Why You Should See An AudiologistAn audiologist is a health care professional who holds a masters or doctoral degree in audiology. As the specialist in hearing care they can identify, treat and monitor hearing loss, and other related problems. They possess extensive knowledge of the human auditory system from ear to brain making them experts at navigating the complex relationship between hearing aid and patient.

When it comes to your hearing health, dont settle.Locally Owned and Operated Matters!

It is the best way to ensure innovation and low prices. Small businesses select products based on the needs of their local customers and NOT on a national sales plan. They are owned by people who live in this community, are less likely to leave, and are more invested in our future! We are a private practice that is not beholden to any one hearing aid company providing you with the best choices available from todays industry leaders.

    Benefi ts of Todays Technology

Health Risk Associated with Untreated Hearing Loss

Many hearing aids can be adjusted with a smart phone or remote control. They can be wirelessly connected to TVs & telephones. They can automatically eliminate feedback. They can offer the convenience of rechargeable batteries. They can have multiple microphones to help you hear in noisy environments!

Recent research from John Hopkins reveals that untreated hearing loss is linked with walking problems, falls, and even dementia. People with diabetes are more likely to

have hearing loss. Dont wait to get the help you need!

Which Hearing Aid is Right for You?Audiologists are the professionals with the education to steer you in the right direction. Sorting through all of todays alternatives in hearing aids can be a maze of confusion. All of our solutions are customized for you. We consider the type of loss, degree of your communication diffi culties, your lifestyle & your budget. We evaluate available technology, comfort & ease of use. We help you make the right decision for your needs.

    The MaryDenton Story

    by Beecher Hunter, president

There is one woman, in particular, whose story identifi es the culture of Life Care Centers of America. Even though she is no longer physically present, her spirit is still with us.

Her name is Mary Harris Denton. She is the lady in the wheelchair receiving a rose from a nurse depicted in the Life Care logo, which is an offi cially registered and protected trademark. Mrs. Denton was a resident at Life Care Center of East Ridge when the photograph that inspires Life Cares logo was taken.

The logo is createdThe original picture was used in a facility brochure, a newspaper advertisement and for several other purposes. After a while, Joe Pardue, associated with the development and production of Life Cares graphic services, suggested that the picture would make a nice logo showing a visual representation of the companys mission of caring to those with long-term care needs. Everybody agreed, and the photo was made into a silhouette and reduced, with the words Life Care Centers of America wrapped about it. It became the company logo.

But back to Mary Denton. I didnt know her when the photo was taken, because I didnt join Life Care until 1986. After I did, she became one of the fi rst people in the company I got to know. One day she said to me, Beecher, Im an old woman 94 years old, in a wheelchair, not much use to anybody. But every morning, when I wake up, I pray that today, somehow, Gods love can fl ow through me and touch the people about me.

Heres the amazing thing, how this woman, as old and as handicapped as she was, put her own prayer into action. She went to the administrator of Life Care Center of East Ridge, a lady named Joy Hambleton, and she said, Joy, its so diffi cult

for a person to move out of his or her home into a nursing center. Would you allow me to be the fi rst point of contact? Would you let me show them around the facility, and introduce them to the staff and the other residents? Joy, would you let me be the friend of everyone who comes to Life Care Center of East Ridge?

Of course, Joy was delighted to honor that request. So, from that day forward, every person who came to Life Care Center of East Ridge to live got to know Mary Denton fi rst, and she became their friend.

A new dress for MaryA couple of years later, in 1988, we were back down at Life Care Center of East Ridge making some more photographs, and Mary was one of the models that we were using. After we had fi nished taking the pictures, my assistant at the time, Cathy Ryan, said, You know, every time we take a picture of Mary, she is wearing the same, black lace dress. I dont believe she has a very nice dress except that one. What do you think about us buying a new dress for her to thank her for all that she does for us?

I said, Cathy, I think thats a great idea. So, Cathy went on a shopping trip and found a beautiful pink dress for her to wear. After she had bought the dress, and by the time we got back down to Life Care Center of East Ridge, four or fi ve weeks had passed. When we got there, we were very disturbed to learn from the administrator that Mary was quite ill. She was back in her room, on her bed and very, very weak. But she is still mentally alert, said the administrator. And she will know who you are, and you can carry on a conversation with her.

We went back to Marys room, went around by her bedside, and Cathy took the top off the box. She held that pink material up for Mary to see,

and said, Mary, we just want you to see a little present that we bought for you. Its our way of thanking you for all that you do for us. And Mary, we love you!

Even though it was obvious that Mary was in a lot of pain, she slowly raised her hand until she could touch Cathys hands holding the new dress and then, with her fi ngers, slowly she caressed that pink material, all the way from where Cathy was holding it to where it lay on the bed beside her.

A light had gone outWe didnt know it that day, but that dress would become her funeral dress, for Mary died the next day. But heres the phenomenon: As the news of her passing went through the nursing center, every resident who heard it wept, every staff member wept. And one of the nurses said, When Mary died it was like a light had gone out in our facility.

Now sometimes I hear people say to me, as they surely do to our nursing home administrators: Well, I dont know what I could do to make somebody elses life better, or I dont know what I could do for the elderly in particular. Every time I hear that, I think about Mary and what she said to me, Im just an old woman 94 years old not much use to anybody.

The people at Life Care Center of East Ridge, who were there when she was, however, will tell you differently, because they know what a tremendous impact Mary had on their lives.

    ADMINISTRATION TITLE DEPT.

Still a local, family-owned business in the heart of Sierra Vista as it was back in 1985, Pioneer has grown to 55 offices in more than 35 cities across Arizona by remaining focused on a Commitment to Service.

In Cochise County, Pioneer leaders and team members are involved with the Sierra Vista Chamber of Commerce, Southeast Arizona Association of REALTORS, Douglas Association of REALTORS, Land Title Association of Arizona, Sierra Vista Kiwanis, and Sierra Vista Executive Association, just to name a few.

Pioneer also has a statewide community relations program, Pioneer Title Agency in Action, which focuses on giving back both time and money to local causes across our state. Just some of the causes in Cochise County that Pioneer has been proud to support include:

x Art League of Willcoxx Benson High Schoolx Benson High School Project

    Graduationx Bisbee American Youth Football

Pioneer Title Agency has proudly served Southeastern Arizona since its inception in Cochise County in 1985. With eight offices throughout Benson, Bisbee, Douglas, Sierra Vista and Willcox, Pioneer Title Agency is able to focus on ensuring the rights of

ones property are clear, and the transfer of title is completed in a timely fashion, with the upmost professionalism.

And for our 30th anniversary, which we are celebrating throughout 2015, we have something really special planned, says Keith Newlon, founder and president of Pioneer. To celebrate this milestone, we have partnered with the Arizona Trail Association on Take a Hike, a first-ever fundraising and employee wellness challenge utilizing the Arizona National Scenic Trail.

Through the unique partnership, Pioneers team of more than 375 individuals have set a goal to raise at least $30,000 in 2015 to support the Arizona Trail. The

community minded team will also collectively hike, bike, run or ride all 800 miles of the Arizona Trail in 2015 along with their families, friends, customers and associates. In addition to the wellness benefits associated with time spent on the trail, the initiative hopes to encourage everyone to explore a segment of the Arizona Trail that

they likely havent seen. The planning process of a point-to-point hike, overnight camping trip, or longer distance effort on the Arizona Trail will encourage collaboration, critical thinking and camaraderie, too.

    DOUGLAS DISPATCH

There wasnt a dry eye around for the soldiers

from Douglas 2220 National Guard Transporta-

tion Company who received an emotional send-

off Saturday as they begin a year long deployment

that will eventually take them to Kuwait.

The 15 soldiers from Douglas gathered at the

National Guard Armory on Eighth Street and

from there said goodbye to their families, friends

and supporters before being escorted out of town

by the American Legion Harley riders and the

Douglas Police Dept. From here they joined the

rest of their squad in Tucson where they will train

for the four weeks before heading to Indiana for

additional training. The 2220 (which used to be

the 2222nd) is expected to be in Iraq by mid May.

SSG Eddie Gracia who is in charge of the Dou-

glas detachment, said while in Kuwait the 2220

will be shutting down the lights in Iraq perform-

    ing pretty much convoy operations.

Were a transportation company and thats

what we do we transport stuff, he said.

Unlike previous tours Gracia said this unit is not

taking any company equipment over and will in-

stead begin preparing to bring stuff back.

This is pretty awesome because this unit was

the first one to go and now it looks like were go-

ing to be the last transportation company out, he

said.Gracia is not actually going hi

    mself to Kuwait

but will stay with the 2220 until they finish their

training in Indiana. When they ship out I come b

    ack over here to

take care of anything else that needs to be taken

care of, he said. Some of Douglas soldiers are

    headed back for

their third tour while others are experiencing their

    first.

Regardless of how many tours these brave men

and women have served they all admit the good-

byes are the hardest part of their military duties.

This is a real emotional time for them and their

families, Gracia said. Were our own family

within the unit here but leaving their actual fami-

ly is the hardest thing.Gracia says this is even hard o

    n him knowing

what these soldiers are going through.

I want to go and be with them, he said. But

Ive been given orders to stay back. Some peo-

ple say thats a good thing but I dont feel that way.

I want to be with them.Gracia says he has spent a lot

    of time with the

soldiers of the 2220 and feels strongly they are

ready to do the job they are asked to do.Theyve been trained well, h

    e said. Theyll

be alright. The 2220 is expected to return

    home sometime

    next February or March.

EDUCATION: SECOND ANNOUNCEMENT IN TWO DAYS

Another departure in BisbeeLetter to the editor

The Herald/Review got this letter from former Bisbee school board President Ed Matchett:

To the Editor:I have sent a letter to

County School Superin-tendent Trudy Berry an-nouncing my resignation from the Bisbee School Board. At this time, I believe I can be more effective in my support for quality education in Bisbee by using my skills and experience outside of the board setting. In my nearly 12 years on the board I have seen tremendous progress achieved with our five board members working together with a common purpose of keeping the focus on what is best for our students. Our main objective has been to prepare kids for future success in college, in technical school, in the workforce and in life. My personal goal and the goal of many board members with whom I have served over the years has been to ensure that the Bisbee School District is one of the top performing districts in the State of Arizona. Achieving that objec-tive requires that the primary focus always remains on the kids we serve and their student achievement so that the educational experience provided is of the high-est quality. Success like this doesnt just happen it requires commit-ment, hard work and unity of purpose from all involved.

    BY ADAM CURTISHERALD/REVIEW

BISBEE Former Bisbee school board President Ed Matchett has announced his in-tention to retire from the board after 12 years of service. The move came after Superinten-dent Gail Covington made public on Satur-day her intent to retire.

I have sent a letter to County School Super-intendent Trudy Berry announcing my resig-nation from the Bisbee School Board, Matchett said in a letter to the edi-tor received by the Her-ald/Review on Saturday. At this time, I believe I can be more effective in my support for quality education in Bisbee by using my skills and ex-perience outside of the board setting.

Matchett said hed prefer not to speak fur-ther on the matter un-til after the letter had been published.

Covington said she is certainly sad to see Matchett stepping down from the board after many years of service to the school district.

I will miss our work together, she said. but I certainly understand why hes leaving, and I support him.

She could not speak to why Matchett intends to exit, but said, He ab-solutely has students in the forefront in every decision hes made.

She would not elabo-rate on her own reasons for seeking retirement but referred back to the

IN CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION, SCOUTS PACK THE PARKBY ADAM CURTISHERALD/REVIEW

SIERRA VISTA As part of the celebration of the 100th anniver-sary of Boy Scouting in America, local Scouts showed off a variety of hands-on projects and enjoyed some outdoor games during expo in Veterans Memorial Park on Saturday.

Scouts often do activi-ties in secluded areas, so the expo gave them a chance to share some of what they do, said James Harper, district program chairman for Boy Scouts. Saturdays activities included the assembly of two mon-key bridges, the assem-bly of a catapult, min-iature boat racing and the Pinewood Derby.

Five age groups of Cub Scouts competed in the Pinewood Der-by, and medals were awarded to the top three from each group.

Andrew Richardson won first place in the tiger category, which is for kids ages 6 to 7, and comes from a Scout-ing family, he said. His brothers helped him make his car but he is the first one to place first in the derby.

Though he was ex-cited to be the first one to win, he said he was not going to brag to his brothers about it.

FORT HUACHUCA Traffic patterns going on and off the post will change starting 3 p.m. today with the Main Gate being closed and the new East Gate being opened, a fort spokeswoman said.

The constraint of traffic com-ing on the post through the Main Gate is part of a major project involving all three gates on the fort, including the West

Now that work on the East Gate is completed, it will be the main entrance and exit from the installation through at least June, when construction of the new Main Gate is expected to be done, she said.

HEALTH: CONCERNS LINGER ABOUT CARONDELET DEAL

In response to a se-ries of Herald/Review questions put to Ma-rie Wurth, the SVHRC main spokeswoman on the issue, she said, The agreement has been signed and will be effective April 17, 2010.

Wurth also noted the trustees worked with several state and nation-al legal and strategic experts in developing the agreement with the Catholic health network, and the hospital paid for its counsel.
