Moses by Michelangelo, 1513-1515, Marble sculpture, San Pietro in Vincoli, Rome, Italy, design for Julius II tomb in the High Renaissance style.

As we continue our study of the 10 Commandments, we turn to our first sculpture for a Hershey PCA worship booklet cover.

“A true Renaissance man, Michelangelo (1475-1564) was gifted as a painter, a sculptor, an engineer, an architect, and a poet, but his preference was for sculpture, with its plastic possibilities for the revelation and exaltation of the human body.

…Michelangelo himself thought this statue of Moses was among his best works—and many viewers agree. Vasari, the contemporary artist and biographer of Michelangelo said of this statue of Moses; ‘…Moses may now be called the friend of God more than ever, since God has permitted his body to be prepared for the resurrection before the others by the hand of Michelangelo.’ Indeed, Michelangelo’s skill as a sculptor can be seen throughout the work. The fabric in Moses’ clothes is full of deep folds and at stress points clinging to the man’s legs. On his arms you can see the veins and tendons of the hands as he holds the heavy stone tablets, cut square as was custom at the time, before the now common image of the tablets with arched tops. His beard is made up of long flowing hairs full of curls and carved with such detail that individual strains are almost seen.

…Moses’ face is especially full of detail and emotion. Even though much of the face is covered by the beard, the structure of the face is still defined by heavy cheekbones visible through the tight skin. Having been talked to by God and given the responsibility to present His commandments, Moses is full of thought. His brows furled and eyes looking far beyond.

…Perhaps what appears most shocking to viewers is relatively easily explained. Most of what is shown is what we typically think of Moses: old man, robe, beard, tablets. But then, atop his head, there are two horns protruding out. For modern viewers this can be a very odd and disconcerting sight – horns are usually associated with more negative connotations, not prophets of god. However, for medieval and early renaissance artists, horns were a common sight on Moses. It is believed to go back to a translation of the bible where instead of Moses’ skin shining with light, it was horned. Translating from one language can be a tricky task that is dependent on inflection, verb tenses, and many other complications. It was an interpretation common to many other artists.”

Praising God

Call to Worship Psalm 28:6-9

As we turn to Scripture this morning, let these verses remind you to come with a heart prepared, a mind ready, to praise, love, and glorify God—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Blessed be the LORD!

For he has heard the voice of my pleas for mercy.

7 The LORD is my strength and my shield;

in him my heart trusts, and I am helped;

my heart exults,

and with my song I give thanks to him.

8 The LORD is the strength of his people;

he is the saving refuge of his anointed.

9 Oh, save your people and bless your heritage!

Be their shepherd and carry them forever.

*Prayer of Adoration & Invocation In our first prayer we respond to our Creator God’s call to come and worship him, acknowledging the true God as the Trinitarian God revealed in Scripture, and as our God.

*Confession of Faith: Heidelberg Catechism Q&A 110-111

The Heidelberg Catechism is a sister doctrinal statement to our own Westminster Standards. Written in 1563, it is “a remarkably warm-hearted and personalized confession of faith, eminently deserving of its popularity among Reformed churches to the present day.”

Q. 110. What does God forbid in the eighth commandment?

A. God forbids not only outright theft and robbery, punishable by law. But in God’s sight theft also includes all scheming and swindling in order to get our neighbor’s goods for ourselves, whether by force or means that appear legitimate, such as inaccurate measurements of weight, size, or volume; fraudulent merchandising; counterfeit money; excessive interest; or any other means forbidden by God. In addition, God forbids all greed and pointless squandering of his gifts.

Q. 111. What does God require of you in this commandment?

A. That I do whatever I can for my neighbor’s good, that I treat others as I would like them to treat me, and that I work faithfully so that I may share with those in need.

Facing Up to Our Sin before God

Reading of God’s Standard Jeremiah 7:1-11 As we listen to this reading of Scripture today we remember that our God is a holy God, “a consuming fire” (Hebrews 12:29), and so we are to “see that [we] do not refuse him who is speaking” (Hebrews 12:25). Hearing God’s righteous standard, understand your need for confession of sins and for a savior through whom you might find forgiveness and cleansing.

The word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD: 2 “Stand in the gate of

the LORD’s house, and proclaim there this word, and say, Hear the word

of the LORD, all you men of Judah who enter these gates to worship the

LORD. 3 Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: Amend your

ways and your deeds, and I will let you dwell in this place. 4 Do not trust

in these deceptive words: ‘This is the temple of the LORD, the temple of

the LORD, the temple of the LORD.’

5 For if you truly amend your ways and your deeds, if you truly execute

justice one with another, 6 if you do not oppress the sojourner, the

fatherless, or the widow, or shed innocent blood in this place, and if you

do not go after other gods to your own harm, 7 then I will let you dwell

in this place, in the land that I gave of old to your fathers forever.

8 "Behold, you trust in deceptive words to no avail. 9 Will you steal,

murder, commit adultery, swear falsely, make offerings to Baal, and go

after other gods that you have not known, 10 and then come and stand

before me in this house, which is called by my name, and say, ‘We are

delivered!’—only to go on doing all these abominations? 11 Has this

house, which is called by my name, become a den of robbers in your eyes?

Behold, I myself have seen it, declares the LORD….”

Confession of Sin Our confession of sin expresses “both sorrow over the sins we have committed and our revulsion at sin in general.” (Hughes Oliphant Old, Leading in Prayer, 78)

Song of Contrition O God, Show Mercy to Us (Psalm 67C) Today, as we remain seated, we continue to humble ourselves before the Lord as we sing together from Psalm 67.

Assurance of Pardon in Christ Jeremiah 31:31-34 The Assurance announces that the Scripture promises forgiveness to all those who repent, confessing their sins to God and putting their faith in Jesus Christ.

Behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD, when I will make a

new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah, 32 not

like the covenant that I made with their fathers on the day when I took

them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, my covenant

that they broke, though I was their husband, declares the LORD.

33 For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after

those days, declares the LORD: I will put my law within them, and I will

write it on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they shall be my

people. 34 And no longer shall each one teach his neighbor and each his

brother, saying, “Know the LORD,” for they shall all know me, from the

least of them to the greatest, declares the LORD. For I will forgive their

iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.

*The Doxology We sing this ascription of praise to God as a response to God’s provision for us in Christ. Through it we call everyone in the created order to celebrate and praise our gracious God.

Praise God from whom all bless-ings flow: praise him, all crea-tures here be-low; praise him a-bove, ye heav’n-ly host: praise Fa-ther, Son, and Ho-ly Ghost. A-men.

Offering Our Prayers and Ourselves to God

Prayer of Intercession & the Lord’s Prayer See page 19 for this week’s prayer items.

Our time of intercession will close with the Lord’s Prayer:

“Our Father who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.” For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

Presentation of Our Tithes & Offerings Tithes and Offerings are an expression of our worship of God. Through them we demonstrate that him. “…whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” (2 Corinthians 9:6-7)

*Prayer for Illumination In this prayer, we ask the Lord to open our eyes and hearts to his Word. “The Holy Spirit who inspired the authors of these sacred texts must inspire those who read and those who preach and those who listen. Otherwise those texts will fail to move us. Revelation is from beginning to end a work of God’s Spirit.” (Hughes Oliphant Old, Leading in Prayer, 140)

*Reading of Scripture The Scriptures, the Word of God written, informs us of God’s revealed will. In it we learn what we are to believe concerning God, and the duty he requires of us (Westminster Shorter Catechism, Q&A 3). As it is read, remember what the Lord said through Isaiah: “…this is the one to whom I will look: he who is humble and contrite in spirit and trembles at my word.” (Isa. 66:2)

Exodus 20:1-2, 15

And God spoke all these words, saying, 2 I am the LORD your

God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house

of slavery.

15 …You shall not steal.

Ephesians 4:28

Let the thief no longer steal, but rather let him labor, doing

honest work with his own hands, so that he may have

something to share with anyone in need.

*Leader: This is the Word of the Lord. *Congregation: Thanks be to God!

Sermon: Walk This Way (9): “Patient Reliance” Pastor David Kertland

The sermon is a time to consider the Scripture that was read, learning what it means and how it impacts our lives.

The Eighth Commandment (Exodus 20:15)

Sermon Notes:

Prayer of Application The sermon concludes with a prayer asking the Lord to help us to be those who listen to his word and obey it. “…be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.” (James 1:22)

Receiving Provision from God

Celebration of the Lord’s Supper

Invitation & Warning

Words of Institution & Prayer

Distribution of the Elements

Please wait until all are served before eating. Our communion bread is gluten-free. The tray of communion cups provides a choice of grape juice or wine (see diagram).

O Lamb of God Mozart Humbly I Adore Thee 13th Century Plainsong

Prayer

Invitation to the Lord’s Supper Hershey Presbyterian Church (PCA) welcomes to receive the Holy Supper all baptized

Christians who actively trust in Jesus Christ for salvation, who are willing to forsake their sin and obey Christ, and who are members in good standing of an evangelical church that proclaims the gospel or who have been approved by our Session after indicating a desire to participate (BCO 58-4). Children should await communicant membership before participating.

Let this table, and our communion together as guests around the Lord’s table each week, point you to Jesus—to receive grace from him, to regularly hold out your empty and faltering hands to him, to allow him to feed and strengthen you, and to remind you that He, your Creator and your Head, is for you and will help you as you seek to follow him this week.

If you are not a baptized believer in Jesus today, we are glad that you are here with us this morning! We ask you not to participate in this part of the service. We do invite you to stay and observe this celebration of the Christian’s union with the risen Jesus. Today, even as the bread and wine pass by, let them urge you to cry out to Jesus and pray the following prayer (or one like it):

Prayer of Belief: Lord Jesus Christ, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever dared to admit, but through you I am more loved and accepted than I ever dared to hope. I thank you for paying my debt on the cross, taking what I deserved in order to offer me complete forgiveness. Knowing that you have been raised from the dead, I turn from my sins and receive you as my Savior and Lord. Amen.

For a full statement of our invitation to the Lord’s Supper, see the handout on the back table of our worship space.

Being Sent to Serve God

*Benediction The benediction is a pronouncement of blessing on God’s people in Christ. It is usually a biblical blessing. Let it remind you that if you are in Christ, you can leave with confidence to live this week knowing that the Lord Himself is your Shepherd and that you will lack no needful thing (Psalm 23).

He who testifies to these things says,

‘Surely I am coming soon.’ Amen. Come, Lord Jesus!

21 The grace of the Lord Jesus be with all. Amen.

from Revelation 22:20-21

*Postlude

Immovable Our Hope Remains Bob and Brittany Kauflin

Use this time to greet someone that you don’t know. If you see someone sitting or standing alone, welcome them in the name of Christ. The time after our worship is a great time for mutual, one-another ministry in Christ.

To our guests: We are glad that you have joined us for worship today. We would like to invite you to stay for a little while for coffee and conversation with our pastor and other Hershey PCA members. Coffee is in the lobby area.

To our members: After a time of fellowship and greeting (half hour), please assist our tear down team by stacking the chairs in stacks of five. We would love your help!
