Welcome to Longville!Longville is surrounded by natural beauty, but there’s much more here than meets the eye. You can enjoy art classes, classic car shows, an ice bocce tournament, music in the park, a daylong Independence Day celebration — and, of course, our acclaimed turtle races. There truly is something for everyone in Longville!

A PLACE TO PLAY Our pristine lakes are our calling card. The Woman Lake chain is the acknowledged jewel of the area, with Girl Lake bringing boaters right into downtown. But the Longville area encompasses everything from small, quiet lakes to Leech Lake, the third-largest lake in Minnesota.

In the summer these blue waters beckon fishermen and water skiers, canoes and sail boats, kayakers and swimmers. The tall pines and sandy beaches offer the perfect place to enjoy a book, a game of sand volleyball, or an evening campfire with songs and s’mores. And the fun doesn’t stop when the lakes freeze over because that ushers in the ice fishing season!

But water isn’t all we have — our forests are nearly as famous as our lakes. We are proud to claim a portion of the beautiful Chippewa National Forest, with numerous trails for bird watching, hiking, and cross-country skiing, plus designated routes for bicycles, snowmobiles, and ATVs/OHVs. North Cass County also offers bountiful hunting and trapping seasons throughout the year.

The Longville Chamber of Commerce invites you to enjoy our extensive schedule of activities for all ages, all year, January through December. These include our world-renowned summer turtle races, our famous Fourth of July celebration, a pancake breakfast at the Longville airport, and a very hometown Christmas tree lighting celebration.

A PLACE TO LIVE For a small town, Longville is a vibrant community that offers a surprisingly complete lifestyle. For example, the Margaret Welch Memorial Library is a member of the Kitchigami Regional Library system, which serves five counties and links us to programs and resources far beyond our municipal borders.

While Longville is the smallest town in Minnesota to have a public library, we’re also one of the smallest to have a municipal airport (KXVG). Our airport offers the longest runway in a 50-mile radius and is capable of handling small business jets. There is also 24-hour self-serve fuel and a courtesy car.

The Longville area is served by two school districts – Northland School District in Remer and Walker-Hackensack-Akeley School District in Walker. Both offer Kindergarten through 12th Grade programs, plus sports and other extra-curricular activities.

The Scott and Jane Stuart Memorial Park provides a skating rink, tennis courts, pickle ball, shuffleboard, and a community pavilion. We also have a challenging golf course, very active community clubs and organizations, plenty of opportunities to volunteer, and — necessary for health and safety — 24-hour ambulance service, fire protection, emergency first-responders, our own clinic and pharmacy.

Longville Municipal Airport, located less than 1/2 mile north of town on Highway 84, is within walking distance of downtown Longville’s friendly stores, restaurants and motel. Because the airport is centrally located among the approximately 400 area lakes, when you fly into Longville it is a quick get-away to your favorite resort or vacation spot.

Serving Longville and the surrounding communities for over 50 years the airport provides a convenient and safe location for North Memorial Air Care helicopter to intercept critical medical and trauma patients for the fastest possible transportation to medical care centers. The airport is also a base of operations for several local pilots who donate their time and aircraft for charitable flights through non-profit organizations such as Angel Flights and Veterans Airlift Command, providing transportation to people and families in need of specific medical care at distant locations.

The Longville Flyers, an active flying group, meet informally on Saturday mornings at Patrick’s restaurant and welcome all pilots and aviation enthusiasts to join them at 9:00 AM for breakfast or coffee.

Longville is surrounded by the Chippewa National Forest which is rich in woods and water habitat where many of Minnesota’s 313 regular bird species nest during the late spring and early summer. From anywhere around Longville one can look up and often see a soaring Bald Eagle, one of hundreds that nest in the forest area. Longville’s forests are home to Black-capped Chickadees, White-breasted Nuthatches, woodpeckers including the magnificent Pileated, Baltimore Oriole, Rosebreasted Grosbeak, Ruby-throated Hummingbird, Eastern Phoebi, Song Sparrow, Gray Catbird, Red-eyed Vireo, Yellow Warbler, American Goldfinch, Purple Finch, American Crow, Blue Jays, and American Robin. Near the shore or on the lake will be Tree Swallows, Belted Kingfishers, Eastern Kingbirds, Red-winged Blackbirds, Green Blue Herons, Common Loons, Ring-billed Gulls, Wood Ducks and Mallards. The Longville area is included in the Audubon-Great River Birding Trail, one of the major birding trails in Minnesota. The trail of sites along the Great River Road begins at the Mississippi River headwaters at Lake Itasca, about one hour northwest of Longville.

Wood-warblers such as Yellow, Chestnut-sided, Pine, Mourning, Nashville, Common Yellowthroat and American Redstart can also be found here.

DEEP PORTAGE LEARNING CENTERThis preserve with its extensive walking trails is another place to find forest birds.

LEECH LAKEOn Leech Lake one can see birds that like a big lake. These include the American Pelican, Double-crested Cormorant, Herring Gull, Caspian Tern and Common Tern.

FEDERAL DAMThe harbor at Federal Dam, located 20 miles north of Longville, attracts migrating waterfowl in the early spring and Federal Dam in the fall, including Common, Red-breasted and Hooded Mergansers, Common Goldeneye, Ring-necked Duck, Bufflehead, Canvasback, American Widgeon, Red-head, Greater and Lesser Scaup, Canada Geese, Trumpeter Swan and Tundra Swan. Paved and unpaved, scenic miles await you.

Enjoy our scenery at your pace, on your schedule.

Hundreds of miles of paved trails beckon bikers, hikers and in-line skaters. The Paul Bunyan Trail, the longest bike trail in Minnesota, offers 112 miles from Brainerd to Bemidji. It also connects the Heartlent, Blue Ox and Cuyuna State Trails, offering all kinds of exciting outdoor adventures.

Longville offers a direct connection to the Paul Bunyan State Trail on designated bike routes along County Roads 5 and 11.

For mountain bikers and hikers, the Woodtick Trail, just west of Longville, travels through the scenic Chippewa National Forest past Moccasin Lake and other smaller lakes until it, too, connects with the Paul Bunyan State Trail.

Opportunities for hikers also abound. The North Country Trail, America’s longest national Scenic Trail at 4,600 miles, tracks right through the Longville area, offering hikers a unique opportunity to explore the beautiful Chippewa National Forest.

There are also hiking trails—and learning opportunities—at Deep Portage Learning Center.

And you can experience it all—at your own pace, on your own schedule.

RACING INFORMATION All games, contests and races are held right in the center of downtown Longville on Main Street (County Road 5).

When you register for the races you will receive a turtle race button with a numbered sticker that matches your numbered paper badge. Racers are called by those numbers and compete in heats of 10 to 15, so listen for your number when the races are underway. In each heat, the fastest and “slowpoke” winners will receive ribbons and qualify for the final championship races.

You may bring your own turtle to race but there are a couple of rules—its shell must mea-sure at least 4 inches in diameter and it cannot be a snapping turtle or exotic species. If you don’t have a turtle of your own, you can race one of ours. Turtle vendors supply us for the whole summer and are on hand to help you.

When your race is called, enter the race circle and get a turtle from the turtle vendors (unless you’ve brought your own). Put your numbered sticker on your turtle’s shell, go to the starting circle, put your turtle on the ground behind the line and wait for the announc-er to give the “start” signal. After the race has started, carefully exit the circle, being sure not to step on any turtles.

If you earn either fastest or slowpoke honors, the judges will give you a ribbon. You can compete against all other heat winners for grand champion honors in the final races of the day.

A SPECIAL RESORT TURTLE RACEThe first race of the day is for representatives of Chamber-member resorts (listed in this brochure and on www.Longville.com). Ask your resort if you can represent them. They will give you a special Resort Race Ticket, which you will need to present when you register on Turtle Race Day.

NOTE: There is a registration fee to race in the Resort Race. There is also a special table for Resort Race registration. Resort racers do not have to wait in the regular registration line.

HAND WASHING FACILITIESIn the interest of good health, we provide a hand-washing station and encourage everyone to clean their hands after handling the turtles.

BOY LAKEHere’s what Minneapolis Star Tribune writer, Ron Schara, says of Boy Lake in his listing of little known walleye hot spots: “Oh boy, here’s one that oughta be good. Located north of Longville, Big Boy is 3,145 acres of good fish-ing, with a walleye count that is twice the state average.”

LAKE INGUADONALake Inguadona is located 3.5 miles east of Longville on Cass County Road 7. The lake is over 4 miles long and is 1/2 mile wide on the south end. Little Boy River flows through the lake. There is also access to Rice Lake on the south through the Little Boy River.

BLACKWATER LAKELocated 8 miles south of Longville on State Hwy 84 and Cass County Road 11, Blackwater Lake is a 722 acre lake with a maximum depth of 67 feet. An excellent multi-species lake containing northern pike, LM/SM bass, walleyes, black crappie, bluegill, yellow perch and Tullibee (cisco).

Northern pike are abundant in Blackwater Lake and the catch rate has been historically high compared to others.

THUNDER LAKEThis crystal-clear, deep, spring-fed lake of 1,350 acres is nearly 5 miles long and 1.5 miles wide. Walleye, northern pike, all pan-fish, largemouth and smallmouth bass are caught in this diverse fishery with infinite structure. Thunder Lake is located 11 miles east of Longville near the intersection of County Hwy 7 and MN Hwy 6.

WABEDO LAKEWabedo Lake is located 4.5 miles south of Longville off of Hwy 54. Record Muskie, but also great Walleye, Northern, Bass and exciting panfishing for Crappie and Bluegill are present.

LONG LAKELocated just two miles north of Longville on MN Highway 84 is Long Lake. The lake is nearly 8 miles long and generally 1/4 to 1/2 mile wide. Steep banks surround the lake except at the location of the two resorts on the south west corner of the lake. Fishing is great with a variety of spe-cies from which to choose. BIG SAND LAKEBig Sand Lake is located 18 miles north and east of Longville along Highway 200, or 1.5 miles west of Remer. The lake is known for its wealth of bluegills and northern pike, crap-pies, walleyes, large mouth bass and rock bass.

THE LAKESFirst there is the beauty of the area. There are nine gorgeous lakes within a short distance of town. The lakes are full of sunnies, crappies, bass, walleyes, north-erns and muskies. We're saying they're there, but you have to get them into your boat. How much fun is that?

GOLFINGGolfing is high on the list of activities. Isn't that a senior or retiree challenge? Ridgewood Golf Course is about 3 1/2 miles from town. It provides a driving range, practice green, carts, 27 holes, and a fine dining room. The greens are in fantastic shape.

CLUBS & ORGANIZATIONSThe Young-at-Heart Senior Club has a lovely year-round club house which is suitably decorated for each season. Many activities are conducted there: meetings, potlucks, parties, Wi-Fi and trips to plays and museums. There is an organ and a computer and printer which all can use. Meetings are held twice a month. Cribbage is played every Wednesday and 500 on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of the month. The public is welcome. Membership is $6 per year and includes everything. Members get involved com-munity-wide by volunteering to help with Chamber activities. Seniors man (or woman) the information booth from Memorial Day to Labor Day. It's a fun job. We also have a tennis league. New courts were built just this year and mem-bers are really enjoying them.

Other organizations to join are: Women of Today, Lions Club, VFW and Auxiliary, First Friday Book Club and several lake associations.

CHURCHESMost churches have organizations of their own. Speaking of churches, Longville has a total of four churches: Community, Bible Chapel, Salem Lutheran and St. Edward's Catholic.

LOCAL CLINICThere is a clinic with a doctor and a physician's assistant. Also, we have a wonderful library with many services including computers.

HUNTINGWe're good all year-round in Longville. There's always something going on. Longville is a terrific place to hunt: ducks, geese, turkeys and deer. Our hunters' organizations have terrific dinners with super attendance.

SNOWMOBILINGSnowmobilers come from all over to join us on our well maintained trails. It's not unusual to see groups of 30 or more enjoying the snow.

FISHINGAnd all of our lakes are hot spots for ice fishing. It's almost like a village on some of the lakes with all their little houses.
