We support, we connect, we partner.
WIRE-Net strengthens manufacturing to create healthy communities and fuel economic growth. We prov ide exper t i se that i s respons ive to manufac tur ing re la ted bus inesses and the i r employees . WIRE -Net connects leaders to each other and engages them in their communities.
WIRE-Net Mission
WIRE-Net Goes Social!
Once the decision to go social was made and the online tools were purchased, the communications team jumped in with two feet. WIRE-Net published 57 blogs, sent 612 messages, received 1,166 clicks, had 536 interactions. That's 2.2 clicks per message (better than 43% of HubSpot customers with a similar number of fans and followers).
WIRE-Net gained 531 net new fans and followers and had 866 visits to our website from social media. We're on our way to being an important inuencer for Northeast Ohio manufacturing!
Youth Workforce
WIRE-Net continued working with administration and faculty at Max S. Hayes Career and Technical High School to .ensure student success in careers and lifelong learning
The community eagerly welcomed the opening of the new school building with its 21st century labs and educational equipment in August 2015.
The collaboration, Cleveland Metropolitan School District, WIRE-Net, TEAM Academy, the Greater Cleveland Partnership, local foundations, businesses, colleges, and the community, extends learning opportunities outside the classroom as early as freshman year.
WIRE-Net's workforce team of three facilitated:
u 61 paid internships at 16 companies
u 445 students attending 20 company tours
u Job shadowing opportunities for 15 students at two companies
u Two-week orientation camp for 62 incoming ninth grade students
The team also launched Encore Technical Corps Program utilizing retired technicians with the support of The Cleveland Foundation.
We provided business liaison services to the Cleveland Metropolitan School District (CMSD) to connect manufacturing companies to the classroom at such activities as our visit to Rockwell Automation on Manufacturing Day in October.
"The benet of hosting Max Hayes students is tremendous. It is an opportunity for everyone involved to see what the future holds. We are honored to be a part of a young machinist's career journey."
William Graham, Vice President, B&R Machine Company.
William Musselman (Will), a senior at Max S. Hayes High School, spends his afternoons at B&R Machine Company as a student intern. Over the past few months, he has been able to rene his machining skills and experience work in a professional setting. WIRE-Net helped connect Will with B&R Machine Company and assists in facilitating learning and performance reviews. Will is contemplating where to launch his professional career upon graduating in May 2016.
Students visited Rockwell Automation to celebrate Manufacturing Day in October.
2015 Program Highlights
2015 WIRE-Net Annual Report2
Adult Workforce
WIRE-Net workforce programs address employers' workforce needs critical to the protable operation of any manufacturing business. WIRE-Net works closely with our strategic partner, Towards Employment, by vetting candidates, offering relevant skill training, and matching job candidates with manufacturers. WIRE-Net focuses on managing the employer relationships while Towards Employment delivers quality direct services to job seekers. In its fth year, WorkAdvance is a county-wide sector-based workforce strategy designed to help ll "gateway" jobs, promoting job opportunities through skill building and career coaching.
u WorkSource program made 11 job placements at an average wage of $18.76 per hour
u Developed incumbent worker training strategy with two employers to provide backll opening for WorkAdvance entrants
u Continued planning for manufacturer-sponsored Apprenticeship Consortium focused on Industrial Maintenance Engineer certication
Accelerate Cleveland Manufacturing
Accelerate Cleveland Manufacturing (ACM) is collaboration between WIRE-Net and MAGNET to help manufacturing rms overcome barriers to growth through a unied core city manufacturing strategy made possible through the generous support of The Cleveland Foundation.
To date, 36 companies have engaged in ACM, completing 28 growth projects with 8 projects still in progress. Measuring impact in the aggregate to protect the condentiality of company records, projects generated more than $10 million in revenue impact (increase sales or cost savings) and 30 job positions were affected (6 new jobs created, 24 jobs retained).
Additional Activities:
u Two Lean Implementation Learners Groups successfully completed assisting nine rms with a project inside their plant
u Two Sales & Marketing Learners Groups were launched
u Six companies (21 people) participated in a six-week Safety Roundtable led by Certied Safety Trainer, Rick Artino from Spooner Incorporated
u 42 people attended 16-hour ERC Supervisory Certicate Training courses at WIRE-Net
CIRI
In 2015 a team of four Industrial Development Managers conducted 410 in-plant outreach visits to manufacturing and related rms in the City of Cleveland. CIRI completed 472 services primarily in the areas of General Business Assistance, Business Operation Improvements, Infrastructure, Employment & Training, and Company Finances.
CIRI engaged 18 partners including the City of Cleveland, Ohio Means Jobs, National Development Council – Grow Cuyahoga County Fund, the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses Program at Cuyahoga Community College, and MAGNET to provide these valuable services to manufacturers.
Each year the CIRI team executes service interventions to manufacturing rms where new jobs were added, jobs were at risk, operation improvements led to cost reductions, or investment was made.
u 25 interventions affected 1,353 existing direct manufacturing and related jobs with an estimated annual payroll of $84.8 million*
u 46 jobs created
u $246,500 Capital Investment
u $136,650 Operating costs reduced**
u $10,000 Increased Sales
* Payroll is estimated based on payroll data from the State of Ohio Labor Market Information System.
** Cost Reductions include reduction in operation cost associated with supply purchases, shipping, security, energy management, and employment and training costs.
32015 WIRE-Net Annual Report
GLWN
In 2015 GLWN partnered with Strategic Analysis Inc, DJW Technologies, E4tech, and EON Consultants to complete a multi-year manufacturing analysis of fuel cell systems (automotive and stationary), high pressure hydrogen storage systems, and key high value hydrogen and fuel cell subsystems and components. The analysis will span systems and components manufactured in the U.S., Europe, and Asia to determine the global cost leaders, best current manufacturing processes, key factors determining competitiveness, and potential means of cost reduction.
Energy—both cost to do business and future renewable energy standards—was very much at the forefront at WIRE-Net.
u Publicizing the Ohio Energy Future Tour online and social media
u Conducting a clean energy manufacturing and policy roundtable at American Roll Form in Painesville with Congressman David P. Joyce (OH-14).
u Asking members to send a message to Governor Kasich to reinstate Ohio's clean energy/efciency standards
