Our levels and curriculumOur curriculum is based on the levels of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. CEFR was put together by the Council of Europe and is used all over the world as the standard for grading individuals’ language proficiency.

The CEFR descriptors indicate the proficiency that should be achieved at each level. The table above includes a summary, and includes comparable levels of other common standards.

First-day testing establishes starting levels so we can make sure that everyone is in the right class. Completing one level usually takes about 10-12 weeks but with effort, involvement and motivation this can be achieved in a shorter period of time.

Long-stay AdvantagesGeneral and Intensive English can be studied for up to 48 weeks at LAL schools (except Gozo), subject to visa restrictions. Regular tutorials, progress tests and reports help students set and achieve short and long-term goals; and dedicated tutors help to plan study time to make sure that free time is spent feeling relaxed and confident. Intensive EnglishThis course adds an additional 7.5 hours of English to your core course. The additional 10 afternoon lessons each week will give you the opportunity to put into practice the new language learnt in the General English Course. You will develop your reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. You will also work on extending your vocabulary. During these lessons the main focus will be to help you speak more fluently and interact more effectively in a variety of real life situations.

General EnglishThis course is for students who wish to communicate effectively in everyday situations and gain a sound understanding of the principles of the English language. The course provides you with the opportunity to improve the skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking as well as enhancing and increasing your vocabulary and grammar knowledge. There will be a focus on fluency and accuracy. By the end of the course you can expect to have improved your communicative competence and feel more confident and independent as a learner.

Cambridge English ExamsCambridge English is the part of the University of Cambridge which provides qualifications for English language learners. Cambridge certificates can be used as proof of proficiency for university admissions, immigration or employment in most English speaking countries. The exam tests reading, writing, listening and speaking skills in English. All our schools offer a range of these courses, and LAL Fort Lauderdale is an official testing centre.

• FCE – Cambridge English: First – An Upper-Intermediate level qualification – It proves you can use everyday written and spoken English for work or study purposes.

• CAE – Cambridge English: Advanced – a practical advanced level course – great if you want to study or work abroad and develop a career which requires language skills.

• CPE - Cambridge English: Proficiency, also known as Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE), is our most advanced qualification. It proves you have achieved an extremely high level in English.

IELTSThe International English Language Testing System is recognised by academic institutions worldwide. If you are applying for a higher education course in the UK, Australia, New Zealand or Canada, IELTS might well be an entrance requirement for these.

TOEFLTOEFL is the Test of English as a Foreign Language. Though American in design, it’s recognised worldwide as an entrance qualification at select academic institutions.

Academic Focus Diploma LAL is proud to offer our AFD course for long-term students of English. This is a true academic course to ensure that the opportunities for future studies in higher or further education are maximised.


Intensive structureThe Academic Focus Diploma programme is based on our Intensive English course, with 30 lessons per week, in classes of no more than 12 students. The focus is on English for Academic Purposes, rather than General English.

Broader experienceA rounded experience is important, so we are including one excursion per month. These will be accompanied by a member of staff to provide guidance and information.

University stepsAttending university open days and campus tours (subject to availability) are all part of the course. CELTAGain a life-long qualification for teaching English that’s recognised worldwide! The Cambridge CELTA course is designed for people with little or no English teaching experience.

The course includes a mixture of training sessions, observing experienced teachers and assessed teaching practice with real English language students.

DELTAThe Cambridge DELTA Course is intended for English teachers with at least two years of teaching experience who want to extend their knowledge and skills. The course leads to the most widely recognised Diploma in English Language Teaching.

Travelling ClassroomThe Travelling Classroom is a once in a lifetime experience. LAL London has two school residences, both within minutes of the school.

Grosvenor Hall

2 mins from schoolGrosvenor Hall is located behind LAL London across the road with a twin studio and nine single rooms in two flats available all year. During the summer LAL will occupy even more of this building giving access to more beds. All floors have apartments with five to seven single bedrooms sharing two bathrooms and a kitchen.

LAL Allied House+

Above the schoolAllied House is two floors above the school. With only three double rooms and one twin room, the residence is more boutique in its offer than Grosvenor Hall, and extremely popular with LAL students.

Host Home

up to 45 mins from schoolStaying with an English host home is a great way to discover the English way of life, and practise the English learned in our lessons. We work very closely with our accommodation agency, established for over 20 years, and we try to find a home which is just right. For people who book with a friend, we offer shared rooms as well. Choose from bed and breakfast or half board.

About Torbay: the English Riviera

Torbay is a traditional English seaside resort but our excellent climate, sub-tropical gardens, harbours full of luxury yachts, and elegant houses overlooking the sea have given the area the nickname of ‘the English Riviera’.

The Bay is surrounded by some of the most beautiful countryside in England and is within easy reach of world-famous sights, such as Dartmoor, Stonehenge and the Cornish coasts.

Millions of tourists come to Torbay for relaxing beach holidays, to explore the beautiful surroundings, to enjoy water sports out on the waves, or just to have a fun-filled trip: the English Riviera offers something for everyone.

Brixham is the smallest Riviera town and is one of Britain’s key fishing ports, with lovely coastal walks from its pretty harbour.

The Day’s Inn Residence is fully air-conditioned and has central heating. It also offers a communal kitchen and laundry facilities.

`T7* above the schoolThe Migiarro Residence is conveniently situated above the school and offers very comfortable accommodation in three self-catering apartments fully furnished to high standards.

Each apartment has three twin or triple bedrooms most with a private balcony, a shower room, bathroom, fully-fitted kitchen and a spacious living area.

Students can choose to share a room with another student or have a single room for a supplement. The penthouse on the top floor has two twin bedrooms. All students in the residence have access to the large terrace area. Wireless Internet is available in all apartments.
