Message from the Headteacher
Dear Parents
It has been a pleasure to welcome the pupils back to school this week and in particular, the Year 7 pupils who appear to have settled
very quickly into a routine. The photograph below shows two of the school’s Year 7 pupils arriving for their first day in the Senior School
and the same two seven years earlier when they joined the Prep.
Growth Mindsets
The teaching staff took part in a whole school Inset day on 2 September when Professor
Barry Hymer spoke about Growth Mindsets and praising the effort rather than the out-
come when speaking with children. This develops a love of learning in the pupils and a
mastery of a subject, rather than a performance approach to learning. Over the coming
months we will be developing this further in faculties and subjects; it may be worth
noting some of the rules of praise.
Ensuring colleagues in the school continue to be up to date with new approaches to
learning and teaching is at the core of what we do and fundamental to the success of the
pupils. The next planned Inset day is 6 November when the school will be closed for pupils.
External Examination Results
I am pleased to inform you that we achieved some very impressive results this summer and indeed, the AS results were the best value
added to date. We are awaiting some remarks from a number of Exam Boards and I hope to be able to report the results in full in the
newsletter at the end of the month.
Prize Giving
Prize Giving will take place at 19:30 on Wednesday 16 September at City Hall, Hull, when our guest of honour will be Sally Kettle, the
first woman to row the Atlantic Ocean twice from east to west. All pupils from Year 7 upwards are expected to attend (parents new to
the school have received a letter outlining details of the event). All parents are warmly invited to attend. Pupils are still able to pick up
tickets from Mrs Logan’s office; please note that admission is by ticket only.

New facilities
The new Independent Learning Centre opened last week and the feedback from pupils
has been highly positive. We look forward to welcoming the author Phil Earle on 30
September, who will be speaking with pupils in KS3 and completing creative writing
with pupils in KS4. The new Sixth Form facilities are now fully open, as is the study cen-
tre.
We are looking forward to the complete refurbishment of the old library in the coming
weeks; this will be used as a multi-purpose room for this academic year.
New Collegiate Staff
On 3 September, we welcomed a number of new teaching and support staff to the school:
Hull Collegiate Trust - Vacancy
The Hull Collegiate Trust is an independent education charity founded in 2000. The Trust provides financial assistance to new and
existing pupils of Hull Collegiate School by subsidising the cost of co-curricular and extra-curricular activities. The Trust is com-
mitted to broadening access to Hull Collegiate School and holds the school motto ‘the best in everyone’ at its core. The mission is
to provide financial assistance to new and existing pupils in the Senior School and Sixth Form at Hull Collegiate School whose family
circumstances mean that they cannot afford the cost of, for example, educational visits, bus travel, music tuition and school uni-
form. The vision for the future is to be able to extend the support of the Trust to pupils in the Junior School. The Hull Collegiate
Trust is a charity that provides funding for pupils in the school the opportunity to access all that the school has to offer.
We are looking to appoint a Trust and Charities Co-ordinator to lead on all aspects of the Trust and Charity activities that take place
across the school. The post is a part-time position and we are looking for applicants who have a real and genuine interest in the
school. For further information please contact Sue Logan [email protected] in the first instance.
The Team returned from Uganda in late July after a very successful and educational visit. Chloe Rackham (Year 13) has edited this
documentary styled video to showcase Team Uganda’s trip to the Kanungu District of Uganda this summer. The video will be en-
tered as part of Chloe’s Extended Project Qualification and she will be commended for her great work. Follow the link or the QR
code to watch.

Senior Prefects
The 2015-2016 Senior Prefect Team is introduced below:
Jack Colthup, Head Prefect
I am studying History, Government & Politics and Economics in my
last year at the school. Next year I hope to go to my first choice
university to study History. I have a passion for working with disa-
bled children and hope to be able to continue this work for as long
as possible. Alongside my volunteering, I play lots of tennis and
hope to continue this into the future.
Phoebe Exon, Head Prefect
I am just entering my 15th year at Hull Collegiate having started in
Kindergarten at the former Hull High School, prior to the merger
with Hull Grammar School. I am currently studying History, English Literature and Photography at A Level with the hope of
studying History of Art or Fashion Journalism in London. My main hobbies are singing and hockey. I enjoy participating in all
school choirs and sports teams and I am delighted to be the 1st Team hockey captain this year.
Jessica Robinson, Deputy Head Prefect
I am studying Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Economics at A Level and hope to read Economics at university. I have three
international England caps for football at under 15s and under 17s age groups, as well as achieving a silver medal for the 800m
at National athletics. I am really looking forward to immersing myself with all the opportunities available this academic year as
a result of gaining this role.
Olivia Collier, Deputy Head Prefect
I am studying Drama, History and English Literature A Levels in my final year at Hull Collegiate School. As well as being a mem-
ber of the National Youth Theatre and in the annual school production every year (last year as the lead role of Maria in The
Sound of Music), I am a keen member of the Senior and Girls' choirs. My heavy involvement in drama makes me very excited to
present the Drama Report this year at Prize Giving. I look forward to the further challenges that this role will bring throughout
2015-2016.
Chloe Rackham, Senior Prefect
I am entering my seventh year at the school. At the moment I am studying Drama, Photography and English Language with the
hope of studying either photography or film at university. In my spare time I like to act, having just returned from the National
Youth Theatre summer intake course this year.
Guy Grimwood, Senior Prefect
I started Hull Collegiate in Year 2 so am now entering into my 11th year at the school. I am studying Politics, Economics and
Business Studies; my ambition is to study Politics at university next year. I enjoy playing rugby and captain the 1st Team, which
is a huge privilege for me. I was also proud to be a member of the school ICAEW BASE team who reached the national finals
last year.
Great North Run
Three members of staff are running in the Great North Run this weekend for three different
charities. If you feel able to, your support would be greatly appreciated.

Tennis Success
Well done to Harvey Booth, Year 8, who picked up the U18 title at Nottingham tennis club this summer
and then went on to play for Lincolnshire, beating Northamptonshire in a county match.
Leaver Destinations 2015
Once again the school can report a successful outcome for all our recent leavers with 96% choosing to continue their education
and the remainder opting for employment or a working GAP year. Pupils will be studying a wide range of courses at universities
across England and Scotland with Durham, Leicester, Leeds, Hull and St Andrews being popular locations this year. Of those ap-
plying for university places, 77% were offered places at their firm choice universities with a further 15% gaining insurance choice
offers. Congratulations to all our leavers and a special mention for Jack Kelsall who will study Natural Sciences at Cambridge and
Will Kebbell who has declined a firm offer from Leeds University to begin employment as Head of Network Operations Centre at
Connexin, having impressed his employer in a part-time capacity during his final year of A Level study. RG
University Applications Entry 2016
Pupils in Year 13 and their parents are warmly invited to the Higher Education Information Evening to be held on Monday 14
September at 18:30. A representative from the University of Hull will explain the application process from a university's per-
spective and offer unbiased guidance on how to submit an application that will impress an admissions tutor. There will also be a
detailed explanation of the current student loan repayment structure. DH

Introduction of Office365 to Senior School Pupils at HCS Over the summer period the school has moved to Microsoft Office 365 for email and cloud storage and this now allows us to offer each pupil in Senior School the opportunity to install the Microsoft Office suite of software at no cost on the computer devices used at home for their academic work. The entitlement to the use of Office365 and the applications that are associated with it, including email, remains with your child whilst they are at the school. This enables pupils to install the software on desktops, lap-tops, macs, tablets and mobile devices and to use a cloud storage facility called OneDrive to enable digital work to be easily trans-ported between home and school. Please ask your child to access their school email so that you can read the Office365 guidance and school policy concerning its use that has been sent to them. Pupils are being informed of Office365 over the coming weeks and how to access the web page should they wish to install it at home but clearly they need your approval and guidance before commencing. There is no obligation to install any of this software and for many of you who already have the Microsoft Suite of applications on your children’s computers, there is clearly no need to install this at all. OneDrive and access to email is not dependent upon installing this software as these applications are already available to your child. If you would like to take advantage of this offer then before proceeding please ensure that any trial versions of Office that you may have on the device are uninstalled. You can do this from Programs in the Control Panel, usually pressing the Start key and typing uninstall a program will take you to the right place. Before commencing such an installation back up your machine and the files on it. On your child’s device then please go to the following website - https://login.microsoftonline.com. Your child will then be asked for their user ID and password which is their school email address and network password which they are already familiar with. Once entered the following screen should be displayed. This screen gives you the ability to download the full versions of the Microsoft Office suite of software and to use the other appli-cations included in Office365 as indicated by the icons on this screen such as online (cut down) versions of the software available for download. To commence an installation press the install button on this screen and then wait until the process has completed. It is advisable to have your device connected to a power source during this time as download may take some time. If you wish to install it on a further device then you will note that this screen changes slightly with the option to install it either on a PC /Mac or a tablet / smartphone now at the bottom of the screen. You will also note that the other applications that your child can access via this site (note that there are other ways to access Office365 such as https://outlook.office365.com ) includes their email account and their OneDrive account. It is important to un-derstand that every device that you install Office365 on will automatically access your child’s school email and OneDrive account. In the newsletter next week I will explain a little more about OneDrive and how it is used so that you can support your child’s use of this facility at home. RT
Duke of Edinburgh Awards
Anyone who started an award last year
should be aiming to upload all of their
evidence for the skill, physical and volun-
tary sections as soon as possible because
the Expedition section has now been com-
pleted by the assessor. The awards will be
held on Thursday 28 April 2016 at the
school from 18:00 onwards so please
keep that evening free in order to attend.
I am now recruiting for this year; the
Bronze award is open to Year 10 onwards,
Silver to Year 11 onwards and Gold for
Sixth Form. If you require a sign up letter,
please see Miss Groves as soon as possi-
ble. The Friday activity is full, but we still
have room on Wednesdays at 13:30 in
F15. If you would like any more infor-
mation about the award, please do not
hesitate to contact Miss Groves at the
school or see http://www.dofe.org/ for
more information. SGr
Sponsored Walk
The school’s annual sponsored walk will
be held on the morning of Sunday 4 Octo-
ber around the school grounds and sur-
rounds. All pupils and parents/guardians
are invited to walk the 6+ kilometres – a
pleasant Sunday morning stroll. The walk
is in aid of The Hull Collegiate Trust. Con-
nexin is match funding and supporting the
event.
There is even a prize for the best fancy
dress on the day.
Sponsor forms have been sent home to all
parents/guardians; more copies are avail-
able from the main school office.
Please complete and return sponsor
forms to the main school office no later
than Friday 16 October.
The Hull Collegiate Trust is a registered
charity (charity no. 1079653). The charity
provides financial assistance to new and
existing pupils of Hull Collegiate School by
subsidising the cost of co-curricular and
extra-curricular activities e.g. bus travel,
school uniform and music tuition. The
charity supports pupils who, without the
Trust’s help, would not be able to access
all areas of the curriculum. We hope you
can help the Trust to continue its vital
work at Hull Collegiate School by taking
part in the walk.
If you have any questions please do not
hesitate to contact the school.

A Level Science trip
On Tuesday a group of A Level science
pupils travelled to London for a day of
scientific discovery.
Our first visit was to the Hunterian Muse-
um. The Hunterian Collection today con-
tains approximately 3,500 specimens and
preparations from John Hunter's original
collection. John Hunter FRS (1728-1793)
was a surgeon and anatomist.
Here we enjoyed a short talk from Profes-
sor Spitz (formally of Great Ormond
Street Hospital) about the exhibits and
then spent an hour looking at this fantas-
tic and curious collection.
After a leisurely lunch in Lincoln’s Inn field
we made our way to The Royal Society for
their summer exhibition. Here we were
able to talk to scientists about their re-
cent research. Highlights included finding
out about the University Of Leicester’s
discovery of Richard the Third and self-
repairing polymers.
After a refreshing ice cream, tea and en-
tertainment in Covent Garden, we re-
turned home tired but enthused and in-
spired by all we had experienced.

A Big Thank You to Acklams
Coaches
Mr Alan Acklam of Acklams Coaches has
generously donated £500.00 to The Hull
Collegiate Trust.
Mr Acklam said “It is a great pleasure to
be able to give something back and sup-
port the work of The Hull Collegiate Trust.
Without the Trust, some pupils at Colle-
giate would not be able to access all are-
as of the curriculum and this is why we
want to support the charity, helping the
Trust to broaden access to the school”.
We would like to take this opportunity to
thank everyone at Acklams Coaches for
their continued support.
