Exercise 4: General Assembly drawing of an idler roller

Component description

In this exercise detail drawings of a base, idler roller, brackets, shaft and bushesare provided. Please use the dimensions provided (n.b. the idler roller drawing

has two sheets–

 the second shows the internal fillet radii). The bushes have arunning fit on the shaft and fit more tightly into either end of the central hole inthe idler roller. Each end of the shaft fits into the brackets which are mountedon the base, fixing holes aligned and grubscrews (not shown) located on theflats.

Task

1. Use an A4 sheet of squared paper and sketch a scale drawing of theassembly, using the information given on the five detail drawings, adding allsection detail as necessary. You should choose your views and partsorientation to fully illustrate the assembly to best effect using sections where

appropriate. Also, plan your parts list and position of your BOM balloons.Bring the completed sketch to the first drawing class related to this drawingexercise.The plan sketch is worth 10% of this drawing exercise. 

2. Use an A3 sheet of plain paper and add a border, projection symbol and titleblock. Put your name, DM1 group, student ID no., date, drawing title,drawing units and drawing scale in the title block.

3. Using your plan sketch and the information given on the five detail drawings,draw (to scale, using a ruler for straight edges and compasses for circles) in

3rd angle projection, three full-size orthographic views of the idler rollerassembly illustrated overleaf. You should choose your views to fully illustratethe assembly to best effect using sections where appropriate. Section planes,where used, should be indicated on the drawing in the standard way, asdescribed in lecture 4.

Add a parts list to your drawing as described in the lectures.

4. There are 2 marks if you note on your on your plan sketch the answers tofollowing questions:

1.  What is the function of the machined shoulders on the base?

2.  What is unusual about the material/process used for the idler roller?
