President’s Note

I am both honoured and humbled to lead you—incredibly talented and dedicated members—as we work

together to keep our club alive and contribute to its growth. My first year as your President is under my

belt—a year of many rewarding moments as well as some challenges.

Membership fees remained at $10 per member and free for those who celebrating their ninetieth birthday

or higher in 2015; new members joining between 1 October and 31 December paid $5. The cost for each

member and visitor not involved with preparing the monthly sandwich lunch continued to be $3 and

stayed at $5 for the executive lunch.

Together, we made solid progress to recognize monetary donations made to the Top Generation Club in

memory of a deceased member, but were unsuccessful revising our constitution with the details of each

executive team member’s role and responsibility. The Constitution Review Committee will revisit this again

in 2016.

On 5 May, I attended a luncheon presentation on Transportation Choices for Seniors in Rural Ottawa

hosted by the Eastern Ottawa Resource Centre.

Marilyn James and I represented our club at the OSGA 55+ (Ontario Senior

Games Association) District 6 Summer Games on 20 May. While neither of

us won the right to advance as representatives of our district for the 3

km prediction walk, but we had a great walk that gave us time to multitask—

walk and chat!

In July, my husband, Marcel, and I attacked the overgrown raspberry patch at

the west side of the parking lot. Arrangements with Harvest House ensure

the patch is mowed every week so that it does not grow back and haunt us!

As we start our new year with greater clarity, I want to thank each one of you for your support and

dedication and for the extra hours that you worked to successfully achieving our goals.

Together, Each Achieves More!

Joan

Vice President

Special Thanks to Charles Argue for taking on the position of Vice President. Charles has attended all the

Executive Meetings and even been part of the Constitutional Review Committee, despite being knee deep

in sheep farming. When called upon, Charles addressed the assembled membership and directed them in

the day’s activities. He and another member, Dennis Petersen, also created two sandwich boards for the

Gloucester Horticultural Society so that they can protect their shrubs in the front garden from snow-loads.

Kitchen Chairperson Report

Hard at work behind the scenes is our Kitchen Coordinator, Fay Petersen. Fay organizes everything

associated with the kitchen. She washed all the salt & pepper shakers, filled them with fresh contents,

and provided a new tin to hold them in. Fay is forever watchful for the telltale signs of mice. Scrubbing out

the cupboards and setting traps in the event they dare enter her domain. Fay also has the responsibility of

maintaining the kitchen inventory.

Fay’s husband, Dennis was enlisted in creating a coffee tray dispenser. Dennis also made

a stand with a cutter for the oversized saran wrap.

At the beginning of the calendar year, Fay Petersen complies the list of sandwich and

dessert makers and milk supplier for each month. The list is posted on the bulletin board

and includes your responsibilities during the month.

These include:

→ making numerous thermos of tea to keep up with the consumption;

→ making a large pot of coffee;

→ setting out cups, stir sticks, sugar, and milk at each serving station;

→ preparing the buffet tables with food, cutlery, plates, serviettes, and condiments; and

→ taking home the dish clothes and drying towels to launder.

Thank you Fay and your co-chair Helen Jones for all your tremendous work in 2015.

Use of Hall Chairperson’s Report

Barbara Alexander has whole-heartedly taken on the responsibility for maintaining and renting of the hall. Furniture

has been rearranged to allow more space. The number of tables set out has gone from 9 to 12, easily

accommodating 48 people, and even more with seating adjustment. Barbara personally checks on the hall to insure

it is up to high standards of cleanliness and preparedness for bookings. Barbara’s vigilance has secured the Club

with $3,125.00 in rental income for the year 2015. And she has bookings already into 2017.

Secretary’s Report by Laurie Barnes

Two years ago, I walked in to the little school house on Generation Court and was immediately

welcomed and adopted in to the Club. I found myself among an instant group of kindred spirits, not

a mean soul in the bunch. Emma Smith had asked what I thought of the Club. My response was

“I’ll never be lonely!”

I had to reverse engineer my generational link in the Club. I invited my great aunt, Aggie; who in

turn invited her sister in law, Val Leach; who is related to Bev Whyte.

At last year’s Annual General Meeting, I switched roles. I went from “Hall Renter” to “Secretary”.

Joan Goyette was formerly the “Secretary”. Under Joan’s tutelage, most of my role has been filling

in the blanks like on a form. But still, I make her suffer mercilessly by my procrastination. Joan has

been a very patient President.

I am deeply impressed by those who volunteer their time and energy to insuring successful events,

such as the surprise 90th birthday party, Bev’s Presidency Celebration, Entertainment, Guest

Speakers, Day Trips, and the Christmas Luncheon.

This year has not been without its challenges. There have been 4 members who died in 2015:

Madeleine Adams, Mary James, John Whyte and Mickey Goodman. The stories I heard about their

sheer generosity, spiritual fortitude, devotion to family, friends and neighbors makes me want to be

a better person. Even in death, they continued to give, with donations made in memory of them.

The Club and its members are stronger because of them.

Mickey Goodman

Feb.28, 1928–Oct.2,2015

John Whyte June 18, 1936–Sept. 26, 2015

The President and the Treasurer have created an open and transparent system of recording the

donations and expenditures. The membership are regularly updated on the status of the funds.

Thus far, from the donations, the Club has been able to purchase a new sound system with

speakers, headset and hand held microphones; and modern kitchen taps; and there are plans to

purchase new barbeques. The Tally Sheet detailing the receipts and expenses is attached for

reference at the end of this report.

Supportive Partners

I would be remiss if I did not give credit to our supportive partners. The Carlsbad Springs

Community Association provides us with funding so that the Club’s members can partake in a yearly

special event. In addition, they provide us with access to the Community Centre for our Christmas

Party at no cost. Then there is Harvest House Ministries, who help by clearing the pathways and

checking on the proper functioning of the furnace in the winter, and cutting the grass in the

summer. In turn, we encourage their successes and rejoice in their accomplishments, plus feed

them dessert. The Gloucester Horticultural Society rents the hall for their monthly meetings and

several workshops, has a dedicated corner to keep their reference material, and maintain the curb

appeal of the property with flower beds filled with a mix of shrubs, perennials and annuals. Last but

not least is our relationship with the City of Ottawa, who we rely on for the on-going use of these

premises. Suzanne Sandford keeps us apprised of NCC lease agreements and helps us to fill out

the necessary submissions. Ted Keyes, the supervisor for Buildings and Grounds, has always been

most accommodating to any of our requests, from replacing toilet seats to searching for bats in the

attic.
