[Rev. Paul J. Fitzgerald, S.J., President, University of San Francisco] 09:30 – 10:30 Presentation: Integrated Strategic Planning for Student Learning

[William d. Murry, Ph.D., Director of Institutional Surveys, University of San Francisco] “This session is designed to kick off our realignment to include Planning (strategic), Institutional Research, and Assessment. We will discuss the impetus for the change from a pure IR perspective to a more integrated ap-proach which has become a critical part of providing high quality and timely information for institutional deci-sion making. For many schools this has become a major paradigm shift in approaching authentic strategic plan-ning within their schools. An integrative model will be presented that illustrates the above integration and then the session will be opened for questions.”

[Patrick Nolan, Executive Assistant to the President, AJCU] “This presentation will cover the history of the AJCU Fact Files and the reasons behind the decision to change their composition. Additional topics covered will include both a general description of AJCU’s current opera-tions as well as a discussion of future opportunities for inter-institutional collaboration. There will also be a demonstration of Longview’s business intelligence software in use by the AJCU Financial Officers’ Confer-ence, followed by a Q&A.”

He will then go on to describe three new tools to address the trends – Futuring, Optimizing Student Success with Analytics, and Expedition Mapping. Following lunch, we will explore the final tool, “Expedition Mapping as a Strategic Planning Tool”, in an interactive session establishing current problems, building our own maps, and learning from each other. The session will close with Q&A.”

The presenters will discuss their most recent regional accreditation experience; share some of the successes and challenges of that experience with respect to the practices of planning, institutional research, and institutional assessment; and describe particular activities currently underway at their home institutions to align these areas to meet the needs of their institutions, and expectations of their regional accreditation agencies. Perspectives will be shared in the context of three accredi-tation regions: the Middle States (MSCHE), the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU), and The Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACSCOC).”

10:30 – 10:45 BREAK 10:45 - 12:00 Presentation: Taking Action on Assessment Results: The Case of Student Engagement

[Jillian Kinzie, Associate Director, Center for Postsecondary Research & National Survey of Student Engage-ment, NSSE] “The National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) provides participating institutions diagnostic infor-mation about the quality of students’ experiences in practices that matter for learning. However, the ultimate goal of NSSE is not to gather data. It is to catalyze improvement in undergraduate education. What fosters the shift from collecting data to action? What approaches are associated with institutions that use evidence to im-prove? This session provides an opportunity to consider NSSE results, and learn about approaches taken by institutions that have made effective use of results, and to discuss strategies for taking action on results.”

Ex-amples will be shared of how data were used in the development of the plan; how we aligned unit level plan-ning with the university level plan; how we have coordinated activities across units; how we assess achieve-ment of strategic goals; and how we ensure that allocation of limited resources is aligned with the university’s highest strategic priorities.”

Take Special Note: Conference Dress— comfortable and casual-business casual. Restaurants do not require jackets. Weather—Check weather channel before coming. Typically for this time of year it will be sunny and

warm (65-70 degrees) and cool in the evenings. If the fog rolls in early and the wind kicks up you will need a sweater or hoodie. Dress in layers, don’t leave home without a jacket or sweat shirt is the general rule of thumb. You can always take it off but you can’t put it on if you don’t have it with you! If you go over to the GG Bridge without something warm you are guaranteed to return as an icicle.
