H. Taylor Howard

T. Howard FoundationMission Statement

(1932-2002)

The T. Howard Foundation was named after H. Taylor Howard, an American scientist, radio engineer, Stanford University Emeritus Professor, visionary, and inventor of the technology used today by the cable, satellite, and telecommunications industries. His career in radio engineering and space sciences spanned 50 years.

His separate pursuits involving communications, inventions, entrepreneurship, and advocacy resulted in Taylor’s wide recognition as the “father” of the satellite-to-home television industry. In 1976, he demonstrated that American satellite transmission could be received directly in homes without need for a ground distribution station. Most importantly, he believed that the very technology he helped create would one day be instrumental in uniting people from around the world.

The T. Howard Foundation is honored to have Taylor as its namesake. From the Foundation’s inception in 1994 until 2002, he generously donated his time as a member of the Board of Directors and to the THF interns.

The mission of the T. Howard Foundation is to diversify the multimedia and entertainment industry by increasing the representation of minority young men and women within the industry. This is accomplished via a comprehensive program for minority college students that includes the following:

• an internship program that gives students a working knowledge of the industry as well as hands-on experience;

• professional development via a comprehensive orientation that prepares students for their internship in a corporate environment;

• recruiting students, and providing career awareness via information about various opportunities within the industry;

• raising industry awareness and recruiting companies to host T. Howard interns.

Message from the ChairmanWelcome to the 22nd Annual T. Howard Foundation Diversity Awards Dinner.

Congratulations to this year’s honorees: Michael Schwimmer, CEO, Fuse Media who is receiving the Executive Leadership Award; filmmaker, actor and philanthropist Tyler Perry, recipient of the Champion Award; and to AXS TV and the National Cable Telecommunications Association, recipients of the Diversity Partners Award for their longstanding support of the Foundation. We commend and thank you and your organizations for your demonstrated commitment to diversity.

As our industry continues to grow in multicultural and international markets, the need for our workforce to reflect the diversity of our customers increases. The T. Howard Foundation has positioned itself to be a resource for the diverse talent that our industry needs, now and into the future. We are developing our programs and services to not only identify qualified talent through our recruitment, screening and selection process but also to prepare the talent through our orientation and ongoing professional development services. Our Internship and Talent Development Programs are designed to meet the needs of our industry partners and develop the professional skills of our intern alumni. As media and entertainment companies strive to connect with broader and more distinct audiences, the need for high-caliber diverse talent has never been greater and more compelling.

On behalf of the T. Howard Foundation board, I want to express our sincere gratitude to all of you for your generous support. It is through your ongoing commitment and interest that we’ve been able to continue the Foundation’s mission to increase diversity in the media industry.

Thanks to Jo Pamphile, THF President & CEO, and her staff for all their great work and their dedication to diversity through their work with the industry. I’d also like to recognize my fellow board members for devoting their time and talent to the Foundation.

A special note of appreciation to my colleague, Tom Hayden, for his leadership as Chairman of the Foundation for the past four years. The Foundation flourished under his stewardship and I am truly honored to have the opportunity now to serve in this role and continue to build on the fine work that Jo, Tom and the entire Board have done to enhance diversity in our industry.

Thank you all for your enormous generosity to the T. Howard Foundation. Enjoy the evening and I look forward to seeing you.

Sincerely,

Rob Doodian Chairman, T. Howard Foundation Executive Vice President, Human Resources, AMC Networks, Inc.

Message from the PresidentGood Evening Friends and Distinguished Guests,

It is my pleasure to welcome you to our annual celebration of diversity. This event gives us the opportunity to recognize individuals and corporations who share our commitment to increasing diversity in the media and entertainment industry.

Tonight we are honoring two exceptional leaders who have made their mark in the area of diversity, Michael Schwimmer, CEO, Fuse Media and Tyler Perry, Filmmaker, Actor and Philanthropist, both weaving diversity into the fabric of the work they do. As CEO of Fuse Media, Michael is head of the premier English language network that provides music and entertainment for the Latino and multicultural community. Tyler Perry, as an actor and filmmaker, has reached diverse audiences from all walks of life who have seen his plays on stage, his films in movie theatres and his popular programs on cable television.

In addition to our honorees, this year we inaugurate T. Howard Foundation’s Diversity Partners Awards, to be presented to those who have been steadfast and consistent in their support of the Dinner. AXS TV and NCTA are our first recipients of this recognition. We plan to make this award a part of our annual event.

An important role in the success of this evening is that of the dinner chairs. With that in mind, I wish to express our sincere appreciation for this year’s dinner chairs: Ozzie Areu, Tyler Perry Studios; Michael Biard, Fox Networks; Charlie Ergen, DISH Network, LLC; Judi Lopez, Fuse Media; Kenneth Sharkey, PricewaterhouseCoopers, LLC; and Aaron Slator, AT&T Services, Inc.

On behalf of the team at T. Howard, I thank you, our supporters, who make it possible for us to maintain a standard of excellence in the delivery of our programs and services. In 2014, we set a new record of 107 intern placements in the industry — 97 summer interns and 10 fall interns. We also set a record for the number of Foundation alumni who were hired into the industry — 48 this past year. The Foundation also launched the Talent Development Program, providing professional support and guidance to our alumni to help them get hired into the industry and move up in their company. Two new initiatives, Diversity Advancement and Diversity Partners, target media companies and ad agencies/PR firms, respectively, that are seeking diverse talent to fill positions entry level and above.

In closing, I want to thank our Board of Directors and my T. Howard team, all dedicated and committed to fulfilling the mission of the Foundation. Working together, we are increasing diversity in the media and entertainment industry.

Enjoy the evening.

The company’s holdings include the national music cable network Fuse, and NUVOtv, the leader in providing English-language entertainment for U.S. Latinos, embodying the spirit, energy and richness of modern Latino culture. Executive Leadership AwardMICHAEL SCHWIMMER Chief Executive Officer Fuse Media

As CEO of Fuse Media, Michael Schwimmer oversees cable television networks NUVOtv (formerly SíTV), the premier English-language destination for Latino entertainment, and national music network Fuse. Schwimmer brings deep industry and cultural expertise to both networks, which are dedicated to delivering compelling entertainment in an authentic voice for young Latino and multicultural viewers.

Joining SíTV’s board of directors in 2003, Schwimmer was a key force behind the network’s commercial launch in 2004. He later took the helm of the network in 2005, stewarding its growth and overseeing its rebrand to NUVOtv in 2011. In 2012, Schwimmer engineered a historic, multifaceted partnership with iconic superstar and entrepreneur Jennifer Lopez for a creative alliance to bolster NUVOtv’s market awareness and content offerings. Lopez collaborates closely with NUVOtv on marketing, programming and production, in conjunction with Nuyorican Productions, Lopez’ production company.

In 2014, Schwimmer spearheaded SíTV Media’s $226 million acquisition of Fuse from the Madison Square Garden Company, who also retained a minority ownership interest in SíTV Media. Fuse is currently available in 73 million U.S. homes, and is dedicated largely to music and related programming, complementing well NUVOtv’s focus on the young Latino audience.

Prior to SíTV Media, Schwimmer enjoyed a long tenure at EchoStar Communications, joining its then nascent DBS satellite business (DISH Network) in 1996. As executive vice president of programming and marketing, Schwimmer oversaw all marketing initiatives, acquisition and packaging of traditional subscription and on demand video programming, as well as advanced interactive TV services, television advertising sales and international programming. In addition, Schwimmer oversaw the importation and U.S. launch of over 100 foreign language television channels from countries around the world for delivery to America’s immigrant populations.

Also while at EchoStar, he conceived and engineered the launch of the “Dish Latino” programming platform in 1998. Revolutionary at the time, this programming package addressed the underserved Spanish-dominant Latino audience.

Schwimmer’s passion for diversity in media, and the Latino community in particular, can be traced to his school days in Southern California. After teaching himself to speak fluent Spanish by the age of 15, he later received his B.A. in Spanish and lived in Spain. Focusing his attention on Latin America after graduating law school, Schwimmer moved to Brazil, where he practiced international law from 1988 to 1992 at Baker & McKenzie’s Sao Paulo office.

Schwimmer and his Brazilian wife, Flavia, currently reside in Southern California with their two children.

TYLER PERRY Filmmaker, Actor and Philanthropist

Tyler Perry is an established American actor, director, screenwriter, producer, playwright and author. Born into poverty and raised in a household scarred by abuse, Tyler fought from a young age to find the strength, faith and perseverance that would later form the foundations of his work. Tyler started his career writing plays, many of which later became the inspiration for his film projects and included the introduction of the now-legendary Madea character, played by Tyler himself. Tyler’s first feature film, Diary of a Mad Black Woman, debuted at number one nationwide in 2005. His ensuing films, Madea's Family Reunion, Daddy's Little Girls, Why Did I Get Married?, Meet The Browns, The Family That Preys, I Can Do Bad All by Myself, Why Did I Get Married Too?, For Colored Girls, Madea's Big, Happy Family, Good Deeds and Madea's Witness Protection have all been met with massive commercial success, delighting audiences across America and around the world. He also starred in the Rob Cohen directed Alex Cross, helped release Academy Award-nominated Precious, and most recently, garnered rave reviews for his role opposite Ben Affleck in David Fincher’s Gone Girl. Tyler has also made his mark in the television space with several series.

In 2007, Tyler expanded his reach to television with the TBS series House of Payne, the highest-rated first-run syndicated cable show at the time, and later launched the equally successful Meet the Browns on the same network. In late 2012, Tyler teamed up with Oprah Winfrey in an exclusive deal to bring scripted programming to her cable network, OWN, and launched with the half-hour sitcom Love Thy Neighbor, and the hour-long drama The Haves and The Have Nots, which made its debut in 2013 and has posted the network’s highest series ratings to date. This past fall, OWN premiered Tyler's second successful television drama, If Loving You Is Wrong.

MARK CUBAN Chairman, CEO, and President AXS TVAXS TV and HDNet Movies are honored to be recognized by the T. Howard Foundation as one of the first recipients of its Diversity Partners Award. NCTA is the principal trade association for the U.S. cable industry, representing cable operators serving more than 90 percent of the nation's cable television households and more than 200 cable program networks. The cable industry is the nation’s largest broadband provider of high-speed Internet access, serving more than 54 million customers, after investing $230 billion since 1996 to build two-way interactive networks with fiber optic technology. Cable companies also provide state-of-the-art digital telephone service to more than 28 million American consumers.

MICHAEL K. POWELLPresident & Chief Executive Officer National Cable & Telecommunications Association (NCTA)Our industry has a long and proud history of demonstrating our commitment to diversity — not for diversity’s sake — but as a core industry value. Yet as industry leaders acknowledged at the founding of the T. Howard Foundation in 1994, and as we would continue to submit today, our goal has not been fully achieved.

As we all know, we must continue to evolve our industry with leaders and a work force that mirror the composition of our American society. We must also strive to fully reflect, in the creation and display of our content, the many faces of the consumers who so eagerly embrace it. As we recognize the importance of diversity in our institutions, governments, and companies, we must re-commit to the notion that there still is work to be done.

An intense focus on diversity is part of our DNA at NCTA. Working through the Walter Kaitz Foundation, and in league with industry associations and corporate initiatives that drive the principles of diversity through everything we do, we aspire to make the Internet and Television industry a national leader in diversity efforts.

That’s why we are so honored to be at tonight’s T. Howard dinner. And it’s also why we are so supportive of the Foundation’s sterling internship program, which brings through the doors of our companies and organizations, some of the brightest young people who will define our business for generations to come.

We salute the work of the T. Howard Foundation, and pledge continuing support for its noble objectives.

BE A MENTOR OR HOST A SUMMER INTERN

Become a Mentor

The T. Howard Foundation is seeking experienced media industry professionals to participate in our mentorship program. Each summer our mentors share their time, talents, and experiences with mentees and serve as role models, advocates, and valuable resources to these emerging leaders. All we require is an interest in giving back and at least two years of professional work experience.

To learn more about becoming a mentor, stop by the mentor table in the silent auction area tonight. You can also contact Karla Morrison at [email protected] or call her at 301-588-6767 Ext. 224.

Become a Host Company

It’s not too late to request a summer 2015 intern for your company or department! If your company is committed to increasing ethnic diversity in the media and entertainment industry workforce, we’d like to work with you to place highly qualified and talented minority students into professional internship positions.

T. Howard Foundation is presently placing 2015 summer interns with our host company partners. If you are interested in becoming a host company for this summer, stop by the mentor table in the silent auction area for more information. You can also write to Karla Morrison at email [email protected] or call her at 301-588-6767 Ext. 224.

Thank you!
