Volunteers & Services

In the midst of today's conflicts it is ironic that WW1 was called the war to end all wars, with a dream of eternal peace and harmony. 2014 saw the Centennial of the start of WW1 which began with an outlook of the nobility of going to war. Men who failed to enlist received a white feather of cowardice, while those who did endured the horrors of trench warfare. A huge loss of lives resulted and the Tower of London now displays a touching memorial of that. Its dry moat is filled with 888,246 ceramic poppies, each representing a fallen soldier from our Commonwealth allied forces. The final poppy was placed last Remembrance Day in honour of their heroism.

In contrast, WW2 was one where civilians suffered a huge toll of casualties, the worst from the atom bomb that brought a final end to that war. Prior to that, the enormous Lancaster Bomber was the triumphant workhorse of WW2, flown by British and Canadian pilots on ceaseless missions that effectively won the war in Europe. 2014 marked the

70th anniversary of D Day and in recognition of that, the only two remaining Lancasters capable of flight took part in airshows throughout Britain. One from Canada flew there to participate with its British counterpart, causing excitement among airplane buffs. Eager bids were made to join the flight, one paying $75,000 for a coveted seat on the three day flight. It was flown by a retired RCAF pilot, one of only ten worldwide still licensed to fly a Lancaster that was used for search and rescue post war. He described it as a muscle plane "like driving a truck with the power steering turned off" and requiring great skill.

Here, in New Westminster, a sculpture was unveiled in Hyack Square on October 4th, commemorating the day in 1940 when the New Westminster Regiment was deployed to join the war in Europe. The sculpture presents the image of a small boy reaching for his father's outstretched hand, as he marched in formation down 8th street. It memorializes the famous photo that was called "Wait for me Daddy" and is a poignant reminder of the effect war has on the families left behind.

Bus Trip Advice Arrive 15 minutes prior to departure. Pay attention to when and where the bus will pick you up for the trip home. The bus will not wait for any late-comers. Trip leaders will make every effort to locate you but the bus will leave as scheduled. If you are not returning with the bus, please sign off with the trip leader.

Return times are approximate. Please make travel arrangements for returning home with this in mind.

Dress appropriately for the weather and trip. We do not assign seats. Trip leaders will assist those with mobility concerns.

When you register, inform the front desk if you need to bring a wheelchair or a walker. We require a minimum two week notification to arrange wheelchair transportation. We do our best to make the trip accessible and accommodate participation.

For trips to the USA, bring your valid travel documentation (passport, enhanced drivers licence). It is your responsibility to buy extra medical insurance. Be aware that laws prohibit some merchandise from being brought back across the border. BC Ferries offers a discount to seniors over 65. If you are under 65, you must pay the full ferry fare.

NOTE: Bus trip pick up spots are at Dogwood and Glen Pine (Spirit Square on Burlington Drive across from City Hall, meet in the Hub when Glen Pine is open). These are the only designated stops or pick ups. Depending on the destination, the bus will pick up at Dogwood or Glen Pine first. Prices include school bus transportation unless otherwise stated.

REFUND POLICY: Full refund shall be issued if the request is made 5 days in advance of the bus trip. No refund under 5 days. As many trips are prepaid, we need ample time to find a replacement for last minute cancellations.

One week prior to a bus trip, if there is space remaining, a non-annual pass holder may register.

If a bus trip is full, place your name on the wait list. There is a strong possibility that another bus can be booked or another day planned.

For theatre performances, we try our best to have you sit with whom you wish but there is no guarantee.

If you need seating assistance, please speak to your designated trip leaders before boarding the bus. They can be identified by their name tags.

Visit coquitlam.ca/50plus to subscribe to the Bus Trips List Serv, with updates on new trips and related information.

Writing Down Your Life: Get Started on Your StoryYour times were unique, your life is unique. Draw from the experience of your lifetime to write the ordinary stories of everyday—when colour TV was new, Sputnik went up, children picked berries in the summer and played kick-the-can and more. Your stories will be astonishing to future generations of your family like stories of horse-drawn ploughs and outhouses are to you.

Bring a fresh notebook or your laptop, a pen, and your memories to generate ideas together. Facilitated by Diana Cruchley.
