During the early 1900s, Fokker became a force in aviation and was one

of the largest plane manufacturers. In the 1910s, Fokker worked with

Franz Schneider, who used to supply metal parts for various purposes,

developed a synchronization gear, fitted it on the Fokker Eindecker,

and made it a force to reckon with.

What was the purpose of the gear, loved by the German Air Force,

giving the company a superiority known as the Fokker Scourge, until

other makers caught up?

Over the years, there have been several instances of this practice. In

1986, the Haitian Gourde was stamped with a red circle and a slash

across it. In 1979, Iran saw something similar.

What is this practice called and why is it used?

A ‘tontine’ is named after a Neapolitan banker who is credited with

inventing it in 1653. By the mid-18th century, investors were

beginning to understand how game the system—for example, to buy

tontines for young children, especially for girls around the age of 5.

It has been written about in books. The Wrong Box by R.L. Stevenson

is an example. It makes an appearance in The Grand Budapest Hotel.

What is a tontine, and why did people buy one for girls?

Each subscriber pays an agreed sum into a fund, and thereafter

receives an annuity. As members die, their shares devolve to the

other participants, and so the value of each annuity increases. When

the penultimate member dies, the capital passes to the last survivor.

In those days girls lived longer than boys.

It started with Sir John Hicks in 1972. Christopher Pissarides was the

last one to get it, in 2010. In between we have had Friedrich von

Hayek in 1974, James Meade in 1977, Sir Arthur Lewis in 1979,

Merton Miller in 1990, Ronald Coase in 1991, Robert Mundell in 1999,

George Akerlof in 2001 and Leonid Hurwicz in 2007.

If the list is expanded, George Bernard Shaw will be part of it.

Francois married Barbe-Nicole Ponsardin in 1798 but died in 1805,

leaving her a single mother when she was only 27. Officially the cause

of his death was typhoid, but in his book on the family, Tilar J. Mazzeo

speculates that it could have been suicide because he failed at his

business.

Which Reims-based luxury brand, which she later pioneered, is at the

centre of the story of Mazzeo’s book, the cover of which is a distinct

shade of yellow? Why is the brand called so?

A slip stitch in tailoring this is a used to finish clothing in a professional

looking way. The thread ends up between the folds of the hem and is

invisible on both sides.

This is especially useful in one particular item, where it helps in two ways—

to give some elasticity when this item is used, and also help it retain its

shape when loosened. If this thread is removed the item is ruined.

Where will one find a slip stitch, an item preferred especially by bankers?

This is Bennett Cerf talking about an epiphany: The day we dreamed

up the name … Rockwell (Kent) dropped in. He was sitting at my desk

facing Donald (Klopfer, Cerf's partner), and I went to the bathroom,

which is where I get some of my finest ideas. And we were talking

then about doing a few books on the side. And while I was on the

throne I got this inspiration, and came out and said, “I’ve got the

name …”

What idea, for which Kent drew the picture that you see here? What

There wasn’t much that Walter Dorwin Teague did not do. He was a

designer, architect, writer and businessman all rolled into one.

What he is known best for was the work he did in the period in the

1920s and 30s as a designer. The models he designed came in six

bright, fun colours. They included variants such as The Boy Scout, Girl

Scout and Camp Fire Girls.

He was known to the community he served so well as “Dad”. When he died

in 2012, the timing was particularly poignant, as the company was due to

celebrate, the 50th anniversary of its first product.

He was also known as the “Father of Loud”. As Jeff Beck once said: “If you

want to get a little bit rude and loud, you've got to have a ________. The

________ sound is the balls. It's the big daddy—it has that growl.”

At the time when this company was started the trade was run by seedy, fly-

by-night manufacturers selling cheap wares. Many pharmacists were loath

to stock a product associated with sexual vice (in those days). They also

had the Comstock Law to deal with.

Things changed after some time, and in 1927 the company placed its first

ad in a newspaper. A latex-based product was introduced in 1930. The

brand’s logo is a not-so-subtle indicator of what it actually ‘protects’.

The first such machine appeared in the mid 19th century, when in 1859,

Nathan Ames from Michigan was granted a US patent for an installation

design that formed an equilateral triangle.

The earliest working type was patented in 1892 by Jesse W. Reno, and was

actually introduced in 1896 as a novelty ride at Coney Island, a theme park

in New York. During that decade, George H. Wheeler patented a design

which Charles D. Seeberger bought in 1898, and went to work at ________

developing the first modern prototype. He created the name from

combining a Latin word describing it, and a word, which was already in

general use in the US by this time, and registered it as a trademark.

The origin of this brand actually occurred in 1620, during the reign of King

Charles I, when a young man bearing the name paid the monarch a large

sum to gain the concession for providing all the soap for the City of

London. The particulars of this enterprise were lost in the Great Fire of

London in 1666. Only one detail remained; lavender was used to perfume

the soap. 150 years, in 1770, William _______ became the first person

with the surname to actually own the brand, after he bailed out his son-in-

law from a loan. Many years later, the Asian and Middle Eastern rights for

the brand were sold by Lornamead to an Indian company.

The brand name of this product from William Grant & Sons, goes back

to the whisky making heritage of this distillery. It’s a reference to a

condition that malt-men picked up while working long shifts and

turning the barley by hand. This made their arm drop a bit like this

animal’s. The distillery still employs manual turning of the barley, but

with a much more conducive working environment, so, while the

brand lives on, the injury is a thing of the past. This brand is not a

single malt, in fact, it goes beyond that!

Name the brand and what’s the specialty in how it is made?

This scientist’s work relating to reform of this particular system was very significant. He was the Chairman of the _________ Reform Committee appointed by the Government of India in 1952 under the aegis of the CSIR. The task before the Committee was to prepare an accurate version of something based on scientific study, which could be adopted uniformly throughout India. There were thirty different ones in use across India, and religion and local sentiments were involved. Nehru, in his preface to the Report of the Committee, wrote: “They represent past political divisions in the country…now that we have attained independence, it is obviously desirable that there should be a certain uniformity in the _____ for our civic, social and other purposes and this should be done on a scientific approach to this problem.”

The Committee made three or four key recommendations that were then adopted.

Each toy starts out as a flat sheet of metal that is printed and then cut into

separate pieces. Each piece is then formed into it’s final shape through

numerous tooling stations. The pieces are then hand assembled to create

the final toy. A labour-intensive process, such production was quickly

abandoned when plastic moulding was developed.

Welby India, a Delhi-based company has been making these toys since

2000, when the last such Indian manufacturers shut down, and export

them, apart from selling through their website in India.

A typical rags-to-riches story, this Tirunelveli born entrepreneur, came

to Chennai with Rs 25 in his hand, and did several odd jobs before he

set up a betel-nut/newspaper shop with his brother. In 1935, the first

foray into organized business happened, when he set up a shop selling

clocks and watches, which later extended to bicycles. In the 1950s,

they pioneered the Hire Purchase concept of “Buy now, pay later”, and

also became leading sellers of Murphy radios in India. Known as much

for a tourist spot they set up in 1975, as their outlets, identify this

chain that has today diversified into housing and real estate as well,

and the founder. © KQA 2015

These actors are called The ____ Guys , since they personify a

and hat shaped like a core; the two grape guys (green and purple)

wear costumes that resemble a stripper covered with balloons at a

burlesque house, and closing out the fruity quartet is a guy dressed in

a fig leaf costume. The roster of actors to play these characters (who

first appeared in 1975) include F. Murray Abraham, Joey Faye and

Harry Goz.
