March 2015

Dear Parents,

After our first Afternoon of Stories, I pondered how often we take time to tell stories with our families. Nowadays with the distraction of digital devices, we rarely take the time to sit and tell stories! Research shows that children tend to have higher self esteem, lower levels of anxiety and fewer behavioral prob-lems when parents share family stories.

Storytelling can be as simple as reading a story from a book, sharing a story from memory, or talking about your own childhood. Children love listening to stories. By telling chil-dren stories, you can talk about virtues such as courage, hon-esty, gratitude, compassion, determination and faith. Children can enhance their verbal proficiency by learning new words and phrases. This will help them with learning to read.

Let’s all turn off the screens and tell stories!

Parents,

We are approaching one of the most exciting times of year at Peachtree Presbyterian Preschool - the Spring! This time of year brings lots of fun activities at the Preschool, and we hope all of you will enjoy them as much as we do! Please be sure to check out your Room Parents weekly emails and the Preschool website - www.peachtreepresbyterianpreschool.org - to make sure you don’t miss a thing!

Two of the BEST activities the Preschool hosts are coming soon: Springtime in the City on Friday, March 27th (our amazing auction and night of fun for the parents) and Spring Fling on Saturday, May 2nd (our fabulous day of fun made especially for our kids)! If you haven’t done so already, line up your babysitter and purchase your tickets for Springtime in the City - I promise that you will not be disappointed by the unreal auction items, the music, food, drinks and just a totally fun night out! Invite your neighbors and grandparents too - this party is for all adults! Soon, you will be able to purchase tickets for Spring Fling as well as sign-up to volunteer for a shift (which we ask all parents to do!)

As crazy as it sounds, we are already planning for the upcoming year at the Preschool. Are you interested in getting involved in our Parents’ Council? We would LOVE to have you! Please contact me and let me know - we are looking for committee chairs and welcome everyone who is interested! Also, if you have any suggestions for next year, we’d love to hear those ideas, too! Contact me at [email protected] or 404-771-3483.

Thank you for all you do! Natalie Albert

teacher appreciationFebruary’s teacher appreciation lunch, the Teacher Appreciation Committee said “Thanks for all you do” with box lunches from Jason’s Deli. Special thanks to Jason’s Deli and to Kate Castellaw for coordination and setup. Jason’s was featured in Parent’s Magazine as one of the top quick service restaurants to dine with children. The kid’s menu is free of MSG, artificial trans-fat, artificial dyes and is also free of high fructose corn syrup. It’s great to know that Ja-son’s is not only delicious, but it’s also one of the freshest options for dining with your family.

Tip of the Month

Do you know there are many ingredients in our food and personal care products that are banned in other countries?

Here are a few-Artifi cial Colors: In Europe these are banned and others are required to belabeled “May Have an Adverse Eff ect on Activity and Att ention in Children”. These hide in places you would not suspect: mac and cheese, au gratin potatoes, packaged items.

Genetically Modifi ed Foods: Ingredients that are genetically altered are found in 70% of everything in the grocery store and most processed foods. These are banned or signifi cantly regulated in more than 60 countries, yet they are not labeled in the US.

Brominated Vegetable Oil (BVO): This is made with bromine, a chemical used as a fl ame retardant, and is found in sports drinks and some sodas. This is banned in over 100 countries.

Meat and Dairy Treated with Synthetic Hormones: Banned in European Union, Japan, Australia, and China.

Parabens: Found in most personal care items. These are linked to endocrine disruption and breast cancer. Most are banned in Europe.

Start reading your labels to fi nd out what is in your food and personal care! To learn more or to buy non-toxic cleaners at a deep discount visit www.healthygreenschools.com

CARS NEEDED FOR SPRING FLINGThe Spring Fling committ ee is in need of children’s motorized vehicles for the Race Track at Spring Fling. This event was a huge hit last year, and we’re hoping to have enough ATVs again this year.

If you are willing to let us “borrow” your child’s car (Barbie jeeps, Escalades, etc), we would great-ly appreciate it. Fully charged cars can be dropped off during morning carpool on the Thursday or Friday before Spring Fling, which is May 2. If you can’t bring your car to school, we are willing to

come get it! Please contact Julie Greene ([email protected]) if you can help.
