LAST TIME V. BREVARDJEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – No. 21 Carson-Newman (2-1. 1-0 South Atlantic Conference) rolled up 496 yards of total offense in a 55-42 road win over Brevard (0-3, 0-1 SAC) Saturday afternoon at Brevard Memorial Stadium.

With the win, Ken Sparks moves past Pop Warner and into sixth place by himself on the all-time wins list. Sparks has 320 career wins. He’s three away from legendary Alabama coach Bear Bryant and his 323 career victories.

The Eagles had five different players score touch-downs. C-N didn’t score on a drive until it turned it over on downs on its sixth possession.

“We were able to answer everything that Brevard did,” Sparks said. “Defensively I thought we did alright, but there were fluky plays that they capi-talized on. We jump over the quarterback and he throws a touchdown pass. There were three or four plays where we do good stuff on defense, but then we’d find a way to give it back to them.”

Brevard rolled up 419 yards on the ground and 480 yards of total offense. However, the Eagles turned up the heat in the second half defensively with six sacks of Brevard quarterback Tanner Wright.

The Eagles got a spark right out of the gate when Lonnie Williams (Philadelphia, Pa.) brought back the opening kickoff 100 yards along the right sideline for a touchdown 15 seconds into the game.

Williams’ kickoff return for a touchdown is the first for Carson-Newman since Buck Wakefield housed from 94 yards out against Grand Valley State in the 2009 playoffs.

“The kicking game showed a lot of life,” Sparks said. “We dominated I thought and that was criti-cal. Coach Reveiz and our kickoff unit deserve medals for their improvement. Lonnie Williams was a weapon in himself with those 10 guys mak-ing blocks for him. It was a great way to open the game. Sometimes you can have a let down after that, but we continued to play good ball. This is one that we can build one.”

Carson-Newman and Brevard traded punches for their first five drives. An Eric Cain (Dandridge, Tenn.) interception proved to be the difference early on. The pick led to Jamal Jones (Chatta-nooga, Tenn.) recovering a botched snap in the end zone to put C-N up 21-7 with 2:28 left in the first quarter.

Brevard countered with a Jordan Ollis’ two-yard dive over the right guard 1:11 into the second quarter.

The Eagles snaked ahead by three scores on their next two possessions. TraShaun Ward (Miami, Fla.) was on the receiving end of a 68-yard out and up route from De’Andre Thomas (Milled-geville, Ga.). C-N then picked up a short field off a shanked Brevard and personal foul penalty. Thomas took the next play 17 yards around right tackle to push C-N’s lead to 34-14.

“We have to continue to develop ourselves,” Sparks said. “I thought today was a major step in that direction. At the end of the year we want to be a good football team. Our guys needed some encouragement because they’ve been beat down the last couple weeks cause we haven’t played well at all. They got that encouragement from today’s game.”

The Eagles and Tornados traded touchdowns the rest of the way, with Brevard getting the last TD on a Wright 12-yard scoring scamper with 1:39 left in the game to set the final margin at 55-42 Eagles.

• Carson-Newman saw a streak of 27 consecu-tive weeks in the AFCA Top 25 snapped when it lost in back-to-back weeks last year to Lenoir-Rhyne and Newberry. The Eagles received votes in the final two polls of the 2014 season. • Carson-Newman is receiving votes to start the 2015 season, this marks the first time since 2012 that the Eagles have started the year unranked.

• The Eagles haven’t found the top 10 since reaching number 10 in week four of the 2013 poll. The Eagles promptly fell out of the top 10 that year with a 25-22 upset loss at home to Catawba.• The last time Carson-Newman was ranked in the top 10 for a preseason poll was 2010. The Eagles were coming off a semifinal loss to Grand Valley State in 2009 and began the year ranked ninth. However, the Eagles dropped their opener to Winona State and fell to 16.

• Ken Sparks is a voting member of the AFCA poll. He ranked Carson-Newman 25th in the poll’s first iteration.

Hung Half-a-HundredCarson-Newman has allowed two teams, the University of the Cumber-lands (56) and Lenoir-Rhyne (52), to crack the half-century mark this season. Two teams haven’t scored 50 points on C-N in the same season since losing to Tennessee 73-0 and Kentucky 58-6 dur-ing the 1929 season.

Bears on TopCarson-Newman suffered its fourth-consecutive defeat at the hands of the Lenoir-Rhyne Bears in week five of 2015. This puts L-R in some exclusive company. The Bears surpassed Wingate (2010-12) and Elon (1980-82 & 1984-86) as the only teams to defeat a Ken Sparks-coached team on three consecu-tive occasions. Lenoir-Rhyne is the only team to ever defeat Carson-Newman four times in consecutive seasons., North Alabama won four in a row against the Eagles from games span-ning from 1998-2009 before the Eagles defeated the Lions in the 2009 quarter-final round off the playoffs 24-21.

Ranked RundownWhen Carson-Newman and Lenoir-Rhyne collided in week five, it marked the Eagles’ 60th meeting with a ranked opponent. Lenoir-Rhyne entered the contest #22 in the AFCA coaches poll. The Eagles are 33-27 since entering Di-vision II against ranked competition but just 4-10 since 2008. Last year when the Eagles played L--R, the Bears were ranked fourth in the country, which was Carson-Newman’s 21st meeting with a team in the top 5 - the Eagles are 7-14 in such games. The Eagles are 3-1 against teams ranked 22nd. Carson-Newman defeated #22 Newberry 52--31 in 2013 and #22 Catawba and then #22 Wingate in consecutive weeks in 2004 49-30 and 41-10, respectively.

Damian Baker the Touchdown MakerCarson-Newman running back Damian Baker (Columbus, Miss.) snagged the first South Atlantic Conference Player of the Week honor of his career, the league office announced Monday morn-ing. Baker cemented himself in the Carson-Newman record books with his performance Saturday in the Eagles’ 62-38 win over Mars Hill. Baker rushed for 249 yards and four scores, both career

highs for Baker. The 249 yards amount-ed to the seventh highest single game rushing tally in Carson-Newman football history and the four touchdown-day is the eighth time a C-N back has done that since 2004. It is the 35th 200-yard rushing performance by a C-N running back all-time. Baker reeled of rush-ing touchdowns of 64, 52, 42 and two yards. It’s the first four touchdown day for an Eagle since Andy Hibbett went for four scores against Wayne State last year, Baker ranks second in the nation in scoring and rushing touchdowns. He’s averaging 15 points per game and has 10 scores. He is sixth in the nation in rushing yards with 646.

Mars Hill at 100Mars Hill ran 100 plays against Carson-Newman in the Eagles 62-38 win over the Lions. The century mark of total offense attempts marks the most plays that has ever been run against Carson-Newman in school history. It marks just the third time that a team has run more than 90 plays on the Eagles. The Lions gained 536 yards of total offense, the sixth most yards the Eagles have ever allowed.

Go Long TraWhen De’Andre Thomas hooked up for a 75-yard completion to TraShaun Ward against Catawba, it marked the first time the Eagles had a pass go 75 yards since Justin Long snagged a 78-yarder against Concord in 2008. That’s a span of 84 games and 2,579 days.

Welp, we finally know the punter - and HE’S AWESOME

It took two weeks to witness Christian Ramirez’s debut as Carson-Newman’s new punter after the Eagles’ offense was so mind-bogglingly efficient against Cumberlands that it didn’t need to punt. It took just two punts against Shorter for Ramirez to etch his name in the C-N record books. Punting from his own 31, Ramirez had a 68-yarder downed at the one. It’s the third longest punt in Carson-Newman football history, trail-ing Kevin Lanahan’s 75-yard punt from 1979 against Newberry and current Dal-las Cowboy Chris Jones’ 73-yard punt against Winona State from 2010. In his seccond game, Ramirez punted seven times for 310 yards, both totals rank second in C-N’s all-time single game punt totals.

Eagles kept under 300Carson-Newman was held under 300 yards of total offense against Shorter for the first time since 2013 when the Eagles lost 38-3 to Lenoir-Rhyne in the regular season. Wins have been hard to come by for the Eagles when they fail to gain 300 yards. Carson-Newman had lost seven consecutive games when gaining fewer than 300 yards of total offense. The last time the Eagles won a game with less than 300 yards of total offense was Oct. 17, 2009 at Lenoir-Rhyne (also the last time C-N won in Hickory). The Eagles gained 272 yards that day and squeaked out a 17-13 win over the Bears.

Eagles and UCUM reset recordsThe combined 115 points (59-56 C-N) are the most ever scored in a Carson-Newman football game and the second most in South Atlantic Conference his-tory. The 56 points the Patriots scored are the second most ever given up by a Ken Sparks-coached team and it marks the most points Carson-Newman has ever allowed in a win. The Eagles’ 646 yards of total offense equates to the sixth highest single-game total for the program while C-N’s 291 yards through the air ranks for the fifth-most all-time for a Sparks-era team. Carson-Newman completed 14 passes as a team, which is tied for the third highest figure for a Sparks-era team. The Cumberlands’

average of 8.2 yards per rush comes up as the most the Eagles have given up per play all-time and the 334 yards of kickoff return yardage against are the second most allowed all-time by the Eagles.

Division II DominanceCarson-Newman won its 600th game in program history when it beat the University of the Cumberlands 59-56 on opening night. The Eagles (602) have the fourth most wins among DIvision II programs all-time, behind Pittsburg State (686), Tuskegee (662), and Hill-sdale (613). The Eagles are tied with Central Oklahoma (602).

Opening Night SuccessCarson-Newman is 29-6-1 in season-opening games under Carson-Newman head football coach Ken Sparks. Carson-Newman hasn’t scored any less than 44 points in an opening day win since 2003 (a 21-14 win over Winston-Salem State) save for last year’s 38-24 win over Edinboro. The only losses on opening day in the last decade game in back-to-back years in 2009 and 2010 to Winona State. Carson-Newman has scored more than 70 once, more than 50 four other times. The Eagles have only failed to score less than 40 three times since 1999 in wins.

Return Record SettersCarson-Newman’s kickoff return game was strong in 2015 to the tune of a couple record setting performances. TraShaun Ward has become the program’s all-time leader for kickoff return yards in a career with more than 1900 as he continues returning kicks in his senior season. Ward set the single season record with 720 return yards as a freshman. Last year he has split time returning kicks with converted quarterback Lonnie Williams. Williams has responded by bringing back a 100-yard kickoff (the fourth in C-N football history) against Brevard and a 95-yarder against Newberry. Williams becomes the fourth C-N return man with multiple kickoff returns in a single season. Wil-liams joins Willie Lundy (1987), Da-mon Wright (1990) and Kendal James (1993).

Thursday Night ExplosionsCarson-Newman opensed its season on a Thursday night for a fourth consecu-tive year. In 2012 and 2013, the year’s were kind to Carson-Newman. The Eagles lit up Glenville State for more than 500 yards of total offense in a 56-46 shootout victory to give Ken Sparks his 300th win. Then in 2013, the Eagles pushed past the 500-yard mark for total offense again by slugging Wayne State 55-28. In 2014 again, the Eagles surpassed 500 yards of total offense against Edinboro with 515 yards; how-ever, the Fightin Scots held the Eagles under 50 points with a 38-24 C-N win. Carson-Newman has averaged 49.3 points and 551 yards of total offense in their last three Thursday night home openers. The offensive trend continued with 59 points and 646 yards of total offense

C-N’s Not in Pole PositionFor just the fourth time in 28 years, Carson-Newman’s football team hasn’t been picked to win the South Atlantic Conference. Four-time defending SAC champion Lenoir-Rhyne was picked by the league’s coaches to win the league for a fifth straight year with six first place votes and 55 points overall. The Eagles finished four points behind the Bears with two first place votes and 51 points. This season joins three other occasions where the Eagles weren’t picked first were 1986, 2011 and 2012. C-N won the conference title in 1986, one of 14 in the years since. However, the Eagles haven’t won a SAC title since 2009, the longest conference title drought in the Ken Sparks era.

NO SHUTOUTS

Behind maestro Mike Turner’s split-back veer offense, the Eagles have put up points over the years, so much so that the Eagles have gone 266 games without being shutout. A streak 20 years in the making, Carson-Newman’s offense hasn’t been shutout since a 14-0 defeat to New Haven in 1992. The New Haven game is one of only two contests where a Ken Sparks coached team has been held without a point. The other was a 2-0 loss to Catawba in 1987. After that, you have to go back 169 more games from there to get to a 26-0 loss to Mars Hill in 1978 to find the next shut out. Carson-Newman’s string of games without being shutout is the third-longest streak in the country.

OPP GAME-BY-GAME DRIVES

• An eight-person officiating system will be allowed if a conference or school chooses. A center judge was used experimentally in several conferences during the past two seasons. The benefits of having the extra official include getting the ball spotted more efficiently and detecting holding and hands-to-the-face penalties.• A 15-yard unsportsmanlike foul will be called on players who push or pull opponents off piles -- for example, after fumbles.• If a helmet comes off a defensive player in the final minute of a half, 10 seconds will be run off the game clock, and the play clock will be set at 40 seconds. Previously, the play clock was set to 25 seconds.• Officials will return to giving teams an initial sideline warning when their personnel move out of the designated team bench area.• Officials will treat illegal equipment issues -- such as jerseys tucked under the shoulder pads or exposed back pads -- by making the player leave the field for at least one play. The equipment must be corrected for the player to return to the game. The player may remain in the game if his team takes a timeout to correct the equipment is-sue.• Instant replay reviews will be allowed to see if a kicking team player blocked the receiving team before the ball traveled 10 yards on onside-kick plays.• Teams must be provided at least 22 minutes prior to kickoff for pregame warm-ups. Teams may mutually agree to shorten this time period.• If the play clock runs to 25 seconds before the ball is ready for play, officials will reset the clock to 40 seconds. Previously, the play clock was reset when it reached 20 seconds.• Based on research findings of the National Football League, non-standard/overbuilt facemasks will be prohibited.

As Ken Sparks embarks on his 36th season he does so continuing a battle with a cancer that was diagnosed on June 30, 2012.

Christian principles have been the driving force behind Sparks’ coaching career. It was his faith that brought him to Carson-Newman in 1980 and it is his faith that will see him through this latest challenge.

He is the winningest active head coach in the coun-try with 328 wins, 91 losses and two ties. Sparks passed legendary Alabama head coach Bear Bry-ant with a win on homecoming in 2014 over North Greenville. Going into 2015, Sparks is seven wins behind former Mount Union head coach Larry Kerhes for fifth on the all-time wins list.

In 2012 Sparks made history, becoming only the 12th man in college football to record 300 wins. The coach is reluctant to shine the spotlight on himself and his accomplishments. Sparks would instead rather be measured by his impact in the lives of the young men and coaches who’ve been a part of his Carson-Newman family.

For Coach Sparks, football is a laboratory of learn-ing where he and his staff strive to develop the whole person – educationally, socially, athletically and spiritually. Along the way, Sparks has devel-oped one of the winningest football programs in the history of the sport. The Eagles have won five NAIA National Titles and played for it six times. A move to NCAA Division II didn’t slow Sparks’ Carson-Newman squad down. The Eagles played for the D-II National Title three times and were a semifinalist in 2009.

The rest of the numbers speak for themselves as Sparks has recorded 21 South Atlantic Conference Championships, 24 NCAA or NAIA playoff appear-ances and a 326-89-2 record. Sparks holds the all-time record for wins in NCAA Division II and, with the recent retirement of St. John’s (Minn.) John Ga-gliardi and Mount Union’s Larry Kehres, Sparks

is the activce leader in coaching wins. In fact, at the start of the 2015 season, he was the only ac-tive head coach with more than 273 wins (Virginia Tech’s Frank Beamer).

Sparks was inducted into the inaugural NCAA Divi-sion II Hall of Fame Coaches Class in 2010 along with Northwest Missouri State’s Mel Tjeerdsma and West Alabama’s Bobby Wallace. Coach Sparks is also a member of the South Atlantic Conference Hall of Fame, the Knoxville Sports Hall of Fame, the Carson-Newman Athletic Hall of Fame, the Tennes-see Sports Hall of Fame and the NAIA Hall of Fame.

Sparks has been honored with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes Lifetime Achievement Award and National Coach of the Year. Sparks was elected president of the American Football Coaches Associa-tion in 2007. In 2002 Sparks received the All-Amer-ican Football Foundation’s Johnny Vaught Lifetime Achievement Award.

Coach Sparks earned NAIA Coach of the Year honors in 1984. He’s been voted SAC Coach of the Year 12 times. Sparks is a two-time winner of the Tennessee Sportswriters Coach of the Year in 1999 and 2002

and was also named Division II Coach of the Year by American Football Coach Magazine.

In 2010, Sparks received the pres-tigious General Robert R. Neyland Trophy, presented by the Knoxville Quarterback Club for contributing greatly to intercollegiate athletics.

In 2013 he was named Jefferson Countian of the Year by the Jeffeer-son County Chamber of Commerce

for outstanding committment to the area. Following that he was presented the Uncommon Award by for-mer NFL coach Tony Dungy for “uncommon leader-ship through character and faith.” Sparks has called the Uncommon Award one of the most meaningful of his career along with the

lifetime achievement award from the FCA because of what they stand for.

The Eagles’ postseason run under Sparks began in 1982, when he guided the Eagles to a 10-2 re-cord and an NAIA playoff berth in his third season. Carson-Newman lost in the opening round of the playoffs that season, but the culture of the Eagles program was forever changed. The next season, C-N won its second-straight SAC-8 title, then captured its first national football title in school history, beating heavily-favored Mesa State 36-28 in the NAIA Cham-pion Bowl.

The Eagles brought home four more titles begin-ning with a 19-19 tie with Central Arkansas in 1984. Carson-Newman shutout Cameron 17-0 in the 1986 championship game, blew out Adams State 56-21 in 1988 for the title and cruised to a fifth in 1989 with a 34-20 win over Emporia State.

In 2009, After opening the season 0-2, the Eagles reeled off 11 consecutive victories, including a per-fect 7-0 mark in the SAC to claim their 21st confer-ence title. C-N fell a game short of making its 11th national title game appearance, falling to Grand Valley State in the Division II semifinals.

2012 went down similarly for Sparks’ Eagles. After stuttering to a 2-2 start, the Eagles reeled of seven

consecutive victories to earn a first round bye. C-N came out in round two and took the SAC champions, the Lenoir-Rhyne Bears, out of the playoffs with a 38-35 victory. Carson-Newman would fall just shy of the semis against eventual national champions Valdosta State.

A native of Knoxville, Tenn., Sparks began his coaching career at Gibbs High School in Knoxville, restarting the football program with a winning season. A year later Sparks coached quarterbacks and wide receivers at Tennessee Tech while earning his Master’s Degree. He coached Morristown East High School for one season before returning to his alma mater, Carson-Newman, to serve as offensive coordinator for then-Carson-Newman head coach Dal Shealy and oversee the track program. Sparks served both teams with distinction, receiving Southern Collegiate Track Coach of the Year honors in 1977. With Sparks running the offense, the 1972 Eagles advanced to their first-ever NAIA Cham-pion Bowl, falling to East Texas State.

Coach Sparks is a sought-after public speaker and motivator, delivering speeches a coaches clinics, church groups and civic organizations. He is a member of Manley Baptist Church of Morristown, along with his wife Carol, and is heavily involved in multiple Christian organizations.
