MRO is a complex Ecosystem

MRO future state should be built on two foundations
Big Data Platform• Need a platform that can ingest and process
in real-time large amounts of structured and unstructured data
• The tools and capabilities to deliver meaningful analytics – not just reporting
• Ability to embed in industrial processes such as MRO – actionable analytics
Cloud• Cloud is an operations architecture, not just
an IT architecture
• Programs are fundamentally federated
– Airlines, OEMs, MROs, suppliers, regulators, stations, crews, mechanics
– A cloud architecture is the right way to build the ability to serve a federated environment
• Additional benefits in scalability, agility, security

Cloud is an Operations Opportunity• Flexibility and agility
• Scalability
• Ease of access to data …
• … with better security
• Supports a federated ecosystem
• A fundamentally better architecture to support rapidly changing operations
HP offers the full range of Cloud options (Public, VPC, MPC) – ITAR and Fed-Ramp
compliant

Analytics MRO is awash with data that is not being usedStructured Data Underused …• Already in a system, possibly in a data
warehouse
– Many airlines still doing analysis in Excel
– Lack of data scientists
• Dashboards may be in place but data is difficult to “slice and dice”
• Airlines and MROs not leveraging diverse data, e.g.,
– Network data beyond cycles and hours
– Crew experience
• Finding information across systems is a major challenge (e.g., for diagnostics)
Sensor Data Exploding …• “Pipes” from the aircraft are getting
bigger
• Airlines choosing not to pay for full bandwidth
• Data storage is a challenge …
• … as is ability to analyze the data with sufficient speed to be actionable
Unstructured Data not Used• Raw log book write-ups – contextual
analytics
• Image processing
• Social media only used as a customer interface tool, not for operational insight
Impacts• Periodic adjustment of plans (Mx programs, inventory target levels, etc.) – not frequent
or near-real-time
• Existing analytics are primarily dashboards / reporting – lack of predictive analytics
• Many data sources not analyzed, analyzed infrequently, or only looked at in a silo
• Planning and execution are rarely directly impacted by analytics – rely on history and manager/operator skill
• Staff lack analytical capabilities / awareness of new tools – or over focus on tools rather than changes in decisions

Using HP Haven platform and Analytics aaS to support Operational Efficiency
Mining: Vehicle Operations
Situation• Open pit mining typically operates in remote
locations where it is difficult to manage MRO due to unplanned repairs, challenging labor model and hazardous working conditions.
Opportunity • Client had an opportunity to more fully leverage
and integrate machine telematics, equipment GPS tracking, and transactional operations data to improve efficiency through
– 1) Predictive Maintenance – Equipment Down Time Reduction;
– 2) Improve Shift Change Efficiency – Shift change over analytic
– 3) Increased Operator Safety – driver and equipment behavior analytics.
• Identified early warning indicator of part failures permitting preventative repair during scheduled maintenance
• Identification of inefficient shift changeover patterns, including; crews, scheduling, equipment and location areas for improvement.
• Identified hazardous choke points in traffic flows, based on driver and equipment behavior
• Enabled near-real time data collection and analysis
• Performed statistical simulations to provide actionable insight
• Made the data accessible from anywhere in the world
• Improve data collection, management, analysis and availability
• Analyze data and derive insight to inform actions and decisions

Context Aware Mobility
Existing use-cases• Look up and view repair manuals
• Capturing data/ pictures of wear conditions
• View, edit spare parts availability
New Use Case• Record videos of maintenance, installation
• Recognize images and play videos
Business Value• Knowledge retention
• Process automation
• Cost savings
Transformation of MRO and direct labor processes
Mobile tools have far more capability than simply viewing web pages and entering form data

Getting the value out of MRO IT
• OT and IT are not separate
– Organizational implications for IT functions and CIOs … and their partners
– Businesses are looking to IT to drive business innovation, not just “keep the lights on”
• Understand the “art of the possible” – e.g., what can embedding real-time imagery analysis and data analytics do for you?
• Focus on “Proof of Value” not “Proof of Concept” – build the business case piece by piece
