CLOSING GENERAL SESSIONKeynote Speaker

OPENING GENERAL SESSIONKeynote Speaker

Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, July 22 , 23, 24, 2015

Keynote Speaker

Lack of active play in children’s built environment is a major contributor to the growing sedentary life style of children. Nana Robertson, Ph.D., professor of early childhood education at Seminole State College in Sanford Florida, recently conducted research focused on the role active play has in childcare centers and how factors such as licensing, accreditation, college educated teachers, and the lack of professional development plays a role in the amount of quality time a child is active on a daily basis. Dr. Robertson’s presentation will discuss her findings that 78% of a child’s day is spent in sedentary activities along with what are some simple practices we can initiate to increase active play in our childcare centers.

Jeff Johnson is engaging, motivating, entertaining, and inspirational. He opened Explorations Early Learning, a family child care program, in 2003 with his wife, Tasha, after spending 16 years directing a child care center and community center for a large non-profit agency. Their program focused on emergent learning in a play-based and child-centered environment. According to Johnson, "The best thing about our program is that our days are full of laughs, conversation, play, exploration, discoveries, and fun. We enjoyed creating an environment conducive to 'light bulb moments'—those moments where kids grasp new ideas.” They kept their program small to accommodate Johnson’s writing and speaking schedule. In 2013, they closed their family child care program and retired to pursue their hobbies: writing books, speaking at early learning events, making toys, recording podcasts, and advocating for child-led play and caregiver self-care. Luckily, these hobbies have become full-time jobs. Johnson presents at early learning conferences all over the United States, Canada and has even keynoted an international conference in Cork, Ireland. He is the author of nine books and always has a new book in the works. Johnson’s audience, as a writer and speaker, is the hardworking caregivers dedicated to children: early care and education professionals, teachers, and parents.

Richard Cohen, M.A., has been an early childhood professional for over twenty seven years. He describes "the best jobs of my life": infant classroom teacher, a toddler classroom teacher, a preschool classroom teacher and a kindergarten teacher! For the past sixteen years, he has traveled the world as a motivational speaker/instructor, facilitating fun, innovative, thought-provoking, interactive adult learning experiences for communities of early childhood teachers, administrators, caregivers and parents. Cohen was the Associate Chief Officer of the Council for Professional Recognition in Washington, D.C, overseeing the transformation of the Child Development Associate (CDA) credential. While at the Council, he authored the new Infant/Toddler, Preschool and Family Child care Editions of the national Competency Standards books and co-authored/edited the new comprehensive textbook "Essentials for Working with Young Children." Cohen served as Senior Director of Professional Development at the National Association of Child Care Resource & Referral Agencies (NACCRRA) where he co-authored the NAEYC Professional Development Glossary and served as the association's project design lead for Michelle Obama's Let's Move! Child Care resources.
