Cargo TheftBSI forecasts that cargo theft losses in 2014 will amount to $23.3 billion globally. BSI’s cargo theft risk indicator
analyzes and quantifies the likelihood of the theft or robbery of cargo in a given country. BSI’s cargo theft
risk rating addresses the threat of hijacking, and theft from trucks and warehouses.
Unmanifested CargoBSI reported that countries with a High or Severe threat of unmanifested cargo
introduction exported $1.8 trillion of goods in 2013. BSI identifies unmanifested
cargo as the threat posed by the introduction of contraband into legitimate
cargo. BSI’s intelligence analyzes and quantifies the risk of drugs, weapons,
and weapons of mass destruction being introduced into a shipment of
legitimate goods.
Counterfeit ProductionDespite a six-month crackdown on counterfeiters in China, the
country still accounted for 73% of BSI’s recorded counterfeit
incidents worldwide. These counterfeit goods typically bear the
brand or trade name of legitimate goods and violate trademark
and intellectual property rights laws. BSI’s intelligence analyzes
and quantifies the threat posed by the production and exportation
of forged or imitation goods in a given country.
Supply Chain TerrorismThe supply chain is targeted by terrorist organizations on average every
7 days, according to BSI Intelligence. BSI recorded terrorist attacks in 15
different countries in 2013, including Colombia, Egypt, India, and Thailand.
BSI classifies supply chain terrorism as the unlawful use of force against persons
or property with the intent to intimidate or coerce a government or civilian population
for political or economic gain. BSI analyzes and quantifies the risk of terrorist attacks
against any part of the supply chain, including air, rail, truck, or sea transport.
Anti-Western Terrorism Countries with a High or Severe threat of anti-Western terrorism exported $1.25 trillion of goods in 2013. BSI analyzes and quantifies
terrorist attacks directed at the supply chain intended to disrupt the flow of goods associated with Western
countries, including the United States, Canada, Western Europe, Australia and New Zealand.
Cargo theft, contraband smuggling, and supply chain terrorist attacks can negatively disrupt the flow of your supply chain and impact your bottom
line. Criminals are becoming more sophisticated in targeting high load shipments by embedding infiltrators into logistics companies, and utilizing
GPS jamming devices and aggressive cargo hijacking strategies. To reduce your exposure to these global security threats, you must know who your
suppliers are and what they are doing. Understanding where your vulnerable points are will allow your organization to effectively mitigate
global security risks and protect your supply chain.
