and creatively shaped greens, all designed by late golf course architect John Exley. Erie Golf Club, designed by A.W. Tillinghast is a tough yet rewarding course with rolling fairways, hilly terrain, challenging greens and 30+ bunkers. Peek N Peaks upper course features a unique terrain and natural qualities with panoramic rolling hills, great elevation changes, deep sand bunkers and mature woods. Their lower course bent-grass fairways are lined by mature hardwoods, strategic bunkers and ponds. Crab Apple Ridge Golf Course is one of the best golf courses in the tri-state area with 125+ acres of gently rolling terrain sprinkled with apple trees, generous fairways, large greens, and multiple tee boxes to accommodate golfers of all skill levels.

Fish from shore or stream, bring your boat or hire a charter (we suggest Tiny Tims Charters or Bassin on the Bay). Marinas, boat launches and bait and tackle concessions dot Eries Bayfront. Northwest Pennsylvania is one of the countrys greatest angling destinations and Lake Erie, Presque Isle Bay and the surrounding creeks, streams, tributaries and ponds are the places to land your big catch! Cast your line for diverse game fish species including steelhead, trout, muskies, walleye, pan fish, pike, bluegill, smallmouth and largemouth bass, salmon, catfish, perch and crappies.

Fish Tips: Fishing enthusiasts are presented with a variety of options in the spring. Steelhead is plentiful from late September to early May in Lake Erie tributaries and creeks. In April, pan fish and bass are found in smaller ponds, while pike and muskies are seen in Presque Isle Bay depending on the ice melt. April also brings the arrival of trout season plus the appearance of bass and walleye in Lake Erie. All of the above mentioned fish species are available in May with the exception of Steelhead. Smallmouth bass travel to Presque Isle Bay in May to spawn and June is heavy with trout, bluegill and inland pike.

  • The history amassed in Pennsylvania is far-reaching. From the battlefields of wars to the innovative thinkers and their inventions that shaped us, Erie, Pennsylvanias fourth largest city, played an important role in our nations history. Here you can re-live the Battle of Lake Erie, the French & Indian War and the Underground Railroad.

Erie County was formed in the 1800s after Pennsylvania purchased theErie Trianglefrom the U.S. Government in 1792 for approximately $151,000. Taken from part of Allegheny County, the new county was then named for Lake Erie and the Eriez Native American Indian tribe, which was destroyed by a combination of pestilence and the Seneca nation under Chief Cornplanter in the mid-seventeenth century. The first European settlers in the area were the French, who built Fort Presque Isle on the citys site in 1753. The French abandoned the fort to the English, who lost it in 1763 at the start of Pontiacs Rebellion. When General Mad Anthony Wayne induced the native tribes to make peace in 1794, the area was opened to settlement. The city was laid out in 1795 and became a port in 1801. In 1813, in what is often referred to as Eries proudest historical moment, Commodore Oliver Perry defeated the British in the Battle of Lake Erie. Most of Commodore Perrys ships were built in Erie.

    BACK TO OUR ROOTS

Learn about Eries rich waterfront heritage at the Erie Maritime Museum through historical artifacts, exhibits and interactive hands-on

displays illustrating the War of 1812 and Commodore Oliver Hazard Perrys victory over the British

during the Battle of Lake Erie. The museum is also the home port of the U. S.

Brig Niagara, the Official Flagship of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. When in port, the Niagara is an educational resource for many and conducts interpretive tours. Eries wealth of history doesnt stop there. Downtown Erie includes several historic sites including the 1839 Greek Revival bank building of the Erie Art Museum, the mid-19th century Erie County History Center and the newly renovated Hagen History Center (formerly known as

the Watson-Curtze Mansion) located on historic West Sixth Street Millionaires Row. If time permits, an interesting side trip in Erie County could include a trip to one of Erie Countys mid-1800s vintage covered bridges: Harrington and Brothertons Crossing or a stop in Waterford PA to see the only statue of George Washington in a British uniform. The statue commemorates Major George Washingtons mission to Fort LeBoeuf to request the French to recognize Britains claim to the area. Frances refusal led to the French & Indian War. The Fort LeBoeuf Historical Society/Judson House includes a model of the original fort, numerous exhibits on American Indians and the French and British fur trade.

  • WINESPennsylvanias moderate climate and rolling terrain provides some of the best grape growing conditions on the East Coast. With approximately 14,000 acres of grapes, Pennsylvania ranks 4th nationally in the amount of grapes grown and 8th in wine production. Take the scenic route outside Erie and head east on the Great Lakes Seaway Trail an Americas Byway to experience the 25 distinct wineries of Lake Erie Wine Country that span PA and NY along the southern shores of Lake Erie. The warm waters of Lake Erie are ideal for grape growing and the proof is in the award-winning wines ranging from Vidal Blanc, Riesling, Country Reds and Whites to Dutch Apple, Blueberry and Ice Wines. Stops at Arrowhead Wine Cellars, Courtyard Winery, Lakeview Wine Cellars, Mazza Vineyards, Penn Shore Vineyards, Presque Isle Wine Cellars, and South Shore Wine Company are highly recommended. Five & 20 Spirits & Brewing in neighboring Westfield, NY offers premium wines in addition to their high-quality small-batch craft distilled beverages. Finish up at The Grape

Discovery Center to learn about the oldest and largest Concord grape-growing region in the world. The grape harvest season culminates in late September with the

annual Wine Fest. Tours and tastings are offered year-round.

BREWS Where there is water, hops and

barley, there are brewers. The Erie region is home to

four breweries: Erie Ale Works, Erie Brewing Company, The Brewerie at Union Station and
