Samuel A. Cothran1915-2010
Samuel Alexander Cothran’s journalism career cut a wide swath through South Carolina. He began his near 50-year career as a reporter in Greenwood at the Index-Journal. He was a reporter, assistant city editor, city editor and managing editor in Charleston at Th e News & Courier. He fi nished his career as publisher and editor of the Aiken Standard, and chairman of the board and president of Aiken Communications. Cothran was a fi ne writer and precise editor. He had a sound sense for business and a special touch for managing people. Th roughout his life and career, he was a principled and conscientious leader. His work served to better the publications where he was employed and the communities that they served. Cothran was born in Laurens in 1915. He attended Davidson College, where he was managing editor of Th e Davidsonian, and was a Cum Laude graduate of the University of South Carolina. As a college student, he served as a special correspondent for Th e Charlotte Observer and did summer work at the Index-Journal in Greenwood. In 1939, he joined the reporting staff of Th e News and Courier in Charleston. As a young reporter, he secured an exclusive interview with presidential adviser Bernard Baruch at the Hobcaw Barony. His work in Charleston was soon interrupted by service in the U.S. Army Infantry in the European Th eater during World War II. He slept in Stonehenge to avoid German bombings. And an early recognition of his leadership skills was his promotion to lieutenant colonel while still in his 20s. In 1945, he returned to Th e News and Courier and became assistant city editor, city editor, and then managing editor in 1952. Cothran hired the fi rst African American reporter at Th e News & Courier. Indeed, Rudolph “Rudy” Pyatt was the fi rst black reporter to serve at any major newspaper in the South. Th e News & Courier consistently led the state in Press Association awards. Also under his leadership, Th e News & Courier published photos of the overhead wires at the Four Corners of Law. Th at led to SCE&G placing the wires underground. When Evening Post Publishing Company purchased the Aiken Standard and Review in 1968, Cothran was chosen to head the operation. He was editor and publisher, and chairman of the board and president of Aiken Communications. He immediately set forth modernizing both the physical plant and the newspaper
operation of what is now the Aiken Standard. Cothran oversaw the construction of the building where the newspaper is now housed. And when the newspaper left its previous offi ce for its new home, it also converted from hot type to off set printing overnight. Cothran’s task in Aiken was not an easy one. With a circulation of roughly 2,000, the fi rst month’s circulation revenues under his leadership were just $315. It took just one roll of newsprint a day to print the paper. But when he retired in 1989, the Aiken Standard had grown to 15,000 in paid circulation and had added a Sunday edition. In Aiken, Cothran also provided a strong voice for the community. His editorials surrounding the need for a new hospital were controversial but also crucial to the modernization of health care. Health care in the community had been declared to be in a crisis state. Th e existing county hospital was so antiquated that new physicians would not come to practice in Aiken. Practices of the few existing doctors were so full that they could not add new patients. Cothran quickly perceived that because the eastern portion of the county was close to health care in Columbia and the western close to Augusta health care that any vote for taxes to fund another public hospital was doomed. Many in the community did not want to hear that. But his consistent and pointed editorials won the day for a private hospital to be approved. After the new hospital was constructed, a signifi cant volume of new physicians — and specialists — fl owed into Aiken. Cothran’s mark with other endeavors is still felt in the community. He was involved in several philanthropic, church and community organizations. Cothran was a member of several professional organizations, including the S.C. Press Association, the Southern Newspaper Publishers Association and the National Newspaper Association. He once served as president of the S.C. Associated Press News Council. In 1993, he was awarded the USC Aiken Distinguished Citizen Award. And based on his strong infl uence both at the newspaper and in the community, Cothran was named Aiken’s Man of the Year in 1989 by the Greater Aiken Chamber of Commerce. Cothran retired at age 73 in 1989. He died in January of 2010.

Wilton E. Hall1901-1980
Born March 11, 1901, in Starr, Wilton E. Hall attended the public schools and Furman University. In 1924, Hall became editor and publisher of the Anderson Independent, which he merged with the Anderson Daily Tribune in 1925 to create the Anderson Independent-Tribune. Th e newspaper resumed its original name, the Anderson Independent, in 1950. From 1925 to 1928, Hall also published Blease’s Weekly, a newspaper established to advance and publicize the political position of former Governor and Senator Coleman Blease. In 1930, Hall bought the Anderson Daily Mail, which was published Monday through Saturday afternoons. In 1935, he established radio station WAIM-AM. From 1934 to 1938, he was chairman of the South Carolina Planning Board and was appointed on November 20, 1944, as a Democrat to the United States Senate to fi ll the vacancy caused by the death of Ellison D. Smith. Hall served from November 20, 1944, to January 3, 1945, and was not a candidate for election to the full term. He was succeeded by Olin D. Johnston and resumed the newspaper publishing business as publisher of the Anderson Independent and the Daily Mail of South Carolina. He was president of the South Carolina Press Association in 1945. He was also founder of television station WAIM-TV in 1953 and owner of radio stations WAIM-AM and WCAC-FM and publisher of Quote Magazine. On February 1, 1972, Hall sold both newspapers to Harte-Hanks, Inc., which later became Harte-Hanks Communications Inc. Hall lived in Anderson until he died on Feb. 25,1980, and is buried at Forest Lawn Memorial Park. His widow, Mary L. Hall, died in 1992.

The S.C. Journalism Hall of Fame was established in 1973 to recognize and honor men and women who have excelled in their craft and made significant contributions to journalism and their communities.
Only 67 newspaper journalists – from Colonial and Civil War days to the present – have been chosen by their peers for this recognition. Honorees must have made their journalistic reputation in South Carolina. If the reputation reflects achievements outside the state, the nominee must have been a native of South Carolina. Nominees must have been deceased for four or more years.
The S.C. Hall of Fame began in 1972 when SCPA President William L. Kinney Jr., of Bennettsville, acting on a suggestion from Secretary-Manager Reid H. Montgomery, set in motion activities that led to the establishment of a S.C. Press Association Hall of Fame. The first Hall of Fame inductees were presented at the SCPA Winter Meeting in 1973.
Honorees are chosen by the press association’s Hall of Fame committee. This year’s committee was comprised of John Heath, retired from Beaufort Gazette; Tom McLean, retired from The State; Pat McNeely, retired from the University of South Carolina's School of Journalism and Louis Sossamon, retired from The Gaffney Ledger.
