September 20 & 27The Saint John’s BibleTeacher: The Rev. Dr. John Ragsdale
The Saint John’s Bible is the first handwritten and hand-illuminated Bible to be produced in over 500 years. Commissioned by the Benedictine Abbey of Saint John the Baptist in Collegeville, Minnesota, its hand lettering and stunning art present the word of God in a truly engaging and inspiring way. Discover why this work was produced, what a biblical illumination is and how this unique Bible allows us to see scripture in a different way.
October 4 Missionaries Jim and Jodi McGillJim and Jodi McGill have been missionary co-workers in Malawi since 1995. Jim is the clean-water and construction coordinator for the Presbyterian Church in Central Africa. Jodi is a healthcare educator serving several hospitals regionally. Learn about their experiences and glimpse God’s work in this little known land.
October 11 & 18Converging Conversations with the Cosmos…and MeTeacher: Rev. Paul SeltzerPaul Seltzer grew up in Silver Spring, Maryland. He earned academic degrees from the University of Maryland, Gettysburg Theological Seminary and Drew University. He served as a Lutheran pastor for twenty-one years.
Rev. Paul Seltzer conducted a very popular class in the winter of 2013 with the same title. We will continue to explore examples of the expanding movement toward the healing of the historic divide between religion and science. Particular attention will be given to considering some of the personal and institutional ramifications of this dawning. Rev. Seltzer will also lead classes on the mornings of October 10, 13 and 17. February 28-March 20Christianity and Today’s CosmologyJim Dobson was a professor at the University of Mass. He ran a major lab there for many
years. He is teaching in Jacksonville now. Jay Wright has taught a variety of classes at Riverside Presbyterian Church. After studying with the Jesuits, he was an art museum director for many years as well as an administrator at JU. He is also an artist and poet.
The cosmology (the understanding of the universe) that underlies Christianity is from earlier scientific and theological insights. A new cosmology based on modern science and modern theology is evolving. The course will examine the past cosmology and how it influenced classical western Christianity. It will also examine the implications of modern cosmology for our present day theology and spirituality. In particular it will look at the insights of Teilhard de Chardin, Process Theology and Pope Francis, especially his recent encyclical LAUDATO SI.
March 27Easter Conversation with Rev. Dr. Steve Goyer BittingerCome hear an Easter day reflection and enjoy a light breakfast. This gathering will be held in Bittinger.
April 3-May 22State of Jacksonville and a Christian ResponseWhat are the major issues in Jacksonville that affect our community and its people? We will address several of Jacksonville’s social and civic issues by bringing in local experts and leaders and looking at how we respond to these issues as individual Christian citizens and as a community of faith.

Sunday Morning
September 20–October 25Being a Millennial ChristianTeacher: Emily HeegIt has been said that young adults are not antagonistic toward the church; they are just indifferent to it. So how does the “millennial generation” articulate and live out their faith? This class is for those in their 20’s and 30’s who would like to explore how religiousness is changing and what it means to be a millennial Christian.
November 29–December 20Living the QuestionsLiving the Questions is an alternative to studies that attempt to give participants all the answers and instead strives to create an environment where participants can interact with one another in exploring what’s next for Christianity. The 20-minute video segments include conversations with leading voices of faith, digital stories illustrating aspects of an evolving faith, and concrete spiritual practices and disciplines.
January 3–31Why Good People Are Divided by Politics and ReligionTeacher: Jamie HoenerIf you have ever wondered how an otherwise thoughtful friend, fellow congregant or family member can adhere to moral beliefs different than your own, join us for this study. This book shows how moral judgments arise not from reason, but from gut feelings. The author shows why liberals, conservatives, and libertarians have such different intuitions about right and wrong, and why each side is actually correct about many of its central concerns. This book challenges the way we think about liberals and conservatives, atheism and religion, good and evil, and may ultimately change the way we listen to and learn from one another.
February 14–March 20What Are You Waiting For?: Pausing with GodTeachers: Jamie Hoener, Rebecca Langer, Nancy Splane and guests A broad look at the ways we pause with God, what happens when we do, and what difference it makes in our personal lives and in all of creation.

“Connect” Education Building: Room 304Teachers: Mark & Stuart Harbison, Melissa Coll, Mandy Alvarez
Connect is made for middle schoolers. “Solid theology and quirky humor” is what Sparkhouse says about this curriculum. Connect helps our middle schoolers learn about the Bible in a deeper way than they have in their elementary classes but keeps the fun and quirkiness which in turn keeps our middle schoolers attention. There are great videos, fun activities and awesome teachers!
Sunday Morning
729 Post St (Youth Building)Teachers: Mark Rosenberg, Lynne Matson and Tracy Tousey
Sometimes our high schoolers need places of reprieve. A break from the busyness of school and life. Since they go to so many different schools, Sunday School is one of the places where they can breathe, gather and share about their lives, ask for advice, respond to challenging questions by their teachers and in turn learn more about themselves, eachother, and most importantly, their faith journey.

The Mustard SeedsThis new group is called "The Mustard Seeds" (Matthew 13:31-32). This group has as its mission making the landscaping around Riverside look just a little better. Oh, yes, we do have some "mow, blow and go" guys but they don't do the little things like sprinkling a bit of fertilizer when it's needed or trimming dead material out of plants or pruning back things that are overgrown. The work is only occasional and we have lots of fun while we work! Check out the new caladiums at the back entrance to the educational building!Interested? Riverside is a congregational partner of Fonkoze, an amazing micro-finance cooperative to help provide education, literacy and small loans to women in Haiti (www.fonkoze.org). Our goal is to be a catalyst for local congregations to join forces to provide greater impact on the poverty and lives of women in Haiti. We do this by providing education, travel and fundraising opportunities throughout the year. You can even travel to Haiti in February 2016 to see Fonkoze’s “staircase out of poverty” with your own eyes. Turn in your collected loose change to the woven baskets in the Narthex on the first Sunday of each month to support Fonkoze’s “Ti Kredi” or “Little Credit” program for women. Also, Riverside supports PCUSA missionaries in Haiti and our youth group sponsors the education of students at the high school sponsored by Haiti Outreach Ministries.
