ANNUAL REPORT 2015BRINGING HOPE…CHANGING LIVES…

Real Action to Empower

Todays Youth

CHANGING LIVES OF AFGHAN YOUTH

HOPE worldwide has been operating in Afghanistan for the last 15 years. We have come a long way, yet there is still so much to do. In June 2012, we scaled down our programmes due to reduced funding and a worsening security situation and were looking to completely pull out of Afghanistan by the end of 2012!

We took a decision of faith to continue in Afghanistan and stay true to our purpose of bringing hope and changing lives. And so the HOPE Community Center was established and has now been operating for over 3 years. The centre has touched the lives of 352 students by educating 178 in Computers and 174 in English. Of these graduates many have found jobs and others have progressed in their careers as young professionals, and to do this in a war torn country is remarkable! In addition to benefitting youth, it has brought hope to their families who benefit from the salaries they bring home.

A few words of gratitude: firstly to the staff who risk their lives serving the poor and providing a beacon of HOPE to vulnerable youth. They continue to provide a strong commitment, careful instruction and inspiration to their students. And secondly to the individuals who have donated funds to support this initiative, especially at a time when funds were in short supply.

Afghanistan continues to be one of the poorest countries in the world, hampered by natural disasters, internal conflict and abject poverty. Some progress has been made since 2001, but with declining international aid there is still a lack of basic education and health services, widespread poverty and high unemployment which fuels crime and civil unrest. Despite the challenges, we need to continue to do our small part and hold on to the glimmer of hope that is well defined in this famous Afghan proverb: ‘a river is made drop by drop’.

We look forward to your continued support in 2016.

Mohammad Shoab is a differently able student who studied English at our community centre. Despite his daily challenges of managing his life with polio he inspires many through his life. After the completion of his course he started to teach Spoken English at a local English learning centre (Sadat English Language & Computer Training

center) where he works as a part time English language instructor. He also helps his six siblings in their studies at home while his father runs a cloth shop in the local market. He is continuing his education as a 10th grader and aspires to be a doctor. He is grateful to HOPE for helping him to learn English.

ENABLING OTHERS(FEATURED STORY FROM COMMUNITY CENTRE)

Despite Shoab daily challenges of living with Polio… he inspires many by his life.

INSPIRATION FOR MANY

At HOPE community centre, we have the tradition of celebrating the students’ successful course completion. We hold a ceremony

CELEBRATIONS AT THE

COMMUNITY CENTRE.

inviting special guests and all the students are awarded a certificate. All the students have an opportunity to give their feedback and express gratitude both teachers and donors. The students also share their aspirations for the future.

The English course takes over eight months. The Computer course takes just over six months. In 2015 we had 117 Students graduate- the highest number. This comprised of 56 students in Computers and 61 in English Language. Students learned how to use Windows, Microsoft Office, the Internet, advanced written and spoken English. We also had a number of girls, graduates- for privacy and in accordance with Afghan culture, their pictures are not published.

We were also honored to have Miss Saleha Hussainzada from Australia, volunteer at the HOPE Community Center in 2015.

Ms. Hussainzada put in a lot of effort to ensure students learned how to design their own websites, using award-winning course material developed in the UK. She was with us for two

weeks and also shared about how it was like to live in Australia as an Afghan. We found her to be polite, humble, accommodating and very patients as she responded to the many questions that students presented to her! HOPE worldwide Afghanistan honour’s the spirit of volunteerism which is an effort to bring hope and change lives.

I don’t see any improvement in safety and security services for the people of Afghanistan. People are moving abroad with their families. And they are hesitant to invest money in their businesses due to uncertainty in law and order situation. Many young people are jobless despite being educated and well experienced. Most of our young Afghan

brothers who left for better job prospects get caught without proper immigration papers in other countries. They are either sent back home or jailed by the authorities there. Afghanistan is slowly heading towards recession. Since the Taliban’s attack on Kunduz - one of the biggest provinces of Afghanistan, the situation has worsened. But there are few good people and organizations that are shining in the midst of this hopeless situation. HOPE community center is one such program which is bringing hope to the youth by giving them skills without charging any fee. The center has full support from the community as they see their children getting benefitted. (the words expressed here of Mr. Aminullah, in his personal capacity.)

“There are few good people and organizations that are shining in the midst of this hopeless situation.”

“Going out of the way to make a difference”
