2015 ANNUAL REPORT 2015 IN REVIEW KEN DAVIDSON Board President OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR In 2015, Attain Housing served more than 2,250 adults and children though our Housing programs, weekly Community Suppers, and holiday programs. All of our work is made possible through more than 250 volunteers, as well as passionate staff members, committed Board of Directors, and You, our supporters. Transitional Housing Services: Attain Housing provided housing for 160 adults and children in 52 families. Through comprehensive case management services families learn about resources available to them, how to access additional support, and how to advocate for themselves. Welcome Home: The Welcome Home program helps reduce homelessness with financial assistance to those facing eviction or move-in costs. Preventing homelessness reduces the stress and anxiety of displacement and prevents families from entering the social service system. The program served 10 adults and 22 children in 2015 and after last check, those families are still housed. It is a priority for our organization to help more families and this program gives another way to prevent additional families from experiencing homelessness. Community Supper & Holiday Program: Attain volunteers serve a free Community Supper every Tuesday night for anyone in need at Holy Spirit Lutheran Church. In the last year, volunteers served 2,246 meals to individuals and families with children. In addition, 83 families in the community received Thanksgiving gift baskets, and 86 families received holiday gifts and food baskets in December. In 2015 there was a disturbing increase in homelessness throughout King County. A One Night Count is held in King County every January in which volunteers are systematically sent to all parts of the county to count persons who are sleeping outside. This count does not include homeless people in shelters or organized tent cities. In January 2016, they counted 4,505 individuals sleeping out in cars, sleeping bags and makeshift shelters. That total was 19% greater than the number of homeless counted in 2015 and the 2015 count was 14% higher than 2014. This dramatic increase in the number of people sleeping outside in January occurred at a time when the number of beds in shelters and tent cities has also increased. The Eastside is not immune to the increased incident of homelessness. In 2015 the four major school districts on the Eastside reported 828 homeless students—220 in Bellevue, 296 in Lake Washington, 203 in Northshore and 109 in Issaquah. For Bellevue and Lake Washington School Districts, the number of homeless students increased 41% in 2015, which followed a 22% increase in homeless students in 2014. It used to be that one saw signs of homelessness only in certain parts of downtown Seattle. Now it is no longer so limited. In rest stops along our highways I see folks living in their cars. We have found individuals bedded down in the landscaping around our office building in downtown Kirkland. The Methodist Church on Rose Hill opened its parking lot and facilities as a safe place for people to sleep in their cars and some nights they have had as many as 35 cars in their lot. Attain Housing is seeking to address this crisis by adding more units to its housing inventory and by innovating its programs. Its Housing Committee has been actively looking for apartment buildings and land for development, but the market is tight. They welcome any leads from supporters. The Board budgeted new money for two innovative programs aimed at avoiding homelessness for families who have had a hardship and at helping homeless families move into housing owned by private landlords. Many families are one paycheck away from homelessness and when they miss a paycheck due to a sickness, injury or layoff, they face eviction. In a new pilot project, Attain Housing is taking referrals from churches, social service agencies and lawyers of families facing eviction because of a hardship and helping them with funds to reach a settlement with their landlord and avoid becoming homeless. Attain Housing’s Welcome Home Program is designed to place homeless families in housing with private landlords by providing funds for deposits and short-term rent subsidy where needed. Attain Housing has been blessed with wide support from the Eastside community. 2015 ANNUAL REPORT

2015 IN REVIEW

KEN DAVIDSONBoard President

OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTORIn 2015, Attain Housing served more than 2,250 adults and children though our Housing programs, weekly Community Suppers, and holiday programs. All of our work is made possible through more than 250 volunteers, as well as passionate staff members, committed Board of Directors, and You, our supporters.

• Transitional Housing Services: Attain Housing provided housing for 160 adults and children in 52 families. Through comprehensive case management services families learn about resources available to them, how to access additional support, and how to advocate for themselves.

• Welcome Home: The Welcome Home program helps reduce homelessness with financial assistance to those facing eviction or move-in costs.

• Community Supper & Holiday Program: Attain volunteers serve a free Community

Supper every Tuesday night for anyone in need at Holy Spirit Lutheran Church.

Its Housing Committee has been actively

looking for apartment buildings and land for development, but the market is tight.

In the midst of this crisis in homelessness, we need now more than ever resourceful volunteers, Board members and staff, and generous donations from individuals, businesses, community groups and foundations.

2015 DONATIONS Continued...

Since 1989, Attain Housing has provided transitional and permanent housing, case management and other supportive services for homeless and at-risk individuals and families in East King County.

Attain Housing unites with individuals and families to provide safe, stable, low cost housing for families facing homelessness. Families are housed in 32 apartments owned by Attain Housing and 1 leased condo. At the heart of the program is Case Management, a systematic strength-based approach to helping families set, track and achieve goals towards gaining self-sufficiency.

Attain Housing creates a community network that ensures every family has adequate food, transportation, help with utilities, relevant health and community service referrals, education, life skills training and ongoing support. We’re transforming lives. Strengthening communities.

OUR YEAR IN WORDS

We were fortunate to meet Layla* who was part of Attain Housing back in the early 1990’s when the program was known as KITH. Layla and her mother found themselves homeless after an eviction. With very little hope, they contacted a local church who referred them to KITH where they found everything they needed to regain control of their lives: a roof over their head at Salisbury, counseling, support – and most importantly – compassion. Layla speaks quietly and confidently about her life. Though she has regrets, she is not ashamed and understands that it is what makes her who she is today.

“The moment we received our keys was the beginning of our healing. We were given an amazing opportunity to receive help

in rebuilding our lives.” Layla continues on to say that “KITH provided us with more than shelter, but also programs to help my mother rebuild her life and become self-sufficient, such as case management, money management and an introduction to the services that were available in our community.”

Layla is a college graduate and is an Operations Manager at a local Eastside company. “This program has truly saved my life.”

It takes effort, dedication and commitment to move from homelessness to stability. In 2015 we were honored to have partnered with 50 families as they successfully navigated this transition to independence.

Supper Serves Over 2,200 Meals

Van has been volunteering with Holy Family Parish at the Community Supper for many years. “I really don’t know how many years the Holy Family Group has been serving and loving our neighbors. It started with two seniors (who have gone to be with Jesus), and two new young couples who just joined the church (my husband & I). It has been over 20 years since we started doing this.”

Holy Family Parish, we thank you for everything that you have done to support our neighbors in need!

There were fifty-two Tuesdays in 2015 and on every single one of them our volunteers prepared and served a meal to hungry people in our community. Community Supper is an important way for Attain Housing to partner with the community to support our neighbors. Hosted by Holy Spirit Lutheran Church in Kirkland, the supper is ably coordinated by Mark Tillman. We are so grateful to everyone on the team for providing over 2,200 meals this year.

MISSIONBringing our community together to partner with homeless families by providing affordable housing, empowering them with practical case management and hope.

VISION A safe and supportive community, where opportunity exists for all families to achieve stable housing and self‑sufficiency.
