The Governor’s Glow

As I write this, the Big Game hasn’t kicked off yet, but by the time you read this we’ll know if PDG Don Gregory has brought the Seahawks any luck down in Glendale…if the Hawks win, thank Don…if they lose, you’ll know exactly who to take it out on!

We all slow down during the holidays, but boy has January been a busy month all around the District. For me it started with what is called Blue Denim, where 9 governor lines from around the Northwest meet in Seattle for a weekend of training. Then a teleconference with our AGs. A site visit to the Tulalip Resort with the Conference team (remember to sign up). Ezra and I have been visiting a few clubs presenting various TRF awards for last year’s giving. Many thanks to Kay Cook and Jean Withers for putting this informative class together and to AG Terry Higashiyama for again hosting us at the Renton City Hall ( Home of the Seahawks).

Man in iron lung discovers Rotary

Paul Alexander contracted polio during a major U.S. outbreak of the disease in the late 1950s, and has lived in an iron lung since. It wasn’t until a business meeting with a club member in Texas last year that he learned about Rotary’s fight to eradicate the disease. Read more of Alexander’s story

New Openings for the Innovative and Flexible Rotary Club Pilot:

One of the many ways that Rotary clubs around the world have tested new innovations within their club is with the Innovative and Flexible Rotary Club pilot. This pilot has recently been approved for expansion by the Board of Directors and allows for clubs to test variations to the normal club structure not allowed by the Standard Rotary Club Constitution. To learn more about this pilot, please visit the Guidelines and FAQ page. Applications for the 2015-17 Innovative and Flexible Rotary Club pilot are due by 31 March 2015. Apply Today!

District 5030 Social Media Committee

A team of committed D5030 Rotarians have come together to create the first ever District Social Media Committee. Together, they are excited to nurture D5030 social media communities (like LinkedIn and Facebook) so that people become inspired, empowered, and connected. Pictured above are some members of the committee celebrating a successful launch and get to know each other at The Pyramid Alehouse.

District Disaster Preparedness Initiative District 5030 is proud to announce the formation of a Disaster Preparedness Task Force.

The primary focus of the Task Force is to encourage and support our Rotary clubs in preparing their members to be self-reliant in the wake of major natural or man-caused disasters.

A team is available to speak with your club. Rotarians will learn how to effectively prepare their homes and families to deal with the dangers and inconvenience of large scale incidents. Rotarians will also be supplied with training and preparedness materials to help develop a club response program.

The Task Force expects to host a break-out session at the District Conference. All District 5030 Rotarians and spouses are encouraged to attend. For information about serving as your club's Preparedness Coordinator, contact Dr. Leigh Readdy at [email protected] or PDG Mike Montgomery at [email protected]

In 2015 the Rotary Club of Maple Valley launched a new initiative to support efforts to train new farmers and incubate new farms. The club has a long tradition of volunteerism and monetary support for the Maple Valley Food Bank and the district’s Rotary First Harvest food bank packaging efforts. This new initiative connects farmers-in-training with food bank staff to plan, plant, grow, harvest, clean, package and deliver fresh local produce to the Maple Valley Food Bank.

“When we learned about Seattle Tilth’s new farmer incubation program, it seemed like a perfect opportunity to combine Rotary’s commitment to vocations with our club’s desire to lend a hand to our neighbors in need.” said club president elect John Sheller. The club raised $18,000 at their October 2014 annual gala and auction for this project. Food bank director Lila Henderson met with Farmworks managers to plan produce delivery for the full 24-week 2015 growing season, in support of the 300+ visitors they serve each week.

“If this proves successful, there is potential to expand this beyond our club to a multi-club or event district level of engagement. Long term, there could be farmers in our area that can credit Rotary’s food bank support with helping them get established in their chosen vocation.” Sheller stated.

The club is partnering with Seattle Tilth’s Farm Works farmer incubation program, which assists new farmers with training, equipment, marketing and delivery of produce to customers.

Returning from the annual International Assembly, District Governor-elect Terry Pickering completed his final week of training, joining 538 Governors-elect from around the world. Held in San Diego the team met with Rotary International President-elect Ravi Ravindran where he disclosed the annual theme for 2015/2016 “Be a gift to the world”. President Ravi refers to his team as “World Class Governors!” The week-long training session included workshops to learn more about The Rotary Foundation, Membership, Youth Service and as well, an opportunity to build working relationships with fellow governors.

Turning to District 5030 training and preparation for the new Rotary year, Terry has planned our Pre-PETS program for Saturday February 21 8:00am to 1:00pm and will be held at the Mercer Island Community Center. Following is President-Elect Training held the weekend of March 6, 7 and 8 at the SeaTac Double Tree. And, the annual District Training Assembly will be held Saturday May 2 at the Mercer Island Community Center 8:00am to 12:30pm. Terry welcomes three new Assistant Governors to the team; Vijya Patel (Seattle International District Club), Patricia Turner (Mercer Island Club) and Marella Alejandrino (University District Club).
