KevinLongentershiseighthseasonasheadcoachoftheThunderingHerd,andthe17thseasonofhiscareer.InsevenseasonsatMarshall,Longhasledthewomentoa52-63-19record.Inthelasttwoseasons,hetooktheHerdtoback-to-backappearancesintheC-USATournamentforthefirsttimeinprogramhistory.In2013,withLongatthehelm,Marshallearneditsfirst-everpostseasonwin.

WiththeadditionofLong’sfirstrecruitingclassin2009,theHerdposteda12-7record,itshighestwintotalinprogramhistory,aswellasgoing5-6inConference-USA,itsbestproductionsincejoiningtheconferencein2002andfallingonegameshortofitsfirst-everC-USAtournamentappearance.

LongacceptedtheheadpositionatMarshallfollowingoneyearastheinterimheadcoachduringthe2008season.PriortoMU,LongworkedatRiderUniversity,whereheservedasheadcoachfrom2003-2008.LongleftRiderastheBroncs’winningestcoachwitha37-48-12recordinfiveyears.TheSpringfield,Va.,nativewashiredasRider’sthirdcoachinthewomen’ssoccerprogramhistoryinMarch2003.

LongledtheBroncstorecord-settingvictoriesinhisfirsttwoseasons,2003(11)and2004(12).Aftera12-winseasonin2004,theBroncsqualifiedfortheMetroAtlanticAthleticConference(MAAC)playoffs.Inthatsameseason,heledRidertotheMAACChampionshipGame,andin2005,earnedafirst-roundvictoryintheMAACChampionshiptournament.

The2003seasonwasthefirstwinningseasonforRider,aseasoninwhichtheBroncswontwotournaments.Riderwasranked27thinthenationamongscoringoffenses,withawin-lossrecordrankingamongthetop-thirdinthenation.

Long’s2003BroncsledtheMAACinshots,points,goals,goalspergameandassists.Threeofhisplayerswerehonoredforhighacademics.In2004,sixofhisplayersearnedAll-MAAChonors,andthreeotherswereontheMAACAll-Academicteam.

Offthefield,LongimprovedtheRiderteam’sgradepointaveragenearlyhalfagradehigherthaninhisentryyeartoa3.2.

PriortoRider,heservedastheassistantwomen’ssoccercoachatNorthCarolinaStateUniversityfrom2001-2003.WhilewithNCState,Longtaughtphysicaleducationandheparticipatedinthe2002NCAACollegeCupYESClinic.

From1997-2001,Longcoachedwomen’ssocceratRandolph-MaconWoman’sCollegewhilealsoservingasthedirectorofsportsinformation.Whilecoachingattheschool,Longhadtheonlytwowinningseasonsinprogramhistory.AlsoatRandolph-Macon,LongwaspartoftheNCAAWomen’sSoccerCommitteewherehewasthechairoftheSouthRegion.

From1998-2001,Longservedasevaluatorandeducationreferenceforover30coachesasdirectoroftravelcoachesfortheLynchburgUnitedSoccerClub.LongwillcontinueasanOlympicDevelopmentProgram(ODP)RegionISenior

Staffmemberwherehecoachesandtrainsteamstocompeteatthenationallevel.Additionaldutiesasseniorstaffmemberincludeselectingtheregionalteam,training,coachingincompetitionsandpromotingplayerstothenationallevelintheUnder-14agegroup.

From1993until1998,heservedasdistrictandstateheadcoachinVirginia,selectingteams,schedulinggamesandpractices,attendingandassistingwiththeRegionalSelectionCamp.

InMarch2008,hetookanODP17-18year-oldelitewomen’ssquadtoRussiatocompeteagainstteamsfromPoland,RussiaandUkraine.Long

guidedhisteamtodefeatRussiatwiceandwonitsbrackettoadvancetothesemifinalround.Hissquadtookthe

BronzeChampionshipandwasthesecondyoungestsquadinthechampionship’shistorytowinitsbracket.

In2007,LongwastheheadcoachofanODPU15regionalteamwhofacedU-20teamsofCostaRica,Panama,ChileandMexico.HissquadfellshorttoMexico,2-1,inthechampionshipmatch.

LongbeganhiscareerintheArlingtonCountyPublicSchools,Virginia,asahealthandphysicaleducationteacherandsoccercoach.Aftercollege,LongtaughtthreeyearsatKenmoreMiddleSchoolbeforemovingtoYorktownHighSchool(1992-1999).

LonghasbeenpartoftheNationalSoccerCoachesAssociationofAmerica(NSCAA)since1998,UnitedStatesSoccerFederation(USSF)since1994,andtheAmericanAssociationofUniversityProfessors(AAUP)since2003.

Also,hehasreceivedtheNationalSoccerCoachesAssociationofAmerica“AdvancedNational”diplomain1999andin1996,certifiedwiththeUnitedStatesSoccerFederation“B”License.

Longhasbeeninvolvedwithdifferentcampsandclinics.HeisDirectoroftheKevinLongSoccerAcademy(2004),andnumerousothersupanddowntheeastcoastthroughouttheyears.

LongearnedaBachelorofScienceinHealthEducationfromGeorgeMasonUniversity(1993)andaMasterofArtsinHumanServicesAdministrationin2007fromRider.

AfterservingasavolunteerassistantfortheThunderingHerdinfall2013,ErikaDuncanwasnamedassistantcoachforMarshallwomen’ssoccerinMarch2014.

“WearethrilledtohaveErikajoiningusonafull-timebasis,”coachKevinLongsaidofherhiring.“Overthelastyear,wesawfirst-handwhatherimpactherewouldlooklikeandnow,beingabletodevotemoretimeandenergytotheMarshallprogrammeanswecanexpectevenmorefromher.”

DuncanreturnedtotheMarshallwomen’ssoccerprogramforthefall2013seasonasoneofthemostdecoratedplayersinHerdhistory.Afour-yearletterwinneratforwardfrom2007-2010,sheholdstheMarshallrecordformostcareergoals(23)andmostcareergamewinninggoals(eight).In2009,shetiedformostconsecutivematcheswithagoal(four).Sheboaststhesecond-mostcareershotswith140;third-mostcareerpointswith54andtwicetiedforthird-mostgoalsinaseasonwithnine(2008,2009).

“Iamveryexcitedtobeginmycollegiatecoachingcareeratmyalmamater,”Duncansaid.“MarshallhasbecomemyhomeawayfromhomeandIcan’texpressenoughhowgratefulIamtohavebeengiventhisopportunity.Ialsocan’tthankKevinenoughforallowingmetocontinuebeingapartofsuchagreatteamandprogramthatwillcontinuetogrowinitssuccess.”

LongspokeofDuncan’simmeasurablecontributiontotheHerdduringhertimeasvolunteerassistant.

“ErikableedsGreenandWhite–wecan’tdevelopapassionfortheHerdthatErikaintrinsicallycarrieswithher,”Longsaid.“ShewillusethatprideinmakingsureMarshallwomen’ssoccerisalwaysstrivingtobetheverybestwecanbe.”

OtheraccoladesDuncancollectedduringhercareerincludesecondteamAll-C-USAin(2009,2010),C-USAPlayeroftheWeek(2008,2010),secondteamNSCAAAll-Region(2010),honorablementionNSCAAScholarAll-Region(2009),secondteamAcademicAll-C-USA(2009)andC-USACommissioner’sHonorRoll(2007-10).

PriortoMarshall,DuncanplayedfortheScottishwomen’snationalteamattheU17andU19levelsandwasasquadplayerforthefullnationalteam.Aftershegraduatedwithabachelor’sinexercisesciencein2011,DuncandecidedtocontinuehercareeratMarshallbypursuingamaster’sdegreeinsportadministration,graduatinginMay2013.DuringgraduateschoolsheworkedasapersonaltrainerattheMarshallCampusRecreationCenter.

DuncanhasbeenworkingwiththeWestVirginiaSoccerClubgirl’sacademysince2011.SheistheU10headcoachandassiststheU14girlsteam.SheholdsaU.S.SoccerDCoachingLicense.

“OneofthefirstthingsthatstandsoutaboutErikaisherloveforthegameandherpursuitofhersoccereducation,”Longsaid.“Iamconfidentthatweareonthefrontendofaverysuccessfulcoach’scareer.”

LaurenMiddletonentersherfirstseasonasassistantcoachoftheMarshallwomen’ssoccerprogram.

“WehadanawesomelistofcandidatesforthepositionandIamverypleasedwithwhatLaurenbringstoourprogram,”coachKevinLongsaid.“Shebringsaknowledgeandunderstandingofthegoalkeepingpositionthatweweresearchingfor,butmorethanthat,shehasdemonstratedtheworkethicandinitiativeassociatedwithsuccessateverystopalongherpath.Sheisawelcomeadditiontoourprogram.”

ABirmingham,Ala.,native,Middletonspentthe2014seasonasanassistantcoachatTiffin(Ohio).DuringhertimewiththeDragons,sheassistedinallphasesoftheprogramwhileworkingspecificallywiththegoalkeepers.ShecoachedfreshmankeeperSamOrtenzienroutetoarecord-settingseasonof145saves,shatteringaprogramrecordheldsince1991.Ortenziearneda2014All-GreatLakesIntercollegiateAthleticConferencehonorablementionunderMiddleton’stutelage.FreshmandefenderMelissaBoscoalsowasnamedtothe2014NCAAD-II/NAIIandNCCAAWomen’sAll-OhioTeamsunderMiddleton.

ThesitewasthehomeoftheVeteransMemorialFieldHouseformorethansixdecades.TheHerd’sagedformerbasketballhomehadfallenintodisrepair-butthememorialpaneltoveteransthatgracedthesideoftheoldarenawaspreservedandhangsatthemainentranceofthesoccerstadiumoffFifthAvenue.

Marshallalsoprovided$100,000totheGreaterHuntingtonParkandRecreationDistrictforahalf-acrechildren’splaygrounddedicatedtoveterans.Thepublicparkstandsadjacenttothecomplex,offFourthAvenue.

Themainentrancetothe1,006-seatstadiumincludesabrickplaza,whereHerdsocceralumnimaypurchasebricks,withtheirnamesinscribed,foraminimumcontributionof$1,000.Fanswillhavecloseaccess,underthestands,torestroomandconcessionsfacilities,too.

TheHerdsoccerplayerswillfindthatspecialcarehasbeentakentomaketheVeteransComplexahomeawayfromhomeforthem.

Fromaglass-doorentrancefromthefieldintoanequipmentroom,themen’sandwomen’steamshavetheirownlockerrooms,trainingroomsandlounges.Therealsoarevisitingteamandofficials’lockerrooms.

TheHerdheadcoachesandassistantcoachesalsohaveaseparateentrancefortheirownoffices,withadditionalspaceforgraduateassistantstowork.Aconferenceroomisadjacenttothoseoffices.

AtopthestadiumsitsalargepressboxareathatwillaccommodateTV,radioandprintoutlets.

Throughoutthesoccerbuilding,wallsarehighlightedbysectionsofKellygreen,androwsoftexturedblockbringadefinitiontothewalls.

Themainentranceplaza,atthecornerofFifthand26th,isdoneissectionslikethatofasoccerball.AsignsimilartotheoneatthecornerofFifthand20th-nexttotheMarshallRecreationCenter-willgracetheplazaalongwithplantings.
