PRO WORKSHOPS Nur turing Asia's emerging photographic ta lent
Since 2005, our annual series of tuition-free professional workshops has been challenging emerging photographic talents from Asia to take their craft to the next level. In 2015, were proud to welcome our 11th batch of professional 28 workshop participants from 12 countries from all over Asia.
Selected from our open call for applications on the strength of their photography portfolio and a written personal statement, the participants were led by six international photographers from diverse backgrounds and areas of expertise. In keeping with the original spirit of sharing on which the workshops were founded, all our tutors volunteer to be a part of the non-profit educational initiative.
From an exploration of the force and fragility of human relationships to a contemporary portrayal of Cambodian traditions, the incredible range of work was produced by this year’s participants were showcased at our Closing Night as the finale of our festival programme.
“They asked difficult questions, probed our intentions and taught me a different way of seeing. I pushed boundaries that I’ve never crossed before.”
- GRACE BAEY
“The valuable lessons I received at the workshop have inspired me to take a newer perspective and a fresh approach to my ongoing practices.”

THE SPACE BETWEEN USHaving gone through a separation recently, I was drawn to the story of Mong and Ponleak. It is not uncommon for LGBT couples to face parental disapproval, even rejection, especially in Asia. Despite Ponleak’s family’s continued unacceptance of his relationship with Mong, a transgender woman, they’re trying hard to hold on to each other. Their love is one of distance mixed with desire, tenderness with tension, and passion compounded by the burden of parental pressure. Through Mong and Ponleak, I explore the force and fragility of relationships, even as they negotiate their space and identity as individuals and a couple.
BOUNDIn Khmer tradition a white thread has been always been used in weddings amongst many other ceremonies. In life husband and wife will face many of both good and bad things together. In this photo series I have used the white thread to bind them together showing the happiness and other problems they face as marriage.

WE LIVE HERETon Le Sap is South East Asia’s largest freshwater lake, it provided the necessary conditions for the settlement of the mighty Angkorian kingdom. The lake’s most popular spot, Chong Kneas, is a floating village that today has become a tourist trap and is one of the most visited spots in South East Asia. The cost to enter the village is US$20 but its inhabitants have seen little benefit from this influx of cash paid to government officials. To me the village is nothing but a zoo where the locals are essentially a source of entertainment. At dusk, when the tourists and officials leave, the village returns to its old way of life till sunrise.

FRAGILE MEMORIESFragile Memories is a collection of visual translation of the memories about the Cambodian civil war that are recounted everyday by the tour guides in Siem Reap War Museum. Memories and stories that are either experienced first-hand during the war or passed on to them by their fathers. It is a collection of fragility and strength that co-exist in the minds of these tour guides and all of the people that were affected by the war.

EXHIBITIONSCreating visual impact in Siem Reap's public spaces
Over the past decade, it has been rewarding for us to play a role in ushering some of the region’s best photographers onto the international stage, creating greater exposure for their work and the issues they cover.
Curated by Programme Coordinator Françoise Callier from our annual open call for submissions, the 11th Edition’s festival programme of exhibitions and projection evenings featured the work of over 130 photographers from 45 countries. Consistent with our mission of highlighting Asian talent, almost half the programme showcased work from Asian photographers.

2015 Themed Projection: The Impact Project
First launched in 2014, The Impact Project is a themed projection evening highlighting photography projects about individuals, groups, or small organisations creating a positive impact on social or environmental issues. From the Skateistan movement to photography by juvenile immates in Malawi and the efforts of a madrasah caring for orphaned refugees, the evening served to balance the overwhelming mass of ‘negative’ news portrayed in mainstream media.

Canon Photo Clinic
For the third year, we are proud to once again host the Canon Photo Clinic, a prize offered to all winners of the annual Canon Photomarathon. Led by international photographer and lecturer Dean Cox, this year’s Photo Clinic included a portfolio review of all participants’ work, outdoor practical shooting sessions at Siem Reap’s largest wholesale market and Phnom Krom, and of course, joining in the events of this year’s festival.
2015 LECTURER: DEAN COX Dean Cox splits his professional life across three tracks: as a photojournalist, documentary photographer, and multimedia journalist primarily covering former communist countries of Central and Eastern Europe, Central Asia, the Caucasus, Western Europe, Northern Europe, and Hong Kong. He is the photo and multimedia editor for EurasiaNet, and also a lecturer to international graduate and undergraduate students at Hong Kong Baptist University’s department of journalism. As a photojournalist, Dean has worked on contract for The Associated Press, CBS News, The New York Times, IHT, Bloomberg, and EurasiaNet, in addition to being published for 20+ years in international news publications and websites.

ANJALI PHOTO WORKSHOPSNurturing and encouraging the innate creativity of children
Initiated in 2005 by Magnum photographer Antoine D’Agata, the Anjali Photo Workshops engages the children of Anjali House in creative expression through photography. The workshop encourages their innate creativity – an important part of education, and a key tool in fostering scholastic development, self-confidence, and social interaction.
During the 10-day workshop, the children were guided by volunteer photographers and brought on excursions to a variety of places in Siem Reap. The older participants also bring their cameras home to continue photographing their daily lives.
Anjali House is an independent NGO founded by the Angkor Photo Association in 2005. Today, it provides food, healthcare and education to over 110 underprivileged children in Siem Reap.

Ch i ld ren's Day !
We went to the circus! Thanks to the generous team at Phare, The Cambodian Circus for hosting this year’s Children’s Day, a special part of the festival programme dedicated to the young and young-at-heart. The kids of Anjali House were treated to special circus workshops led by Phare’s talented performers before being treated to a ‘Kids’ Edition’ of our projections programme. The highlight, as always, is when we get to see the kids’ photographs created during the workshops. Unpredictable, fresh, humorous and insightful – it was a true privilege to get a gilmpse of their world.

Angkor Photo Festival
Angkor Photo Festival & Workshops
(APFW) kicks off its 11th edition
this coming December 5 with a
wide range of works on the menu.
As per usual, the festival program includes a
lineup of seven projection evenings and seven
exhibitions showcasing the works of famous
and emerging artists both from the region and
globally.
The styles vary, as do the subjects, but the
focus tends to remain on story-telling and
photojournalism, an approach to photography
APFW has always promoted for its power to
inform and to affect change.
This year’s projections will include an evening
titled The Impact Project. The themed series
focuses on individuals, groups, or small organ-
isations that are having a positive impact on
social or environmental issues.
Of particular note this year among the selection
of exhibitions is a collection extracted from
the archives of the École française d’Extrême
Orient (E.F.E.O.). More than 70 years are
refelected in the show - images collected by
architects, epigraphists and archeologists,
which paint a picture of 20th century Cambodia.
Khmer Times picks displayed among these pages
include: Anne Ackerman’s Wakaliwood, a
study of a small community of filmmakers
operating out of Uganda’s capital city slum
Wakaliga; Maryam Ashrafi’s Kurdish Women
Fighters, which focuses on the daily life of
female fighters in Iraq and Syria; Zalmaï’s
Dreads and Dream, a body of work that repre-
sents 5 years of documenting his native war-torn
Afghanistan; Miquel Dewever Plana’s Hach
Winik, a dreamy look at Mexico’s Lacandon
Indians; and Tomasz Tomaszewski’s Cyganie
(Gypsy), a candid portrait of Europe’s Romany
peoples.
As every year, APFW offers daily portfolio
reviews by renowned professional photogra-
phers to anyone who wants to have their work
critiqued. Afternoon Sessions include a book-
making workshop, an artists sharing forum with
Cambodia’s own Ruom collective, and a talk
on man, nature and technology in the arts.
