THE NOMADS CREED

“No man is an island entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main;

Any man’s death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind;

And therefore, never send to know for whom the bell tolls;

It tolls for thee.”

from the Meditations of John Donne (1573-1631)

CAPTAIN’S COMMENTS

There was no September newsletter as Karen was overseas visiting family. Karen, we all hope that you had a great time visiting Graeme who has always been a great supporter of Nomads particularly Andrew Mentis.

Welcome back!!

By the time you read this our 20th anniversary will be a distant memory, but requires reflection on what was a

really great weekend. While this is a personal opinion it was reinforced by comments from many of our visitors

from around the country. On that point thank you to all our friends from other clubs for taking the time to be

here and making our celebration special.

A special Anniversary issue is in the pipeline and comments and photos from that spectacular event will be

showcased there—but in the meantime ……….

Allied to the festivities of that weekend was the National Management Meeting and major news was :

• National Vice Chairman Alten Hume has been forced to resign his position as a result of work pressures. There is at this time no news on a successor and nominations will be submitted by clubs during the course

of this month.

• 2018 Nationals are to be held from 4-10 March at Royal Cape Golf Course

• The average age of Nomads has come down by 7 years over the last 8 to stand at 57.

• The bad news is that countrywide the membership dropped by 116, the equivalent of a whole club

The Sunday game at White River was a full field and thanks go to Luigi Colmanet and Rob Douglass for getting us

off to a prompt start assisted by Nic de Beer and Hedley Street. Thank you guys

Neville Blum was awarded his 200-game badge and we also welcomed inductees and cousins Greg and Kevin Cruse. Unfortunately for Kevin, the Mclagan curse on my four-ball prevailed again and he had a game to forget,

while other cousin Alec Blair was left pondering where the 1-point got away with a well-played 39.

LOWVELD NOMADS (Founded 1996)

NEWSLETTER - OCTOBER 2016

Our October game at Sabi River Sun (Not Bungalows anymore) was another good day. The small pub area works well in the morning but is inadequate for a prize giving with many having to sit outside. We are told that a new golf club house is

planned near the existing putting green for completion by Easter 2017 with improved shower facilities and more space.

The course was in excellent condition despite the drought and we were well received by the Golf Director Gavin Brough (photo 1). I played with Club Captain Neil Waitt (photo 2). Guess what, my curse was true to form and Neil won the coveted booby prize although not being a Nomad meant that Roger Braithwaite was the (un)lucky recipient of the matchbox.

(pictured below with me and Fines Master Kevin Cruse.)

Gary Bray, one of our regular Easterns visitors had a magnificent round and won a Silver Salver with his 43

pointer. He obviously played a different course to me.

On a more serious note, it is sad to note that guys are not staying for prize-giving and are also not tendering the

necessary apologies.

Apologies are not merely your name and R50 given to the ladies at the scoring table but are to be conveyed personally to the Captain or Vice Captain in advance of

leaving. Our prizes are due to the generosity of our many sponsors and we owe it to them to be present at prize giving.

It was great to have Lwazi Josana back from illness at the game and despite not having 100% strength beat the pants off many other players. Just as he is recovering, our thoughts and prayers go out to Gavin Bullen who is

receiving some treatment.

We meet again at the Andrew Mentis Day in November. As you all know, this is our big charity fund raiser. If you haven’t done so yet, please get a sponsor and be as generous as you can in the purchase of raffle tickets on the day. This all goes directly to our chosen beneficiaries and I wish Brian Springorum all the best for an enjoyable

and very successful day. Until next time, keep it on the fairway

CHANGE ROOM CHATTERBOX—OCTOBER 2016

As you all know we had a busy end to September — what with our 20th anniversary , and what a weekend it was. The cocktail party on the Friday was probably not as well attended by local Nomads as it could have been but nevertheless it was great to meet a lot of visiting Nomads who had made the trip from the Cape, KZN, Zimbabwe and various other clubs around the country to support us. Saturday’s dinner was great, the food was good and the wine they put on the tables was very drinkable indeed. There was live entertainment which kept the party going and it was great to see so many of our “Founding Fathers” in attendance receiving their 20-year ties. I think that Lowveld can be justifiably proud of what the club and its members have achieved over the years and I honestly believe we continue to punch above our weight—well done to Tommy and his committee……. it was a great effort.

Now onto the serious stuff. As usual I finished in the pack and our four-ball avoided the dreaded Bunny-ears so all in all a good weekend. I must just add that I won the longest drive for the over-55’s—the first prize I have won that was not a lucky draw in ages and Karen did not even want to take a photograph!!! Oh well I was happy any way. It seems to follow some kind of pattern or is it Karma I’m not sure? But once again someone new to nomads won the matchbox. Kevin Cruse was inducted and took the dreaded prize home with him. Knowing Kevin as I do we are at least guaranteed an entertaining fines session next month. Alec Blair narrowly missed out on a 40 pointer so it really was a game of mixed fortunes for the family. White River was in good nick and it felt very strange actually playing off grass…….that is the excuse I’m using as a Nelspruit member any way. We are still waiting with baited breath for the first good rains, lets hope they come soon.

Since our last newsletter we have had another game as well—Sabie River Sun - which was another great day, although very hot . I think the heat took its toll on most because I won the Runner-up place in the C division only to be beaten by Johan who is so thin he doesn’t even cast a shadow so he is not affected by the heat. It was a very entertaining fines session as promised and our new winner ’Dodgy Uncle Rodgy’ has got a lot to live up to. I saw Gerald and Difflock sharing a cart—and guess who drove? Nice to see Gerald finish another game after his recent troubles.

We had our complimentary game at Leopard Creek earlier in the week and what an absolute privilege to play on a course that is in such good nick. For that reason alone it is worth working four days at the Dunhill Tournament. If you are undecided please let that motivate you and let Beefy know. He puts a hell of an effort in for us year after year for little thanks and reward and it is a big fund raiser for Nomads as well. The dates are from the 1st to the 4th of December so please try and be there. (Photo lifted from the Internet and credited to gettyimages Warren Little)

A man and his wife have lived a full life and as luck would have it they both reached the ripe old age of 85 and they passed away within days of each other. They met in heaven and when they got to the Pearly Gates they were greeted by St Peter who showed them around. It was a golfing paradise!! Just in their area alone four magnificent golf courses, tee times readily available ….everything simply magnificent. The lady turns to her husband and says to him ’Isn’t this great dear?’ and her husband turns around to her and says “It is wonderful and if you hadn’t fed us those damn bran muffins all these years we could have been here ten years ago!’ Keep swinging
