Dental Access Lancaster County (DALCO), a partnership among Lancaster County Dental Society, local dentists and Lancaster General Health, provides a “dental home” for low-income, uninsured patients. A dental home is a dental practice that provides ongoing care, including routine cleanings. Patients pay a small co-pay for each visit based on their income. DALCO’s database includes 123 local dental providers. Though the list continues to grow, it is small in comparison to the dental needs of the uninsured in this community. DALCO currently has a 3 month wait list. We are always looking for more dentists to participate with the DALCO program. If everyone does a little, no one will feel they are doing a lot. The DALCO providers have provided over $930,338 worth of donated dental care. We realize many dentists already link with other local organizations to provide dental care to those in need; but we are asking you to consider joining DALCO as well. Signing up to see even one patient WILL make a difference. If you would like to join this list of extraordinary community minded professionals or have questions about the DALCO program, please contact: Christine Eyer

A BIG THANK YOU TO ALL The Lancaster County Career and Technology Center’s Dental Assisting Program would like to thank all of the offices that graciously took our students on clinical rotations this spring. We realize that while having a student in your office each day for a month can have its challenges, we also know that the experience gained will enable these students to graduate and enter the workplace with their running shoes on. As you can well imagine, being able to integrate theory with hands-on is an integral part of a dental assistant’s education. Every spring, for 35 years, the dental offices and their staffs in Lancaster County have supported the LCCTC’s Dental Assisting Program with enthusiasm. For this effort, please know that we are truly grateful to each and every one of you. Our goal is to educate and make available to the dental community, quality, well-trained dental assistants that you would be eager to employee. Thank you again for all of your patience, support and dedication to our program. Kay Hudak Dental Assisting Instructor

CHI St. Joseph Children’s Health recently held their Giving Wings to Big Ideas Event to launch the organization’s new strategic plan. Over 75 supporters, community leaders and legislators attended the event to hear of six revolutionary tactics that will change the face of children’s health in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Three main strategic initiatives were introduced as the organization’s focus over the next several years: children’s oral health, access to care and emerging issues in children’s health.

This past year, CHI St. Joseph Children’s Health has been engaged on a journey of discovery. A journey leading us to recognize our potential and identify how we can play a role in creating a healthier Lancaster Community. Traditionally, we have come to be known as a children’s dental provider yet what we discovered was our potential to be more. Our experience, our resources, our commitment and our heritage within the community allow us to serve children and families to a greater extent. We are able to be:

A Provider – offering services in the community. An Advocate – advocating for change. A Grant Maker – supporting children’s health services and programs. An Innovator – starting new initiatives. A Facilitator – bringing stakeholders together. An Educator – teaching the knowledge and skills to make healthier choices.

To each of these roles we pledge to bring a bias for action pushing forward to create the healthier community that we all desirefor our children. This action takes the form of our three Strategic Initiatives: Children’s Oral Health, Access to Care and Emerging Issues in Children’s Health. There remains much work to be done for Children’s Oral Health. In 2004, we launched Brush.Brush.Smile!® our mobile dental clinics which provide services to children in need at each of the 16 Lancaster County School Districts. After more than 10 years of service through the Mobile Clinics, we still find that roughly 19,000 children throughout the County have never seen a dentist. We must do more, serve more, try more and model more to find a solution to this challenge. We are committed to doing just this. Beyond Oral Health, working with children and families in the community highlighted a struggle families were having accessing and utilizing health and dental benefits and services. Access to Care emerged as our second strategic initiative. In Pennsylvania it is possible for 100% of children to have health insurance. Across the Commonwealth we are making progress toward that possibility with 95% of children insured. However in Lancaster County we are reporting roughly 85% of the children in our community as having insurance coverage. We can do better, and we must do better. Yet, children’s health needs are not stagnant. Rather we live in a dynamic time which requires organizations such as CHI St. Joseph Children’s Health to be responsive, to be nimble and to be creative as we seek solutions. Our commitment to the community, our promise, is to be ever vigilant, to be assessing the landscape, identifying needs and responding to participate in and lead our efforts to find solutions and create an environment where every child in the Lancaster Community can grow up happy and healthy. This is just the start of the journey forward, a journey that we hope many of you will join. There is much to do and with that tremendous promise for the future. We look forward to being part of that future!

CHI St. Joseph Children’s Health Commissioned Artwork

The May event also included the unveiling of commissioned artwork by local artist Freiman Stoltzfus (see image above). The acrylic and pencil triptych features three wood panels that reflect each component of the organization: our founding by the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia, our place as a location of Catholic Health Initiatives and of our local role in Lancaster County – like that of St. Joseph to Jesus – to care for God’s children. The original triptych will be located in the corporate offices of CHI St. Joseph Children’s Health and signed embellished prints will be gifted to Catholic Health Initiatives and to the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia. Prints and notecards of the triptych are available for purchase by contacting Beth Grossmann at [email protected] or 717.397.7625.

INFORMATION REGARDING X-RAY CERTIFICATION/CPR and OSHA COMPLIANCELCDS members,Every year there are some important certifications and regulations that all doctors and their staff need to take into consideration for compliance. Some of these topics would be CPR, OSHA and X-ray certification. Please see information regarding these compliances.

X-RAY CERTIFICATION ~ Required every 4 years.

CPR ~ This program is for healthcare providers. List of some CPR Instructors in the Lancaster Area :Lancaster EMS ~ (717) 481-4841 ~ www.lemsa.comHACC ~ 1-800-222-4222 ~ www.hacc.eduSusquehanna Valley EMS ~ (717) 435-8101 ~ www.svems.orgRed Cross ~ www.redcross.org

Manheim Township Ambulance Association ~ (717)569-6622 ~ www.manheimtownshipems.orgEphrata Community Hospital ~ (717) 733-0311 ~ www.ephratahospital.org

CPR COMPLIANCE ~ Required every 2 years.

OSHA COMPLIANCE ~ Required Yearly

Please see requirements provided by PDA as to the number of CE needed. According to Pennsylvania regulation (25 Pa. Code, Section 221.11(b)) anybody who operates an x-ray machine in the state of Pennsylvania (dentists, assistants and hygienists) must take continuing education in radiology; the continuing education must cover four specific topics: radiation safety, biological effects, quality assurance and quality control. However, the regulation is very vague; it puts no minimum standard on how many CE credits must be obtained, or how often, it has always been left up to discretion. The Department of Environmental Protection recommends that anyone who operates an x-ray machine obtain 4 credit hours (or 2 contact hours) of radiology CE every 4 years,

but this is simply a recommendation. Contact hours are defined as traditional classroom CE, where CE credits are defined as self-study or less conventional CE methods. It is not the only way in which you can be complaint with PA law. Any continuing education in radiology, such as an online CE course, having a lecturer come into your office, etc. is in compliance with the law, as long as it covers the four above mentioned subject areas. It is important that you are doing something in terms of radiology CE. *So, yes our course does satisfy the standards set by Pennsylvania regulations even though it is only for 2 CE credits through the PDA online course.

Employees must also be trained anytime they are exposed to a new risk in the dental office that they were not previously exposed to. This training should be recorded and the record should be kept for three years.

• Each office must have an OSHA Job Safety and Health Protection poster posted in a prominent location in the office.  It can be downloaded for free at www.osha.gov. Emergency telephone numbers should be posted where can be easily located.

OSHA ~ Pennsylvania does not have its own OSHA plan, and rather depends on national OSHA standards. Here is a link to the Department of Labor page that talks specifically about OSHA requirements for dental offices:

OSHA annual training must cover both the blood borne pathogens and hazard communication standards.  According to the ADA, here is a list of what annual training should include:

https://www.osha.gov/Publications/OSH3187/osha3187.html

• Explanation of the Blood borne Pathogens Standard and Exposure Control Plan• General Information about the epidemiology and symptoms of blood borne diseases• Modes of transmission of blood borne pathogens• How to recognize tasks involving occupational exposure• Use and limits of engineering controls; work practice controls and personal protective equipment• Where PPE is located and how to use, remove, handle, decontaminate and dispose• How to select appropriate PPE• Effectiveness, safety, benefits and method of administering hepatitis B vaccine• What to do if there is an emergency spill of blood• What to do if there is an incidental exposure• Post-exposure evaluation• Labeling to warn against biohazards

DENTAL OCCUPATIONS TRAINING AT TEC CENTRO

THANK YOU FOR CONSIDERING US.

What you can do...We would like to suggest that individuals and organizations who believe in our mission of assisting individuals to train for a career path in dental occupations as well as to bring dental services to a marginalized community become involved with us to meet the following immediate needs: 1. We need a pan x-ray machine. 2. We need dentists and hygienists to provide classroom training and conduct community clinics. 3. We need initial funding to begin the training of dental assistants.

In the development of a training classroom for dentaloccupations, a fully functional dental clinic has been established containing 5 dental chairs and required equipment. 1. Training in dental occupations: classroom training for dental assistants will be conducted by a qualified instructor. Two cycles of dental assistant training will be run annually. The cost of training 15 students per cycle is $25,000. 2. We would like to utilize the clinic to provide the community (especially children) with checkups and preventative care.

The Spanish American Civic Association has made a significant investment in workforce development of the Latino community by creating the state's first bilingual technology center. Known, as Tec Centro, this community vocational training facility opened its doors in March 2014.

Tec Centro is organized to provide : Workforce English Instruction Adult Basic Education (GED) Job Placement Services Skills Training in Dental Occupations Allied Health Culinary Arts Construction Trades Office Occupations

The Mission of Mercy in Pennsylvania (MOM-N-PA) took place this past weekend at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex in Harrisburg. Patients starting arriving for the free dental care weekend long before the doors opened at 6am. 1,700 patients were seen and 6,405 procedures performed, that amounted to $884,598 worth of dentistry! The logistics for such a large operation were only possible using military like precision. Dentistry was done assembly line style - Dr. Todd Grambau volunteered his Saturday and spent four hours just numbing patients, who then moved on to their next stations - whether that was extractions, fillings or surgery. Even partials were offered - you had to come in on Friday, the pieces were manufactured over-night, and then fitted on Saturday. Patients were extremely grateful and it was fulfilling to see them get serious problems addressed. It feels completely different to be doing your job on such a large scale, and renews your feeling in why you are doing what you are doing. Stephanie Grambau was in charge of Patient Hospitality, and ensured that patients had food and water throughout the day - sometimes the wait could be several hours before the patients wound their way through the entire "system" - medical triage, dental triage, hygiene, numbing, procedures. Jenny Zehner, the PA State Alliance President, was there to volunteer her services, as was our LCDS Alliance Treasurer, Melissa Voler. Did you know that this is the third MOM in Pennsylvania, and that the national MOM organization holds clinics in 27 states? Next year the PA MOM is in

Pittsburgh. If you want to try it out, you can volunteer in shifts as little as 4 hours. Check out their website for more info: MOM-N-PA.com.

Alliance held its last meeting of the year on May 13 at Ciro's restaurant. We celebrated another successful year - our fundraising event, the Holiday Sharing Card, allowed us to fund both the Children's Dental Health Month Dental Kit Stuffing and the CDHM Poster Contest, and still give monetary donations to Water Street Rescue Mission's Dental Clinic, Welsh Mountain and St Joe's Brush Brush Smile Bus. Coverage of our events was picked up and published in the latest Pennsylvania Dental Journal, the official publication of the Pennsylvania Dental Association, plus our local Lancaster newspapers. Want to see your name in print? Make sure to participate in our events next year! Our group is a dedicated bunch of dental spouses who work to promote dental health in the community and support the dental family. And of course we like to have fun too! We have only 4 meetings a year, and take the summer off! If you would like to be involved with us, contact Stephanie Grambau at [email protected], or come to our next meeting, at 7pm the first Thursday in September, held at the office of Dr. Todd Grambau, 1891 Fruitville Pike Lancaster 17601. See you there!
