SETON HILL HEAD COACH: After a successful tenure in NCAA Division III, Isaac Collins has posted a 4-18 overall record in three years as head coach with the Griffins. He earned his first victory at Seton Hill in the last game of the 2013 regular season, snapping the program’s 23-game losing streak. Collins previously served three years as head coach at Widener, leading the program to a pair of wins in the 2012 NCAA Playoffs.

SCOUTING THE GRIFFINS: Behind eight returning starters on offense, Seton Hill ranks third in the PSAC, and tops in the Western Division, with 315.3 passing yards/game. Sophomore quarterback Christian Strong has passed for nearly 800 yards and seven touchdowns in the last two weeks, including 472 yards and four scores in last week’s upset victory over then-nationally ranked Slippery Rock. Freshman Ardell Brown leads the team with 366 receiving yards and three touchdowns while averaging 19.3 yards/catch and junior Jarvis McClam ranks among the league leaders with 25 receptions. Senior Brandon Stout paces the ground game with 256 rushing yards after totaling over 30 catches last season. The Griffins rank last in the league in total defense, allowing 537.3 yards/game and also sit last in the West in scoring defense (40.0 points/game) and rushing defense (234.5 yards/game).Junior linebacker Nicholas Boynton sits fourth in the PSAC with 40 tackles (27 solo), while senior defensive Robert Brown has tallied 32 stops (27 solo) and two interceptions. On special teams, McClam has developed in to one of the league’s top return specialists, as he leads the PSAC with 772 all-purpose yards this season. Senior Jesser Boulnemour ranks fourth among league kickers with 30 points on 15 PAT attempts and five field goals.

PRESEASON PREDICTIONS: The Vulcans were picked to finish fourth in the preseason PSAC West poll after tying for third place in the divisional standings in each of the last three seasons. Meanwhile, Seton Hill was picked to finish sixth in the PSAC West after posting just a combined three overall wins in its two seasons as a member of the league.

GROUND GAME: In last week’s victory, Cal U amassed 308 rushing yards on 52 attempts while featuring three different running backs who each posted at least 40 yards on the ground. Sophomore John Franklin III paced the team with a career-high 196 rushing yards on 31 attempts, while freshman Jimmy Wheeler totaled 72 yards on nine carries and senior Derrick Fiore finished with 40 yards on seven attempts. The Vulcans last eclipsed 300 rushing yards in a game against Lake Erie in 2008 (347 yards, 39 carries).

JFIII: Sophomore running back John Franklin III has rushed for at least one touchdown in each game this season, including a career-high three scores last week. Against Edinboro, he nearly became the first running back since Daine Williams in the 2007 NCAA Playoffs to reach 200 rushing yards in a game. Franklin also set a career high with 31 carries in the victory to mark the program’s first 30-attempt game since the 2010 season. A native of Ohio, he ranks third in the PSAC with 440 rushing yards on a league-high 84 attempts.

BROWN DELIVERS: After missing six-plus quarters due to injury, junior wide receiver Garry Brown returned to action last week and recorded the seventh 100-yard game of his career (12 starts). He led all players with 107 receiving yards and tied his career high with 10 catches. Despite missing the time, Brown still ranks seventh in the PSAC with 373 receiving yards and is among the league leaders with 20.7 yards/reception.

SUBER LINEBACKER: Sophomore Devonte Suber led the team and set a career high with 10 tackles (six solo) last week at Edinboro while the Vulcans were without fellow linebacker Luke Hrapchak, the team’s leading tackler. Suber ranks third on the team this season with 25 tackles (13 solo) despite posting only one stop in the season-opener. As a true freshman last year, he finished with 17 tackles with eight stops coming while playing on special teams.

BLOCK PARTY: The Vulcans recorded their first blocked kick of the year in last week’s victory at Edinboro. Early in the second quarter, junior Vondel Bell blocked a 43-yard field goal with Cal U holding a 13-2 lead. Last season, Bell recovered a blocked punt in the final game of the season against Lock Haven. The Vulcans have totaled 26 blocked kicks since 2011, including seven in each of the past two years.

TROUBLING FLAGS: Last week, Cal U was penalized a season-high 15 times for 135 yards in the win at Edinboro. The Vulcans are now the most penalized team in the PSAC, and ninth-most in the country, this season and lead the league with 117.3 penalty yards/game behind 10 personal fouls. Cal U, which also ranked first in the PSAC with 85.2 penalty yards/game last year, has surpassed 100 yards in penalties three times this fall - all victories.

QUARTER START: Junior offensive lineman Tyler Peerson made his 25th career start, all consecutive, last week at Edinboro. He is the team’s active career leader in starts and has started every games since the 2013 season-opener. Peerson entered the year with 21-straight starts at right tackle before making the transition to left guard. Former offensive lineman Nick Piccirillo (2007-10) holds the all-time school record with 51 career starts.

IMPACT BOWMAN: In last week’s victory against Edinboro, junior defensive back Jordan Bowman played a part in two takeaways that led to touchdowns. He forced a fumble on the opening Fighting Scots possession near midfield and later registered an interception midway through the second quarter deep in Edinboro territory. In just 17 career starts, Bowman has registered 10 takeaways (eight interceptions) and scored two touchdowns.

WILD WILD WEST: Last weekend, the top-three teams in the preseason PSAC West poll suffered surprising losses in the opening week of divisional play. Preseason-favorite Gannon suffered a 47-31 loss at Clarion, who is the only undefeated team remaining in the 16-team PSAC. Defending-league champion Slippery Rock dropped a 41-38 contest at Slippery Rock after missing a potential, game-tying 22-yard field goal with 1:00 left in the fourth quarter. Meanwhile, Mercyhurst suffered a 41-35 loss to IUP after the Crimson Hawks returned three interceptions for touchdowns in the victory.

S’MORE-Y: Sophomore wide receiver Luke Smorey has caught a touchdown pass in each of the last two weeks while tallying only four total receptions during that span. Through four games, he has posted 155 receiving yards on eight catches with three touchdowns. Half of Smorey’s receptions this year have been for at least 20 yards with each of his three scores being catches of at least 29 yards.

FRIENDLY CONFINES: The Vulcans have posted a 55-11 overall record, including a 30-3 mark in PSAC West play, at Adamson Stadium since 2005.

ETTRICK, Va. – Quarterback James Harris passed for nearly 400 yards and four touchdowns and wide receiver Garry Brown totaled almost 250 all-purpose yards and two scores, as the Vulcans posted a 35-16 victory in the season-opener at Virginia State on Saturday afternoon. Harris finished with 387 passing yards and four touchdowns while completing 12-of-14 attempts. He helped the Vulcans jump out to a 28-9 lead after passing for 299 yards and three scores in the first half. Brown posted 203 yards and two touchdowns on just four receptions against the Trojans. He totaled a staggering 177 yards on his touchdown receptions and added a 40-yard return on the game’s opening kickoff. The Vulcans raced out to a 7-0 lead on the game’s opening play from scrimmage when Harris connected with wide receiver Kowan Scott for a 50-yard touchdown. Virginia State failed to convert a fourth down on the ensuing drive before Brown scored on a 90-yard touchdown reception. Cal U stretched the lead to 21-0 when Harris found Brown for an 87-yard touchdown on the initial play of the second quarter. The Trojans then mounted an 80-yard scoring drive before the Vulcans responded with a three-yard touchdown score by running back John Franklin III. Defensive lineman Tyler Haddock finished with five tackles, 3.0 TFL and 2.0 sacks, while fellow defensive lineman Jawan Turner added five stops and 2.0 TFL. A trio of players collected four tackles and eight different players registered at least 1.0 TFL.
