2015 pREviEw: GRACE voLLEybALL REAdiES foR fiRSt SEASoN uNdER vAN hofwEGEN

A new era begins this August for Grace College’s volleyball team. First-year head coach Katie Van Hofwegen is poised to im-print her unique style onto the Lady Lanc-ers in 2015.

Van Hofwegen inherits a program that has racked up 106 wins over the past four seasons. Grace has advanced to the NC-CAA National Semifinals twice since 2011, including last year’s squad which finished 30-12.

Van Hofwegen, who played collegiately at Shorter (Ga.) and was an assistant coach at NCAA Div. II Virginia-Wise, admitted things would look different on the court this fall.

“I’m really excited about the season. We are changing things from last year, but the ladies are working hard with the transi-tion,” Van Hofwegen said. “They are com-mitted to learning our new system. Based on the level of talent we have, we’ll be pretty good once we get it down.”

Already through preseason, the Lady Lancers have impressed their new coach with a voracious work ethic. Led by the team’s co-captains — senior outside hitter Alix Underwood and junior outside hitter Megan Johnson — the ladies have applied themselves fully to learning their new coach and new system. “The team is com-mitted to working hard. They are willing to run through walls to learn the new sys-tem,” Van Hofwegen continued. “They’re excited about it, which excites me. They’re committed and are holding each other ac-countable. They are a coach’s dream in that sense.”

While three NCCAA National Champi-onship appearances in four seasons is im-pressive, the Lady Lancers are hoping for more in 2015. The team’s goal is to reach NAIA Nationals for the first time since 2001. Additionally, Van Hofwegen is hop-ing the squad wins every home game at the Manahan Orthopaedic Capital Center (MOCC). “We have to stay disciplined and

committed to fine-tuning the details of our game. But if we remain committed, we should reach our goals.”

Grace is replacing a number of key posi-tions from 2014 — including All-Americans at setter (Ellie Harp) and outside hitter (Calah Kruse) as well as the team’s libero Hannah Clemmons. Junior Kaitlin Kerri-gan is the squad’s most accomplished of-fensive threat, racking up 421 kills and 312 digs last year. Returning as a starter on the opposite side is 6-foot-2 Sierra Smith (208 kills, 76 blocks). Naarah Foster and Cas-saundra Worthen also figure to play on the opposite side.

The middle hitters are a diverse, talent-ed group, spearheaded by 6-foot-1 Grace Woolsey and 6-2 Tori Bontrager. Woolsey was No. 2 in the NAIA for total blocks last season, and Bontrager had 239 kills on a team-high .272 attack percentage. Kari Feddema and Savannah Hart rejoin the front row for their sophomore campaigns.

The back row will be anchored by the returning trio of Jessica Scherb, Annie Salazar and Sara Miller. The group ac-counted for 5.61 digs/set last year, led by Miller’s 326 digs.

Joining a strong crop of returners are four dynamic fresh-men. Caylie Teel (Tippecanoe Valley HS) has impressed in the preseason with her ability to play both defensive spe-cialist and outside hitter. Marta Bleed (Blackhawk Christian) and Kelsee Zuidema (Spring Lake, Mich.) are set to contribute as a pair of 6-foot outside hitters, and setter McKenzie Haite (LaPorte) has show-cased a mix of ath-

leticism and volleyball IQ in her first few weeks.

Haite is one of three setters on Grace’s roster this fall. Haite, along with sopho-more Laken Chaney and junior Taylor Baird, form one of the more interesting positional battles on campus. All three setters add a unique element to the squad, which could result in Grace running a two-setter rota-tion, according to Van Hofwegen.

An area that Van Hofwegen plans to focus on is serving and serve receive. Im-proving that aspect is necessary in her words because “serving wins games; we want the ball in our hands to score points.”

Off the court Grace will be heavily in-volved in community service with a focus on developing servant leadership, accord-ing to Van Hofwegen. “The team has ver-balized wanting to become well-rounded spiritually and to grow in their faith, so we will look for ways to encourage and serve fellow students, peers and our commu-nity.”

The season officially gets started with the Grace College Classic at the MOCC on Aug. 21-22. The Lady Lancers will host IU-East, Trinity Christian, St. Ambrose and IU-Kokomo in the tournament.

Katie Van Hofwegen will serve in her first year as the head volleyball coach for the Lady Lancers in 2015.

Van Hofwegen comes from The University of Virginia-Wise (NCAA Div. II) where she served as the top assistant coach since 2012. She has a wide berth of volleyball experience that spans across the country.

Van Hofwegen played collegiate volleyball at Shorter University (Ga.). An accomplished defensive player, she was honored as the Southern States Athletic Conference Libero of the Year in 2010 and was a two-time All-Conference winner.

She graduated as the school’s all-time leader in service aces (163) and was a Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete with a 3.5 GPA. She also finished school ranked No. 2 in career digs with 1,536 and has the school record for most service aces in a single season with 66.

“We are very excited with the outcome of our coaching search. Katie Van Hofwegen has a tremendous background in volleyball and has enjoyed success both as a player and coach,” said Grace athletic director Chad Briscoe. “She is a teacher of the game and is fully committed to assisting student-athletes grow in all aspects of their life during their college experience. I look forward to watching our program grow and achieve success both on and off the court under her leadership.”

While at Virginia-Wise, Van Hofwegen assisted the school’s transition from NAIA to NCAA Div. II. She helped the program over-come a 7-25 record in 2012 to earn its best season in seven years during the 2014 campaign. She was responsible for recruiting, travel coordinating, game tape exchange and practice planning for the Cavaliers. She helped secure one of the best and largest recruiting classes in program history.

In 2011 Van Hofwegen served on the coaching staff at NCAA Div. III Randolph College (Va.), working extensively with recruiting, travel and practice scheduling. She also has multiple years of experience coaching club volleyball and staffing summer camps, including the Liberty University volleyball camp. She originally hails from Riverside, Calif., where she attended Riverside Christian.

“I’m excited to start this new chapter at Grace College,” Van Hofwegen said. “The volleyball program has a great tradition of suc-cess, and I plan to continue building on that tradition. I’m looking forward to meeting the team, sharing my faith with them, and leading them both spiritually and as volleyball players. I’m really grateful for this opportunity, and I’m ready to get started.”

Van Hofwegen takes over a volleyball program that has racked up 106 wins over the past four seasons.

The Lady Lancers have advanced to three NCCAA National Championships since 2011, including two trips to the national semifinals (2011, 2014).

Commissioner Tom Seitz | www.crossroadsleague.com

The newly named Crossroads League (CL), formerly the Mid-Central College Conference, underwent a name and logo change in the summer of 2012, but its values remain the same. It is the purpose and function of the CL to promote intercollegiate ath-letics in a well-rounded athletic program. The CL seeks to main-tain high ideals and to promote sportsmanship and a friendly understanding among member colleges.

The Crossroads League is a 10-institution athletic conference in the NAIA. The CL offers 15 year round sports throughout Indi-ana, Michigan and Ohio. The league will continue to be a pioneer

in academic excellence, competitive athletics and a faith-driven focus on and off the field.

The CL consists of 10 colleges and universities: Bethel College (Mishawaka, IN); Goshen College (Goshen, IN); Grace College (Winona Lake, IN); Huntington University (Huntington, IN); Indi-ana Wesleyan University (Marion, IN); Marian University (India-napolis, IN); Mt. Vernon Nazarene University (Mount Vernon, OH); University of St. Francis (Fort Wayne, IN); Spring Arbor University (Spring Arbor, MI); and Taylor University (Upland, IN).

The Manahan Orthopaedic Capital Center is

a marvelous facility. This state-of-the-art ath-

letic venue is unrivaled in the conference. It is

a clear example of local companies and higher

education working in harmony to create a place

for campus and the community at large. This is

a great example of the future for Grace College

and Kosciusko County.
