clients on a variety of strategic planning and policy initiatives.

As director, Schneweis has traveled the state getting to know staff and working together to shape the future of Nebraska’s transportation system. Although he spent much of the last two decades in Kansas, he is not entirely unfamiliar with Nebraska. His wife, Laurel, grew up in Lincoln; they have two toddler boys, Mazlo and Karver.

Matthew Tondl

Matt Tondl is currently responsible for the 400 engineering staff at HDR serving clients in Nebraska and Iowa. He has more than 30 years of design and management experience. His technical expertise is in transportation planning, design, financing, and construction.

Tondl’s experience includes major river crossing projects, rail grade separation projects, system interchanges, and major urban arterial projects. He was the lead traffic engineer for the Denver International Airport landside roadway system, and has been involved with numerous major planning studies that have improved multimodal transportation in the Midwest.

Tondl has served as president of the American Council of Engineering Companies of Nebraska. He also has served on several Transportation Research Board Committees.

Dan Thiele

Dan Thiele has a broad background in geotechnical, material, environmental, and structural engineering with over 30 years of experience. Geotech is a specialty engineering firm practicing in the fields of geotechnical, material, and environmental engineering with over 60 employees spread across two offices.

Thiele is a licensed professional engineer in Nebraska and 24 other states. He serves on several civic and professional boards, including president of the Nebraska Society of Professional Engineers Education Foundation, president of the Professional Engineers Coalition, past president of Sarpy County Economic Development Corporation, and former chairman of the Board of Skutt Catholic High School.

Durham’s diverse skills, education, and various leadership opportunities have shaped his career, where he has built many successful teams to solve problems using software. In addition to his civilian career, he served in the Air National Guard for 21 years, retiring at the rank of Major in 2006. Durham has also been an adjunct associate professor of The Raikes School at UNL since 2013.

A native of Omaha, Alvine is a licensed professional electrical engineer in 42 states. He has led the firm,

founded by his father in 1961, from 18 employees to a team of over 130.

Alvine’s passion for the engineering profession has driven his leadership of Alvine and Associates, and in the engineering industry at large. This has led to innovations in the industry, including recognizing the need for engineering services for low-voltage systems, such as telecommunications, security and access control, and audiovisual systems. Over 15 years ago, Alvine and Associates launched IP Design Group, a low-voltage engineering division. This division has grown to nearly 20 professionals, with a national footprint serving a wide range of clientele and market sectors.

As the granddaughter and daughter of engineers – H.H. Henningson, who founded Henningson Engineering, which later became HDR, and Charles W. Durham, former CEO of HDR – Lynne Boyer grew up around engineering. Due to her love of children, however, her career choice was elementary education.

Following her marriage in 1969 to John Boyer, she taught school, raised two sons: David and Michael, and became a “professional volunteer.”

Over the years, Boyer has served on the Boards of Directors of Children’s Hospital and Medical Center, Children’s Hospital Foundation, Nebraska Arthritis Foundation, All Our Kids/Partnership For Our Kids, Project Harmony, Nebraska Humane Society Friends Forever, Salvation Army, and Girls, Inc. in Omaha; and Desert Caballeros Western Museum in Wickenburg, Arizona.

She currently serves on the Advisory Board of Completely Kids and the Board of Directors of Joslyn Art Museum, Bellevue University, Bellevue University Foundation, Research Nebraska, and Nebraska Coalition for Lifesaving Cures.

Guenther Dziuvenis is based out of Kansas City, Missouri. His 30-year career with Johnson Controls, which began after graduation from college, has given him the opportunity to work with numerous clients on complex systems projects located throughout the United States. commissioning, and ongoing operations/maintenance.

In November 2007, at a worldwide leadership conference held in Frankfurt, Germany, Johnson Controls, Inc., presented Dziuvenis with the 2007 Chairman’s Award for Leadership Excellence. Nancy Melby oversees operations for 130 architecture and engineering staff within the Omaha office of LEO A DALY. She coordinates the day-to-day operational management of professional services, including project delivery, technical processes, financial planning, resource allocation, and human resource matters. She focuses on broad office activities

including short- and long-term financial and managerial planning, reporting, and forecasting; recruitment and retention; implementation and overall quality of policies, programs, and practices; and assessing present/future needs, trends, issues, and opportunities for continued growth of the Omaha office.

Prior to her appointment as operations director, Melby served as a team operations lead, managing a multidisciplinary team of architects, engineers, interior designers, and planners. She directed this team responsible for the production of design and engineering documents for a variety of project types and clients, serving multiple market sectors, including international, higher education, local/state/federal government, and corporate commercial.

As a structural engineer, Melby has broad experience in structural design and has provided construction contract administration services for numerous projects. Her experience includes analysis of a wide range of loading events including seismic, hurricane, blast, and progressive collapse.

She is a registered Structural Engineer in two states and is a registered Professional Engineer in three states. Melby is an active member of the Structural Engineers Association of Nebraska chapter and serves as a member of their Board of Directors.

Mike Moran

Executive Vice President and Director of Professional Services, HDRB.S. ’84 – Architecture, University of Nebraska-Lincoln

Mike Moran has been a member of HDR’s leadership team since 1999. Prior to being named director of Professional Services, he had been director of Operations for HDR’s domestic offices and responsible for operations for over 20 offices based in the United States and 900 staff.

From 1999 to 2005, Mike was managing principal of the

Dallas, Texas office, during which time the office became a model of performance for HDR in several areas: reduction of project losses, improved profitability and project quality, increased employee morale, increased training/mentoring opportunities and greater market diversification.

Moran still maintains some of the same clients assigned to him over 28 years ago when he first joined HDR. His passion for service and quality has proven to be of great value to clients and projects, as he becomes a key part of the team to assure quality and success. His leadership skills are especially critical in his role as manager for the recently completed Parkland Hospital project. The largest new health care project in the United States, Parkland includes over 2.7 million square feet and a project budget of $1.3 billion.

As director of Professional Services, Moran oversees building engineering, interiors, consulting, equipment planning, specifications, quality, practice innovation, and oversight of the firm’s largest projects.

Bernard J. Gehrki

Bernie Gehrki was a senior vice president and operations director with HDR overseeing operations for 250 architecture staff in five locations within the central U.S. Based in Omaha, he has been in the architecture profession for 38 years, 27 of those with HDR. In his previous position, he was responsible for recruiting and retaining staff, and maintaining quality

in all aspects of business performance within the region, including client relationships, project delivery, contracts and financial results.

Experienced in the design and construction of healthcare, educational and commercial projects, Gehrki’s background includes schematic design, design development, and construction administration services. A registered architect in 17 states, he is a designated member of the National Council of Architectural Registration Board (NCARB).

Throughout his tenure at HDR, he has led a multitude of project teams as a principal-in-charge, project manager and healthcare planner, and has been instrumental in managing long-standing relationships and projects for legacy HDR clients.

Staying connected to the heart of the architecture profession, he is involved in training project managers and enjoys presenting on industry topics, along with teaching a professional practice course at UNL. A published author, he has shared his knowledge of healthcare design and delivery in several publications.

Gehrki remains passionate about the essence of architecture and his particular passion is conceptualizing and sketching architectural details. Stephanie Guy is a licensed mechanical engineer with more than 10 years of experience designing energy-efficient mechanical systems for a variety of building types. With both a local and national client base whose buildings have varying system demands, she has a broad understanding of industry best practices and a proven history of applying

engineering innovation to all of her projects.

As a LEED Accredited Professional, she is passionate about introducing sustainable design solutions to her clients and applying them to her projects as appropriate – even if the facility is not being considered for formal LEED certification.

Guy is active outside of work: she is the mother of four daughters and stays involved in both professional and community organizations, including the local Nebraska ASHRAE chapter. She was instrumental in organizing the Nebraska AEI (Architectural Engineering Institute) Chapter – one of the first industry chapters in the country.

At a national level, she has served on the AEI Board of Governors since 2012 and currently holds the position of president elect. She will be the National AEI President for the 2017-18 year. She also volunteers as a junior high track coach at a local school since 2008.

of experience in structural engineering, construction administration and project management for a broad range of project types throughout the U.S. and the world.

Reynolds has worked with a variety of materials to design structures for a variety of building types that span many markets including government buildings, office buildings, museums, hotels, entertainment facilities, university laboratory, housing and classroom buildings. Her experience is not limited to only buildings and includes bridges and other structures for stadiums, cemeteries, parks. She also has extensive experience in seismic analysis, blast protection and progressive collapse.

In addition to developing her staff, Reynolds demonstrates a commitment to the Structural Engineering profession as a contributor to Chapter 1 – Element A: Substructure in the 11th edition of the Architectural Graphic Standards and as a volunteer with NCEES, writing and scoring the National Structural Engineering Licensing Exam. The Structural Engineers Association of Michigan has recognized her dedication by naming her the 2011 Structural Engineer of the Year.

Scott Pfeiffer

Partner, Threshold Acoustics, LLCB.S. ’92 – Physics (with honors in music), Moravian College

Scott Pfeiffer’s path in architectural acoustics began from the stage – from as early as third grade to roles in high school musicals, and on to recitals as part of his music education at Moravian College. To provide a foundation for an understanding of acoustics, he pursued a Bachelor of Science in Physics. These interests

culminated in graduate participation as a guest student at the Acoustics Laboratory at the Technical University of Denmark.

For nearly two decades, Pfeiffer participated in virtually every aspect of the acoustical consulting profession. His primary early focus was in modeling, measurements, and calculations to support room acoustics consulting, but his comfort in the world of audio quickly led to leadership on projects incorporating electronic acoustic enhancement and provided a strong connection to the audio/video discipline he continues to emphasize in his room acoustics work.

Pfeiffer has presented his work as an invited speaker at Greenbuild, the Concert Hall Research Group, Acoustical Society of America, Audio Engineering Society, League of Historic American Theatres, United States Institute of Theatre Technology, and AIA Chicago, among others. His writing about acoustics and audio/video systems have been published in the Journal of American Organ Building, CISCA, and the American Organist.

Pfeiffer has also been on the part-time faculty at Columbia College Chicago, teaching architectural acoustics in the Audio Arts and Acoustics department. He serves on the Knowles Center Advisory Board at the School of Communication Disorders at Northwestern University.

The mission of the Construction Industry Advisory Committee is to provide a continuing liaison between the academic community and the practicing profession and to assist the Construction Engineering (CONE) and Construction Management (CM) programs, The Durham School, the College of Engineering and UNL in providing the highest quality of construction education.

Bryan Bush

Bryan Bush began his construction career with Broadmoor Development Company in 1990. His responsibilities included budgeting and planning for new multifamily and light commercial projects, project procurement and overseeing all field processes.

Bush moved to City Glass Company in 1998 to oversee the Project Management Department. In 1999, he purchased 25 percent interest in the company and in 2006, along with another business partner, purchased the remaining shares from Joe Erman to become a 50 percent shareholder.

He has served on the Board of Directors for the National Glass Association, currently as immediate past chairman. In addition to the NGA, Bush also serves on the Board of Directors for the Construction Financial Management Association.

Bush has been married to his wife, Karen, since 1994 and has two daughters.

Joseph M. Delgado

After graduation, Joe Delgado went to work for Kiewit Construction in Rifle, Colorado constructing an oil shale mine and assisted building a hydro-electric system in Ogallala.

In 1985, he moved back to Lincoln to work for his father’s company, Tony’s Cement Works, Inc.; in 1998 he bought

his father’s company and renamed it TCW Construction Inc. That same year they started Husker Concrete, LLC, a ready mixed concrete company that sells to the public and supports TCW Construction in all of its concrete needs. It is now in its 18th year of business.

TCW Construction also became a Butler Building Contractor in 1999, which allows them access to the pre-engineered building business. In addition, TCW Construction started a crushing concrete business in 2000 to utilize its waste concrete and use it as a base for paving projects that require an aggregate base coarse.

Renée Robison Jacobs

Renée Robison Jacobs is a Certified Healthcare Facility Manager, Certified Healthcare Constructor and Senior ASHE (American Society for Healthcare Engineering) with more than 25 years and $1 billion of experience in construction project management and coordination of projects.

Jacobs’ current position at Johnson Controls has her integrally involved in strategically aligning sales and operations for three national healthcare customers. Her leadership duties encompass supporting and aligning the sales force, strategic planning, business and project development, team leadership, customer satisfaction and financial results.

Formerly as vice president of facilities and construction at Saint Luke’s Health System, Jacobs had oversight of all areas of design, construction, renovation, master planning, and plant operations and maintenance for 11 Kansas City area hospitals. At Saint Luke’s Health System, she was responsible for approximately $12 million operating and $11 million utility budgets annually, environmental stewardship for the health system and coordinating the development of all capital improvement construction projects from inception to completion. Jacobs led the New Saint Luke’s $330 million capital construction project, successfully completing a portion of the project as the first integrated project delivery (IPD) project for the health system.

Jacobs is an active member of ASHE. She is active in the local ASHE chapter, the Kansas City Area Healthcare Engineers (KCAHE) and has served on the board as president, past-president and secretary. Additionally, she is a founding board member of LEAN KC, a chapter of the Lean Construction Institute, and is a member of the the Overland Park Rotary Club.

Michael Naccarato

Mike Naccarato, PE, SE, is a structural engineer and chief corporate engineer – director of Training / Standards for Topping Out Inc. (TOI).

He began his career immediately after graduation at LEO A DALY in Omaha. He served as lead structural engineer on various projects in his nearly 19-year tenure that included local, national and international projects.

In 1999, Naccarato changed career direction and joined Davis Erection in Omaha as chief engineer/project manager. His first project was the 40-story First National Bank Tower project (located in Omaha) for which he was the structural engineer of record while finishing his career at LAD.

His current role at TOI allows him to use his unique experience in various divisions of the company. He is still active in many local professional organizations and serves on several boards. He is past president (2006-2007) of the Structural Engineer’s Association of Nebraska (SEAON).

Mark Nienhueser

Mark Nienhueser is the former Vice President of Property Development at Cabela’s, Inc., a leading specialty retailer and the world’s largest direct marketer of hunting, fishing, camping and related outdoor merchandise, with nearly $4 billion in annual sales and real estate operations in the United States and Canada.

He was responsible for building a team of more than 70 employees and dozens of consultants in real estate, architecture, engineering, store planning, construction, customer engagement and corporate properties management with an annual budget of more than $300 million. He helped develop 68 new stores, increasing retail selling space by over seven million square feet.

He also developed two million square feet of new distribution centers; a new data center, more than 300,000 square feet of corporate office space at numerous locations, 72-unit apartment complex and master planned a new 440-acre residential housing development.

Prior to Cabela’s, Nienhueser spent over 12 years with Peter Kiewit Sons’ Inc., one of the largest contractors in the world, working for the Kiewit Building Group. He managed the business development, marketing, pre-construction and construction services.

Jean Petsch

Jean Petsch is currently executive director and CEO of the Associated General Contractors – Nebraska Building Chapter – a professional trade association of commercial building contractors in the state. In addition to her association responsibilities, she has taken a leadership role in the forming of the Nebraska Construction

Industry Council, which is dedicated to increasing workforce development for the construction industry. She is also a strong supporter of the “Career Academy” model of secondary/post-secondary education/industry partnerships in education.

Petsch serves as an Industry Advisor Committee (IAC) member to The Durham School-Construction Programs; the IAC for Construction Management at the University of Nebraska-Kearney; IAC for Construction Technology at Southeast Community College and Iowa Western Community College. She is currently on the Boards and Executive Committees for Heartland Workforce Solutions, Concordia University Foundation and the Executive Leadership Council of the Associated General Contractors of America. She has been a past member of the Board of Education, Milford Public Schools and past president of Adult and Continuing Education Association of Nebraska.

During her career, Petsch has also spent time on the faculty of Bellevue University—College of Professional Studies and Southeast Community College-Milford Campus; and as owner, president and dealer principle of Seward County Ford.

Kama L. Pfister

Kama Pfister has been with HDR for over 17 years and has specialized in construction administration for healthcare projects across the United States.

As a project architect, Pfister’s roles and responsibilities have included all phases design, including: programming, planning, project design, team

coordination, document production, specifications writing, and construction administration.

She currently works in HDR Omaha’s Construction Contract Administration department. She is experienced in developing and maintaining specific client portfolios and relationships and has comprehensive knowledge of contracts, project administration, and documentation processes.

Jeff Schomberg

Jeff Schomberg started his professional career in May 1990, joining the Kohler Company, where he worked for 16 years. From 1990-94, he was an industrial project engineer in Kohler, Wisconsin, responsible for safety, productivity improvements and capital projects. From 1994-99, he was supervisor of Industrial

Engineering in Spartanburg, South Carolina, responsible for capital projects, continuous improvement and new technology. From 1999-2006, he was a senior staff engineer and international project manager leading the design and construction of manufacturing plants, and working with Mergers & Acquisitions in plant evaluations globally.

In 2006, Schomberg joined Johnson Controls, Inc., in Denver. He was the Northwest Regional Continuous Improvement Manager, responsible for sharing best practices and helping drive improved business results across all branches in the region. In 2009, he moved to Omaha, and he has served as Systems Branch Manager (NE, SD, ND and MT) and Branch General Manager (Nebraska), responsible for all operations, including safety, customer satisfaction, employee engagement/development, sales, engineering, installation, service and overall business results and growth.

In addition to the CIAC, Schomberg serves on numerous committees for the Mechanical Contractors Association of Omaha, is active with several community diversity groups, coaches baseball for the Millard Athletic Association and serves on numerous committees within his church.

Schomberg and his wife, Shannon, reside in Omaha, have been married for 23 years, and have three children: Kyrstin, Joshua and Samuel.

Don Wrieth

Joining Kiewit in 1975, Don Wrieth worked as a civil engineering technician and land surveyor for B. H. Backlund and Associates and Kirkham Michael Associates. While working at both of these firms, Wrieth attended Omaha University and the University of Nebraska at Omaha part-time.

Wrieth started his career in Kiewit’s Mining District. In 1985, he moved to Kiewit’s Fiber Optic District as a foreman installing long line fiber optic cable from Kansas City, Missouri to Dallas / Ft. Worth, Texas.; in 1986, he transferred to Savannah, Georgia to take over management of the Kiewit acquisition of Continental Mineral Sales; in 1988, he moved back to Omaha to work in Kiewit’s Corporate Business Development department. In 1990, Wrieth was promoted to corporate marketing manager assisting all Kiewit regional offices with the development of their marketing materials and proposal preparation. In 1998, he joined Kiewit Corporation subsidiary, Kiewit Building Group Inc., as manager of Business Development.

Currently, he serves as chairman for The Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction, Construction Industry Advisory Committee, and also supports the Events, Curriculum, Funding & Scholarship, and Organization & Governance committees; and is president of the Exchange Club of Omaha and a board member of Hospital Authority #2 of Douglas County, Nebraska.

Wrieth has served as a board member and past president of the Associated General Contractors of America – Nebraska Building Chapter; Omaha Exchange Club; and the United Way of the Midlands - Youth Volunteer Corp. Marcelo Algrain has been with Caterpillar since 1997, holding engineering management and research positions in the Electric Power Division, and the Product Development and Global Technology Division. He has been responsible for emergency power system analysis and design for critical operations (data centers,

healthcare, industrial and commercial), integration of distributed generation to the electric power system, generator set control system developments, and new technology applications. He led Caterpillar’s research programs on the electrification of construction machines and on-highway trucks to improve efficiency, reliability, power management, and packaging flexibility.

From 1991-97, he was with the Electrical Engineering Department at UNL, starting as an assistant professor and rising to the rank of associate professor with tenure. From 1989-91, he was an engineering specialist at Recon/Optical, Inc., where he performed analyses on stabilization and control systems for high-resolution aerial reconnaissance systems.

From 1984-89, Algrain was at Borg-Warner’s Research Center, developing control systems for a variety of automotive and industrial products. From 1981-84, he was with the Babcock & Wilcox Co., designing process control systems for nuclear power plants.

Algrain has more than 35 scientific publications to his credit and holds 15 patents with several more pending. He is a senior member of IEEE, and holds committee leadership positions in the development of IEEE Standard 1547 and 1547.1 for the interconnection of distributed energy resources.

Charlie Cooper

Charlie Cooper grew up in Lakehurst, New Jersey on the Jersey Shore. Charlie spent college summers working at Lakehurst Naval Air Station in the Navy Civilian Engineering in Training Program. He spent his entire professional career in the telecommunication industry. Cooper started with the Lincoln Telephone Company in 1970 and

served in positions in Outside Plant Engineering, Switch Engineering, Planning, Marketing, and Regulatory Support. After retiring from Lincoln Telephone in 1998, he served as the Director of Regulatory Strategies and Partner for Consortia Consulting headquartered in Omaha.

He is a longtime member of IEEE and has served on the Lincoln Cable Advisory Board. Cooper retired for the second time in 2009, and lives in Lincoln where he and his wife, Chris, enjoy their two children and three grandchildren.

Paul A. Crist

Paul Crist has held this position at Lincoln Electric System since May 2013. Prior to that, Crist was Substation Director/Manager, Manager of Communication and Protection Design, System Control Supervisor, System Protection Supervisor, and System Protection Engineer. He has worked for LES since April 1990.

He is also a Registered Professional Electrical Engineer in Nebraska. He has been active on the University of Nebraska Electrical Engineering External Advisory Board and has represented the American Public Power Association on the development of the electricity subsector cyber security Risk Management Process guideline in collaboration with the Department of Energy, the National Institute of Standards and Technology and the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (“NERC”).

He is currently an acting chairperson of the NERC Critical Infrastructure Protection Committee Compliance and Enforcement Input Working Group. His duties include the oversight of all operational and enterprise technology systems at LES. Crist’s responsibilities include the systems that operate and monitor the Bulk Electric System, Cyber Security, the Enterprise Resource Planning System, and the Geographic Information Systems.

Gordon L. Heins

Engineering Supervisor of Controls, Automation and Technical Studies, Transmission and Distribution Engineering Department, NPPD B.S. ‘82 - Electrical Engineering, University of Nebraska- Lincoln; MBA ‘97, University of Nebraska at Kearney

Gordon Heins worked as senior electrical design engineer at Vishay Dale Electronics in Columbus, Nebraska from 1983-92.

He also served as an electrical design engineer at Vanguard Automation in Tucson, Arizona; and at Huffman Engineering in Lincoln. In 1994, Heins joined

Nebraska Public Power District (NPPD) as an electrical engineer in the Substation Department. He then worked for seven years in the Economic Development and Technical Solutions Groups as an industrial and business account consultant.

In 2003, he became engineering supervisor and then manager of NPPD’s Protection, Controls and Automation Engineering Group. Heins received a “20 Years of Service at NPPD” award, and is a Columbus Area United Way “Bridge Builder”.

In 1993, Heins became a licensed Professional Electrical Engineer in the State of Nebraska. He has been a Certified Energy Manager since 1997 and a Certified Lighting Efficiency Professional since 1998. He is one of the original engineers receiving the title of Certified Green Engineer and has been a member of the Association of Energy Engineers for many years.

Heins has been a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) since 1976. He has served in every IEEE state officer position and was IEEE’s Nebraska Section Chairman in 2006. He has been a member of the National Society of Professional Engineers since 1991.

In 1999, he became a member of the State Board of Directors of the Nebraska Society of Professional Engineers and was state president in 2003-04.

John Rada

As director of Engineering at LI-COR Biosciences in Lincoln, John Rada is responsible for leading the engineering department that develops new instrumentation and software products for both the Environmental and Biotechnology market areas.

In this capacity, Engineering also develops new technologies, provides sustaining engineering for existing products, and supports LI-COR manufacturing and LI-COR’s suppliers. To meet this need, Engineering employs a range of engineering and technician disciplines, including optical, electrical, mechanical, and software. Some of the areas of focus for Rada include project planning and staffing, recruiting, personnel development, budgeting, and assisting with strategic planning at the corporate level.

Rada joined LI-COR in 1995 as an Instrumentation Design Engineer and was promoted to Sr. Instrumentation Design Engineer in 2003. As an electrical engineer and project manager, he helped develop a remote sensing Turf Management System and worked on LI-COR’s photosynthesis, atmospheric gas detection, and DNA sequencing product lines. In 2004, he was selected to lead the engineering department as engineering manager, and was promoted to director of Engineering in 2007.

John and his wife, Geriann, reside near Ceresco and have three daughters and one son.

Her research interests include autonomous energy management of flexible loads in buildings in order to increase the penetration of renewable energy resources.

Lucas “Luke” Smith

After graduating from college, Smith entered the U.S. Army as a Signal Corps officer. He achieved the rank of Captain and then left to enter business after five years of service.

As his business career progressed, he led engineering organizations, manufacturing organizations, and product divisions in large public

companies. The largest organization had 5,000 employees. He was responsible for budgets larger than $100 million. The product division he led earned revenues greater than $100 million.

In 1995, he entered the world of startups. His startup roles have been VP of Operations, COO, and CEO. Two of the startups were acquired for several hundred million dollars.

He is now at a startup in Ottawa, Canada as COO. This startup focuses on providing solutions for the energy conservation and renewable energy markets. Additionally, Smith consults, does mentoring, and serves as a director in the startup space.

John Smith is an accomplished business and engineering professional with nearly 30 years’ experience in developing new business opportunities domestically and internationally for a wide range of companies and clients in multiple industries.

Smith’s early career was spent as a performance engineer for ACI Worldwide. In that

capacity, he worked for nearly eight years contributing to the successful implementation of ATM/POS/Debit Card solutions at some of the world’s largest financial institution’s. Over the next 13 years, he held multiple management and executive level positions with three industry-leading technology companies providing solutions to the top wireless/mobile communication companies in the US and Europe.

Smith’s positions quickly transitioned from technology team development to developing new market initiatives. In 2011, he and Steve McCollister launched an innovation enterprise called Accelerated Success (AS) to drastically improve the success of newly formed companies. Shortly after AS was launched, Smith was approached by representatives of the (i)Tribal Emergency Management Association (iTEMA) to help take control of their emergency management needs. In five years, AS has implemented six new businesses designed to strengthen Tribal sovereignty and self-determination.

Smith is the founder, former president and board member of the UNO Executive MBA Alumni Association. He has also held positions as committee chair and board member for the Downtown Rotary Club of Omaha.

Doug Dederman

In November 2003, Doug Dederman was promoted to manager of the Penetration Systems Department at Sandia National Laboratories (SNL). He manages subprogram areas in both Target Defeat and Target Protection under the Integrated Military Systems Program. In addition, Dederman manages a staff of engineers that provide technology and system

solutions against challenging targets for both shallow and deep earth penetration applications and soldier protection systems.

Dederman is responsible for review and oversight of activities including penetration mechanics; Hi-G projectile and target design, fabrication and system integration; modeling and simulation to predict system performance as well as oversight of field experiment design and execution.

From 2000-03, Dederman was the Sandia Reentry Vehicle & Countermeasures project manager for the Systems Engineering & Integration Directorate of the Missile Defense Agency. From 1998-2000, he was the Sandia Project manager for a Reentry Vehicle & Penetration Aids Design Program sponsored by the Intelligence Branch of the Ballistic Missile Defense Organization and the U.S. Army Space & Missile Defense Command.

Previously, Dederman was the Launch Vehicle Project Manager for integration, mission planning and launch of the Red Crow Flight Experiment from Kauai Test Facility, Barking Sands, Pacific Missile Range Facility. He has also served as a Project Engineer for the Strategic Target System (STARS) Launch Vehicle, which produced four successful launches, and as a Shock and Vibration Test Engineer at Sandia.

Kenneth L. Baumert

Prior to retiring, Kenneth Baumert served as a engineering consultant from 2005-14. He previously served as manager, Materials Group, Air Products and Chemicals from 2001-05, as well as a materials and corrosion engineer there from 1977-2001. His position at Air Products and Chemicals was a staff specialist, where he was available to

all parts of the company, including cryogenic gases, electronic gases, hydrogen manufacture, and chemicals.

Baumert also worked at Mobil Oil Corporation from 1970-77 as a materials and corrosion engineer, as well as a research engineer at Caterpillar Tractor Co. for several summers. He also taught freshman-level engineering courses while in graduate school.

He was active in The National Association of Corrosion Engineers, Materials Technology Institute, American Society for Testing and Materials for 25 years. He also served as president of the Materials Technology Institute. Baumert received three patents and has 21 publications.

From her office in Kansas City, Missouri, Frye provides national leadership by connecting resources across HDR’s global network of industry professionals, tailoring teams to custom fit her clients’ needs. The impacts of her projects – which include transfer stations, material recovery facilities, public drop-off facilities, and more – can be felt from California to New York, up and down the coasts and across the Midwest, including Hawaii and Alaska.

Frye is a LEED® AP and Envision Sustainability Credentialed Professional, and has designed many USGBC LEED certified facilities and implemented the Envision sustainability process on various infrastructure projects.

Greg Gould

Greg Gould has spent his entire 41-year career at Burns & McDonnell. He currently focuses on the tools, technology and work processes the company uses to execute projects across their 11 business units. In addition, he has responsibility for their information technology, strategic initiatives, and quality assurance groups, as well as

overseeing their project risk assessment process.

Prior to his promotion to Chief Technical Officer, he spent 29 years in a variety of roles in the Energy Division, which designs and builds electric power projects. Gould served at various times as a project engineer, project manager, department manager, manager of international projects, manager of engineering, manager of projects and general manager of the division. He spent five years pursuing and executing various projects in the electric utility industry in Southeast Asia.

During his career, Gould has officially mentored a number of new engineers and has unofficially mentored many others. He credits much of the success he has had in his career to the mentoring he received from others.

He is a licensed professional engineer in the State of Mississippi and a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

Melanie Luttig

Melanie Luttig started studying engineering in Omaha and later transferred to Lincoln to finish her Mechanical Engineering degree. She held internships at Caterpillar and Burns & McDonnell before graduating in December 2009. In 2010 she moved to Kansas City to start her career at Burns & McDonnell, a full service engineering and construction consulting firm

listed as one of Fortune’s 100 Best Companies to Work For.

During her tenure at Burns & McDonnell, Luttig has worked as an equipment and design engineer on EPC projects for the Oil & Gas industry. In 2012, she became a Certified Welding Inspector; she has worked as a supplier quality engineer performing inspections and ensuring the products Burns & McDonnell procure for its projects meets client specifications and standards.

Luttig has also mentored new hires and has been involved with the Burns & McDonnell Foundation by volunteering with a variety of different community organizations. She currently serves as chair of the Corporate Citizenship Committee, a group of representatives from each business unit who are responsible for helping to organize the company’s United Way and Charity of Choice giving campaigns each year, which when combined raised over $2 million last year.

Scott Kratzer

While at UNL, Scott Kratzer was involved with the UCARE program helping to do research on piezoelectric materials, including ceramics and polymers. He was active in Pi Tau Sigma and was selected as a NASA Hartmann Fellow and worked as a tutor and mentor for younger mechanical engineering students.

After graduation, Kratzer accepted a job with Emerson Process Management in Marshalltown, Iowa. He is involved in the mechanical design of industrial instruments. He works closely with both electrical and software engineers, allowing him to collaborate with and be named on multi-discipline patents. Projects have included wireless transmitters and valve-top switches.

Currently, he is the mechanical design lead on a next generation electronic process controller. Kratzer has continued mentoring younger designers as well as helping to shape cross-discipline design processes.

He lives in Marshalltown with his wife of seven years and four daughters. He’s been active on several non-profit boards, including Habitat for Humanity.

David Purdy

David Purdy retired as vice president engineering at Applied Power Associates in 2000 after working there for 11 years.

Prior to this, he was chief mechanical engineer, nuclear at Gibbs & Hill from 1966-88. He also worked at other companies and positions from 1950-66.

He is a professional registered engineer in Virginia, New York, Nebraska and Kansas.

Norman Newhouse

Hal M. Spurrier

Born in Scottsbluff, Nebraska, Hal Spurrier has been president and owner of Snyder Industries since 2002.

Previously, Spurrier was a project engineer with Bendix Corp., in Kansas City, beginning in1966.

He then moved to California, where he held several positions.

He served as director of Engineering at Pharmaseal Laboratories in Glendale, starting in 1976. In 1980, he began as vice president of Manufacturing at Scipto Corp., in Monrovia, then in 1990 began serving as president of Plastiglide Manufacturing Corp., in El Segundo.

He and his wife, Nancy, have been married since 1962. His son, Michael, is vice president of sales and marketing. and Snyder Industries. His grandson, Cameron Spurrier, is a sophomore at Wake Forest University.
