Black Belt… for most people it carries with it a strong meaning. Even those who have never done martial arts have some kind of impression of what it means to be a black belt. Wisdom, super human strength, ability to fight off the savaging hordes. The reality might be a little different, well, actually very different. However, black belt is definitely a symbol of hard work, commitment and a kick-butt kind of attitude.

To kick off the month of August, we held our annual Committed To Black Belt Seminar at the dojo. Over the past few years a number of people have made the commitment to do whatever it takes to get to black belt. A few of those people such as Luc & Bailey (pictured above) have taken it one step further, keeping themselves accountable to all dojo members by putting their goal up on display for all to see in the form of a black belt.

Saturday's seminar was a once a year opportunity for them to dust off their future black belt and try it on for size. For others, it was a chance to find out first hand what it takes to become a black belt and make the commitment themselves to follow the path of those who are already there.

Term 3 Bo Workshops & Seminars are now underway.

Committed To Excellence

Nothing says commitment, like being able to say that you’ve done something for half of your life, or decade. In the dojo, not everyone lasts for a long time, but some do. So we always take great pleasure in acknowledging the training milestones. And we have a few in August.

1 Year in August - Caelan Dean-Meredith, Jesse Goulter, Jessica Manning2Years in August - Paul Murray, Page Sweeney, Jakob Nicholls, Isabella Kearney3 Years in August - Chloe Crocker4 Years in August - Cath Amos5 Years in August - Anthony Williams

Japanese Language

This month, we’re going to take a closer look at the Chito-Ryu Dojo Go-Kun (The 5 Chito-Ryu Dojo Teachings). We say these as we enter the dojo as a reminder that karate is a “Way of Life” not just a sport.

1. Reigi wo omonzu beshi We must honour and respect manners2. Taido wo tadasu beshi We must have correct behaviour3. Kotoba wo tsutsushimu beshi We must have respectful speech4. Igi wo sakan ni subeshi We must have a thriving spirit5. Seiketsu wo mune to subeshi We must make efforts of cleanliness
