When fans think of Lamar track and field, the first person that has to come to mind is 15-year head coach Trey Clark, who restored one of the region’s most-storied programs back to a proud tradition since he took the helm on August 11, 1999. The numbers tell the story. He has 11 team titles as the head coach, 75 individual Southland Conference champions, 11 league Athletes of the Year and seven All-Americans. The Lamar graduate claims seven South-land Conference Newcomers of the Year, 10 Freshmen of the Year, three Outstanding Track Performers and four high point scorers. He has coached 34 current Lamar record holders and 113 athletes who currently rank in the top five in the school’s record books.

Clark, a former sprinter and hurdler for LU, first stepped on campus in 1988 and was named as an assistant coach under head coach Barry Collins. He is the Cardinals’ sixth head coach in program that started in 1953. Quite possibly one of his best accomplishments could be the restoration of Lamar’s distance pro-gram, which swept the Southland Conference Championships in both 2013 and 2014. The 2014 championship was the men’s’ eight overall and the women’s’ fifth. Three of the last four athletes of the year have come from Lamar, Matt Johnsen (2013, men’s), Sam Stabler (2014, men’s) and Minttu Hukka (2014, women’s). LU gained its first distance all-American since 1969 when Francis Kasagule achieved in back-to-back seasons in 2006-07. Since Samuel Kosgei (2008) and Johnsen (2012) have both done it. As a team, the men were one spot away from earning an auto-matic bid to the NCAA Championships in 2014 and the women two spots away. He was named as the Southland Conference Cross Country Coach of the Year in 2011. On Clark’s watch, Lamar earned its first ever indoor all-American when Kosgei finished eight at the NCAA Championships in 2009 in the 5,000-meter run. He has also coached two outdoor all-Americans in Joonas Harjamaki and Tom Wade. Both won it in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.

During his tenure, Lamar has 36 individual indoor champions, including a run of four years (2006-09) when LU had the men’s mile run champion. It also had the men’s 3,000-meter champion for four-straight years (2009-12). On the women’s side, he boasts a four year run of the distance medley relay (2005-08) and the 4x400 meter relay champions in 2000. The Lady Cardinals also have five one mile run and 3,000 meter champions. Big Red has 26 individual league champions, in-cluding the men’s 4x400 meter relay champions in 2003. From 2010-13, Lamar won three titles on the men’s 1,500 meter run and the women did it from 2006-07. Even before his time as a head coach, he was an important piece of the puzzle as the assistant coach. In his five years as an assistant, he worked with 33 league champions and 14 all-conference performers and worked with the two strongest parts of the program, relays and hurdles. He led the 4x100 meter relay team to the 1999

Southland Conference championships, and guided Mark LeDoux to two straight conference titles in the 400-meter hurdles and ninth place finish at the NCAA Championships. LeDoux had two appearances at the USA Track and Field Nationals as well. Clark also helped Yamelis Ortiz, who joined the Lamar Hall of Honor in 2014, to the Olympics on Puerto Rico’s 4x400-meter relay team in 2000. Ortiz was a four-time conference champion in the 400-meter hurdles. The four-year letterman was an all-conference performer and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in ki-nesiology in 1993 and a master’s in the same in 1995. He served as a part-time assistant in 1994. The Anahuac, Texas (Anahuac HS) native, is married to the former Laura Hughes and has two sons, Quade and Hayden.

Darren Gauson was named distance and cross country coach on September 17, 2012, and in that short time, he’s helped build upon Lamar’s outstanding distance tradition. The Edinburgh, Scotland, native guided both the men’s and women’s cross country programs to back-to-back Southland Conference titles 2013 and 2014, and helped develop three of the four individual champions during that span. In 2013 Both Matt Johnsen and Ash Harrell were key in the success for the men, finishing first and second at the conference meet en route to qualifying for the NCAA National Championships. Both Minttu Hukka and Sam Stabler dominated in 2014, both downing league records in the process. Gauson was named as the Southland Conference Cross Country Coach of the Year for both the men’s and women’s teams, both seasons. The women’s team, which had not tasted Southland glory since 2006, was comprised almost entirely of Gauson’s first recruiting class at LU. The group de-molished the field at the conference championships on the way to posting its best finish at the NCAA South Central Regional since 2007. In all, nine LU runners earned a spot on the 2013 All-Southland teams, and two more took home honorable mentions. Johnsen was named Athlete of the Year and both Harrell and Leigh Lattimore earned Newcomer of the Year. It was more of the same in the next season when Big Red took home five of the six specialty awards including men’s and women’s athletes of the year (Stabler and Hukka), Freshmen of the Year (Jan Lukas Becker and Hukka) and Newcomer of the Year (Jannika John). LU collected eight All-SLC athletes. Joining the program just after the start of the 2012 campaign, Gauson di-rected Johnsen to the NCAA Championships, placing 33rd and becoming just the fourth Lamar harrier to earn All-American honors since 1969. As his first year turned to the indoor season, two more of his athletes made some noise as both Joe Wade and Becky Gough took home Southland Conference indoor titles. Wade earned the mile championship, his third win of the season in the event, with a time of 4:08.80, marking the fastest time at the SLC meet since 1998. Gough won the 3,000 meter run, completing the race in

10:10.05. During outdoor sea-son, Wade earned his fifth career Southland title with a 1,500 meter win and end-ed the season with the top conference times in both the 1,500 and 5,000 meter runs as well as the 3,000 meter steeplechase. Both Gough and Claire Miles also earned all-conference designation in two events. Prior to Lamar, Gauson spent four seasons with Butler University, help-ing develop and maintain one of the most successful programs in the Horizon League. While at BU, the Bulldog men continued a streak of 14 consecutive conference championships in cross country, including a 29th place finish at the NCAA National Championships in 2008. He was also pivotal in the individual development of a number of athletes, including four All-Americans (Andrew Baker, Callum Hawkins, Steve Lisgo and Rob Mullet). Gauson also worked with sprinters and hurdlers, helping the group break four school records in three years. Prior to joining the Bulldog staff, Gauson was a standout athlete for BU for two seasons, earning a Horizon League crown in the 1,500 meter run in 2008. He’s also a former Scottish national champion in the event, winning in both 2004 and 2005. A 2006 graduate of Napier University in Scotland, Gauson holds a bache-lor’s degree in sport and exercise science. He completed his master’s in educa-tion at Butler in 2008. Gauson is married to the former Marbeth Shiell.

After putting together a stellar career at the University of New Mexico, Ale-sha Walker was named to Lamar’s staff on November 11, 2013. Walker, who spent the last two-plus seasons as a graduate assistant for the Lobos, was one of the school’s most-decorated athletes. The Killeen, Texas, native holds both the indoor and outdoor school records in the long jump and qualified for the 2008 Olympic Trials. “For the athletes that are here, I think having a former athlete that has been through what they have will be a big help,” explained LU head coach Trey Clark. “She’s brought in a wealth of experience, especially when you consider the kind of jumps program that New Mexico has. Any time that you can bring in someone that has that level of national exposure, it’s going to be huge for the athletes and their development.” While on staff at UNM, Walker had a number of everyday duties in the office, but worked primarily with the jumps program, which produced four All-America honorees in 2012 and three more in 2013. Walker graduated with a bachelor’s degree in psychology in 2011, and she’s currently pursuing her master’s in kinesiology.

THE SOUTHLAND CONFERENCE Now in its sixth decade of service, the Southland Conference continues to be a model of innovation, stability and consistent achievement as it celebrates the academic and athletic accomplishments of its member institutions. Having commemorated its 50th anniversary in 2013, the Southland Con-ference has transformed itself into a dynamic and respected consortium of 13 member universities inthree states. Beginning with a historic meeting of five institutions in Dallas on March 15,1963, the Southland Conference set on an extraordinary course that has proven successful well into its five decades of ex-istence. The successful transformation continues, as the Southland Conference welcomed fouradditional members in 2013: Abilene Christian University, Houston Baptist University, the University of Incarnate Word in San Antonio, and the Uni-versity of New Orleans. In addition to its newest members, the Southland also consists of the Univer-sity of Central Arkansas, Lamar University, McNeese State University, Nicholls State University, Northwestern State University, Sam Houston State University, Southeastern Louisiana Univer-sity, Stephen F. Austin State University and Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. All told, the membership of the Southland encompasses nearly 140,000 current students and an alumni base of nearly 800,000. Famous alums from current Southland Conference schools include former CBS news anchor Dan Rather (Sam Houston State), NBA executive Joe Dumars (McNeese State), ABC news anchor Robin Roberts (Southeastern Louisiana), Major League Baseball star Wade Miley (Southeastern Louisiana), NBA legend Scottie Pippen (Central Arkansas), and track and field Olympians Kenta Bell (Northwestern State), and Bobby Morrow and Billy Olson (both Abilene Christian). The Southland sponsors 17 championship sports, all at the NCAA Divi-sion I level. The eight men’s sports include baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, tennis, and indoor and outdoor track and field. The women com-pete for nine championships in basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, indoor and outdoor track and field, and volleyball. The conference earns

automatic qualification to NCAA championships in baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, football, men’s and women’s golf, women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, and volleyball.Continuing its tradition of innovation, the league launched the Southland Con-ference Television Network in the fall of 2008 and has broadcast more than 160 events. The network has expanded its reach to roughly 13 million households throughout Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas and Oklahoma in recent years, and has also gained national viewership through ESPN3 and Fox College Sports. In its

first six years, the network has receivedrecognition for its work, earning numerous College Sports Media and

Telly Awards. The Southland Conference, in con-

junction with the city of Frisco, Texas, and Hunt Sports Group, also serves as the host to the NCAA Division I Football Champion-ship Game in Frisco, which has been home to the conference headquarters since 2006.

The game is played at Frisco’s Toyota Stadium, and after a successful three-year run,

the partnership was rewarded with a three-year renewal to serve as the national championship host site through the 2015 season.

Head Coach Trey Clark with the portrait of the lives lost in a plane crash that claimed head coach Ty Terrell (very left), Don Delaune (right), Randy Clewis, Mike Favazza, and Waverly Thomas (left). Clark hoists the portrait in his office as a reminder of the successes of Coach Terrell and his team despite lesser advantage of other universities. The plane went down on April 28, 1968 on the way home from the Drake Relays.
